Final race of 2026.

]]>
October 4th was the final race in the Corvallis Trail Series, the Condor 25k. It is another Mac-Dunn race, so a lot of the same trails in a different direction. Don’t let that phrase make this sound like I didnt enjoy it. This version of the course is FUN. It takes advantage of some of the best downhill bombs in Mac and doesnt make the climbs too terrible. Overall I think this was my favorite Mac race of 2026. Great job.

What made this event interesting is I started about 15 minutes late. I really enjoyed this. I loved catching up with everyone and meeting them along the way. It created a very fun mental state for me. I might keep doing this.

My official time is 2:51:33 which put me at 58 of 124. If we take 15 minutes of that, 2:36:33 or so, I would have been around 38th or 39th place. Fun!

I did pretty terrible in the corvallis trail series because I didn’t do the Mac 50 or Marys. The way the stats are done heavily favors larger events, with many people only doing Mac or Marys and placing in the top 1/4th of the standings, which I think is pretty lame. The way it’s done is based on your top 3 finishes. So, again, many folks in the top of the standings dont even HAVE 3 finishes. Hopefully this changes next year to encourage people to do the smaller events like Run for the Hills or Alsea. As it stands now it makes no sense to do those races as a person can just do Mac or Marys and still place in the top of the standings. Pretty weird.

Here is the one photo I took during the race. This was the first real pack of people I caught up to.

Cashew Sauce https://chadneu.com/cashew-sauce/ https://chadneu.com/cashew-sauce/#respond Sun, 18 Oct 2026 18:57:09 +0000 https://chadneu.com/?p=7153 Cashew sauce is amazing. It's even more amazing when you ferment it for a day or so.

]]>
I had never really had cashew sauce or “cheese” until a few years ago when Aaron Adams over at the now-defunct Fermentor had it in his book. Cashew sauce/spread is amazing. It’s so ridiculously versatile and delicious.

A fascinating thing you can do with cashew sauce is ferment it. This means leaving it on the counter, or in your incubator, until it reaches the desired taste. This can be 8 hours, 12 hours, 24, 48, etc. Keep tasting it until you find it more tasty and then arrest the ferment by throwing it in the fridge.

This recipe is based on the pizza beans recipe.

Base recipe:

  • 13 oz cashews
  • Water until you get the consistency you want. At least 3/4 cup.
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar1
  • 5 tbsp nutritional yeast
  • 2 tsp salt, to taste
  • 2 tsp pepper, to taste

1: anything acidic works here. lemon juice, lime juice, white vinegar, etc. The flavor will be different depending on what you use.

Procedure:

  • Start off by soaking the cashews in very hot water until they’re pretty soft, about 30 minutes. Cold water takes longer, like overnight.
  • Add all ingredients to your high-speed blender/food processor2.
  • Blend while adding water. Stop to scrape the sides often. I usually blend for 3-5 seconds, remix the sauce, keep blending and adding water until the desired consistency/smoothness is reached3.
  • Season to taste as you go.

2: I use a 900 watt ninja smoothie blender. It works well but can struggle when the sauce is on the thicker side.
3: Blending will heat your sauce which will thin it out. Keep this in mind when choosing your consistency. It will thicken a bit as it cools.

Optional additions:

  • fresh garlic or garlic powder
  • onion or onion powder
  • sumac?
  • italian seasonings
  • white pepper
  • jalapeno
  • plant milk instead of water

The recipe site Simply CeeCee has a few variations on this. I like their stuff. Go check them out. The spicy green recipe is great. Ambitious Kitchen has a cheese sauce version; they seem amazed by nutritional yeast. Rainbow Plant Life has some fun variations as well.

So I started riding dirt bikes with Zuzu. I stupidly tapped the front brake and went over the bars. Fun stuff. Here’s the video.

Overall I’m fine. I tweaked my left ribs a bit and the bike low-sided onto my right foot which, I think, compressed the arch of my foot and caused a good amount of swelling but I think I avoided a break.

I’ll be going again in a week or two.

I have been slacking a lil bit in the posting department. As a result, this post might be a tad long. I’ve been kind of busy and will try to take everyone along in a coherent way.

In case anyone is wondering, my knee is fine. The staples are out; it has not reopened. That’s rad. I’ll have a solid scar from that. Every time I look down at my knee, or feel the weird sensations from the scar, I’ll remember how silly the whole thing was.

So what have I been up to? Well, I got off the McCully fire, went rain camping in k-falls with zuzu and then came home. On September 18th I did some quickie oil changes on some generators at stephen’s farm. I also removed my staples that night.

On the 20th I went down to Cave Junction to check out a 1985 honda goldwing 1200. I had to troubleshoot some electrical issues(loose connections) and then I tried to drive it but the clutch is being pretty shoddy. It likely needs a quickie clutch rebuild. This is TBD and I’d love to get it. It’s in not-great shape but for what I need it for it is perfect.

On the 21st I did a quickie chinti run which turned into a trail work outing.

The next day, the 22nd, Zuzu’s radiator sprung a leak. She pimps a v8 toyota tundra so a pretty large radiator. Driving to k-falls and changing a radiator in the airport parking lot sounded fun so I hopped to it. I snagged the radiator down in springfield at a napa. It took me just under 2 hours to swap the radiator out and get her going again. She’s doing checkrides for her commercial pilot’s license, so she studied while I wrenched.

The next day, the 23rd, we camped out by the mountain lakes wilderness. I ran up to lake harriette via south pass lake, which it appears nobody does. This trail, while established, isn’t listed on alltrails. Other trails into lake harriette are on alltrails. So, yeah, this makes me think nobody really takes this trail. It has a pretty intense amount of vert in the first 2ish miles. The moon was great that night which made for some fun night photography from the pixel 10 pro.

I wasn’t really planning on this but the segment down from Elkhorn Crest trail to the Twin Lakes trailhead was ripe for a segment grab. The CR was like 8 minute pace and I knew I could snag that so I did. Here’s the segment. https://www.strava.com/segments/25569811?filter=overall

I thought it was funny to do this a few days after slicing my knee open on the same trail. Live and learn. Turn and burn.

]]>
I went back up to Twin Lakes. This time I left earlier and managed to get out along the Elkhorn Crest trail for a good amount of time.

Some noteworthy parts of this run would be the intensely cold gusts of wind, which were probably 35-50 mph. Sustained winds were in the 30 mph range, I’d guestimate. I experienced graupel/hail while looking at a wildfire; that’s pretty cool. I did not clock any thunder/lightning. I got to see the goats a bit more. I noticed that the baby goat was still hanging out with another goat, a bit away from the herd. I took video of it. I’m pretty confident the adult goat’s back right leg is broken. I hope it can recover well enough to not get destroyed by a hunter. I was running very late on getting back to camp for my work shift, so I had to turn and burn pretty damn hard on this one. I think I can probably take another 5-6 minutes off that descent strava segment. I got like 18th or 19th on it. We’ll see. I had a chat with 2 of the archeologists on the fire, which I guess there are archeologists on this fire because of mine shafts, and decided to checkout that mine safety shaft thing that I saw on the road. Fun run! The weather was very interesting.
