Listen back to Sean Stephens discuss theatrical lighting, or Steven Bardel discussing audio… we’ve figured out certain techniques to attract audience attention and tell compelling stories for theatre, and many of the lessons learned apply to VR.

So when author/director/visionary Skye  Von wrote the article ‘4 Lessons Virtual Reality and 360 Filmmakers Can Learn From The Theatre’, Rick was compelled to reach out. And Rick is not alone. Over 337,000 readers read this article with great interest.

Skye’s work goes beyond writing. One of her latest projects is a music-video-VR-experience for the band Aloud, ‘Falling Out of Love’. Are we at a renaissance of the music video?

Skye joins Rick to discuss the 4 lessons for VR from theatre, and other projects she’s working on or inspired by.

From that point, Barden knew where his career path would lay.

In 1994, Barden joined Sound Dogs in Toronto as an assistant dialogue editor and went on to become a supervising sound editor, sound designer and vice president of the company.

As a first-call sound supervisor in Canada and the United States, Barden has worked on such films as Cube, Requiem For A Dream, The Aristocrats, The Fountain, Pompeii and the Resident Evil franchise including the forthcoming Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. He has also contributed to television series including Due South, Durham County, Beauty and the Beast, Departures, Descending and The Colony and is very proud to remain active in the documentary and independent film community in Toronto, recently completing John Kastner’s Life With Murder, NCR: Not Criminally Responsible and Out of Mind, Out of Sight: Inside the Brockville Psych as well as Shelly Saywell’s Low Down Tracks. He is a multiple Genie, Gemini and M.P.S.E. Golden Reel award winner and nominee. In 2013 and 2014, he has been nominated for three awards in the sound categories of the Canadian Screen Awards (Canadian Academy Awards), winning in 2014 for The Mortal Instruments and 2015 for Pompeii.

Barden’s career has taken him to the major centers of film production in North America where he feels at home in studios in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, New York and Los Angeles. He’s also worked recording, editing and mixing jobs in China, Africa, France and the UK.

Sheridan College

Barden studied film at Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario, Canada and he returned there in the early 2000’s as a part-time faculty member teaching sound and sound design. He has remained active at Sheridan since then. Barden holds a masters degree in Creative and Media Education from Bournemouth University in England and is a member of the Directors Guild of Canada, the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television and the Motion Picture Sound Editors guild. He considers himself to be very lucky to have been invited to speak at Harvard University, University of Chichester, UCLA and Columbia University for the CILECT North America Post-Production Symposium.

Barden is the Acting Coordinator of the MASSIVE program, Music Applied to Stage, Screen and Interactive Visual Environments.

A huge fan of film, basketball and of all types of music, his favourite sounds are the squeak of sneakers on a gym floor, a Harmon-muted trumpet and children playing in a schoolyard. He currently lives with his family in Burlington, Ontario.

Playing a malleable role at the NFB, Vincent often switches between technical director, information architect, UX designer, and programmer to help filmmakers and artists use technology to tell stories in creative and innovative ways.

His work in interactive documentary includes the Webby award-winning projects Bear 71, Welcome to Pine Point, the Last Hunt and God’s Lake Narrows.

When not tinkering with the latest story-telling technologies, Vincent enjoys sharing his knowledge of interactive media as an instructor at UBC, BCIT and FDU.

On this episode, we discuss the work Vincent is developing including Cardboard Crash. In a world of AI and self-driving cars, who determines the ethics algorithm to handle emergency situations? In this VR vignette, the user is slowed down to bullet-time, becoming the computer, and forced to confront a hard decision where there is plenty of data, but no easy answer.

He worked on The Raccoons television series as well as the For Better or Worse Christmas special and The Bestest Present and Babar & Father Christmas.

From there, he went on to establish the Animation program at Algonquin College which was the first of its kind to incorporate computers into a traditional curriculum. He developed and delivered a series of fast-track Digital Animation programs.

Gerry is currently teaching in the Game Development program specializing in board game design and cinematics. He’s working with a board game publisher to further develop and refine one of his board game creations which is expected to launch on Kickstarter later this year.

At this time he’s also overseeing the development of a Sudoku-like puzzle app that is designed to help students improve their math skills. He’s constantly learning and always interested in learning new ways to teach and learn.

His interest in VR goes back to the early days of VRML where he created 3D worlds and avatars with a programming partner. He experienced early VR rigs at Siggraph convention in the late 90’s.

Gerry’s first truly immersive experience was in a Cave automatic virtual environment (CAVE) at the University of Quebec in Outauais. They specialize in cyberpsychology using virtual environments to treat patients with phobias and additions.

As a executive member of the local IGDA, he’s co-hosted a talk on VR from one of the developers from the Ottawa-based Steel Crate Games who created the award wining VR game Everybody Keeps Talking and Nobody Explodes. Other members gave similar talks at the OIGC and MIGS.

“While at MIGS, I was able to experience a number of VR applications featuring the Oculus, Gear VR and Playstation VR systems.”

Most recently Gerry got to try out the Christie HoloStation at Algonquin’s Construction Research Center. He lives in Ottawa, Ontario Canada.
