20 years of design, importation and final assembly of high tech electronics was ironically very useful in the recreation of the rock painting kit. The same rules applied, using different countries for their strengths to make a great product. Pen tips are manufactured in Japan. Inks are mixed in Italy. Packaging and partial assembly is done in China and design, essential oils and final assembly is done in the United States for product safety compliance and quality control.

This Art Doesn’t Fit My Ideas!

We made rock painting a new tradition. I was buying rock painting kits of every kind, but none to our satisfaction. Kits either had dried out paint pods, or the brushes would be frayed, sometimes the rocks would be small or uneven and the design transfers wouldn’t stick. Each time my son struggled to find the right words, crying “this art does not fit my ideas, REDO IT!”, and what started in an effort to help him actually ended up being much more.

While waiting for my appointment, I thought back on a memory with a smile…. A quick trip to the store to buy a gift for a friend and leaving with only a toy for my 4 year old son. I was even less thrilled at the mess it would create. At home, I helped him open the contents of his rock painting kit. Surprisingly, I enjoyed the experience and was really touched at how excited he was to hide his rock for a friend to find.

Escaping Time

In the waiting room at MD Anderson, everyone I was surrounded by was trying to pass time. Some patients would have as many as five appointments a day. Most were not in good health or spirits. We were stressed thinking of the future. We needed a way to escape and pass time.

It is when you least expect it that it all comes to you. I was at MD Anderson Cancer Center’s waiting room when it finally occurred me. I knew how to recreate the coloring book! It would incorporate all the things I loved, kindness, essential oils, and of course coloring. Now it seemed so simple to me.

I would recreate the coloring book to be a kindness rock kit accept the rocks would be custom made for a flat, smooth, light colored finish. Each rock would have a printed pattern on it to be colored in. The paint pens would be scented with essential oils. The instructions would read that after each piece of art was finished, to write a positive message on the back of the rock and then place it somewhere for someone else to find. This not only incorporated all the things I loved, it made coloring have purpose. On this day, Chakra Creations was developed to bring hope, relieve us of our fears and to make a kinder world.

Why Are You Crying #7

Outside of work I have a few hobbies. I teach my son kindness. I enjoy reading and learning about holistic healing. I have a collection of essential oils that I like to mix for fragrance and health. I meditate daily. And occasionally I color. I knew that whatever I created, it had to include all of these things I loved.

Because of my line of work, I am always creating product and I wanted to recreate the coloring book to have more purpose. Seemed simple. It wasn’t! No matter how much I thought about it, I could not find that perfect idea.

I may be overthinking. Yes, I totally agreed adult coloring is helpful in reducing stress and placing you in the present moment. I also enjoy creating my own piece of art. But I still feel like there should be more purpose. What do you do with the finished art? I try to live a minimalist lifestyle, despite the fact Im my mother’s child. (Mom has an entire storage room called “the gift shop”. It is filled with stuff that still has price tags!) Most likely I will throw away anything I color. It seems a little wasteful.

Why Are You Crying #4

There is much more to adult coloring than I initially gave it credit for. Use to I would pass by the coloring books at the check out lines and just think, why? But I now understand its purpose. This simple activity can place your mind in the here and the now in seconds. First you have to find your picture, then you have to decide the colors for each area and the pressure and direction of each stroke. The entire process can take hours and the best part is the satisfaction at the end, a finished piece of art.
