Good afternoon. From the heart of Prince Edward County, I’m Will Pearson with your County FM News.

The municipal campaign trail continues in the County. Last night, the three mayoral candidates were in Picton. Brenda Little was there.

The Picton Rotary club hosted a mayoral candidates meeting yesterday at the yacht club. Rotarians submitted their questions and of course the main issues were addressed including roads, debt, water, and the Picton terminals. One exception to the format was a question raised by PEFAC Board Vice Chair Monica Alyea. [Clip]

Although Ernie Margetson, Brad Neiman, and Terry Short recognized the importance of the PEFAC, no promises were made and all agreed that the budget will determine how much the municipality can contribute. (1 min.).

In provincial education news: Ontario’s minister of colleges and universities has barred three career colleges from offering publicly-funded student financial assistance until at least 2030. Initially, Nolan Quinn had blocked six schools, including four Academy of Learning locations, from the Ontario Student Assistance Program just for this year. Quinn’s decision followed government inspections that found evidence suggesting third parties were completing the coursework — sometimes entire courses in one day — and a few students who couldn’t name their school or program. Rules governing the sector say that if an institution is found to be in non-compliance with those rules, they will not be eligible for OSAP for three years. Most of the schools are fighting the ruling in court, arguing that Quinn’s decision was unreasonable and procedurally unfair.

In provincial health news: Ontario’s medical regulator has approved significant changes to the way doctors prescribe, in an effort to reduce the amount of opioids making their way to the streets. One of the changes will require that patients take the safer supply medications in front of health-care professionals, rather than take the pills home. The new policy has the potential for a larger effect on those living in rural Ontario who are not close to a pharmacy. Another concern is for employees who might have difficulties getting to a pharmacy every day to take their medications. The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario will not go ahead with an eight-week time limit for physicians to prescribe safer supply medications, a move it had previously considered.

In other provincial news: Ontario is set to move parts of the province’s northwest region, west of the 90th meridian, to permanent daylight time in order to align with Manitoba. British Columbia has moved to permanent Pacific daylight time. Alberta also switched to permanent daylight time this year in what it calls Alberta time, which means it now has the same time as Saskatchewan year-round.

Finally, in international news with regional implications: A 42-year-old man was killed while riding a roller-coaster in Georgia yesterday. He was thrown from his seat and struck other patrons before landing below the ride. Several others were injured. Similar roller-coasters in North America have been closed “out of an abundance of caution,” including two at Canada’s Wonderland near Toronto and one at Montreal’s La Ronde amusement park. Such incidents are very rare. The cause is still under investigation.

Sports

In the NHL last night, all seven Canadian teams were in action, with three of them losers. The Toronto Maple Leafs lost 5 – 4 in Utah. The Ottawa Senators lost 7 – 2, to the visiting St. Louis Blues. And the New York Islanders beat the Vancouver Canucks 3 – 2, extending their losing streak to five games. In the win column, the Montreal Canadiens prevailed in a 4-3 shoot-out win over the Buffalo Sabres. The Winnipeg Jets beat the visiting Minnesota Wild 5 – 2. For their fifth win in a row, the Edmonton Oilers defeated the winless L.A. Kings 4 – 1. And the Calgary Flames won 4 – 2 in Anaheim. Tonight, the Canadiens visit the Washington Capitals.

Last night, in MLB’s best-of-seven ALCS, the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Cleveland Guardians 3 – 1 to tie the series at one win apiece. The NLCS resumes tonight in L.A., with the Milwaukee Brewers ahead of the Dodgers two games to nil.

In their NBA pre-season home-opener last night, the Toronto Raptors blew out the defending champion New York Knicks 148 – 98. The Raptors are 2 and 1 so far in the pre-season.

Finally, in MLS tonight, Toronto FC hosts Orlando City, the Western-Conference-leading Vancouver Whitecaps visit St. Louis City, and CF Montreal hosts Atlanta United.

LOCAL

In local news, the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Foundation announced that donations are nearing the $30-million Back the Build campaign goal, The Foundation estimates that the goal will be reached by March 31, 2027. That will be nine months before the forecasted opening date of the new hospital in December 2027.

A local resident, David Binet, has committed to match new gifts to Back the Build, dollar for dollar, up to $250,000. The initiative will generate $500,000 toward the approximately $800,000 remaining, putting the Foundation within reach of completing the historic campaign.

The $250,000 matching commitment forms part of a larger major gift to PECMH Foundation that will be formally announced in 2027. By making a portion of the gift available now as a match, Mr. Binet hopes to inspire others to join the final push for the new Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital.

OPP

As we prepare to gather for Thanksgiving celebrations, the OPP are reminding everyone to make safe choices as they travel to and from their destination this long weekend.

The OPP is joining police services across Canada for Operation Impact, an annual national traffic safety initiative led by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police. The campaign supports Canada’s Road Safety Strategy and focuses on high-risk driving behaviours that contribute to serious collisions. It aims to create safer streets and highways across Canada.

Over the last 10 years in Ontario, Thanksgiving weekends have had the second highest number of fatalities among all long weekends. Last year alone, 13 people lost their lives in roadway collisions in OPP jurisdictions. Alcohol and drug use remain the leading factors in fatalities over the last decade, while failing to wear safety equipment, such as seat belts, helmets and life jackets, continues to be a significant contributor.

In support of Operation Impact, OPP officers will be patrolling across Ontario to help prevent high-risk behaviours and enforce road safety.

JOBS

On the economic front, Canada lost 68,000 jobs in September, according to Statistics Canada, marking a second month of losses in a row. The unemployment rate rose to 6.5 per cent.

The decline was concentrated in youth aged 15 to 24, who accounted for 70% of the job losses. StatsCan says job losses were split between full- and part-time work and were concentrated in the public sector.

The decline follows 42,000 job losses in August, which came as a surprise to economists and snapped a hot streak for the labour market. Before the two monthly declines, Statistics Canada data showed employment trending upward, with 181,000 jobs added between April and July. Employment is still up compared to a year ago by 95,000 positions.

And finally, Canadian author Anne Carson was awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature yesterday for her bold and inventive works that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, have created new forms for contemporary literature.

Anne Carson was born in 1950 in Toronto. In 1981, she published her doctoral thesis in Classics and has, throughout her entire career, combined poetry writing with translation work and teaching at various universities.

The selection panel noted her collaborations with visual artists, choreographers and opera and theatre directors, demonstrate the freedom with which she relates to literary expectations and rule systems. It is these collaborations that lie behind the outstanding importance her work has had for the international art and literature scene.

Good afternoon. From the heart of Prince Edward County, I’m Will Pearson with your County FM News.

The municipal campaign trail continues in the County. Last night, the three mayoral candidates were in Wellington. Brenda Little has more.

It was meet and greet the three mayoral candidates in Wellington last night. The Highline room at the community centre was packed to capacity with predominantly senior residents eager to hear what the candidates had to say. The format included 2 minutes for the candidates to introduce themselves, followed by 4 main questions to be answered, and the evening

finished with a half hour for residents to speak individually with Ernie Margetson, Brad Neiman, and Terry Short. There was no open floor time allotted. The question of strong mayor powers was presented, to which all candidates stated they would not use the power. The Water and Wastewater issue was answered somewhat differently by the three, then there was a question about affordable housing and jobs for the retention of young people. Terry Short and Ernie Margetson promoted the idea of increased tourism to 3 seasons while Brad Neiman hopes to attract small industry. The final question addressed issues regarding responses to climate emergencies such as smoke, fire, and floods and how the residents and infrastructure would be protected. All three talked about plans already in place that are frequently modified.

In other local news: In court yesterday, Picton Terminals objected to an expert’s affidavit, arguing that the expert was in a conflict. An independent, arm’s-length expert will re-submit the affidavit at the next scheduled court date on November 3rd. In health news: The World Health Organization released today its first-ever international guidelines on managing childhood obesity. The new guidance recommends a broad range of interventions to manage diet, boost physical activity, and change behaviours for the sky-rocketing numbers of youth living with obesity. And in certain cases, for some older children and teenagers, that could also mean medication or bariatric surgery, but only when a supervised lifestyle program hasn’t achieved results, and under strict conditions for youth living with severe obesity. In Canada, physicians have recommended only using medications to manage obesity in children after the age of 12, two years above the WHO’s cutoff age, and don’t stipulate that medical intervention should only be tried after lifestyle changes.

Finally, the seventh annual Kids Can’t Wait Radiothon is live today, broadcasting for 12 hours across the county. The community event features stories of local children and youth to raise crucial funds for The Children’s Foundation. Every dollar raised helps to cover costs for sports programs, summer camps, and dance or art lessons. Donations also provide access to essential mental health counselling and help students pursue post-secondary education through scholarships. Local radio stations and community partners have joined forces to ensure every child has the opportunity to thrive. You can make a difference right now by joining the effort during this 12-hour broadcast. To give, call 613-921-KIDS.

Sports

PECI’s senior boys’ soccer team beat Centennial 2 – 1 yesterday, putting them in third place, only three points off the league lead. They’ll play undefeated Bayside tomorrow.

Also last night, the Picton Pirates lost 8 – 6 to the Lakefield Chiefs, to fall two points behind the Chiefs for fourth spot. The Pirates are back home tomorrow night to host the Frankford Huskies, who lead the division.

In NHL action last night, three Canadian teams were in action. The Toronto Maple Leafs edged

the Nashville Predators 5 – 4 in overtime, the Montreal Canadiens lost 6 – 4 to the defending Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes, and the Ottawa Senators were defeated 5 – 3 by the Detroit Red Wings. Tonight, the Winnipeg Jets host the Colorado Avalanche, and the Edmonton Oilers visit Anaheim.

In soccer last night, the Canadian men’s national team was shut out 1 – 0 by the U.S., Canada’s first loss in three friendlies during the international window.

Finally, in MLS last night, the Western-Conference-leading Vancouver Whitecaps lost 3 – 1 to the Chicago Fire.

Lennox and Addington County OPP have issued an advisory for the area around Deseronto Road and County Road 12 in Greater Napanee due to an ongoing police investigation. There is no immediate threat to the public but there will be an increased police presence. Until further notice, people should avoid the area if possible and follow any instructions by officers on the scene if they are near the police operation.

A domestic dispute in Belleville last night has resulted in charges for both parties. Belleville Police responded to a residence at North Front Street Monday where a woman said a man punched her following an argument. At the same time, a man reported to Belleville Police Services that he had also been assaulted during the same incident and punched by the woman. A 38-year-old Belleville man has been charged with spousal assault and failing to comply with a probation order and a 34-year-old Belleville woman has been charged with spousal assault.

The Minister of Colleges, Universities, Research Excellence and Security, Nolan Quinn, announced today that OSAP funding payments for all private post secondary insitutions are being suspended. Quinn said the Ministry has been investigating complaints and issues related to private institutions since 2024. Following a third party audit by KPMG the government has also asked the Ontario Provincial Police to join the investigation. The Minister said many of the issues relate to online only programs and the government will therefore be introducing legislation which will exclude these programs from OSAP funding. He also said that additional requirements will be imposed on all private institutions before restoring OSAP funding eligibility. The government intends to provide low interest third party loans to students attending private institutions to help bridge the gap while OSAP funding is unavailable.”

The Federal Government has given Cleveland-Cliffs, the US owner of Stelco in Hamilton, an ultimatum. The company has five business days to provide a plan to maintain jobs at the Hamilton steelmaker or face legal action. Ohio-based Cleveland-Cliffs said last week it plans to lay off up to 500 workers because of tariffs but the federal government says that violates “binding commitments” made when the company was granted permission to buy the company in 2024. Industry Minister Mélanie Joly said the company’s commitments “do not cease to apply simply because business strategy or market conditions have changed.” If the company is found to be in breech of it’s agreement the court could order financial penalties or force Cleveland-Cliffs to sell Stelco.

Meanwhile, the governments of Ontario and Canada announced a partnership today that will see them invest more than $203,000 to help protect steel and manufacturing workers in the Hamilton area. The funding is being provided through the Canada-Ontario Workforce Tariff Response and will help workers and job seekers upgrade skills or transition to in-demand careers.

And in some surprising news, US tariffs seem to be having an unintended effect on Canada’s trade surplus. Canadian exports to the US were up 8.1 percent in August while imports from the US fell by 2.5 percent according to Statistics Canada. Even with energy products removed, Canada exported more with a strong showing in some surprising sectors. Consumer goods, machinery and equipment and electronics exports all increased significantly. But it may not may not be sustainable. September saw the introduction of additional tariffs by both countries and that could have a downward impact on the numbers going forward.

Sports

It was a busy week for the PECI Panthers.

In rugby action, the senior girls dominated the Nicks 44–10, with Ezri Cordes scoring three tries while the juniors picked up a 26–12 win.

On the soccer pitch, both boys teams were 1–1 on the week. The seniors opened with a 4–0 win against Eastside on Tuesday. Easton VanHeck delivered the clean sheet. But the Panthers lost 4–0 to St. Theresa on Thursday. The juniors earned a 2–1 win over Eastside Tuesday, then narrowly lost 3–2 against St. Theresa Thursday.

In volleyball, the senior boys were competitive against Bayside but ended up with a 3rd set loss, while the juniors bounced back with a three-set win.

Listen for your weekly Panthers update every Tuesday at 4 and 6 pm on County FM.

In local hockey action today, the Dukes host the Leaside Flyers this afternoon starting at 5 pm while the Picton Pirates face off at 7:30 pm against the Lakefield Chiefs.

In the NHL, Toronto hosts Nashville, Carolina visits Montreal and the Senators are in Detroit. All three games start at 7 pm.

And Major League Baseball playoffs continue with Los Angeles in Atlanta and Milwaukee in San Diego. The Dodgers and Braves are tied at one game apiece while the Brewers lead the Padres 2 games to none.

A new fund has been established to support a sustainable future for Picton Food Bank. Last year, the Picton United Church Food Bank provided over 110,000 meals For this year they are experiencing a 40% increase in visits to the food bank. This sharp and sudden increase reflects the escalating number of families and individuals dealing with food insecurity in the County.

To respond to this critical need, a new fund called the Picton Food Bank Endowment Fund has been established at The County Foundation. The Picton Food Bank is seeking to raise an initial $1 million, which will generate interest that can be used by the food bank annually to ensure shelves are stocked with meat, dairy, fruits and vegetables, dried goods and other essentials.

The idea for the Fund comes from Picton Food Bank volunteer, Mark Houghton and his wife Erika, who see it as a way to help alleviate the uncertainty that comes from operating a food bank that is dependant on fluctuating community donations. And to ensure that the Fund gets off to a healthy start, the Picton couple have seeded it with a donation of $100,000.

Still on the local scene, The County of Prince Edward is partnering with Quinte Transit to offer free transit to all electors on Advanced Voting Day on Saturday, October 17 and on Election Day on Monday, October 26.

Poll locations, opening hours and transit schedule can be found on the County website.

NEXUS

The Canada Border Services Agency announced deadlines for Canadians applying for Nexus travel card. Nexus cards expedite the border clearance process for travellers between Canada and the U.S. and may grant access to priority lanes at certain points of entry.

Starting April 1, 2027, applicants must schedule their enrolment interviews within two years of receiving conditional approval. This is an update from the five-year time-frame CBSA temporarily extended due to delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Applicants who are conditionally approved before April 1, 2027 must schedule their interview within five years of their approval date, or by April 1, 2029, depending on which day comes first.

For anyone still waiting for an interview, CBSA said to book your appointment as soon as possible so your application does not expire.
After submitting an application, would-be Nexus travellers need to schedule an interview with both CBSA and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

And finally, if the skies clear tonight as predicted, there is a good chance of seeing the Northern Lights this evening until about 11 PM. You will need to be in dark area like the South Shore to get the best chance to see the lights in the north sky.

I Know That Voice presents a special dedication to the late, great Kevin Conroy. Conroy is most famous and beloved for his performance as Batman in the 90’s Batman: The Animated Series, a role which he would reprise for 30 years in various cartoons, films, and video games. We lost Conroy in 2022 and this episode will be a long overdue tribute to one of the greatest men to ever work in the voiceover industry.

News

Good afternoon. From the heart of Prince Edward County, I’m Will Pearson with your County FM News.

A reminder that today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund will partner once again with radio stations across Canada, including County FM, for A Day to Listen. This year’s theme is Honouring Truth with Action.

In finance news: The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives has just published a report comparing the minimum wage and the living wage in Ontario. The minimum wage is the minimum amount the provincial government requires employers to pay workers. The minimum wage is adjusted for inflation each year, and, for most employees, it will increase to $17.95 tomorrow. However, the minimum wage bears no relation to the actual cost of living. The living wage corresponds to the amount workers need to live a decent life, affording basic needs like food, shelter, and transportation, as well as modest community participation expenses, such as a modest vacation and after-school activities for children. The report shows the gap between Ontario’s minimum wage and living wage continues to grow. Female and racialized workers are more likely to earn less than the living wage. The Centre for Policy Alternatives recommends that the provincial government raise the minimum wage to the living wage rate – a single change that would considerably improve the lives of more than 1.5 million workers in Ontario.

Also in finances: According to the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy, the number of consumer insolvencies in Ontario in the second quarter of 2026 increased by over 10 per cent from the same quarter a year earlier. The data also shows the number of filings in Ontario is rising at a faster rate than other provinces.

In health news: New research recently published in The Lancet Oncology linked an estimated 12 per cent of all new caner cases worldwide in 2024 to viruses, bacteria, and other microbes. These infections can increase the risk of a number of different cancers, including stomach cancer, cervical cancer, some head and neck cancers, and liver cancer. The rates of some of these cancers can be reduced with vaccination programs.

In international news, the Israeli government believes that a FlyDubai pilot tried to crash a commercial plane en route to Tel Aviv after stabbing the co-pilot. An Israeli passenger and a crew member responded by entering the cockpit. The alleged attacker was subdued, with a separate crew member managing to stabilize the plane. Reuters has reported that the Israeli government assessed the incident as an attempted “terror attack.” Apparently, both pilots have been hospitalized after sustaining injuries. All other passengers are otherwise safe.

Finally, the OPP are searching for a missing County woman who might be travelling in a white, 2019 four-door Jeep Wrangler, with Ontario license plate DAXY 040. Forty-three-year old Ashley Bryant is described as 5’1″ with a slim build and curly, short brown hair, although she might be wearing a wig with straight, shoulder-length hair. She was last seen wearing a black jacket, tan tank top, ripped jeans, and brown boots, around 3:30 PM on September 25 near County Road 12. If you spot her, or have any information, please contact the OPP immediately.

allow motorists to enter their licence plate number which will then be used for enforcement. Drivers using the two-hour free parking available in the Front, Riverside, Riggs and Pinnacle lots still need to register so the two hour window can be monitored but they won’t need to pay unless they add more time. There are no changes for those that use the Hotspot App.

And in the UK a decision by the U.K.’s counterterrorism police to release five suspects on bail during an investigation into a suspected bomb plot at a U.S.-operated airbase in England has raised eybrows and attracted Donald Trump’s attention. Police confirmed Tuesday that no explosives were found in three vans linked to the suspects but a quantity of petrol was. Investigators said the decision to grant bail was grounded in “experience and strategy”. President Trump told reporters yesterday that he was surprised that the suspects were released and would not have done so if the decision had been his to make. British authorities have said the investigation is ongoing and that they have not ruled out involvement by Iran.

Sports

In local sports action yesterday, PECI’s senior boys’ soccer team beat Eastside 4 – 0, to remain undefeated on the season. In rugby, the PECI junior and senior girls’ teams both beat NCC.

The NHL regular season started last night, with four Canadian teams in action. The Montreal Canadiens defeated the Leafs 3 – 2 in Toronto, and the Vancouver Canucks beat the Edmonton Oilers 6 – 5 in overtime. Tonight, the Leafs host the New York Rangers.

In the first games of MLB’s best-of-three Wild Card Series yesterday, the Chicago White Sox defeated the Houston Astros 6 – 3, and the New York Yankees thumped the Boston Red Sox 9 – 0 in the AL. In the NL, Atlanta beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5 – 3, and the San Diego Padres rolled to an 8 – 0 victory over the Chicago Cubs. They’ll all play again today.

In the WNBA playoffs last night, the Indiana Fever defeated the defending champion Las Vegas Aces 99 – 89 to tie their best-of-three series at one win apiece. The number-8 seeded New York Liberty advanced to the semi-finals with an 87 – 71 victory over the top-seeded Minnesota Lynx. Tonight, the Atlanta Dream and the Golden State Valkyries take 1 – 0 leads into their second games against the Washington Mystics and the Dallas Wings.

In UEFA Nations League soccer action yesterday, World-Cup-winner Spain defeated Croatia 4 – 1, and England beat Czechia 2 – 0.

That’s your County FM sports. I’ll have your County FM extended weather forecast next.

News

The Prince Edward Learning Centre’s popular PEC Fresh Market is closing. The market was open to anyone and provided low cost fresh produce from local producers. The locations in Sophiasburg and Consecon have already closed their doors and the Picton market’s last day will be October 21st. Prince Edward Learning Centre Executive Director Kathleen Kennedy spoke about the closings earlier today on the Tuesday Grapevine, telling host Suzanne O’Connor that a combination of reduced funding and a need to focus on those most in need of food support forced the closure. Kennedy had this to say (Play Audio Below). Kennedy also said those with gift cards can still contact the centre and order food. But all is not lost, Kennedy said she and her team hope to introduce a PEC Fresh 2.0 within a few months. You can listen to the Grapevine interview with Kathleen Kennedy after the 6 pm news tonight or from our archives at 993countyfm.ca.

The Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board had some good news to share at their first meeting of the year. Enrollment has increased at elementary schools within the board which will mean seven additional teachers and six Early Childhood Educators will be hired. The Board also had some good news from the joint HPEDSB – Hastings and Prince Edward Learning Foundation “Have You Heard?” Campaign. The fundraising campaign has raised more than $550,000 which will mean every Kindergarten to Grade 3 classroom will now have a Soundfield system. The Soundfield system helps those with hearing difficulties or English Second Language challenges hear and understand classroom communications.

Parking is going to get a bit simpler in Belleville. City staff announced today that parking machines in municipal lots have been upgraded to allow motorists to enter their licence plate number which will then be used for enforcement. Drivers using the two-hour free parking available in the Front, Riverside, Riggs and Pinnacle lots still need to register so the two hour window can be monitored but they won’t need to pay unless they add more time. There are no changes for those that use the Hotspot App.

News

Sean Ward, the 29 year old man accused of initiating a gun battle and shooting Belleville Police Constable Jeff Smith outside the Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Belleville on Sunday night, has died. The Ontario Special Investigations Unit confirmed this afternoon that Ward died of his injuries sometime last night. Ward, a former Canadian Armed Forces member from Quinte West, approached the Synagogue as Yom Kippur services were starting. Ward allegedly fired on Smith who was in an unmarked car outside the Synagogue. Smith along with a second officer returned fire. Smith and Ward were both seriously injured in the gun battle that followed. Constable Smith is reported to be in critical but stable condition in hospital. The SIU is continuing to investigate the incident.

And Belleville Sikhs have added their voice to those who have condemned the violence in Belleville Sunday night. The Gurudwara Guru Nanak Darbar, Belleville and the Ontario Sikhs and Gurudwara Council issued a joint statement on behalf of the members of the Sikh community this afternoon condemning the shooting and saying no Canadian should feel fear, intimidation, or the threat of violence while gathering to pray. They also expressed their gratitude and respect for Constable Jeff Smith.

Outgoing County Mayor Steve Ferguson has decided not to use his strong mayor powers to overturn a council decision rejecting the water and wastewater financial strategy. Ferguson previously informed council that he was considering using those powers to reverse an 8 to 6 council vote that rejected a $255 million financial strategy for water and wastewater. The rejection by council brings major infrastructure projects to a halt but avoids increases to water bills and developer charges. Mayor Ferguson issued a statement this afternoon saying that after consultation and careful consideration he has decided not to overturn the decision and will instead leave it to the next council to work out a solution. Ferguson added that when strong mayor powers were first announced by the province he made it known that he felt council members needed to play a meaningful role in council decisions and that he would be reluctant to use his powers to overrule a vote.

A note to County drivers, the intersection of Finnegan Drive and County Road 49 has been closed as part of the third phase of the Picton Main St. reconstruction project. The closure is expected to last a couple of weeks and will allow the contractor to connect new sanitary and storm sewers. Access to the Wellings and community mailboxes will be via the entrance to H. J. McFarland Memorial Home during the closure.

And, Tara McGrath and Jessica Walker have been award the Jean Lynch Memorial Scholarship for this year. The Jean Lynch scholarship provides awards of $1,000 to H. J. McFarland Memorial Home employees or their children or grandchildren who are pursuing post secondary education. Ms. McGrath will use her award to continue her studies in recreation therapy while Ms. Walker is studying is working towards a Registered Practical Nursing designation.

And we’ve all heard of a Convenience Store but what about an Inconvenience Store. Well, one opened in Seattle this weekend. It features things like pre-tangled USB cords, shoulder bags made from old Cheetos bags and a Landline iphone that when answered only plays “Vertigo” by U2. Turns out it’s actuall and art installation but artists Lilia Deering and Mary Anne Carter. Deering and Carter previously made the news for a spoof of IKEA stores in 2024 called “STÖR.”

Sports

In PECI Panthers Secondary School action this week, the Girls Rugby team did well in preseason play. Ezri Cordes and Mylee Graham scored two tries each while Emerson Bedore added one and Junior standout Hartley Wallach touched down three times. On the golf course, Colin Lunn shot a team-best 78, followed by Caleb Krentz at 82 and Everett Vader at 83. Aylie Heffernan led the girls with a 115 as they prepare for the Bay of Quinte championship.

In Elementary action the Panthers laced up for cross-country today at Sandbanks.

Regular seasons for Rugby, Soccer and Basketball start this week and next so tune in to hear all the PECI Sports news every Tuesday at 4 and 6 pm..

Lots of professional sports action tonight.

The Blue Jay’s season is all but done as they face Baltimore for the second game of a three game series with the Orioles. It’s still mathematically possible for them to make the wildcard but increasingly unlikely. First pitch for tonight’s game goes out at 6:35 in Baltimore.

In WNBA play, the Toronto Tempo tip off with the Chicago Sky at 8 in the Windy City. The Tempo are also out of the playoff picture this year.

And, in NHL preseason play, Edmonton is in Winnipeg for an 8 pm start against the Jets and Vancouver is in Calgary. The Canucks and the Flames drop the puck at 9.
