LA Junior Kings Announce Mike Buckley (Kings Goaltending Coach) as Goaltending Development Coordinator

Elite NHL and International Coaching Experience to Benefit LA Junior Kings Youth Goaltenders

El Segundo, Calif. — The LA Junior Kings are proud to announce the addition of Mike Buckley, the LA Kings Goalie Coach (NHL), as the organization’s Goaltending Development Coordinator, bringing decades of elite coaching experience and a proven track record of developing goaltenders at the highest levels of hockey.

Buckley joins the LA Junior Kings with an accomplished coaching career that began with the creation of a unique development model through Goaltending Development Services (GDS), which has produced 42 NCAA Division I goaltenders and four NHL draft picks while helping establish a tradition of goaltending excellence throughout New England.

Buckley went on to become the first American-born goaltending coach to win the Stanley Cup, accomplishing the feat in 2016 and again in 2017 as a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins coaching staff. He joined the LA Kings in 2023, where the organization’s goaltenders have enjoyed tremendous success, including NHL All-Star Cam Talbot and Vezina Trophy finalist and Olympian Darcy Kuemper.

Most recently, Buckley served as Team USA’s goaltending coach as the United States captured the gold medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics behind the stellar play of goaltender Connor Hellebuyck.

As part of his new role, Buckley will oversee and support the development of youth goaltenders throughout the LA Junior Kings organization. His focus will include technical skill development, game awareness, performance mindset training, and helping young athletes establish the habits necessary for long-term success both on and off the ice.

“I am excited to join the LA Junior Kings and contribute to one of the premier youth hockey organizations in the country,” said Buckley. “Developing young goaltenders is a passion of mine, and I look forward to helping these athletes build confidence, improve their skills, and reach their full potential.”

Buckley’s coaching philosophy emphasizes strong fundamentals, positional efficiency, game-reading ability, a competitive mindset, and individualized development plans tailored to each athlete’s needs. His experience coaching at the NHL, international, collegiate, and youth levels provides a unique opportunity for LA Junior Kings goaltenders to learn from one of the sport’s most respected goaltending coaches.

“We are thrilled to welcome Mike to the LA Junior Kings family,” said Tommy Tartaglione. “His experience, reputation, and commitment to player development make him an incredible resource for our goaltenders and coaching staff. Mike’s addition reinforces our commitment to providing best-in-class development opportunities for every athlete in our program.”

Buckley will work closely with goaltenders across multiple age groups, providing on-ice instruction, development clinics, seasonal evaluations, and mentorship opportunities designed to help players maximize their growth and performance.

The LA Junior Kings continue to invest in elite coaching and player development resources, ensuring that athletes have access to world-class instruction as they pursue their hockey goals.

For more information about the LA Junior Kings and their goaltending development programs, please contact the organization’s hockey operations department.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 9, 2026

California Heat Secures Path Forward with ASEC at New Reseda Ice Facility

Los Angeles, CA — California Heat Hockey and American Sports Entertainment Company (ASEC) announced today that the two organizations have begun formal collaboration to establish the future home of the California Heat at the new Reseda ice facility, set to open later in 2026.

The announcement follows a productive meeting held on April 8, where both groups aligned on a path forward for the club in response to the impending closure of the LA Kings Valley Ice Center (owned by Agora Realty & Management Inc and operated by PIM, Inc.), a long-standing hub for youth hockey in the San Fernando Valley.
Under the current plan, the Reseda facility will serve as the home rink for the California Heat beginning with the 2026–2027 season, with the club’s home games expected to be played there following the facility’s opening.

The collaboration represents a significant step toward ensuring continuity for one of the Valley’s most established youth hockey programs and reinforces a shared commitment to expanding access to the sport.

“This is an important moment for our players, families, coaching staff and the broader hockey community,” said Kelly Stirzel, Director of Hockey for the California Heat. “While this transition is challenging, we are encouraged by the progress being made and thankful for ASEC’s openness to working together as we navigate what comes next. Our priority is keeping this community together and creating a stable, long-term home for the program.”

“We are thrilled to be able to partner with Kelly and the entire California Heat Community to ensure a future home for their growing program,” said Brad Berman, President of ASEC. “With the closing of the Valley Ice Center in Panorama City, it became an immediate priority for us and our partners at the LA Kings to ensure the California Heat can continue building what is becoming a model program for youth hockey players in the Southern California Region.”

“We share in everyone’s excitement for this solution for California Heat Hockey,” said LA Kings President, Luc Robitaille. “The growth of youth ice hockey programs in Southern California sits
atop our list of priorities and we are grateful to our partners at ASEC and the great folks at California Heat Hockey for coming together to create a solution for an unfortunate and unforeseen development in the closing of the Valley Ice Center. We remain committed to supporting the California Heat and all of the growing youth hockey programs in our community.”
Both organizations noted strong alignment between ASEC’s operational expertise and the California Heat’s established programming, development pipeline, and community reach. Discussions will continue in the near term to finalize a comprehensive plan that supports both immediate needs and long-term growth.

At the same time, the California Heat remains actively engaged with local City Council offices regarding the future of the Valley Ice Center. Conversations are ongoing to explore options that support a structured transition for the thousands of families and athletes who rely on the facility.
Additional updates will be shared as plans continue to develop.

LA Lions

“Hockey is for everyone” is a slogan the sport has long embraced.

For the Los Angeles Lions Girls Tier I 14U team, it’s more than just words — it’s reality.

The LA Lions hockey program, which began with a single 8U team in 2014, had pierced the top 15 of Tier I tournament-bound teams by 2020. The program’s 14U girls team qualified for the Chipotle-USA Hockey Girls National Championships in 2021, the first year the Lions were eligible.

The Lions have grown into one of the most competitive teams in the country while staying true to a commitment to diversity and inclusivity. Since earning Tier I status in 2020, the team has consistently made its mark on the national stage, winning the Pacific District in February and qualifying for nationals four of the last five years.

Comprising of players from various ethnic and cultural backgrounds, the LA Lions roster represents a wide spectrum of identities, featuring African American, British, Canadian, Chinese, Czech, Filipino, Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese players.

For Verity Escopete, who grew up in Southern California, the Lions are more than just a competitive hockey team – they’re a family.

“When we go out to the East Coast, we definitely stand out,” Escopete said. “A lot of teams we play aren’t as diverse as we are, and that makes us really special.”

Escopete’s passion for hockey extends beyond her personal success. She’s actively involved in programs that increase access to the sport for girls from underrepresented backgrounds. She participates in Black, Silver & Bold, an initiative created by Blake Bolden, a former professional hockey player who made history as the first African American player in the National Women’s Hockey League.

Through this program, Escopete and some of her teammates help introduce young girls from diverse backgrounds to hockey by providing mentorship and guidance.

“It’s really important because little girls really look up to us; they can see their future in us,” Escopete said.

Quinn Albrecht shares a similar dedication to hockey and her community by giving back through her involvement with younger players. Her love for the game and role as a mentor helps shape the next generation of players, providing them with the same sense of inclusion and community she’s found.

Albrecht is involved with The Empowerment Effect, a program that aims to empower girls through sports, helping young women build confidence, learn leadership skills and become positive role models.

“I remember back to when I was their age; I had one of my closest friends, who is now 18, and she was like my role model,” Albrecht said. “I just want to be that to other girls, and girls should try to find or create community within themselves and just try to get girls that look like them or don’t look like them into hockey.”

Albrecht reflected on a story that illustrates the Lions’ power of diversity.

At a tournament, a young Chinese player — who was the only one of her background on her team — was excited to see so many players of similar heritage on the Lions. She approached the Lions and asked to sit with them, expressing how rare it was for her to see so many people who looked like her in one place. Albrecht found it a touching moment that underscored her team’s inclusive culture.

Andrew Stone, the Lions’ head coach, has played a key role in the team’s success. He has been with the Lions program for nearly 20 years and has led the 14U girls team since 2019. Under his leadership, the team has built a culture of perseverance and accountability, focusing on both skill development and mental toughness.

“Hockey’s a game of mistakes and failures, and it’s how you respond to that,” he said. “There’s always a morality in everything you teach as a coach. Doing things the right way, putting in the effort, the hard work, the commitment — we talk about focusing on the details and doing the little things right, and then the big things will take care of themselves.”

The Lions’ team chemistry has been vital to their success. The players share a deep bond, both on and off the ice. Whether it’s through road trips to national tournaments, intense practice sessions or supporting each other outside of hockey, the Lions have developed a unique culture that extends beyond the rink.

“We’re showing that people who look like us can come together and succeed in hockey,” Albrecht said. “Our team is going to nationals, and we’re creating an image for others who want to play. It’s creating a lot of opportunities for others, and it’s something younger girls can see in us and know they can achieve too.”

Houston’s Ice at the Galleria’s new Compete USA skating program allows their Learn to Skate USA students to experience the feeling of a real competitive environment.

Article Club Spotlight Wednesday, November 1, 2023

A group of people standing next to each other.

By Joanne Vassallo Jamrosz

Rebecca Dever, Director of Skating at Houston’s Ice at the Galleria, wanted to design a class where all levels of Learn to Skate USA students could learn about competing without requiring private lessons.

Three girls standing on top of a podium.

The new Compete USA class is now part of their Learn to Skate curriculum.

Far too often, young skaters with so much potential and spirit do not have the opportunity to advance in the wonderful sport of figure skating for a variety of reasons, Dever said. We feel we are creating an inclusive environment with a low barrier of entry, allowing more skaters to experience a full figure skating experience.

The classes are held during two eight-week semesters and cover everything a skater and parent wants or needs to know about competing, from the judging system to costumes, music and competition day protocol.

“The class helps all skaters and parents understand what it’s like to go into skating, Dever said.

They also broadened the program so that every skater registered in the Compete USA class learns a skating routine within the structure of a class setting with interchangeable elements that suit each level of skater.

Then we proudly host an in-house sanctioned competition where each skater can perform and showcase their program developed in this class,†Dever said.“We simulate every aspect of a big competition down to checking in at the appropriate time, turning in music and even receiving a goody bag.â€

Skaters also get used to skating in front of a judge’s panel.

Dever found the class gives skaters and their families confidence to venture into the competitive world.

For the parents, I think it takes a lot of stress off them, Dever said. I’lI give them checklists to follow, and the parents get in the habit of what to do in a competition setting. We give them the tools, and they are set forever.

Dever also sees a considerable confidence level in the skaters.

They’re ready to branch out. There are friendships and bonding with other skaters, and there is just absolute joy in the skaters faces when they compete in our in-house competition for the first time, Dever said.

Dever would love to see more clubs add Compete USA to their programs.

It’s something every Learn to Skate program can incorporate into their program, Dever said. The kids want to stay in Learn to Skate longer, and you’re keeping your athletes.

Since the class began, their retention rate has doubled. Dever believes this program creates the opportunity to compete, learn and thrive while allowing skaters to be in the spotlight.

We just want to bring out their love of skating. That’s our ultimate goal. It’s just to help them find joy in their space. Because it is their space, Dever said.
