
This event was the 6th annual Chesapeake Bay Day on Capitol Hill for Choose Clean Water, a coalition of 239 nonprofit organizations focused on restoring and protecting clean water in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Despite the snow, the Coalition met with more than 20 members of Congress to discuss federal threats, like funding cuts to the Chesapeake Bay Program. Cutting the Bay program will alter water quality for the worse, putting at risk the animals that rely on balanced water – like the endangered dwarf wedge mussel. Coalition members also had the pleasure of hearing from 10 different members of Congress at the Chesapeake Bay luncheon, including Senator Van Hollen (D-MD), Congressman Faso (R-NY), Congressman Ruppersberger (D-MD), Congressman Wittman (R-VA) and others. The legislators spoke about life around the Chesapeake, where to find the best crab cakes, and of the future of clean water.


The Coalition for the Delaware River Watershed simultaneously scheduled meetings with the entire congressional delegation that represents the Delaware watershed. Although the snowstorm disrupted several meetings, the tenor of those that did take place was overwhelmingly positive with congressional members pledging to champion the Delaware on Capitol Hill. The result of Coalition’s two days on the Hill was a clear message to Members: fund the Delaware River Basin Conservation Act and its associated grant program the Delaware River Basin Restoration Program, a non-regulatory approach led by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
On March 23, the program received $5 million in funding as part of the fiscal year 2018 Omnibus spending bill approved by Congress. The Coalition for the Delaware River Watershed worked with Congress on the authorization of the Delaware River Basin Conservation Act in December 2016 that created the program, and through the newly funded program, money will finally begin flowing to local conservation projects throughout the region. The Delaware River Basin Restoration Program is critical to protecting many aquatic species, including the pollution sensitive and endangered shortnose sturgeon.

The result of months of collaboration and hard work paid off with the rejection by Congress of the president’s fiscal year 2018 budget proposal, which aimed to zero out the Chesapeake Bay Program. The spending bill that passed includes a fully funded Chesapeake Bay budget of $73 million and $5 million for the Delaware River. We owe a huge thank you to all of the members of Congress who voted in support of protecting the Chesapeake Bay and the Delaware River. The fight for clean water continues as the president’s proposed Fiscal Year 2019 budget has only $7.3 million allocated for the Chesapeake Bay and nothing for the Delaware River.
Thankfully, in some places, wildlife experts are helping all sorts of species cross the road in safe – and very clever – ways.

This win, along with the first anniversary of the 2014 Chesapeake Bay Agreement, make it a big month for wildlife like blue crabs that depend on healthy waters in the Chesapeake Bay. We urged regional leaders – Delaware Governor Markell, Maryland Governor Hogan, Pennsylvania Governor Wolf, Virginia Governor McAuliffe, New York Governor Cuomo, West Virginia Governor Tomlin, and DC Mayor Bowser – to attend this week’s critical Chesapeake Bay meeting and keep this important work for wildlife going strong.
While the news is good, we are still in need of more progress for wildlife and the Chesapeake Bay!
The National Wildlife Federation-hosted Choose Clean Water Coalition and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation recently released state-level report cards which highlight the places where Bay states are on-track, as well as off-track, on pollution reduction goals. Take a look to see how Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington, D.C. and West Virginia are doing on planting trees, creating steamside buffers and keeping farm run-off from flowing into the Bay.

2013 marked the 40th anniversary of the landmark Federal Endangered Species Act. The ESA was devised to protect plant and animal species from extinction. Species are put into two categories, “endangered” and “threatened.”
According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, as of May 2015, in the United States there are a total of 488 animal species and 728 plant species listed as endangered and 202 animal species and 158 plant species listed as threatened. The United States is home to a diverse array of wildlife that are so important to our culture and well-being. But many of these species will face a bleak future if we do not address climate change.
As temperatures continue to rise some species are at risk of running out of suitable habitat. The endangered Delmarva Peninsula fox squirrel, the largest variety of tree squirrel in North America, is at high risk from sea-level rise. Most of its current habitat lies along the coastline of the Chesapeake Bay, an area where sea level has been rising faster than elsewhere along the Atlantic coast. The squirrel relies on mature pine and hardwood forests to provide the food and habitat it needs. Past logging, development and farming have limited the habitat of the species and large losses of habitat could have a serious impact on it.
Rising sea levels threaten to inundate estuaries and coastal wetlands. Extreme weather such as super-storms and more severe droughts also impact wildlife. 2014 was the hottest year on record, and 13 of the 15 hottest years on record have occurred since 2000. Ducks, geese and other waterfowl across the country are changing behaviors and migration patterns.
We know that climate change is a major threat to wildlife. We need to prepare and cope with current and future climate impacts. We also need to take action to head off the worst impacts of climate change so that fewer species become endangered. The National Wildlife Federation and members of the Maryland Climate Coalition are working to do this by increasing the amount of clean, renewable energy Maryland uses and renewing Maryland’s Greenhouse Gas Reduction Plan.

On May 15th the National Wildlife Federation will celebrate Endangered Species Day, which highlights the importance of protecting endangered species. Help NWF celebrate Endangered Species Day by texting “WILD” to 25383 to donate $10 to protect wildlife.
It’s those eggs that are key for the red knot and other shorebirds. As the robin-sized red knot migrates, it visits its last stopover in New Jersey just in time to feast on fatty horseshoe crab eggs. By the time the birds depart, they will have doubled their body weight.
But when Superstorm Sandy slammed into the Cape May and the bayshores it put an exclamation point on the threat to the red knot. An aerial survey conducted two months after the storm revealed that Hurricane Sandy destroyed 70 percent of the state’s prime horseshoe crab habitat. The population declines were bad enough that late last year the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officially listed the rufa subspecies of the red knot as “threatened” under the Endangered Species Act. “Rufa” is the subspecies of red knot in America.

This year the coming of the red knot will herald another important event: the reintroduction of the Delaware River Basin Conservation Act (DRBCA). The DRBCA, reintroduced on Tuesday in the Congressman John Carney of Delaware in the House of Representatives and Senator Tom Carper of Delaware in the Senate creates a $5 million grant program that will help protect and restore the Delaware River Watershed and create a comprehensive planning framework that would increase cooperation among groups in the basin. All of that adds up to a better chance for the red knot.

Building a wildlife crossing is often an expensive, complex undertaking that requires expertise from wildlife biologists along with the coordination of a myriad of local, state and federal officials. Right now, in an initiative spearheaded by our California office and in partnership with wildlife experts and state transportation officials, we are working to create a wildlife overpass or tunnel across the 101 freeway in California that cuts through vital habitat for mountain lions and other wildlife. Help mountain lions safely cross roads that cut through their habitat by donating to create wildlife crossings and protect wildlife across the nation.
Polluted runoff is feeding these habitat destroying algal blooms—and much of the polluted runoff is coming from driveways, rooftops, parking lots and lawns. Water running off of hard surfaces is picking up motor oil and grease from cars, pet waste, weed killer and other pollutants and washing them into streams and rivers which flow into the Chesapeake.
In recent years, Virginia and Maryland have taken steps to help blue crabs and clean up the Bay. Maryland passed a polluted runoff law that funds on-the-ground projects to reduce pollution by replacing failing infrastructure, restoring or enhancing stormwater management systems, and creating buffers and green space to filter runoff. Money for the local programs comes from a fee on hard surfaces that produce polluted runoff. The more pollution a property produces, the more the property owner pays!
But right now these important solutions for reducing pollution and helping blue crabs recover are at risk in the Maryland State Senate. Lawmakers may eliminate the very programs designed to keep polluted runoff out of the waters where blue crabs live.
We’re calling on Maryland state senators to keep this effective law in place and prevent polluted runoff from washing into streams and rivers, and poisoning habitat for blue crab and other wildlife.
Let’s say you visit the same spot on the same ocean every year. You take a swim, and it feels pretty much like the last time. The temperature doesn’t seem all that different. You certainly can’t tell that the pH is changing.
Yet just as the global climate is changing, so too is the ocean’s chemistry. Alongside atmospheric climate change, ocean acidification is one of the most serious issues affecting the waters of our planet and all of its inhabitants.
Though the media has taken to calling ocean acidification our “new climate threat,” it is not a new problem. Since the dawn of the Industrial Revolution, carbon dioxide has been increasing in our atmosphere and therefore our seawater. Now, over 200 years later, we can no longer ignore the threat. Even conservative estimates suggest that by 2100, global ocean waters will warm by close to 2 degrees Fahrenheit on average and acidity will increase by 150 percent.
So what does this mean for ocean wildlife? Clearly, the sea’s complex food web will be disrupted. Highly mobile animals will be forced to expand their home ranges as they search for more hospitable waters. Sadly, coral reefs as we know them will be forever altered and could even disappear. Animals will struggle to build skeletons and shells in waters that literally dissolve them. And growth and reproductive capabilities of numerous marine animals will be at risk.
The National Aquarium’s location in the heart of the Chesapeake Bay watershed forces us to face the possibility of drastic changes to this iconic ecosystem that encompasses six states and the District of Columbia. According to NOAA’s Chesapeake Bay Office, the Bay is being affected at a faster rate than the global average because land in this region is already subsiding naturally. Bay temperatures have already increased almost 2 degrees Fahrenheit since 1960 and are projected to increase by an additional 3 to 10 degrees by 2100—a tremendous change that will have a profound effect on the nation’s largest estuary.
Increased acidification of the Bay will alter its delicate balance in other ways. For example, according to marine geologist Justin Ries of the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, blue crabs could grow larger, while the creatures they eat, including oysters and clams, could suffer from weaker, slower-growing shells. These bivalves, in addition to being an integral part of the food chain, also contribute to healthier water quality by filtering huge quantities of Bay water. The moral: damage one small species and you affect the entire Chesapeake Bay.
We cannot simply undo the impacts of ocean acidification. The carbon dioxide we are putting into the atmosphere today will continue to accumulate for decades. There is hope, however, and as always, it starts with each of us. Reducing our consumption of fossil fuels and minimizing our collective carbon footprint isn’t just the best way forward, it’s the only way. As Fyodor Dostoevsky said in The Brothers Karamazov, “For all is like an ocean. All flows and connects. Touch it in one place and it echoes at the other end of the world.”

There I was, a mosquito biologist on a hot summer day, knee deep in the mud of a mangrove swamp bordering the Indian River Lagoon, the long estuarine system along the Florida east-coast. I had given up trying to get a “biting count” (believe it or not, you actually try to count the number landing on you in one minute…an ‘index’ of misery!).
I had stood in this very spot two weeks before, and there were none, but shortly after that the tide had risen sharply, flooding the mangrove swamp and apparently hatching the myriad of saltmarsh mosquito eggs secreted in the mud. I had missed finding the larvae, a critical part of any control effort.
Frustrated, I jammed my dipper, the long-handled scoop which is the main tool of the mosquito larvae sleuth, into a small puddle. No larvae, of course, but four small fish darted frantically about in the dipper. Always interested in fish, I glanced at them and could not immediately identify them, so I placed them in a bucket.
Sometimes it is the smallest things that are life-changing: this simple act, placing the four little fish in a bucket, has led to over 25 years of research and insights into the remarkable life of a very unusual fish.
The “well known” part was due to a very unusual sex life: this is the only known vertebrate which is a selfing, simultaneous hermaphrodite—they “clone” themselves. Adult rivulus have a complex reproductive organ, and internally self-fertilized eggs are laid which hatch into exact genetic duplicates of the parent…with some exceptions, as you shall see. Oddly enough, pure male rivulus, which differ from the “herms” in having a bright orange/red tint, had been caught in the wild, but their function was unknown: sexual reproduction had been documented in the lab but never in the wild…but more on this later.
Covered with mosquito bites, I kept glancing in the bucket on the way back to my office that day. Once I got an ID on my fish, a few days later I was back in the mangrove swamp, peering at the small puddle where I had collected the fish. But this was no common puddle! I immediately recognized it as a water-filled land crab burrow. With a quantum leap in collecting technology, I plunged a small net into the murky depths of the burrow, and withdrew it with 5 more rivulus. A few more dips, and I had a total of 13. I was floored to realize that I had just collected more rivulus in one location than anyone ever had before.
After gently placing the fish back in the burrow, I left, wondering if this association was mere coincidence.
The great land crab (Cardisoma guanhumi) is a large blue crab found throughout the shorelines of the tropical Atlantic, but it is actually a terrestrial crab. It digs burrows in saltmarshes and mangroves and sometime inland for some distance. The burrows are dug to the depth of groundwater, typically about 2-3 ft. deep, and the crab uses the pool of water to moisten its gills.
I began to suspect that the “scarcity” of rivulus had more to do with “looking in all the wrong places.” I was right. I checked crab holes far and wide, in every saltmarsh and mangrove swamp where my job led me. In the ensuing years, I have collected several thousand rivulus, and not just in Florida: I have found them in Belize, and also in Honduras, the Bahamas and Cuba.
The relationship seems well established. So, in Florida at least, rivulus is not as rare as originally thought, but still rare enough to warrant designation by the state as a “Species of Special Concern” and collection is prohibited without a permit.
Early in my burrow-peering days, I found that sometimes rivulus would be out of the water, stuck to the side of the burrow, well above the water line. This behavior apparently offers the fish a means of avoiding poor quality water. During these aerial jaunts, the fish becomes torpid and respires through an extensive capillary network in the skin and fins.
My colleague Dr. Patricia Wright from the University of Guelph in Canada has been studying the physiology of emersion in her lab for years, and her findings are remarkable. My own lab study has shown that they can live at least two months out of the water in damp habitats: when re-flooded after 66 days, they were skinny, but eager to eat and devoured mosquito larvae immediately!
The adaptive value of emersion was dramatically revealed when I came upon a macabre scene inside a crab burrow where dozens of small minnows had been stranded by receding tides. Not as hardy as rivulus, the minnows began to die and rot, and I observed several rivulus emersed above and on the rafts of floating corpses, waiting for conditions to improve. A week later, when all trace of the dead fish was gone, only live rivulus were left in the burrow.
It turns out that rivulus will also occupy small, shallow pools at higher elevations in the mangroves. These pools flood and dry intermittently with higher tides or heavy rainfall. It is rare to find other fish species here, as they die when the pools dry. In Belize, my colleagues William P. Davis and Bruce J. Turner and I were puzzling over where the rivulus went when such pools dried. We had assumed that they would retreat to adjacent crab burrows or burrow into masses of mangrove leaf litter. It turns out that there were other housing options when your pool dries up.
Speaking of sex (were we?), I have already alluded to the mysterious presence of male fish in an hermaphroditic species. Why would nature find this necessary? We know that male fish regularly show up in laboratory colonies of rivulus, and rearing the developing eggs at lower temperatures (~ 20° C /68° F) produces a high percentage of males, but low temperatures are not a common phenomenon in the tropics. So, my colleagues and I were shocked in our initial collections in Belize to discover that fully 25 percent of the population was male, and this high ratio has now persisted for over two decades. A few stray males have shown up in Florida, and a couple from the Bahamas and Honduras, but something strange is going on in Belize, because there the fish is reproducing sexually.
Apparently, in the presence of these flashy males, the herms somehow suppress internal self-fertilization (a fascinating physiological problem in itself!) and lay unfertilized eggs, which are then fertilized externally by the males. Of course, in the murky confines of a crab burrow (not the most romantic of settings), this has never been observed, but geneticists can tell by looking at the DNA that ‘sex’ is happening here!
When some wild Belize fish produce self-fertilized eggs in captivity, the offspring are not genetically identical. This means that at some point in prior generations, sexual reproduction occurred. Cloning has taken a lesser role here. Why? We don’t know. And the real puzzler is why would you need sex in an animal that appears to be eminently successful without it? After all, if you are distributed from southern Brazil to central Florida and throughout the entire Caribbean and western tropical Atlantic, you must be doing something right. This extensive range does speak to the advantages of ‘waif dispersal’: it only takes a single individual to found a population.
As they say, much remains to be done, but I thank my lucky stars that I did not discard that dipper full of murky water on that fateful, mosquito-ridden day 25 years ago. I still stalk the mangroves and look for other miracles. And there are others out there, to be sure.

For males, the red hour glass marking on black widow spiders should be an indicator that their time is up. Ordinary gifts won’t do for the females of this species; these venomous femme fatales require the ultimate sacrifice. Black widows are notorious mate eaters, and they’re hardly alone. Female praying mantises, scorpions, midges and other spiders are also known to decapitate and gobble up their significant others.
Scientists have several theories about the motivation of mate eaters and their victims. Experts speculate that self-sacrifice may increase reproductive success for males by providing extra nutrition to the mother of their offspring. Other researchers suggest mate munching is just a case of mistaken identity. Also, killing members of the opposite sex may be a way of eliminating competition for food.
Some males in the mate-eating world, however, are quick enough and lucky enough to escape. However, ladies in the animal kingdom aren’t the only ones who take love bites too far. Male paddle crabs can flip the script and devour their mates, too.
A dozen roses doesn’t seem like too much to ask, especially in comparison to what some six and eight-legged females require. Sacrificing a little time this Valentine’s Day is much better than sacrificing your life.
