So much has changed over the years when it comes to health and wellness. It used to only be about eating “healthy” (which by definition seems to change every year) and working out, to becoming a movement and a way of life. It’s not just about eating a certain way and moving a certain way to look a certain way. It’s about living a certain way so you feel a certain way — and that certain way is GOOD.

I don’t want to be one of those people who’s like “a lot of you have been asking about…” because really, it’s only been a handful of people. But this is something I’ve been wanting to put together for a while so I figured…why put it off any longer?

My journey to wellness has been a long one. I used to hate exercising, I didn’t love cooking and I’d laugh at the thought of meditation. Just like how much has changed over the years with regards to health and wellness as a society, it’s changed with me as well.

Know that it’s a process. If you’re still struggling with this like I was, it takes time. I didn’t wake up one day and say I’M GOING TO TEACH MYSELF TO MEDITATE. And suddenly I’m going to yoga, drinking green juice and cooking 3 healthy meals everyday. No way. This was over FOUR YEARS in the making for me. So just keep that in mind.

The one request I got the most was about working out. I had mentioned this in a super old post but the second I changed my mentality about exercise is when I started to notice results. I finally stopped caring about working out to lose weight. My only motivation was to get stronger, both mentally and physically. I’ve never been very athletic so it’s a sense of personal pride when I can do certain things in a class (that I never thought I’d be able to do before!) Now I really enjoy exercising (never thought the day would come) but I definitely do not enjoy it in all forms (re: running, boot camp style classes where you’re being yelled at, etc.)

Currently I do group fitness classes 4-5 times a week through ClassPass. I used to only go to Studio Three (which I still love) but I had some knee issues last year which led me to some lower impact exercises like pilates and yoga. Right now my favorite studios in Chicago are The Space Between (the best yoga in the city, but I already told you that), CHI50 (the only Megaformer pilates I’ve ever actually liked), Studio Three (cycling, yoga and strength training all under one roof), Pilates Pro Works (the perfect pilates workout), and Free Mvmt Shop (music-focused, some dance-inspired workouts and overall great vibes).

And if you need some motivation to get to the gym, I think it always help to have some cute workout clothes you feel good in. One reason I used to hate working out was because I didn’t feel myself in gym clothes. Now that Athleisure has taken over the world, it’s actually all I wear now (in and outside of the gym). Hot tip: Shopbop is having a crazy good sale right now and they have a great activewear selection that will get you super pumped to get your sweat on (I linked some of my favorites at the bottom of this post). 20% off orders under $500 and 25% off orders over $500 with code EVENT19 at check out.

Now onto diet. I touched on this a bit last fall but I think it’s time to go into more detail. I’ve been going to Green Circle Wellness since last summer and it’s completely changed my life. I initially went because of these unresolved skin issues I developed in my early 20s (that no doctor or dermatologist could help me with). After doing some specialty tests, I learned I had low cortisol levels (which is why I was so tired all the time) as well as had a bad bacteria overgrowth in my gut (which is why I had digestive issues and bloating…also wasn’t helping my skin!) With the help of Green Circle’s great team, I switched up my diet to focus on meat, fruit and vegetables. This was an adjustment as I was never a big meat eater, but I had to eliminate so many things…I couldn’t just eat fruits and veggies! Previously I was eating a lot of vegetables (much in raw form), eggs and grains. Sounds healthy but it just wasn’t working for me. Because of my digestive issues, I have a hard time with legumes, nuts and grains. I was also eating a lot of salads (which are healthy, right?) But when you have digestive issues, raw foods are difficult to digest…therefore always leaving me bloated and sluggish. Who knew…from a salad??

So when I cook at home, I focus on organic / grass-fed meats as well as organic produce. I rarely eat dairy, gluten, grains, or legumes (but I’ve been trying to incorporate nuts back in because it’s something I like to snack on). Also keep in mind that this diet change is only at home. When I’m out, I eat (and drink) whatever I want. Because I still love pizza and cocktails 🙂 And it’s all about balance! The key is knowing what foods make you feel good and which ones don’t. Unfortunately these tend to change over the years (getting old is fun, isn’t it?) but it’s important to listen to your body.

When it comes to cooking at home, I swear by Bites By Mia. She’s local (yay!) and really has the best recipes that are easy, healthy and delicious. Sometimes I find recipes from other sites to have confusing or incomplete instructions…or the dish just doesn’t taste great. I have made most of Mia’s recipes at this point and I can assure you they’re all delicious and anyone can make them. Some personal favorites of mine — cashew chicken stir fry, grain-free stuffed peppers, vegan banana oat pancakes (I have an egg sensitivity so breakfast has been tough…and these are a lifesaver!), sweet and spicy salmon with this easy cucumber salad (I’ve never liked cooked salmon until I tried this recipe), and the honey mustard one pan meal (which I add avocado to for breakfast / lunch leftovers).

I also pin recipes I want to try / have tried so if you need more inspiration, you can follow me here.

For supplements, I was on a lot for a while when I first started going to Green Circle. I’ve just recently paired that down, as I don’t want to be popping pills like that when I’m only 30. The ones I swear by are probiotics, digestive enzymes, adaptogens and CBD. Probiotics are something I obviously need because of my gut issues. Having optimal gut health affects so many things, not just your digestion. It’s your skin, your immune system, your mood (to name a few) so probiotics are something I will always take. The digestive enzymes help me a ton, although took some getting used to as you have to take them with each meal. If you feel bloated and sluggish every time you eat, I highly recommend trying digestive enzymes. The adaptogens I started taking because of my low cortisol levels. They helped me tremendously with regards to energy. I was actually taking a night time blend (which is the opposite of what you want if you have low cortisol levels) so I was glad Green Circle showed me what’s up.

As far as CBD goes, I think it’s really gotten out of hand. 2019 will be the year there’s nothing we don’t put CBD in or on. However, I’ve been using it for sleep for almost two years now so I can’t knock it. It’s helped me sleep through the night and chilled me out overall. Although I no longer need it for sleep, I still take it at night for the anti-inflammatory benefits. I’ve tried several different brands and haven’t noticed much of a difference between them, so I’m still on the hunt for one I’m loyal to (if you have any suggestions, please leave in the comments!) I actually give CBD oil (but formulated for pets) to one of my dogs who has arthritis and I notice a difference in his energy levels within 30 minutes of giving it to him. Lastly, it’s not a necessity but just something I’ve taken where I noticed real results — HUM Nutrition Hair Sweet Hair. After finishing one bottle, my hair has never been softer and my nails were super strong. I never really believed in beauty gummies (because the Kardashians ruin everything) but these in particular have fantastic reviews…and now I know why. They really work!

Besides my love for Green Circle (by the way, none of this is sponsored!) I also get acupuncture once a month. If you’ve never tried it, I highly recommend it. As it helps with so many things! I think of it as a tune up. You can work on whatever your body needs that day. I’ve gone for muscle pain, a cold, anxiety, skin issues…acupuncture truly is a magical thing. I go to Giselle Wasfie at Remix in the West Loop. And not only is the acupuncture amazing, but Giselle has her own line of Chinese medicine based apothecary items that I’m obsessed with. I’ve been seeing Giselle pretty regularly for about 3 years now and I don’t see myself stopping any time soon!

Although a lengthy post, those are just the basics of my wellness routine. I like to sprinkle in other things here and there like an Infrared Sauna, a hike while traveling, or a relaxing soundbath…but these aren’t things I do on a regular basis. As I’m sure you know, I am not a doctor (but I could be if I had this Margiela Employee Lab Coat). I am by no means an expert. But I wanted to share with you what I’ve been doing, what’s been working and why. If this post can help just one person feel a little better then my work here is done!

So thank you for coming on my wellness journey with me today. If there’s anything here you’d like to discuss more, feel free to take it to the comments, email me or hit me up @chicityfashion.

With the end of winter sort-of near (yay!) we now have what I like to call a slightly-less-shitty winter (AKA spring) on the horizon. This is when we buckle down and just push through until patio season. Until then, here’s what’s getting me through the end of winter.

Let’s kick things off as we usually do…with some FASHION.

FASHION:

With fashion month still in full swing, I wanted to share some of my favorite looks for the Fall 2019 season. Whether they’re pieces I actually want to wear or just admire from a far, here’s what I’m feeling for FW19.

For Rodarte, the collection appeared to be an over-the-top garden party (technically the Mulleavy sisters were inspired by musicals from the 30s and 70s). This look in particular gives me some Studio54 vibes with a touch of Blossom (which is just really working for me here).

Sally LaPointe always kills it on the runway. It’s my ideal mix of wearable pieces while still being a touch aspirational. She does monochromatic oh-so-well, and as you can probably tell from my favorite fashion week looks…I’m a sucker for monochromatic. I’m now feeling inspired to rock head-to-toe mint as soon as the weather allows it…and I’m not mad at that purple lip paired with this pastel hue either!

Zadig & Voltaire clearly just gets me. All black with some Chicago love? SIGN. ME. UP.

But if you’re looking for clothes you can actually wear RIGHT NOW, look no further than the Shopbop sale. They’re doing their buy more, save more sale right now through March 2 (get anywhere from 15% to 25% off, depending on how much you spend). If you’re like me, you might find these sales a bit overwhelming. But don’t you worry…I linked some of my favorite spring things from the sale at the bottom of this post Use code GOBIG19 at checkout.

I know it’s probably too early to talk sandals but after discovering St. Agni, I couldn’t wait until it was actually sandal season. My friend turned me on to their Paris mules last summer and given how comfortable and easy they were, I became an instant fan. The one type of shoe I don’t ever think to buy are sandals. I always end up in sneakers (spring / summer) or boots (fall / winter) and really only ever wear sandals if I’m at a pool or beach. But St. Agni has officially changed my mind with their chic slides. I ended up getting a couple pairs of their sandals for my Hawaii trip last month and I am HOOKED.

BEAUTY:

A few years ago, I went super light with my hair (lighter than I’ve ever gone before) and after realizing my hair does not like being light, I toned it way down. The one thing that really helped my hair return to it’s healthy state (besides the help of my hair guru who I’ve been seeing for over six years now — Sarah at Salon 1800…she is amazing) was Olaplex No. 3. Of course Sarah is the one that introduced me to this miracle goop. Olaplex has salon-grade products that Sarah has used on me in the past, but this is their at-home treatment that literally strengthens your hair from within (you can read more about it here). I use it once a week and of any at-home hair treatment I’ve ever tried, this is the one I see best results with. And if you don’t believe me, check out the reviews on Sephora!

There are so many clean beauty brands out there now (which is great…glad everyone is getting on board with this) but how do you know what actually works? Some of these products are super pricey and do you want to take the risk and invest in a $150 serum? Or you grab something the grocery store and although there’s no harsh chemicals in the product, it doesn’t really give you any results. Why I love Fountain of Truth (Giuliana Rancic’s new skincare line) is that she found the sweet spot in clean beauty of being more luxe than something you’d buy at Whole Foods but not as expensive as Tata Harper or Goop. Plus, the products have gone through clinical testing…so you know they’re going to work. I actually tried these products over a year ago (when I was working with Giuliana on her clothing line). I didn’t even know what they were supposed to do (as they weren’t even in their official packaging yet) but all I knew is that my skin had never looked better. That has to say something, right?

FOOD:

Really, I’m a sucker for anything with hidden entrance…so you can imagine how I feel about Yokocho (tucked away in a Wicker Park alley). To make entering the space even more interesting, you open a door to another entryway (that leads you to Yokocho or Anaba Handroll Bar) and it’s full of little green lights projected from floor to ceiling. Then you finally walk into the space…and now it’s time to have some fun. The cocktails were on point, the food was good (it’s more of a drinks and apps place — not necessarily a full dinner meal) and the music was awesome. As much as I love food, I’m always down for some solid cocktails and good jams. So I’ll definitely be back, Yokocho!

Now that I’ve been cooking at home more, I’m constantly on the hunt for any interesting pantry staples that could spruce up my dishes. I’ve also been trying to bake more and I typically use honey or maple syrup as my sweetener. So when I came across this Bloom Tumeric-Infused Raw Honey on Thrive Market, I was intrigued. Is it the most versatile pantry item? No. But it’s so damn good, I don’t even care. Could I eat this straight? Yes. Do I? Sometimes. Mostly I add it to tea and I’ve been using it on my paleo pancakes (this recipe is my favorite). I’d like to use it in a savory situation so my next task is to make this honey mustard one pan meal (which I’ve made many times and is so delicious and easy) but with the tumeric honey. I’ll let you know how it goes 🙂

WELLNESS:

As much as I enjoy working out, there’s very few studios that have a beautiful space with great branding…but The Space Between nailed it on all levels. It’s in a lower level space in River North (not close to where I live but I am willing to travel for a good spot!) It just feels like a hidden gem when you get in there. The wallpaper in the front room is serious home goals (you really have to go see for yourself) and the yoga studio just has great vibes. If you’ve been to Aire Ancient Baths, the idea of this underground zen fortress is kind of what this reminds me of (but in a way smaller, more yogi form).

GIVING BACK:

For the last six years, I’ve been on the committee for one of PAWS Chicago‘s signature events — Animal Magnetism. This year I am very excited to be co-chairing…and I wanted to extend the invite to all of you! There’s of course food, drinks and dancing, but we’ll also have an illustrator (who will sketch you and your dog at the event…yes, you can bring your dog!), dog-friendly activities (dog spa anyone?), an amazing silent auction and adoptable pups from PAWS. The proceeds from the auction and the event help save the lives of so many homeless animals in Chicago and beyond (including my pups, who are PAWS alum!) If you’re free March 8, I hope to see you there.

Until next season, friends.

I hope you’re ready…because we’ve got a big week ahead. It’s time to put on your eating pants, stuff yourself to the brim then spend all of your money immediately after (isn’t that what the holidays are all about??)

I actually wasn’t planning on a gift guide this year (*gasp*) but I started coming across some pretty cool stuff while doing my own holiday shopping. And you know I can’t help myself but share with you when I find cool stuff! Hence, this super awesome ultimate 2018 holiday gift guide (puppy not included).

2018 holiday gift guide

Now this is no ordinary gift guide. Every single item on here is something I already own, am buying for someone this year, is on my wishlist this year (hint hint), or would gladly give or receive at any point in time. I’m not just throwing things on here to show you a gift guide. There’s some really great gifts out there just waiting for you to buy (or receive!) But I haven’t even mentioned the best part…EVERY ITEM HERE IS UNDER $200. Whether you’re looking for your mom, your boyfriend or even your dog, there is literally something here for everyone.

And if this isn’t enough, be sure to check out some of the sales and promotions going on this week.

Shopobop never fails with their buy more, save more sales. Get between 15% and 25% off (depending on how much you spend) now through 11/25 with code MORE18 at check out. Same goes for East Dane. I linked a bunch of items from both sites here, so don’t forget that code!

I also linked to Net-a-Porter (who has one of my favorite sales of the year), AHAlife (not only a go-to for unique gifts but they’re offering 20% off AND donating $5 per order to the California Fire Foundation with code KARMA), Nordstrom (whose Merry + Bright themed Pop-In@Nordstrom is killing it in the gift department this year) and more.

What do you have on your list this year??

Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving / Black Friday / Small Business Saturday / HOLIDAY SEASON!

It’s time to deflate your flamingo pool floats and stop posting Instagrams from your summer Greece trip…because it’s officially Fall. Whether you’re celebrating with a PSL in hand or wearing that cozy sweater you’ve been dying break out (which you’ll have several more months to wear), I thought it was the perfect time to share a few things I’ve been feeling so far this season.

fall_mood_board

Let’s kick things off with a little fashun, because…why not?

FASHION:

tibi faux fur

In Chicago, we have to wear some form of outerwear a majority of the year. Because of this, I always think it’s important to have a variety of coats and jackets (practical, warm, dressy, casual, fun / novelty, etc). Many times when I leave the house, I never even take my coat off. So why not have it be the star of the show? This season, I’m all about a colorful faux fur. Thankfully, Shopbop has an unreal selection right now (I linked some of my favorites at the bottom of this post, including this one by Tibi). Even better? They’re having a pretty sweet sale today through the 29th. Get 20% off orders under $500 and 25% off orders over $500 with code STOCKUP18 at checkout.

fall vibes

sally lapointe spring 2019

Coming from someone who’s pretty much just worn black and white the last few years, it’s a surprise to me that I’ve been so into brights…and for fall / winter! Although both of these runway looks are from the latest Spring 2019 shows (Tibi on top and Sally LaPointe underneath) I’m very much feeling orange / rust + hot pink for Fall. Now I have no plans on wearing these two things together, but I love the idea of a monochromatic rust OR fuchsia look.

BEAUTY:

VINTNER'S DAUGHTER

I LOVE skincare. Honestly sometimes more than fashion (shhh, don’t tell anyone). I actually look forward to my morning and night time routine. I truly enjoy taking care of my skin. Unfortunately, this obsession can get expensive. I very rarely splurge on a skincare item over $100 but I had to make an exception for Vintner’s Daughter. This is a product I’ve been wanting to try since they first launched, but I had a hard time justifying the price tag. After reading all of the amazing reviews, though, I finally pulled the trigger…and I’m sure glad I did. Yes, this is a pricey product…but it does the work of both a serum and moisturizer (so really it’s a two-for-one deal). I’ve noticed in the last year or so that I developed a few very fine lines on my forehead. I’m doing everything I can to avoid Botox for as long as possible (nothing against it…just not ready yet!) I’ve tried so many products and tools to see if anything would fill them in. And the only luck I’ve had is with this serum (plus my next obsession below). When you put Vintner’s Daughter on your face, it feels super luxurious and gives me the benefits I want (more even skintone, plump skin, a healthy glow, etc).

nurse jamie uplift tool

Can you tell I’m a sucker for what I see online?? 😄Between a crazy expensive serum and a less expensive (but not cheap) tool that I guarantee you’ve seen a celebrity promote on Instagram, yes…I am a full-on beauty junkie. But if I try something and I like it / see a noticeable difference, it’s all worth it to share with you! The Nurse Jamie Uplift Beauty Roller is no exception. I posted on Instagram Stories a few months ago to see if anyone had a better experience with the Nurse Jamie Roller over a jade roller or Gua Sha. I got mixed reviews so I decided to give it a go myself. I’ve been using my jade roller and Gua Sha (I alternate between the two each night) most of the summer. I noticed less puffiness (which is not a huge issue for me to begin with) with the jade roller and slightly firmer skin with the Gua Sha. Regardless of how either makes our skin look, they both feel great…especially for someone like me who’s a jaw clencher. But I wanted something that was more lifting and smoothing, which is why I went for the Nurse Jamie roller. I’ve only been using it about a week but I noticed the very slight sagging I have around my jaw line is lifted, and those pesky forehead lines are smoothed out. Granted, I’m pretty sure this is all a temporary fix but hey…it works!

tan drops

I’ve never been much of a self-tanner person. I’m lucky enough to be Greek and Italian so my body stays pretty tan throughout the year but my face does not. After wearing sunscreen on my face everyday for quite some time, the tan just doesn’t stay. I’ve always feared self-tanners though because I’m very scared of being orange (not to be confused with the orange monochromatic outfit I’m dying to wear from Tibi’s Spring collection). There’s been maybe two other self-tanners I’ve tried in my life (and they were fine but I couldn’t get past the smell!) I read about Tan Luxe’s Self Tan Drops earlier in the year (it was sold out when I first found out about it though) and I was very much intrigued by the idea — just adding a few drops to your moisturizer, serum or face oil. It seemed like a good way to control the amount of tan you’d like to achieve as well get an even look. I just add two drops to my Vintner’s Daughter and it is the perfect bronze…I don’t even need bronzer. Not orange, not streaky, no unpleasant smell. Tan Luxe really nailed the self-tanner (and if I don’t get a chance to catch some rays this winter, I’ll most definitely be getting the Body version).

FOOD:

paleo dinner

I’ve been making more of an effort to cook at home (as I go out to eat wayyy to much). Because of this, I’ve been on the hunt for some healthy recipe ideas that are delicious and don’t take very long to make. I found @bitesbymi on Instagram a few months ago on the discover / explore page (not even sure what it’s called anymore) and I’m sure glad I did. I like that she’s a dietician so I know her recipes are actually healthy (most of which are paleo, which I’m not, but I do try to cook that way at home — it’s just what makes me feel best). Some of my go-to recipes so far have been the turkey veggie skillet (which I add avocado to sometimes, and I haven’t tried yet but would be great with an over easy egg for breakfast), tomato basil turkey meatballs and egg roll in a bowl. I’m not much of a baker but I do have a sweet tooth so I’m definitely going to try making some of her desserts this fall.

WELLNESS:

green circle wellness

I’ve mentioned here before that I’ve had some skin issues in the last 6 or 7 years that I’ve seen several doctors, dermatologists and allergists about…and no one has been able to help me. I found Green Circle Wellness through a friend and it’s everything I’ve been looking for in a practice. I have a very holistic approach to things so I’m always looking for doctors who do as well. But I also don’t want to be treated like a number and appreciate individualized treatments. I haven’t been able to find this anywhere, until Green Circle Wellness. I’ve had a hunch this entire time with my skin that it’s internal. I’ve also had some digestive issues pretty much my whole life…but when you’ve had something that long, it feels pretty normal (and I didn’t even realize these were real issues until I went to Green Circle). Turns out they were both very much related. I did a bunch of speciality tests and learned I have an imbalance of bacteria in my gut, which was causing all sorts of issues (skin, digestive, my ability to absorb certain vitamins, etc.) I also learned I had low Cortisol levels, which explained why I was so tired all the time. Now that I’ve adjusted my diet accordingly and included supplements my body actually needs, I have never felt better. I don’t feel bloated anymore, I have more energy, and my skin issues seem to be resolved. I could go on about this kind of stuff (health / wellness) forever so I won’t bore you but if you’ve been through something similar and have any questions feel free to email me! I’d love to chat.

MUSIC:

jungle band

I discovered Jungle earlier in the summer and was immediately hooked. Their music is soulful and funky (just how I like it). They hadn’t had a new album since 2014 (which lead me listening to a lot of their songs on repeat). When I found out they were playing at Lollapalooza this year, I knew I had to do whatever I could to see them (even if it meant missing Bruno Mars…which I did, but it was totally worth it!) Jungle is hands down one of the best live shows I’ve ever seen. And thankfully, they came out with a new album a few weeks ago AND are coming to Chicago March 13 (best believe I’ll be there!)

Side note, if you’re looking for some new jams to listen to this season, check out my FW18 playlist on Spotify (will be updated throughout the rest of the season!)

HOME:

goop cb2

There is something about CB2 that makes me want to re-do my entire apartment. There’s few stores I walk into where my heart starts racing I’m so excited, CB2 is one of them (is that normal??) Although it’s not all my taste, I am loving the goop x CB2 collaboration. I’m also just a fan of goop (*guilty*) so I’m going to like most goopy things. I’ve been digging boucle furniture lately so when I saw these chairs, I was very happy. I have absolutely nowhere to put them but I can appreciate them from afar. That couch is pretty amazing too. But it’s actually the smaller items I’m especially into…like the glassware and bowls (super simple but added a little extra something with the exaggerated rim) as well as the match striker. Who knew I needed a match striker?! Thanks Gwyneth.

OTHER:

sneaker cleaner

It might seem a little crazy to be loving a shoe cleaner but hear me out. I’m not great at keeping my shoes clean, I admit. My boyfriend, however, always has fresh looking sneakers. It never really mattered to me until he cleaned a pair of my shoes once and I was like whoa…this makes a huge difference. He uses the Jason Markk shoe cleaner, so I got myself a bottle with the brush and went to town. After I got it, I cleaned all of my sneakers (and a few other shoes — but most of my boots are in storage until it gets a little colder — that’s my next project). It felt so satisfying. But I wanted to take it one step further and take a more preventive approach. So I got the Repel Spray as well and sprayed them all. It’s great because you can use both products on just about any material. I’m not sure how clean I’ll be able to keep everything once there’s a foot of snow on the ground but it feels good to take a step in the right direction. I love shoes (more than clothes, bags, jewelry, etc) so I might as well keep them in a good shape, right?

What do you think of these fall vibes? Anything you’re using / doing / going to try?

Since I started exercising (can’t believe it’s been almost four years!) , a lot has changed — I’ve switched up my work out routine, the clothes got way cuter (thank goodness!), and as of more recently (thanks to Nike), I finally started paying attention to the type of clothing / shoes I’m wearing for different work outs. It started with the shoes but now I’m all about the bra. Cue the Nike Brahaus.

Each week leading up to the Chicago Marathon, Nike is hosting week-long pop up activations at their Just Do it HQ (at 673 N. Michigan Ave, next to Nike). This past week was the Brahaus (fun name, right??) that was obviously all about the sports bra.

Like I mentioned, in the past I’ve worn whatever shoes or work out clothes that were decent enough to wear in public. Since being part of Nike’s Air Society this summer, I learned how much of a difference it makes to wear running shoes when you’re running, training tights when you’re training, etc. And last week at the Brahaus was no exception. They had staff on hand to help you find the right bra to support your style with professional fittings (which I was all about, see below!) But my favorite part was that you had the opportunity to customize the bras with a ton of different logo and embroidery options (which is something you’ll be able to do at the Just Do It HQ, with a variety of Nike merch, now through the Chicago Marathon).

I also got to meet Nicole Rendone, who’s the design director of bras at Nike. She really changed the way I now think about sports bras. Like with shoes and the rest of my work out looks, I always just threw on any sports bra and never paid attention to their purpose (running, training, lifestyle, etc). Now I’m a little more strategic when getting dressed for a work out.

I’ve already showed you different ways to wear the new Air Max’s so now I wanted to take on the challenge of fun ways to wear a sports bra (to the gym and beyond!)

I very rarely rock just a sports bra at the gym (as I have a lot of cute Nike tops to wear over them!) but this one in particular has changed my mind. I also typically only wear black sports bras so this was a departure for me. THIS is going to be the one that encourages me to go shirtless at my next work out 😉

I am a sucker for sweatpants (especially these Nike x Sacai ones — which you’ve seen before!) so I had to incorporate them into one of the outfits. It’s a good lounging around look but adding that blue bomber gives it another layer that makes it more appropriate to leave the house in.

The new bras have some major back appeal, and this one is no exception. I’m not sure I’d wear this exact outfit to the gym (as I prefer to work out in leggings, not shorts) but I’m thinking it would make for a good festival look next summer (stylish and practical!)

I’m actually wearing this exact bra as I write this (been wearing it all day — to work out and for some appointments / errands after) and I am obsessed (again, how great is that back??)

Which of these sports bras is your favorite? Would you rock one outside of the gym?

Be sure to check out the other events going at the Just Do It HQ this month!

After a few weeks of it officially being spring…it finally feels like it! Spring vibes didn’t feel right when there was snow on the ground (which was only a few days ago…cool, Chicago) but with today being the first day of 2018 I didn’t wear a coat, spring vibes feels RIGHT.

Let’s kick things off with a little beauty, shall we?

BEAUTY:

 photo castor oil.jpg

There’s something about having long lashes that just makes you feel like you don’t need to wear any makeup at all. It’s weirdly liberating, right? Anyone who’s used a lash growth serum that really works or has had lash extensions, you get it. Now I’ve raved about Revitalash before (and I still love it) but I do try to  be as mindful as I can about chemicals in my life (food, skincare, makeup, cleaning products, etc.) and if I can find a more natural solution, I’m going for it. I started using Castor Oil a few months ago and although it took a little longer than it’s not-so-natural counterparts to work, IT WORKS. You use it just like any other lash growth serum — just brush a small amount along your lash line. Not only is it the more natural solution but a way more affordable option (under $20!)

FASHION:

There are certain fashion things I’ve never been into yet I find myself being VERY into them lately. One is wearing red. Never did it. Now I’m obsessed. The next? Silk scarves. Never vibed with them but decided SS18 was going to be my big silk scarf debut. I just wanted a small one to wear around my neck, as a headband or on a handbag. I love this Gucci silk scarf because it has a different print on each side, so you can a little mixed print action no matter how you wear it!

Another thing I never liked (at least not since I was in high school)? Big earrings. They just never really felt like me. I’m very much a dainty jewelry kind of girl. And although I still feel that way about most earrings — Laura Lombardi has officially changed my mind with these hoops. I wore them the other night with just a sweatshirt and jeans and I was FEELIN’ it (Laz too!)

 photo 270.jpg

I’m sure you can tell from my blog / Instagram / life that I am obsessed addicted to the Nike Air Max 270s. Although this was #spon, this is not. I just need you to know how truly obsessed I am 🙂 There’s so many great colors (linked to a few at the bottom of this post) and they are so damn comfortable. Now that there’s no snow on the ground, I CAN WEAR THEM EVERY DAY 🙌.

Definitely a lot of fashion vibes this season (this is ChiCityFASHION after all). So last but not least…one of my favorite discoveries while in Australia last month — Nobody Denim. I am very particular about my denim because very few styles fit me right and are comfortable, but thankfully somebody / Nobody (get it?) is doing it right. I have been wearing the Frankie jeans nonstop (with my 270s of course)…which you definitely knew if you watch my Insta Stories.

To make things more exciting, Shopbop now carries Nobody Denim AND they’re having a great sale now  through the 14th — 20% off orders under $500 and 25% off orders over $500 with code EVENT18 (includes full price and sale items!) 💃

MUSIC:

 photo brasstracks.png

Been discovering a lot of great music lately (be sure to follow me on Spotify and check out my latest playlists — I’m typically making a new one every other month. SS18 is coming along quite nicely! 😎) Right now I cannot get enough of Brasstracks . It’s to the point where I’m 100% positive they’ll be in my top five most played artists on Spotify at the end of the year (you heard it here first). If you’re not familiar, they’re two super cool Brooklyn dudes — one DJs and plays the trumpet and the other plays the drums. Their music just gives me all the feels. I saw them last month at Lincoln Hall and I’m still not over it (don’t think I ever will be). Give them a listen. You won’t regret it.

Something I hope to see Brasstracks do one day, I cant stop watching Colors. Each video is a different artist performing in front of a solid color (the hues they choose are always on point…I decided my ideal job would be the person who pairs the artist and the color. Seriously, where do I submit my resume?) I’ve discovered some great music on there (including Sofi Tukker, who I now love and am seeing next month!) Warning: once you start watching you won’t be able to stop! Other recommendations: Saba. Masego. Goldlink. Aminé.

FOOD:

 photo lonesomerose.jpg

I go out to eat way more often than I should. And if you need me, I’ll likely be at Lonesome Rose (breakfast, lunch and / or dinner…and drinks, of course!) They have delicious tacos, queso, nachos, cocktails (so if you’re on a diet, I don’t recommend coming here) plus a super cute interior. I can’t get enough of this place!

READS:

I’m going to be completely honest with you, I’ve never been much of a reader. Often embarrassed when I’d respond to “what are you reading right now?” with “Vogue.com” I decided I’m going to give reading a go. And hey…it’s pretty cool! I just finished Creativity Inc (no, not the first book I’ve read as an adult…the third  😝). It’s by Pixar President Ed Catmull and although it’s not necessarily the point of the book, it gave me a whole new appreciation for Pixar movies. I always liked them but when he describes the movies they created and what really goes into making those films happen, it’s truly fascinating. Besides how Pixar movies are made, you learn a lot about corporate culture, fostering creativity and effective practices in the workplace. It doesn’t sound exciting but it’s more about the psychology behind it all. And that’s what I loved. And if you don’t believe me, believe the New York Times (it is a best seller!)

That’s all for this season, friends. Be sure to let me know what your vibing this spring in the comments!

Being a freelancer / working from home, you’d think I’m just on my computer in my pajamas all day, right? Well, you’re not totally wrong BUT it does give me the flexibility to be out and about (which I am quite often). Whether I’m running errands, heading to a meeting, or going out for the night, there’s a 90% chance I’ll be in sneakers (and as of late, the Nike Air Max 270s).

There’s also an 85% chance I’ll be in some other Nike gear as I have fully adopted Athleisure. It’s not a trend..it’s actually my life. If you’ve been following me since the beginning (or at least for a while now) I’m sure you’ve seen how much my style has changed. I almost always wore heels, I wouldn’t be caught dead in athletic clothes outside the gym…and look at me now!

 photo nike5.jpg

I’m grateful for brands like Nike making athletic clothes actually stylish, so I can be super comfortable, look cute, go to the gym, not go to the gym…wherever life takes me, it’s now taking me in my 270s 😊

 photo sixcorners3.jpg

With Air Max Day coming up (3/26!) I wanted to share a sort of day in the life / some of my favorite spots around Chicago wearing my new favorite kicks.

Nike took a little bit of DNA from multiple iconic Air Max silhouettes and remixed them to make the 270 pop in a modern and fun way. Pulling from the Air Max 180 and Air Max 93 specifically, these are the first Air Max’s that are strictly lifestyle (meaning not meant to be worked out in, but still designed with performance in mind…I’ve already walked miles in mine). And with the heel being its highest ever, it wouldn’t make much sense to run a marathon in them anyway (but with how comfortable these are, I may just consider it!) It’s funny that I absolutely hated that wedge sneaker trend a while back (sorry Isabel Marant), yet I can’t get enough of the 270s. Leave it to Nike to make a sneaker with height look badass.

 photo aire2.jpg

I spend most days in a leggings + sweatshirt + sneakers combo. If I’m not at home during the day, I’m typically running errands, walking my dogs and / or working out. I’ve learned to really value wellness and self-care as of late (it takes more than just exercising a few days a week!) I enjoy meditating or trying a new “healthy activity.” My current fave (as you know from Winter Vibes) is Aire (pun not intended 😄). I WISH being submerged in those pools was something I did on the daily but it’s something I love and brings me a whole new level of relaxation. It’s important to unwind every once in a while and this is the perfect place to do it.

 photo aire4.jpg

I couldn’t help but include a little Jim Bachor in here. He’s known for his “pothole art” (who knew a pothole could be so…ramen?) The fact that he has a piece in the Nike store on Michigan Avenue and I just can’t help but smile (and take a shoefie) every time I see one of his mosaics…this just had to happen.

Once I get out of my leggings, I’ll likely just switch to jeans (still in a  sweatshirt though…always 😝). I often take meetings at coffee shops and although I’d more likely be at Caffe Streets, I do love Metric roasters on Fulton (same owners, same great coffee!)

 photo metric2.jpg

I am a coffee snob and I’m not going to apologize for it. BUT both locations do a mean iced matcha latte with oat milk. I never order milky drinks (whether it’s dairy or non-dairy milk — I just prefer coffee and tea straight up) but this is one of my very few exceptions. It’s a nice little tasty caffeinated treat!

 photo metric8.jpg

 photo metric5.jpg

Same outfit. Different outing. I’m not messing around when I say I live in a versatile wardrobe — because I’m taking this exact outfit to get my groove on.

 photo concord1.jpg

I love seeing live music (Concord, Metro, Lincoln Hall, you name it) and the last few shows I’ve been to, I’ve worn this exact outfit (minus the jacket…needed a heavier coat IRL, unfortunately). Let me tell you from experience…the 270s make a great dancing shoe 💃.

 photo concord3.jpg

This last look was a little different for me. I’m always in jeans or leggings — a sneaker’s best friend. When I wear culottes, however, I usually go for loafers or heels. So I decided that I’m no longer going to wear anything unless I can wear my 270s with it (and I do love these pants) so I made them happen with a leather jacket, bodysuit and of course, some Air Max’s.

 photo jc4.jpg

I have to say, I’m pretty happy with the results (if I do say so myself). The JC Rivera definitely doesn’t hurt the situation either!

 photo jc5.jpg

But of course the day isn’t over without some EATS.

 photo lonesomerose3.jpg

Lonesome Rose is my new favorite spot (brunch, drinks, dinner, chill, repeat). It’s super cute on the inside and the food is awesome. The tacos, the corn, the nachos, the queso, the cocktails (!!) Let’s just say I could use a leisurely stroll in my 270s every time I leave there (which I will surely do come summer!)

 photo lonesomerose10.jpg

And there you have it –a few of my favorite things in Chicago wearing one of my favorite brands. You can say it’s a good day!

 photo lonesomerose7.jpg

Which color combo is your favorite? I’ve been wearing the black and pink the most but they’re all so damn good. There’s a ton more on Nike.com (for both men and women…these really look good on everyone!) so get your self a pair just in time for the global celebration of Air Max Day on March 26!

And heads up…starting Thursday (3/22) Nike Chicago will drop all new Air Max 270 styles, as well as Pogo (a dope new boutique in Lincoln Park, also seen here) and the NordstromxNike boutique. So, next time I see you, I hope to see you in some 270s!

Also let me know if it’s insane to own one shoe in four colors because these just might have to happen too (maybe five because these… #sendhelp #sendnike).

A few months ago I went to dinner with some friends and I was wearing pretty much this exact outfit (just a different cropped red sweatshirt, naturally). One friend sarcastically goes, “oh you couldn’t dress up for us?” I thought it was hilarious, as I’ve only been wearing sweatshirts (and sweatpants) this winter. But anything can be elevated with the right shoes (both literally and figuratively — re: heels).

radarte

I’ve always loved sweatshirts. Even as I kid, my go-to look was a sweatshirt and jeans (and a low ponytail…in case you’re curious about one’s 6-year-old beauty look). Not much has changed (although my jeans no longer have an elastic waist…sometimes I wish they did).

winter style

Going back to taking outfits to another level — I got this sweatshirt for Christmas and have already worn it it a ton (remember when I told you I never wore red? Look at me now!) The first time I wore it, I paired it with my favorite Khaite mom jeans and white Common Projects. All I needed was some over plucked eyebrows and you would’ve thought I came right out of the early 90s (a compliment I am giving myself). But if I’m only going to wear sweatshirts this winter, I have to find other ways to wear them. That’s where these boots come in.

I couldn’t tell you the last time I wore ALDO shoes before now, but I’ve had these since the Fall and I wear them almost every time I go out. The patent makes them easy to clean, they were cheap so if they get beat up I won’t cry about it and they’re super comfortable. What more could you ask for?

And adding a few extras for warmth — the heaviest coat I own (literally is a workout just to take it on and off), a beanie and scarf — I have to say I am feeling pretty RAD(arte).

I say, GO FOR IT!

It’s cold. You may have gained a few lbs over the holidays (honestly, who hasn’t? We need the extra warmth to survive Chicago winters anyway!) And who doesn’t love being comfortable? All I’ve been wearing are sweatsuits and I’m not going to apologize. I love a good head-to-toe look and this is the most comfy way to do it. Now, as much as I love making sweatpants part of an outfit, I don’t recommend wearing your actual pajama bottoms with your sorority sweatshirt from ten years ago and leaving the house (it may have flown in college but thankfully those days are behind us). For styling, shoes are key. I do prefer a higher shoe (heels / boots) but sneakers can work too (as long as they’re fresh!) So if you’re freezing your ass off, and want to just be comfortable…I have a few ideas for you!

If wearing sweatpants is public is new for you, then we can step into trying new things together! I’ve never worn the color red. Sounds crazy but I was just never a fan. It was even a stretch for me to start wearing red lipstick (and now, of course, I love it). As you can see, I’ve officially changed my mind about the bold hue. I wanted to really go for it with a monochromatic look. I guess it’s safe to say this isn’t the last time you’ll see me in red!

Coat: Assembly. Top: Cotton Citizen. Pants: Assembly. Shoes: Common Projects.

When I wear sweatpants out, I typically go for slimmer styles that taper at the ankle. As you can see by the Assembly sweats and these Kith sweats, I’m definitely stepping outside my comfort zone here. Because there’s nothing feminine about these pants, I paired them with a sheer bodysuit and some heeled boots. I actually have the matching sweatshirt to these pants but that’s one sweatsuit I’m keeping for indoors only 🙂

Pants: Kith. Bodysuit: Kith. Jacket: Bassike. Boots: 3.1 Phillip Lim.

And last, but certainly not least, my personal favorite — the sweatsuit. I went a little crazy when Adidas Originals opened in Wicker Park (let’s just say, this isn’t the only sweatsuit I bought that day). Not only do I love sweatsuits but I’m also all about the single brand look (as you can tell from this post). Sweatsuits are like jumpsuits — it’s one and done. No need to fuss trying to figure out if this shirt goes with those pants. PLUS, you can separate the pieces for totally different looks. It’s a win-win!

All Adidas Originals + Proenza Schouler pumps.

Will you be rocking your sweatpants in public this winter?

Now that it’s officially Winter (thanks to that fun drop last week from 60 to 30 degrees…you’re too funny, Chicago), it’s time to get in that cold weather (and holiday!) spirit. But where to begin? Well here’s what I’m feeling this season.

FASHION:

What better way to solidify your friendship than with some Dior friendship bracelets? They come in sets of two so it’s really the perfect gift for you / your bestie this holiday season 🙂

Everything I love captured in one photo — my pups getting festive for the holidays + my G by Giuliana gold puffer. I never knew how much I could love a puffer before this one. Typically they’re boring and bulky, but this one will not make you look like the Michelin man…and I promise the compliments will keep on coming.

Pretty much everything I wear on a regular basis can be found at POGO — a new “Athleisure boutique” (if you will) that just opened in Lincoln Park. Not only is it Instagram worthy (anything with white marble, right?) but their merch is ?. Nike, Adidas Originals, Comme, Public School…they have it all.

I can always count on Net-a-Porter to help me discover new brands / designers. And my latest discovery? Sansoeurs — THE definition of ear goals (even made TWO appearances on my holiday wishlist this year…so hopefully it will make an appearance on my ears post 12/25 ?).

BEAUTY:

I’m all for natural beauty products and it really doesn’t get more pure than Scratch Goods — food grade ingredients all for your skin to (literally) eat up. Not only do I love their products (their body oil is really saving me this winter), their mask bar at their West Loop location is such a fun thing to do with girlfriends (PLUS it’s actually effective). I’ve been struggling with skin issues for about 5 years now. I’ve tried almost everything (organic, prescription, DIY, you name it, I’ve done it) and the only thing that has cleared my skin has been this mask bar! You get to choose from three of their mask bases (pictured above) and three liquids they’re always changing up (like Dark Matter coffee or a juice concoction).  You can mix them all or just a few…totally up to you. I don’t know if it’s the mask itself or that combined with the pre and post prep with all the Scratch Goods products, but my skin has never looked better since I’ve gone to the mask bar. Now I just bought the Charcoal Mask (which is what I have mainly used for my masking at Scratch Goods) so fingers crossed this is the answer to my skin problems!

Not sure why, as someone with naturally frizzy hair, it has taken me so long to try a smoothing shampoo / conditioner…but hey, better late than never right? I typically go for hydrating products but my hair would still be frizzy. A few months ago I started using R+Co’s Bel Air Smoothing Shampoo & Conditioner and I haven’t had to deal with frizz since (even tested it out in some humidity while traveling!) I couldn’t believe it. I also use the High Dive Moisture + Shine Creme which makes my hair super soft. The combination of those three products and I’ve never been happier with the look and texture of my hair (finally ?).

WELLNESS:

I’ve been working out at Studio Three for almost a year now (cycling, interval training and yoga in one building — what more do you need?) and as much as I love all their classes, my new favorite is 3×3. What I love about this class is that it works every muscle group (without taking a toll on your body) AND you do it in 40 minutes. It’s 3 upper body, 3 lower body and 3 core exercises you do 3 times (hence 3×3) and you’re done before you know it. I’m all about efficiency so this is really my ideal workout!

If I could pick a #1 for this post it would be Aire Ancient Baths. I’m all for unique experiences and this was honestly one of the coolest things I’ve ever done. The company started in Spain with this idea of an ancient bathhouse. They’re now all over the world and just expanded to the US with locations in New York and Chicago! The standard “thermal bath” gets you access to all their baths (which are more like small pools) at various temperatures. My two favorites were the salt bath (which has as much salt as the Dead Sea, so you just float) as well as the indoor / outdoor where you literally can swim outside to this beautiful waterfall. I was skeptical of that one as I get cold very easily but as long as you stay in the water (which is nice and toasty) you’re golden (and I did this in 20 degree weather). They also offer massages and signature experiences like a Wine Bath (which I am dying to try) and Himalayan salt exfoliation to name a few. All I can say is that words don’t do it justice — you just need to check it out for yourself! It’s fun to do with a friend or a group, on a date, or you can even rent it out for a party / special event. Basically I want to live there so if you ever need someone to go with, I am always in!

FOOD:

I go out to eat way more than is healthy or financially responsible for any one person BUT that means I get to test everything out and share all those that are worth while…with you! Hands down the best restaurant I’ve eaten at in 2017 is Proxi. It really just has everything going for it — stunning interior, fantastic cocktails (their take on a Negroni, called Europeans in the Tropics, with a coffee ice cube is one of the best cocktails I’ve ever had) and ridiculously tasty food. My favorite dish has to be the Tempura Elotes (pictured above). It’s like a combination of Elotes and waffle fries. How could you not be sold? Other star dishes: Shaved Zucchini, Raw Tuna and the Grilled Chicken.

MUSIC:

Wonder what I’ve been listening to all year? Here’s 5 hours and 44 minutes of my most played songs of 2017.

Looking forward to some 2018 vibes, but in the mean time…
