Free play

Here’s a nice surprise, Activision’s latest Call of Duty title has some free content. And this time, you don’t even need a copy of the game to play it. Blackout, the CoD franchise’s first ever battle royale mode, is free to play through the 30th, with no strings attached. Actually, it kind of has negative amounts of strings. Any progression you log while playing will even carry over to the full game, if you buy in.

As for what’s playable in the mode, it’s not bad at all. You get “the original Blackout map that brings together characters, locations, weapons and gear from across the series, all in the biggest map in franchise history”. But that’s not all, as you’ll also get to play in the new Alcatraz map. That one’s just made available as of this week on the PS4, with other platform’s versions yet to come.

Who you’ll be playing against isn’t limited during the free window either. Activision says that those taking advantage of the free play will be “matchmade with all Blackout players, and be able to play in solos, duos and quads.”

With no price attached, there’s kind of no excuse now. If you’re into multiplayer shooters in any way, you’ll want to download Blackout Free Access on your PS4, Xbox One, or PC.

It’s a Blackout

Blackout drops players into a last-player-standing experience that is uniquely Black Ops. A true celebration of the series, Blackout features fan-favorite characters, weapons and iconic parts of classic maps, all in the largest map in franchise history complete with land, sea and air vehicles.

So what do you think? I’m not much for “battle royale”, or multiplayer at all really, but Blackout does seem pretty cool. It’s kind of like a new school take on the old school deathmatch, just on a massive scale. I don’t think there’s another semi-realistic game out there that features the mode either, with all the ones I can recall being pretty cartoony. So there’s that too.

There’s also a Private Beta coming up for those who would like to try before they buy. That’s set to hit on the 10th, which is this Monday. As usual with these kinds of things, the Beta will be used to provide feedback to Activision and developer Treyarch.

But how d0 you get into the Beta? Well, did you participate in the multiplayer beta? If you did, then you will be able to get into this. From the sounds of things though, that’s the only way to play this time. Not that you’ll have to wait all that long to play the actual game.

That’s set to arrive on consoles and the PC, via Battle.net, on October 12th.

Yes, it’s Blackout time. Well, almost. It will be on September 10th. That’s when fans of the long-running Activision series will get their first look at the game’s version of a Battle Royale. That’s right, Call of Duty is getting a PUBG/Fortnight style multiplayer mode.

The mode will feature the biggest map ever made for CoD multiplayer. It’s so massive that it’ll actually showcase areas made to resemble some parts of the most iconic CoD maps. Not only that, but it’ll also be bringing some elements of past games back, like fan favorite characters and weaponry.

Black Ops 4 is all multiplayer, with no campaign to play through, so it kind of has to have as much content as possible. This new mode should make some fans looking for as much as possible pretty happy. Remember though, this beta is a private one, so not everyone can play.

You’ll have to have the game pre-ordered in some form in order to get an invite. The good news of course, is that you have plenty of time before September 10th to get that deed done. So Ilf you do have your heart set on the Blackout beta, well you better make sure you get that pre-order in.

As for the full game, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 hits consoles and the PC on October 12th.

Deep black

What’s to say about that? Insane amounts of ridiculously fast gunplay, robots, dogs, and of course – explosions. Looks like Call of Duty alright, and this fourth version of Black Ops looks like the most over the top yet.

Of course, it’s also 100% multiplayer-focused. You probably know already, but this year’s CoD has no single player campaign. It’s all multi, and of course a zombies mode that’s sure to be even more impressive than the last.

If you can’t wait to dive in, then you’ll be happy to know that Activision has the beta right around the corner. The multiplayer beta for the game hits for the PS4 in just two days, on August 4th. As for other versions of it, those will arrive on respective platforms starting on the 10th. So it’s not much of a wait either way, and you’re sure to round out your summer with a (flash) bang.

As you can see too from that trailer, there’s a sneak peek at the game’s “Blackout” mode on the way too. That one won’t be available till next month though… yes, that’s right, September is next month already. Say “hi” to the Holiday gaming season.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is certainly a part of that, with the game arriving this October for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Wow does this look cool. Yeah, I know that’s kind of a blanket statement there, but it’s the first thing that popped into my head when I read through the preview strip (below) for Dark Horse’s Blackout.

There’s action, there’s teleporting, there’s weird talk of mysterious dimensional shifting and of course- giant robots. Who doesn’t like giant robots?! Even with just a few pages of preview, Blackout made an impact on me and pretty much instantly made me an even bigger fan of what Dark Horse Comics is doing with their superheroes and Project Black Sky.

This is some unique stuff that definitely feels different than what’s coming out of the big two. Not that the more mainstream and established stuff is bad at all (I’m a big fan of a good portion of it), but much like the revamped Valiant, Dark Horse has it’s own vibe going with these books. It feels from the promo that Blackout will fit in nicely with the likes of X and Captain Midnight and others- and that’s avery good thing indeed.

Look for Blackout to warp onto shelves on March 26th from the team of Frank Barbiere, Randy Stradley, Colin Lorimer and Doug Wheatley.
