This is just one of the reasons I support the National Wildlife Federation. Protecting and conserving threatened and endangered species, the most imperiled of species, is core to their mission, as is the conservation of what are sometimes considered “common species.” Though truly, there is nothing “common” about any wild creature.
I have a list of imperiled wildlife in Florida that I yearn to glimpse or hear in their native habitat. I want to experience them far from the houses, roads, and strip malls of suburban Florida. I want to hear and see them deep in the true wild, along the backroads, backwaters, and backwoods of wild Florida.
I was struck recently by the realization that one day we may look for birds in the air, the denizens of the swamp or pines, or the creatures of the ocean and they will be gone. Many of the species that we hold dear will have disappeared into the night of extinction from which there is no dawn.
What if the music they provide, the yips and howls, the calls and whistles, the mighty roars, the true music of nature, was to disappear? And what have we already lost in terms of this natural music, all the notes and calls of extinct species?
When I am lucky enough to hear the ancient trumpet call of sandhill cranes, I wonder what it must have been like to hear a cacophony of whooping cranes calling across a wet prairie as dawn emerged in days past in Florida—figures shrouded in the mist of morning, calling out as they had for centuries. That music is mostly silent now. We are all poorer for it.
Generations that came before us in Florida, now long since passed, may have heard the yips and howls of red wolves in the night. Wolves in Florida, and across the American South! What an incredible primal experience it must have been to hear them calling to a full moon. That loss is ours to bear.
When I was young, we lived on the banks of the Withlacoochee River, across the river from the Withlacoochee State Forest. This was the 1970s, and wild Florida was still strong. One night, as we gathered around a campfire, we heard a piercing, terrifying scream from across the river. I still remember all the hairs standing up on my neck.
Our neighbor on the river was born and bred along the river in a small town of fishermen and river folk. When the screams faded, he simply turned to us, and in a voice as deep as rich cane syrup, drawled, “panther.” I will never forget that moment. I have not heard one since, but hope I still may one day. Groups like NWF are working to ensure they do not go quietly into the night of extinction.

I offer this confession knowing that serious practitioners of biology and ornithology may snicker at my confessed naivete. The true and abiding sound of nature that I yearn to hear in wild Florida is the call of an Ivory-billed woodpecker, a species that is likely to be extinct. The conservation biologist in me knows what extirpation and extinction mean in a policy sense, but the dreamer in me still holds out a slim tendril of hope. Perhaps we can dream them back to us.
When I drive through or explore deep and ancient cypress swamps, river bottoms or flood plains in the Florida Panhandle or the Nature Coast, I always pause and listen periodically. I silently take my ancient Ivory-billed woodpecker plush toy out, now over 20 years old, and give it a long squeeze. I do it gingerly as I fear the day when the sound-making device inside gives out. Again, I fear losing the sounds of life to the silence of extinction.
I send forth a brief call, in part in expectation of the miracle of a response. But more importantly, a landscape that evolved with that call, that sound, that music, as an integral part of creation for the briefest of moments, has it again.
Without clear, resolute action to cherish and safeguard the wonders of creation in Florida, we may one day look to the air, to the waters, and to the forests and see and hear nothing. I support NWF because they engage in the science, conservation, and advocacy of pulling species back from the brink of extinction. It is noble and necessary work. I deeply appreciate it.
We can and must act to protect imperiled species. Or one day, all we might simply hear will be the sounds of extinction, a vast silence of nothingness that eludes even memory.

October was an especially painful moment for Hawai’i’s native bird populations. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife announced it was delisting 10 bird species from the endangered species list—because they had gone extinct. All but two were from Hawaii.
This puts Hawai’i at the center of the country’s extinction crisis. Hawai’i is the extinction capital of the world, and more specifically, the bird extinction capital of the world, according to experts.

Many of Hawai’i’s birds are endemic—meaning they’re found nowhere else on earth. These birds are native to our islands and once they’re gone, a bit of Hawaiian culture dies with them. Endemic birds were incorporated into everyday life. They are depicted in traditional Hawaiian oli, hula and mele (chants, dance and songs). We named our children after our favorite birds, and named special places where specific birds were known to frequent. Master craftspeople utilized the specific feathers from specific birds in making exquisite capes, helmets, royal standards, lei’s and in other decorative pieces. Once these birds are endangered or extinct, a whole culture involving them goes extinct as well.
These rare birds are disappearing before our eyes because of climate change, invasive species/predators, and loss of habitat. It is our kuleana (responsibility) to kōkua (help) our native birds and other native species that are on the brink of extinction by using every tool available to us to fight these threats.
One of those tools is the use of Incompatible Insect Technique (IIT) on mosquitos. Avian pox and malaria are decimating our native bird populations. Climate change and global warming allow the mosquitoes to inhabit higher elevations, squeezing out smaller areas for our native birds to escape. IIT would help combat deadly avian malaria by releasing male mosquitoes infected with the bacterium “Wolbachia,” which would suppress mosquito populations, thereby reducing the risk of transmission of vector-borne diseases. This method would be targeted for limited release on Kauai. Time to act is limited as our birds are going extinct now, yet the IIT process has been paused with court proceedings.
Our native honeycreepers are most at risk. We have five individuals of ‘akikiki left in the wild, and a few other birds like the ‘akeke’e, kiwikiu, and ‘akohekohe that are few in number. We are breeding a few in captivity, but we won’t be able to release them due to avian pox or avian malaria. If we don’t kōkua (help) now, we’ll lose more of our beloved species.

There are so many beautiful native bird calls in Hawai’i, but there is also a sad one. It was the call of the last Kauai O’o bird. He was calling for its mate, but it had perished. Males and females each have different calls and when they call together it’s like an orchestra of birdsong. But now, there isn’t a single O’o left on the face of this earth. This truly hits home as a Native Hawaiian, because this bird plays such a significant role in our heritage. The tradition was to pluck the bird’s yellow feathers then let the bird go. We only used the yellow feathers in making our traditional capes, helmets, royal standards, lei’s and other handiworks. Now what is left for the next generation? Our kids and grandkids can only see the O’o and the featherwork in the museum, and learn about them in books, song, chants, and hula.
There won’t be a bird that we can associate with in making these items or hearing them in songs. The whole tradition of bird catching, plucking feathers, crafting, and perpetuating that piece of Hawaiian culture died with that species. So this is what we must think of when we consider what’s at stake now. Are we willing to risk losing the few native species we have left?
Just as this bird needs its mate, we need our environment. In Ancient Hawai’i, just as my grandmother taught me, we associate everything in our environment, and this is ingrained in my being. Nothing is safe if our ecosystem isn’t safe.
The fate of all five of these species depends on successful reintroductions into the wild. The future of that work is currently in Congress’ hands.Will you release hope into the wild? More than one-third of America’s fish and wildlife species are now at increased risk of extinction. In the United States alone, more than 1,600 species are already listed under the Endangered Species Act — and state fish and wildlife agencies have identified more than 12,000 species of concern.
Equipped with modern technology, state wildlife agencies are teaming up with partners, especially zoos, to reintroduce struggling species back into the wild.
The problem is that modern breeding and reintroduction programs cost money, but many state wildlife agencies are scrambling for dollars — even as the wildlife crisis accelerates. State wildlife agencies have just five percent of the resources they need to implement their plans to help l wildlife.

The Karner blue butterfly’s journey of return shows what state wildlife agencies can do for many rare species that desperately need attention. This butterfly lives only in pine barrens, oak savannas, and dry grasslands of the upper Midwest and Northeast, and their caterpillars munch only on the leaves of the lupine wildflower.
The loss of its wild homes to development, and the suppression of fires that maintain the natural communities that support it, sent the butterfly tumbling toward extinction. Only a few habitat pockets remained when the Karner blue gained protection under the Endangered Species Act in 1992.
Since then, state wildlife agencies, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, zoos, and other partners have raised captive butterflies and restored their homes — with the added benefit of also helping species such as eastern whippoorwill, Blanding’s turtles, and frosted elfin butterflies.

In Concord, New Hampshire, school children have grown and planted wild lupine on 300 acres of restored habitat near the airport for two decades. The “Kids for Karners” program witnessed the return of the Karner blue from none to about 3,000 after many releases of captive-reared butterflies.
The story isn’t over in New Hampshire. It takes continuous management to replicate natural processes like fire to maintain the open prairies. That’s true for Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana, which also host Karner blue butterflies. The lesson? Recovery takes commitment.

Still critically endangered, the 500 condors living today descended from 14 of the 27 birds brought into captivity in 1987. Today, about 330 fly in the wild in California, Arizona, Utah, and Baja, Mexico. Their survival depends on state and tribal wildlife agencies, the USFWS as well as other partners intervening on their behalf.
Lead poisoning in the carcasses they eat remains a major threat.
Partnerships are key for states to succeed. The San Antonio Zoo raises and works with Texas Parks and Wildlife to reintroduce the iconic state reptile of Texas to its former homes — working with landowners to provide pesticide-free habitats with native harvester ants, a favorite food for the lizards that are listed as threatened in Texas.

This wily forest mammal vanished from Washington by the mid-1900s after over-trapping and habitat loss. After a successful reintroduction of fishers to the Olympic Peninsula in 2008, the Washington Department of Wildlife and partners have successfully relocated 260 fishers to the Cascade mountains.

This spectacular fish once swam Michigan’s rivers until the 1930s but were wiped out by habitat destruction, unregulated fishing, and competition from non-native fish. Today, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and over 50 partners are applying sophisticated techniques for a planned reintroduction. With support, this iridescent beauty will once more grace the riverways.

Unlike the highly visible death of Lonesome George and his subspecies, most species are becoming extinct without us even knowing when the last bell tolls. Human factors—habitat destruction, invasive species, pollution and others—have been wiping out species for decades, undoubtedly some we never even discovered before they were gone forever.
Now mankind is the driving force behind another extinction factor that is expected to move a third of the world’s species a step closer to extinction, within the lifespan of children born today. This driving force of extinction is, of course, climate change.
Yet, closed-minded people ignorant of science continue to deny Darwin’s theory of evolution and others still dispute man-driven climate change despite mountains of evidence. Both are so well-proven that informed non-believers could only be willfully ignoring or distorting the truth for their own self-serving purposes…such as getting re-elected to office or making money by preserving the status quo. Denying the reality of climate change (and evolution, for that matter) doesn’t change the truth.
It’s time we leave behind the dogmatic deniers of climate change. We’ll move forward without them, and we can. It won’t be easy to resolve the climate change crisis caused by our own pollution, but I think mankind has the ability to make changes. After all, we’ve made changes before. And we should do it again, not only for all the Lonesome Georges in the world, but in fact for ourselves.
Urge Congress to ensure that conservation programs are protected from federal budget cuts, and to support completion and implementation of the recent draft national plan to protect wildlife and wildlife habitat from the impacts of climate change. Budget cuts to conservation programs and failure to safeguard wildlife from climate change will lead more species, like the Florida Panther, to suffer the same fate as Lonesome George’s subspecies.
America’s investments in wildlife and natural resource conservation are in line with the values of the American.

The south Florida rainbow snake and Florida fairy shrimp may have names that sound magical, but the magic may have run out for both of them. According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, both species are probably extinct.
These two freshwater animals were in the long, long line for federal protection, but they never made it onto the Endangered Species list. The Florida fairy shrimp lived in a single pond just a few miles south of Gainesville. Its home, like the tiny creature, is gone now, destroyed by development. The south Florida rainbow snake was known to live in Fish Eating Creek, which flows into Lake Okeechobee.
There are hundreds of candidates waiting for Endangered Species Act protection, including several from the Sunshine State. Hopefully for them, things won’t go dark before they get the help they need to survive.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) recently announced that it has resolved a host of lawsuits concerning deadlines it missed to protect wildlife under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).
As someone working to defend and strengthen our nation’s premier wildlife protection law, I am pleased by this news.
For many years, hundreds of species – species like the Pacific fisher (see right), a beautiful weasel-like carnivore inhabiting the Western U.S. – have sat in the purgatory known as the “candidate species list.” The USFWS designates certain wildlife as “candidates” for listing when it finds that, despite their imperiled condition, it has higher priorities.
As a result, species that need extra attention and protection do not make it onto the ESA list.
The absence of Endangered Species Act safeguards for these creatures means habitat destruction continues unabated, the costs and difficulties of recovery continue to grow, and the possibility of extinction in our lifetimes becomes even more real.
As part of the settlement, the USFWS commits to clearing up the entire backlog of more than 250 candidate species within six years.
This means that for most of these species, action under the Endangered Species Act will finally be taken to rescue them from extinction.
It also means that the expert biologists at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will be working on protecting species rather than wasting precious resources defending the agency’s failure to meet its court deadlines.
Ultimately, it will be exciting to see what we as a nation can accomplish in restoring these and other crucial parts of our natural heritage once the tools and resources of the Endangered Species Act become available for all imperiled species.

Panther, puma, cougar, mountain lion, catamount: which is it?
The names written above are often used interchangeably; technically they are all common names for one species of wild cat called puma concolor. My high school’s mascot was the panther, even though the cats were maliciously hunted and eradicated from the Hudson Valley years ago. Only one subspecies of the nation’s largest cat remains in the eastern United States—the Florida panther. Although added to the Endangered Species List in 1973, there are fewer than 100 Florida panthers left in the wild.
