I’ve been quiet for a bit. Figured you guys would want to know what’s happening. My head felt super-passout-funky about a week and a half ago, a recurring feeling that hit me several times over a couple of days. I figured I needed some rest and a little battery recharging. I’m still writing bits and pieces of the twenty-one Mango shows that are left, but I’m also recharging the batteries. This very recent post by The Oatmeal reminded me I should let you guys know what’s happening: Creativity is Like Breathing.

For a few days a couple of weeks ago, instead of working on a Mango, I wrote this play, “The Three Spaces of Eve.” It was performed at the Internationsl Conference on the Fantastic in the Arts (a.k.a. ICFA) last week Friday. It’s definitely the type of thing you folks would like, though a little knowledge of the history of science fiction will go a long way toward appreciating the jokes.

In the interest of keeping my under-employed ass paying the bills, I’m showering you with audio temptation! I recently pulled out a story that I enjoyed writing some eighteen years ago called “And pSo It Goes.” I touched it up a bit, and recorded it.

This is not a Mango type story, but I hope it’s something you’d enjoy anyway. It’s a, fun, hour long, science fiction adventure about a twenty-first century guy who finds himself in the middle of a war between three twenty-third century gangs. Please forgive my shitty English accent, but the narrative style was inspired by Jonathan Gash’s Lovejoy novels and it seemed improper to do it in American. Here’s the first three minutes of it, so you can get a taste.

Everybody, love up Josh Leuze, the guy that fixes all the problems on this site that I don’t even know how to diagnose. The most current problems he solved were the issue with the player not showing up on the individual show links, and the Elitist shows not showing up at all. Hey, folks! Thank you guys for your love and money. I wanted to update you through the show itself, but I’m having a hell of a time finishing the next show. Here’s where we stand:

I’m extending the deadline by a week to make MuchoMangoMayo 2016 happen. I was afraid that if I made the window too big, people would say, “I’ll do it later,” and then forget. I’ve got some breathing room now, thanks to you, so I’m extending it.

To restate the goal, if I get $1,500 in donations between May 28th, 2015 and the end of June 13th, 2015, I will do MuchoMangoMayo next year. That’s 31 episodes of the show next May (which I definitely wasn’t planning to do otherwise).

We’re at $419.00 right now. That’s about 28% of the way there.

The books I was offering have all been spoken for. I’m looking around to see if I have any other goodies. If I find something, I’ll let you know in another update.

Thanks again for your help. I’ve gotten some wonderful, Mango-loving comments the past few days as well. It means a lot to me that you guys dig what I’m doing here and don’t want it to stop.

Hey, Gang, money hasn’t really been there for me lately. We seem to have had a bit of a falling out. While I’m already behind on my bills, I’m now looking at a couple of hundred bucks in car repairs and my identity was thieved today. The bank will cover what I lost in that last part, but not immediately.

Normally I could cover this through MuchoMangoMayo donations, but this year is the lowest amount of donations I’ve received of any May since the event started. Maybe the show sucks more, or maybe the incentive isn’t there since I’ve said I won’t do this again next year. I may have to swallow my words. (Won’t be the first time.)

Tell you what I’m going to do. If you love the show and you’ve never donated, show me your love and donate some dough through the donate button. I’ll take any amount you want to give, unless it’s under a dollar, because the fees may mean I’ll owe PayPal money.

If you’re one of the first four people to donate $30 or more, I’ll send you an autographed copy of a story collection or magazine that contains one of my stories. These are my contributor copies and they mean a lot to me, but apparently not that much when I need dough. If you donate $75 or more, I will make a personalized episode of Beware the Hairy Mango just for you. May be a couple of months down the line, but I will do it. You can give me some guidelines, which I’ll try to meet within reason and you can do whatever the hell you want with the resulting audio.

Now here’s the big prize and one I know I’ll be kicking myself for offering in the future. As I’ve said, Beware the Hairy Mango is coming to an end at the end of this year. Managing expectations here. There might be some MuchoMangoJunio this year, not that you’ll get more shows, but you won’t lose any either. It might be that I don’t get all the May shows done in time because I have to move again in the second half of April. That’ll make two moves in a month and a half, as opposed to one move last year. I’ll do what I can to get things done on time, but I’d rather not put myself in the hospital again this year trying to make it happen, especially because I’m uninsured at the moment.

Yo, gang! Beware the Hairy Mango will be five years old on September 14th! Holy crap! Never thought I’d last this long with this project. I thought it might be cool to do a participatory show to celebrate. What do you guys think? Like, maybe a question and answer show or something? You guys could send e-mails or mp3s. Tell me if you’re into it or if you’ve got a better idea. Keep in mind that I’m lazy, so don’t suggest anything even mildly elaborate.

We have to decide fast because we only have two weeks to put this together. Tell me what you’d like to do in the comments and share this post with other Mango fans who might not otherwise see it. I’ll make a decision in a few days so you guys will have time to do whatever and send it in.

I complain a lot on the show about being broke and then I beg for money. Adding things up for tax purposes, I just counted last year’s loot and I was touched by the money you guys gave for a few minutes of concentrated stupidity every week or two. Even though I want to stab myself every year around the third week of May, remembering your generosity will make me remove all the sharp objects from the house about a week before that happens. That isn’t to say I won’t injure myself with an eggbeater, but that, at least, would produce less blood.

Hey, folks. I’ve been sticking well to a regular Mango schedule for almost a year and a half now, so you have every right to expect the next show on the 15th. I’m sorry to say that I have to put it off a bit.

Super-Supporter and Dear Friend of the show, Emily, who posted here as Elke, passed away early yesterday morning. Among the other things that she did, Emily was the one who made sure I got the shows written. She was the sunshine on the Mango tree’s leaves. She loved this show and no one on Earth would want me to keep it rolling along smoothly more than she would. But although I’ve got the episode written, I haven’t recorded it, and there’s no way I can sell the funny in my state.

I wanted to record this message so the folks who only subscribe to the feed would get this news, but I couldn’t have even gotten through that. So episode 140 will be reaching you in maybe a week and a half to two weeks. The Mango is all about making people laugh and brightening up some days, so I’d rather do it right than stick to a schedule and disappoint.

Seems the Mango thought he’d have some fun by donning a bald wig. He didn’t expect his foolery to be so thick that I might nearly eat him (accidentally, of course (he’s my bread and butter)). So I’m in the waiting room of the local fruit vet as I write this, waiting for the bite marks to be buffed out. I got a couple of notes during the day from Tony at the Sofa saying how he could see donation traffic picking up yesterday. I’m hoping we’ll see even more traffic today.
