The idea that leaving the farm to indulge worldly ambitions led many to dissolution and ruin must have been a Canadian rural trope. In reply to Jeff Alworth. Numbers, eh! I haven’t bought into the pollsters are incompetent and compromised sources of info to the degree that I have with booze trade PR. The point here is why the BA like many trade commentators fight against acceptance of the obvious contraction of interest in their product. I advised an IT company right after the dot com bust over 25 years ago. “Stay the course!” and “ignore the numbers!” was never part of the analysis. Who is providing the better sort of advice now?

I’m not sure opinion polling counts as “stats” in the conventional sense. In 2021, according to Gallup, 60% of Americans said they drank at least occasionally. In 2022, 67% did. In 2024, 58% did. Gallup is not charting the actual percentage of drinking Americans substantially shifting their behavior year to year—we’re seeing statistical noise. Given the increasing disconnect between polling and election results in the U.S., we have a lot of evidence that polls are far from reliable statistical measures of a population. You don’t have to be paid by a beer lobby to see that.

Funnily enough, I’m drinking a pint of Ten Penny right now. They regularly serve it at the taproom in St. John, alongside some reliably interesting beers both new and from the books. You can grab ‘crowlers’ of them to go.

I didn’t know you are retired now Alan, a well-earned respite awaits! I am more forgiving I think on the genius stuff, it’s just terminology, tropes of one kind or another to describe, in a hackneyed phrase, a special passion. And it does exist, some people had/have it, independent of business considerations. E.g., Maytag, Koch, Grossman, McAullife, Cilurzo, and too many to name on our own turf here. They basically started the modern craft phenomenon, which is now big enough to stand on its own – good year bad year, it’s here to stay.

I like to limit my use of genius to actual geniuses. I have met a few but only a few. As a fellwo retired commercial lawyer myself, I agree that it isn’t easy bringing a brewery on line and keeping it going – but there isn’t anything particular about brewing compared to baking or publishing or any number of other business categories that earns those involved extra praise. What I like about the confessions of Mr. Hoop is he strips away the generic hagiographic film and still effectively finds in the specifics that remain a richer more particular pleasure where warranted.

With respect to some breweries or brewpubs viewed as destinations, and some brewers as geniuses, this was and remains a valid way to characterize what is also an industry. It depends how you look at it, after all. The true believers in this field “got” it then, and they get it now, all those “deranged about beer”, to use an expression I first heard from the mouth of beer-writer Michael Jackson in 1990s Toronto, at Orso, a John St. restaurant where he spoke at invitation of its owner John Maxwell. I was never in the beer business but as a former commercial lawyer, I understand well the realities of financing and running especially a start-up business. It was never easy, never will be easy. Note: I haven’t had the chance yet to read the article you linked, but am just conveying thoughts prompted by the extract you quoted.

I really enjoyed this post—I’ve been half-heartedly searching for a strawberry-pink china mug myself, but the Wedgwood green tankard you found is a great compromise. The antler-like handle description is spot on. Martyn’s comment about the plain straight-sided versions is interesting too; I didn’t know they came in light blue or khaki. Makes me want to browse antique shops more often.
