At the end of last summer I spent a couple days in Bigfork, Montana photographing the Crown of the Continent Guitar Festival and Workshop.  This last year has brought a consistent challenge of both writing and photographing stories simultaneously.  It’s been a difficult thing to try and do both well.  Lift your camera and you are missing a quote.  Write down an interesting observation and you miss a photo.  A constant trade off.  But at the same time it’s been wonderful to have something else creative to push me.

I am finding that writing more and more informs my visual work.  And it never hurts to have photos to bring me back to the place I’m describing.  I am so grateful to the editors that have put their faith behind both my words and images.  It’s given me a chance to grow and expand my skills — always a good challenge.

Throw in the fact that I love music and you’ve basically described a dream assignment.

The first day I spent time in the main lodge watching musician Mike Stern teach a class. Then I photographed the concert that night with Lee Ritenour and friends including John Oates.  My favorite thing is that everyone was having fun.  It felt like they all hit the lottery and were just getting to play whatever they wanted with their friends.  Isn’t that what all creative people want to do?  Hang out with their favorite people and do their thing?  It was wonderful.

The next day I hung out in classrooms again and watched people learning how to play blues tunes and jazz licks.  Also wonderful.  It made me wish I’d progressed beyond the terrible version of “Wipeout” I know on the guitar.  Ask Lido.  It’s truly terrible.

I spent time with both Darko the conductor and John the Executive Director interviewing and photographing them in addition to photographing a performance.  One of the coolest things was as I interviewed members of the community I asked them their favorite performance from the symphony.  Over and over people told me it was a concert with Allen Vizzutti and the symphony several years ago.  Allen is my husband Lido’s uncle and a professional trumpet player, but I know him best as someone who shares the same silly sense of humor as me.  It was fun to hear how many people enjoyed that performance.  Sometimes I forget how small a place Missoula can be.  Then it reminds me really quickly.

Time moves so fast and I can’t believe all of the adventure this year has brought us.  Owning your own business is hard, terrifying, amazing, fulfilling work.  There’s no safety net and sometimes it is almost makes you stop dead in your tracks when you realize how much work there is to do to make things happen.  But we are doing it.  Every day.  And I’m just so grateful.  We have amazing friends and family who listen to our ridiculous stories and complaints and who have helped us more than I thought possible.  And they still seem to like talking to us which is a small miracle in itself.

The next few weeks are going to be full of shoots and editing and moving.  It’s terrifying really, but I can’t wait.

Watching the sunrise while hiking up to Sacajawea Peak outside Bozeman, Montana was   a pretty stunning way to start the day.  I’d already been up since around 4 a.m.  After grabbing clothes and picking up the writer for my story on the Bridger Ridge Run, sunrise seemed practically like lunchtime.  At the orientation for the race the day before I’d heard stories of runners becoming so disoriented on the trail from overexertion and dehydration that they’d passed out under the shade of trees.  That’s why there’s a mandatory sweep of volunteers that run through behind the last competitor who leaves the start for this race: to make sure no one is left behind.  It’s also normal to have thunderstorms on the mountain range in the late summer afternoons.  So getting folks off the ridge line by 3 p.m. is a good idea.  After racers pick up their numbers at the start at Fairy Lake they continue on to run 19.65 miles up and then across the ridge of the mountains.  It’s beautiful, difficult, and breathtaking.  I was happy to just be photographing the festivities.

Sometimes there are stories that you cover that really stay with you.  Long after you are finished editing you still think about them.  On April 27th, German exchange student Diren Dede was shot and killed in his neighbor Markus Kaarma’s garage.  The investigation is ongoing.  I spent several days the week following his death working with the German magazine Stern covering the shooting, “Castle Doctrine,” gun laws in Montana, and the aftermath of the young man’s death.  There are no winners in the story and the heartbreak in the neighborhood and community was palpable.  This story and the circumstances surrounding Dede’s death have really stuck with me.  I’ll be following along with the rest of the community to see what happens in the legal system. Missoula, Montana

Classmates Chance Maes and Zack Plasmier attend Big Sky High School where they met and befriended Dede.

Representative Ellie Hill is looking to introduce a bill to change the current “Castle Doctrine” laws in Montana.  Hill, a gun owner herself, says that Montana has a culture and history around guns including hunting, collecting, and self defense.  “We honor that culture in Montana, but not at all costs,” said Hill.

“What can we do to ensure that this tragedy informs the community so the next one doesn’t happen?” asks Missoula Mayor John Engan.
