These days my most commonly referred to map is in the form of Google Maps, with it abstract vectors outlining streets and buildings and parks. It covers a few use cases: How to go to some new destination; which route to pick with the least traffic; checking opening hours for a restaurant; finding an ATM close to the shop that only takes cash.

But there are so many more types and uses of maps. The best collection of real-world maps with incredible details I’ve seen are in the Vatican museum. They have a long gallery with gigantic maps, covering the walls on both sides.

Maps also show up in a lot of fantasy books. One of the best known is Tolkien’s map for middle earth in The Lord of the Rings. In one German edition of the books, this large print was included:

When I was running my own pen&paper RPG campaigns, I drew a few maps as well, both on paper and digital. For example, for a Western campaign in 1880s Colorado, I scribbled maps for some of the scenes.

For later campaigns I also used tools like Excalidraw to draw some simple digital maps:

For a Song of Ice and Fire campaign set in The Vale of Arryn, in Westeros, I used a satellite image from Norway and scribbled some paths and places on top:

Not pretty, but it did make travel along the Vale much easier.

To close it off, let’s quote Tolkien (in a letter to Naomi Mitchison):

I wisely started with a map, and made the story fit (generally with meticulous care for distances). The other way about lands one in confusions and impossibilities, and in any case it is weary work to compose a map from a story — as I fear you have found.

Nach etwa zweieinhalb Jahre mit Bogenschießen als Hobby und Sport merkte ich, dass mir eine Option fehlt, auch zu Hause zu trainieren. Ein reguläres Training mit Autofahrt dauert mindestens drei Stunden; in der Wintersaison steht unsere Halle nur an bestimmten Tagen und Zeiten zur Verfügung; draußen ist es stark vom Wetter abhängig. Andere Schützen, die zu Hause trainieren, haben mehr Platz als ich. Eine Online Recherche, wie mit wenig Platz das funktionieren kann, ergab allerdings nichts brauchbares. Ich brauchte eine eigene Lösung. Im folgenden beschreibe ich, was ich gebaut habe und wie ich damit seitdem trainiere.

Der Plan

Als erstes habe ich mit meiner Frau unsere komplette Wohnung angeschaut. Es gibt zwar Stellen mit mehr Distanz, aber keine davon kam für ein Training mit Bogen und spitzen Pfeilen in Frage. Am Ende blieb als einzige Option unser Schlafzimmer. Mit einem Ziel an einer Wand, während ich zwischen Bett und Kleiderschrank steht, mit kaum zwei Meter Abstand zum Ziel. Zur Sicherheit bleibt die Zimmertür geschlossen, solange ich trainiere, oder abgeschlossen, falls Gäste im Haus sind.

Um sicher zu sein, dass diese Stelle überhaupt fürs Training geeignet ist, wollte ich erstmal meinen Plan austesten. Dazu holte ich mir eine ausrangierte Schaumstoff-Scheibe von meinem Verein, balancierte diese auf einem großen Pappkarton (gefährlich, besonders für meine Pfeile) und schoss drei Pfeile rein. Das funktionierte gut genug, allerdings wurde auch klar, dass ich eine bessere Scheibe brauche, die nicht wesentlich dicker sein dürfte, aber die Pfeile besser stoppen muss. Zum einen durch die kurze Entfernung, zum anderen dadurch, dass die Scheibe sehr nah an der Wand sein muss, damit der Platz reicht.

Mir war bekannt, dass es drei verschiedene Materialien für Zielscheiben gibt: Komprimiertes Stroh, solide Schaumstoff-Blöcke und komprimierte Schichten aus dünnem Schaumstoff (Lamellenscheiben). Ich wollte kein Stroh und habe keine Schaumstoff-Scheiben gefunden, die stark genug sind. Allerdings hatte ich gutes über Lamellenscheiben gelesen und gehört. Ein Händler meines Vertrauens, bei dem ich auch Komponenten für Pfeile bestellt hatte, bestätigte auf Nachfrage meine Wahl.

Diese Art von Zielscheibe braucht einen Rahmen, um die Schaumstoff-Lagen zusammen zu halten. Das wurde zu einem wichtigen Teil meines Plans:

Nach einigem Austausch mit Freunden und anderen Bogenschützen kam ich auf eine relativ simple Lösung, um die Scheibe an der Wand zu befestigen: Vier Winkel, mit denen man eigentlich ein Regal baut, an die Wand schrauben, und die Scheibe dazwischen schieben. Dann mit Holzschrauben durch die Winkel in den Rahmen das ganze fixieren.

Ich wollte auch einen ultimativen Schutz für die Wand dahinter, im Bogensport genannt “Backstop”. Irgendwann würden Pfeile durchgehen und sollten dann nicht direkt in der Wand landen. Der Backstop wiederum sollte mich dann darauf aufmerksam machen, dass ich die Scheibe reparieren oder austauschen muss.

Die Umsetzung

Um den Plan in die Tat umzusetzen, habe ich eine 90x90x30cm Lamellenscheibe bei arrowforge.de bestellt. Die restlichen Teile habe ich bei einem Baumarkt gekauft. Für den Backstop habe ich mir dort eine 15mm dicke Spanplatte in derselben Größe wie die Scheibe zuschneiden lassen. Dann habe ich mir noch einen Bohrhammer von Nachbarn geliehen.

Als erstes habe ich geprüft, ob es Kabel in der Wand geben könnte. Davon ausgehend, dass sie in der Regel nur vertikal und horizontal von Steckdosen aus verlegt sind, schien es dort kein Risiko zu geben. Ich habe zunächste die alte Schaumstoff-Scheibe benutzt, um die Lamellescheibe an der richtigen Höhe zu positionieren und zu markieren, wo ich bohren musste.

Acht Löcher mit Dübeln später konnte ich die Winkel festschrauben. Dann den Backstop dort rein stellen und die Scheibe davor, mit Holzschrauben befestigt. Zwischen das Backstop-Brett und die Scheibe habe ich auch noch eine alte Decke gelegt, damit es noch etwas Abstand und vielleicht etwas Lärmdämpfung gibt.

Für die Lamellenscheibe habe ich 200 € bezahlt, dazu etwa 40 € für die restlichen Teile, also ingesamt 240 €.

Die Praxis

Generall bin ich zufrieden mit dieser Lösung. Ich kann meinen Schußablauf und meine Ausdauer trainieren. Wenn ich kleine Kreise auf Pappe oder alten Auflagen an die Scheibe hängen, kann ich auch mit Zielen trainieren.

Mit der Zeit haben sich ein paar Probleme ergeben, mit denen ich umgehen musste:

  1. Mein Bogen ist groß und stark genug, dass es beim Schießen in so einem kleinen Raum ganz schön laut ist. Ich verwende jetzt immer Gehörschutz.
  2. Das Schlafzimmer ist zwar 2,50m hoch, aber bei meiner Größe mit einem 70 Zoll Bogen ist das nicht genug. Mit dem oberen Wurfarm habe ich die Tapete an der Decke angekratzt und einen Rauchmelder getroffen. Ich habe das umgangen, indem ich nur bis zu einer halbwegs sicheren Höhe auf der Scheibe ziele und mit einem Stück Pappe an der Decke (Bild siehe weiter unten) die Tapete schütze.
  3. Mein Sohn schläft tief und fest, aber kann nicht einschlafen, wenn ich nebenan trainiere. Ich muss also warten, bis er wirklich schläft, was mir eher zu spät fürs Training wird, oder früh genug anfangen.
  4. Da ich nicht die komplette 90x90cm Fläche als Ziel nutzen kann, schieße ich oft auf einen eher kleinen Bereich. Nach etwa vier Monaten ging dann der erste Pfeil komplett bis zum Backstop durch (immerhin gut hörbar!), was schneller ging als erwartet. Danach habe ich erstmal die Scheibe auf den Kopf gedreht. Hinten-nach-Vorne drehen ginge auch, aber bringt vermutlich weniger. Irgendwann kann ich das ganze öffnen und die unbeschädigten Schichten oben und unten in die Mitte verlegen. Und dann ein Kit mit Ersatz-Lamellen kaufen.
Ein Stück Pappe an der Decke, damit ich nicht weiter die Tapette zerkratze. Am Rauchmelder habe ich bereits einen Schalter abgeschossen.

Das ganze Setup ist kein Ersatz für Training auf Wettkampf-relevanten Distanzen (18m+), aber als Ergänzung ist es gut, wenn ich nicht raus oder in die Halle kann.

Back in September 2025, after about two and a half years doing archery as a hobby and sport, I decided I need the option to train at home: A regular training session with driving is at least three hours; our indoor training during the winter season is only possible on specific days and times; training outdoors is dependent on the weather. The people I talked to, that were training at home, had indoor or outdoor space unavailable to me. I did some research, but found no useful information for a setup with very little space. So I needed to come up with my own solution. Here’s what I’ve built and used since.

The Plan

After reviewing every corner of our apartment with my wife, we’ve decided that the only option would be a small space in our bedroom. A target on one wall, me shooting from barely two meters distance, standing between bed and wardrobe. For safety the door stays closed while I’m shooting, or even locked if there’s guests in the apartment.

Before I started investing into the equipment or building something, I wanted to test this plan. For that I got a used target from my sports club, hauled it home, precariously (and dangerously for my arrows) placed it on a large cardboard box and shot three arrows into it. I learned that the plan basically works, but I needed a much better target, since the old foam target was too thin for arrows shot at such a short distance, into a target that had to be really close to a wall.

From training and tournaments I knew about three types of targets: compressed straw, solid blocks of foam and thin foam layers compressed into the right shape. I didn’t want any straw, I didn’t find foam targets thick enough, but I’ve read and heard good things about layered foam target. The people at arrowforge.de, where I had ordered arrow components, also told me this would be a good choice.

These types of targets have some kind of frame, which hold the foam layers together. Like this:

After a lot of exchanges with crafty friends and other archers, I came up with a relatively simple solution of attaching the target to the wall, making use of the wooden framed target I wanted to buy: Get four brackets meant for building a shelf, attach those to the wall, and put the target in-between. Then put wood screws from top and bottom through the brackets into the target, to hold it firmly in place.

I also wanted some kind of backstop: If When the target is eventually so damaged that arrows go through, I don’t want them to go into the wall. They need to be caught by something else first, which then gives me a signal to repair or replace the target.

The Build

With this in mind, I ordered the 90x90x30cm target online at arrowforge.de and bought the remaining parts at a local hardware store. For the backstop I had them cut a 15mm thick piece of wood to the same size as the target. I borrowed a decent drill from neighbors, then went to work.

First I soft-checked if I might hit electric cables. Hoping the cables only go in vertical and horizontal lines from the sockets, I felt safe enough. I used the used foam target to balance the new target at the height where I wanted to install it and mark the spots on the wall where to drill.

Eight holes filled with screw anchors later, I could install the brackets. Then place the backstop, then the target within (best to do with some helping hands; I again used the foam target to position it in front) and secure the target in place with wood screws. I also placed an old blanket between the backstop and the target, to leave a small air-gap and, hopefully, a bit of sound dampening.

At 200 € for the target and about 40 € for the other parts, the total came down to 240 €.

The Practice

In general I’m happy with this setup. I can practice my form and endurance. When aiming at very small circles, I can also practice shooting while aiming.

I’ve ran into a few issues I had to work around:

  1. Shooting a long bow with decent force in such a small space is loud! I now always put in hearing protection.
  2. Our bedrooms ceiling is at 2,50m. This turned out not to be high enough to be shooting a 70 inch recurve bow! I ended up scratching the ceiling as well as hitting the smoke detector that happened to be installed in just the wrong place. I now avoid aiming at the upper part of the target and attached some cardboard above the area where the upper limb is (see image further below).
  3. My son is a deep sleeper, but shooting while he’s trying to fall asleep next door doesn’t work. I either have to wait for him to be properly asleep, but that gets quite late for training, or start early enough.
  4. Since I can’t use the full 90x90cm target (ceiling, ruining my form), I ended up shooting at a relatively small part of the target. It took about four months for the first arrow make it all the way through to the backstop (at least easy to hear!), less time than I expected. When that happened, I turned the target upside-down. I can also try to turn it around (backside to the front), but I expect that will have less of an effect. Eventually I’ll have to open it up and rearrange the layers to get the fresh ones in the middle. Beyond that, I can buy “repair kits” to replace some foam layers.

This is certainly no replacement for training on proper distances (18m+), but it gives me another option when proper distances are not feasible.

I like to listen to music by full albums, in the original track order. Often I listen to all albums of one artist, in chronological order. When I tried Spotify some years ago, the only way to get that order was to create a playlist and add each album to that playlist, manually, for every artist. That was the main reason why I didn’t get a Spotify subscription and instead continued to collect mp3 files on my own computer. I used to buy albums from Amazon and Apple, but both made their regular stores worse over time, promoting their own subscriptions. In parallel, the offering on Bandcamp became better and better, so these days I buy 98% of my music there. I probably spend more money on Bandcamp then I’d spend on a subscription, but I get to keep it all “forever”!

Since that approach is rather the exception these days, I figured I could write down the different puzzle pieces, maybe inspiring others to do the same, or improve some part of their flow.

Aquisition

Bandcamp is my primary source of new music. The sale in 2023 from Epic Games to songtradr has not done any damage to the platform, as far as I can tell. It probably did the people who lost their jobs along the way. Bandcamp takes a 15% commission (with exceptions), so generally a lot of the money goes to the artists.

Not everything I’m interested in is on Bandcamp (like Opeth, only has older stuff from their old label). I recently tried Qobuz as an alternative. They also sell a subscription, but have a regular store for buying digital downloads. Some of the process is pretty annoying, including the in-transparent choice in audio quality (what’s the difference between “Hi-res 44.1 kHz” and “CD-quality”?), but it works.

Syncing across devices and backup

After buying, downloading, unzipping, editing (sometimes I remove “Remaster” from album or track titles) and copying to my music folder, I use Resilio Sync (free with registration) to copy everything between my work MacBook and my Windows PC; and to selectively sync to my Android smartphone (which doesn’t have enough space for the whole collection).

On the Windows PC I do yearly backups to an external hard-drive, which I store in another room than the computers. I also run the Google Drive app on the PC to backup the whole music folder to my Google Drive account. That way I keep my collection even if I somehow loose all my devices with a full copy of the collection.

I want to replace Google Drive and other Google services eventually. Maybe this year.

Listening

I mostly work from home and often listen to music while working. On the work MacBook, I use Swinsian. That’s a recent discovery, since I was finally fed up with Apple Music. While migrating to Swinsian, I discovered that some of my playlists had albums in the wrong order – thanks Apple. I think the 35 USD are a good investment.

On my Android smartphone, I’m using Poweramp to listen to the albums synced with Resilio Sync. It usually picks up the new folders automatically. I’ve bought a license years ago and was never pressured into upgrades or subscriptions.

I mostly use the Windows PC to play games on the couch. So music playback is pretty rare, but foobar2000 still works well, for free.

I’m happy with this setup: The money I pay mostly goes to the artists, who hopefully make more music I’ll like. I use software from small independent companies, with very little vendor lockin. Replacing all my Google Driv and usage is going to take some effort, but moving the music collection elsewhere should be rather easy.

Am 8. April 2021 war ich das erste mal für den ADFC bei einem “Runden Tisch Radverkehr” dabei. Für Kalk war das auch ein Novum, da bisher das Format ohne Verbände stattgefunden hatte. Die Zusammenarbeit zwischen einigen Mitgliedern der neu gewählten Kalker Bezirksvertretung mit der Verwaltung (Planer vom Radverkehrsbeauftragen), dem VCD und uns als ADFC fing vielversprechend an. An insgesamt elf Terminen über die fünf Jahre verteilt wurden eine Menge Maßnahmen diskutiert, Pläne beleuchtet und Beschlüsse vorbereitet. 

Auf der Straße ist davon leider wenig angekommen. Nur zwei relevante Maßnahmen wurden umgesetzt: 

  1. Radfahrstreifen entlang der Kalker Hauptstraße zwischen Walter-Pauli-Ring und Grünebergstraße 
  1. Umgestaltung eines Teils der Kalk-Mülheimer-Straße, mit mehr Platz fürs Rad und Tempo 30 

Selbst diese Maßnahmen hinterlassen Probleme, vor allem tägliche Konflikte zwischen Radfahrern und illegal parkenden Autos. 

Die großen Projekte des “Runden Tischs” existieren leider nur in Dateien: 

  • Radverkehrshauptnetz, zu dem wir über 60 Verbesserungen beigesteuert haben 
  • Fahrradstraßennetz 
  • Fast finalisierte Trassenführung für die Rad Pendler Route 3 (nach Rösrath) 

Wer heute im Bezirk Kalk Rad fährt, merkt nichts von diesen Plänen. Dies spiegelt sich auch im Ergebnis des Fahrradklimatests wider, in dem Kalk die schlechteste Gesamtbewertung aller Kölner Bezirke erhalten hat. Nach unserer Einschätzung hat daran den größten Anteil die weiterhin katastrophale und gefährliche Situation der Kalker Hauptstraße. Statt den Beschluss der Bezirksvertretung von Mai 2021 zur weitestgehenden Befreiung vom motorisierten Verkehr zügig umzusetzen, ist hier nichts passiert. Insbesondere im Verkehrsausschuss des Rats wurde immer wieder verschleppt und ausgebremst. Selbst die erfolgte Öffentlichkeitsbeteiligung von 2023 mit großer und zustimmender Beteiligung wurde zuletzt im Juni 2025 ignoriert und neu angesetzt. 

Die Umsetzung dieses Projekts sowie der guten Gesamtkonzepte wird unser Thema für die nächsten 5 Jahre werden. Wir hoffen wieder auf eine gute Zusammenarbeit, aber diesmal auch auf echte Verbesserungen auf den Straßen.

Hier ist ein Sammlung davon was ich bisher über Pfeile gelernt habe, die im modernen Recurve-Bogenschießen verwendet werden.

Ein moderner Pfeil besteht aus mindestens 4 Elementen:

  1. einer Spitze aus Metall. Dies ist der spitze Teil, der immer vom Bogenschützen (und allen anderen) weg zeigen sollte
  2. einem Schaft, der oft aus Carbon (Kohlenstoff), aber auch aus Aluminium oder einer Mischung aus beidem besteht
  3. drei mal Befiederung, in der Regel kleinen “Fahnen” aus leichtem Kunststoff
  4. eine Nocke, aus Kunststoff. Die Nocke wird direkt in den Schaft gesteckt oder mit einem Metallstift dazwischen. Hier wird der Pfeil an der Sehne des Bogens eingesteckt.

Diese Elemente tragen in unterschiedlichem Maße zu der wichtigsten Variable eines Pfeils bei: der Steifigkeit, die auch im Deutschen als Spine (englisch Wirbelsäule oder Rückrat) bezeichnet wird. Spine beschreibt die Steifigkeit oder Elastizität des Pfeils. Der Spine muss auf die Pfeillänge und das Zuggewicht abgestimmt sein. Er wird auf eine standartisierte Weise gemessen und führt zu Werten wie 600 (300 wäre ein sehr steifer Pfeil, 1200 ein sehr weicher). Um mehr darüber zu erfahren, warum sich Pfeile beim Schießen biegen müssen, lohnt es etwas über das Bogenschützen Paradox zu lernen. Dieses Video von Smarter Every Day erklärt es ganz gut:

Spitze

Diese gibt es in verschiedenen Formen und Gewichten. Beim Recurve-Bogenschießen sehen sie normalerweise so aus:

Der größte Teil der Komponente ist in den Schaft eingeklebt, nur die Spitze ragt aus dem Schaft heraus. Das Gewicht der Spitze beeinflusst den Spine des Pfeils: Mit mehr Spitzengewicht verhält sich der Pfeil weicher, mit weniger Gewicht fester.

Schaft

Bei dünnen Carbonpfeilen für das Bogenschießen im Freien sind die beiden Variablen für den Schaft die Länge und der Spine.

Die Länge des Schafts muss der Anatomie des Bogenschützen entsprechen (im Wesentlichen im Verhältnis zur Länge des Zugarms). Dies kann zunächst mit einem Messpfeil (ein dicker Pfeil ohne Spitze mit einer Skala darauf) gemessen werden.

Der Spine muss dem Zuggewicht des Bogenschützen entsprechen, das sich aus dem Druck auf die Finger bei vollem Zug ergibt. Der richtige Spine-Wert kann zunächst mit Hilfe von Tabellen ermittelt werden, die von den Pfeilherstellern angeboten werden.

Als Beispiel: Bei meinem aktuellen Zuggewicht von etwa 29 Pfund und 31 Zoll Pfeillänge empfiehlt Easton einen Spine zwischen 640 und 570.

Befiederung

Als Befiederung werden die drei „Federn“ bezeichnet, die in der Regel in Form von Kunststoff-Flügeln in der Nähe der Nocke des Pfeils auf den Schaft geklebt werden. Es gibt eine große Vielfalt an Formen und Farben:

Die Befiederung hat großen Einfluss darauf, wie sich ein Pfeil im Flug verhält.

Nocke

Eine Nocke ist ein kleines Kunststoffteil, das am Ende des Pfeilschafts befestigt wird. Es gibt verschiedene Konstruktionen – manche stecken direkt im Schaft, andere sitzen auf einem kleinen Metallstift. Nocken können von anderen Pfeilen getroffen werden – der Metallstift soll den Schaft schützen, wenn das passiert.

Die Nocke verbindet den Pfeil mit der Bogensehne, daher muss die Größe der Nocke der Breite der Sehne entsprechen. Wenn du einen Pfeil nockst und den Bogen waagerecht hältst, sollte der Pfeil an der Sehne haften. Wenn man die Sehne von oben anschlägt, sollte der Pfeil nach unten fallen.

Zusammenbau

Bislang habe ich meine Pfeile nicht von Grund auf selbst gebaut. Ich musste die Nocken austauschen, was bei weitem das Einfachste ist (einstecken). Ich habe auch die Federn ersetzt, wofür ich mir kürzlich ein eigenes Befiederungswerkzeug, einen Bitzenburger, gekauft habe:

Here is a brain dump of what I’ve learned so far about arrows used in contemporary recurve archery.

A modern arrow consist of at least 4 elements:

  1. a point, some kind of metal. This is the pointy bit that should always point away from the archer (and anyone else)
  2. a shaft, often made of carbon; also from aluminum or a mix of carbon and metal
  3. 3 times fletching, usually plastic vanes
  4. a nock, made of plastic. Plops into the shaft directly or with some metal pin in between. This is where the arrow attaches to the string of the bow.

These elements contribute to a varying degree to the most important variable of an arrow: spine. Spine describe the stiffness or elasticity of the arrow. The spine needs to be aligned with the arrow length and the draw weight. It’s measured in a specific way the leads to values like 600 (300 would be a very stiff arrow, 1200 a very soft one). Let’s go into a bit more detail in each of the four elements:

Point

These come in different shapes and weights. For recurve target archery, they usually look like this:

Most of the component is glued inside the shaft, only the tip is out in front of it. The weight of the point influences the arrow’s spine: With more point weight, the arrow behaves softer, with less weight it behaves firmer.

Shaft

Focusing on thin carbon arrows for outdoor target archery, the two variables for the shaft are the length and spine.

The length of the shaft needs to match the anatomy of the archer (basically relative to the length of the draw arm). This can initially be measured with a measuring arrow (a thick arrow without a point, with a scale on it).

The spine needs to match the draw weight of the archer, based on the pressure on the fingers at full draw. Finding the right spine value can initially be done with charts provided by arrow manufacturers.

Fletching

Fletching are the three “feathers”, usually in the form of plastic vanes, glued near the nock end of the arrow on the shaft. There is a lot variety in shapes and colors:

Fletching strongly influences how an arrow behaves in flight.

Nock

A nock is a small plastic part that attaches to the end of the shaft. There’s various constructions – some stick directly into the shaft, others sit on top of a small metal pin. Nocks end up being hit by other arrows – the metal pin is supposed to protect the shaft when that happens.

The nock connects the arrow to the bow string, so the size of the nock needs to match the width of the darmparasitose.de string. When nocking an arrow and holding the bow horizontally, the arrow should stick to it. When tapping the string from the top, the arrow should fall down.

Assembling

So far I haven’t built my own arrows from scratch. I had to replace nocks, which is by far the most trivial (stick ’em in). I also replaced vanes, for which I recently bought my own fletching tool, a Bitzenburger:

Here I learned the value of sending many emails and not to be afraid of dog poop.

In December 2017 we moved into our current apartment. Back then, there was a path nearby, that looked promising, but ended after 5 meters. There was a sign covered by a black plastic bag. After some years, the bag had fallen apart and revealed a sign for a shared pedestrian and bike path:

If this path would exist, we could use it as a shortcut, saving 250m on foot or bike:

In the summer of 2021 I asked my contact in the city administration (Stadtverwaltung), who’s involved in planning bike infrastructure in our district, about this. At first he said that due to a school being planned in the area to the north (the grey area in the screenshot above, inside the blue dotted path), he couldn’t give me details, but forwarded the question to the responsible department.

Half a year later, we didn’t have any update and nothing was being built. But by coincidence, a friend and me found some plans for this city quarter from 2003 (19 years old!) where this path was already included:

That was in January 2022. It took a bunch more emails and another one and a half years, till August 2023, that the construction actually started. By then the new school had already opened.

I found it somewhat amusing that the first thing they did was to damage the poor blue sign that had been standing there uselessly for 6+ years. At least it had the company of this parking forbidden sign, which had seen things:

By October 2023 they even finished the 3 lamps:

When the path was finally done, we started using it quite often. A year later in August 2024, my son started going to school. And since he went to the new school to the north of the path, we’ve been using this path twice daily.

Part 2

Since I feel like having some responsibility for this path, and use it so often, I noticed a growing problem: While many people use this path, some drop their trash there, which mostly ends up in the shrubs on the side. And people walk their dogs here – and some leave their dog poop behind, on the path.

My first attempt at fixing this problem was a trash collection done with some kids who live close by or go to the same school. In November 2024 I registered this as an AWB (the city organization usually responsible for keeping the city clean) Putzmunter event, which at least ensured that the trash bags we filled would get picked up the next day. I borrowed some tools from KRAKE, who also provided me with gloves and trash bags (I could’ve picked those up from AWB, too). With about 15 people, from toddlers to grandmas, we collected trash along the path and around the school, filling three trash bags. We also collected pieces of a TV and a can of nitrous oxide (laughing gas):

But this didn’t have any lasting effect. AWB kept ignoring the path. Trash started collecting again, a week after our cleanup. And once some dog poop was on the path, more showed up quickly. There were no trash cans at either side.

What do to? Send more emails! This proved successful again. Someone admitted, maybe by accident, that AWB wasn’t responsible for cleaning this path. When I asked a few times who then IS responsible, eventually they let me know that they’re going to take the responsibility from January 2025 onward. By early February they finally cleaned up the leftovers from New Years. They also installed trash cans on both sides of the path, one with dog poop bags:

Unfortunately this did not solve the dog poop problem. That kept showing up, mostly on the right side of the path, next to the shrubs. My contact at AWB didn’t have any recommendations for dealing with this.

One day I finally decided to try some direct action: I found a sturdy enough stick and pushed five piles of dog poop into the shrubs. And for about a week the path was dog poop free!

My theory for now: There is a breed of dog owner that’s willing to pick up their dog’s shit as long as everyone else does it. But if there is already dog poop lying around, they’ll just leave theirs as well. “Why should I clean if others don’t?” would be their rationale.

I’m planning another cleanup event once spring is arriving for good. We’ll then have to instruct every helper not to step foot into the poop-hiding shrubs…

Hermes supports plenty of modern JavaScript features, yet any current React Native app will have its source code processed by a bunch of babel plugins, transforming modern JS code into not-so-modern one.

In our case this bothered me in particular when debugging events handlers that make use of JavaScript’s async/await feature. Hermes supports this natively, but one of the babel plugins included in the build process, would replace each instance with generators (also a relatively new JS feature, but not quite as new as async/await). The resulting stacktrace, if not properly mapped to the original source code, is much harder to read, since there’s usually two extra items in the stack, one referring to a function injected by babel called _asyncToGenerator.

Trying to stop this transform from happening turned into quite a deep rabbit whole. I’ll summarize here what we learned:

  1. our babel.config.js uses babel-preset-expo as the only present
  2. babel-preset-expo in turn uses @react-native/babel-preset as a preset
  3. @react-native/babel-preset includes @babel/plugin-transform-async-to-generator as a plugin
  4. @babel/plugin-transform-async-to-generator itself transform async functions to generators!

To figure out this chain of dependencies, npm ls was useful:

This is now the 10th patch we’re maintaining, despite using renovate for greenkeeping.

After we verified our app still works fine without this transform, I figured I can at least ask if this could be upstreamed to @react-native/babel-preset. In short: no, at least not yet. From the community discussion post:

  • @react-native/babel-preset needs to support JSC (ie Safari on iOS >= 15.4, and the version of JSC we build for Android) as well as Hermes, so support needs to be universal before we remove plugins completely, but we can gate individual plugins by target (isHermes).
  • There may be runtime performance implications, we can check with the Hermes team or run an experiment case-by-case on that.
  • Static Hermes is coming soon-ish, which will have a very different level of language support and performance characteristics, so it might make sense to hold off for that.
