Hi John, what a wonderful story. Would you mind getting in touch with me at zzqdoc@gmail.com? I’d like to hear more about your time with Wayne. Thanks! -Ann

If you weren’t listening to those guys, playing that music in the 1970s, you weren’t someone I could relate to. The style and knowledge that they delivered with such ease and authority shaped my love of recorded music and drove my passion to see those acts perform live whenever they toured near Jackson.
In 1978, I became housemates with Wayne and Drake at what we half jokingly called “The BeBop Convention Center”, Drake’s brand new house on Messina Drive, located on the outskirts of suburban infinity in north Jackson. It became the after hours lounge for the WZZQ faculty with all night research sessions for future on-air song themes: “Hey man, what if we did an uninterrupted hour of nothing but songs about rain?”.
In December that year, Wayne and I did a winter roadtrip to Key West in his Alfa on which he never relinquished the radio’s tuning knob. For eighteen hours across four states, as we listened to each hapless DJ finish his song intro, Wayne began hunting for another, never listening to the actual music as he critiqued the style and knowledge of each radio host.

I grew up with it until the end. I do have to disagree with you on with the ages in your description. I was 13 or 14 listening to WJDX then WZZQ. I’ll be 65 this year. So the 35-50 is way off base. Younger sisters who are going to be 63 & 61. We slept with the radio on all night. Unfortunately that is a part of Jackson history that will never be forgotten. It is that history and the DJS who shaped my taste is music. They were everyone’s friends not just someone behind the controls.

We didn’t have much, but we received the best damn radio station ever!
