AA Salt are very pleased to support the fantastic Christmas Bingo Box Challenge organised by ISO Quality Services Ltd. All food parcels will be donated to Worcester Food Bank.

Over the past year alone, food banks in the Trussell Trust network distributed 2.9 million food parcels across the UK. That’s one parcel every 11 seconds! The demand stays consistently high and demand for the food bank is not easing.

Hunger is a deeply personal. Most of us know how irritable we feel if lunch is delayed by just a couple of hours. Now imagine living with that feeling all day, every day. It’s exhausting and debilitating, but sadly, it’s reality for too many people in our community.

The Trussell Trust has warned that the situation is now more critical than ever, with more families forced into poverty and left with no choice but to turn to food banks for help.

Celebrating 25 Years in Business https://aasalt.co.uk/25-years-of-aa-salt/ https://aasalt.co.uk/25-years-of-aa-salt/#respond Wed, 10 Sep 2025 15:31:48 +0000 https://aasalt.co.uk/?p=5443

25 Years of AA Salt

2025 marks a proud milestone for AA Salt – our 25th anniversary of providing specialist gritting and snow clearing services across the UK.

A message from our Managing Director Ben Tanner:

What started as a local operation and soon expanded nationwide, as our commitment to customer service and excellence helped build a reputation that travelled beyond our local region.

In 2006, my father, the founder and primary director of the business, sadly passed away.  My mother, Nikki, stepped up to run the business from our home office, all while raising my sister and me and navigating her new reality.

Against these odds, not only did the company stay afloat, but with her direction and values, it continued to grow year on year.  That early resilience shaped our identity and the values we are built on and still operate towards today:

S – Service driven; we never give up, always striving to improve

A – Always there; we’re proud to support the loyal customers who built the company alongside us

L – Loyal and skilled; our team is the backbone of our business and we make sure they know it

T – Together; we show up, every time, for each other and you.

As the business continued to grow, Nikki was joined by her new husband Mark, who brought invaluable business expertise. Together, they continued to grow AA Salt.  And in 2019 we were proud to win the Family Business of the Year Award from Hereford and Worcester Chamber of Commerce. I started helping out at weekends while still in school, learning from the ground up. As the winters rolled by (even during the Beast from the East!) my passion for the business only grew stronger.

Fast forward to 2020, just in time for the COVID-19 pandemic, I stepped into the role of Managing Director. By then AA Salt had grown into a national operation, with a wide client base and dozens of employees, who I knew closely as family, friends and loyal colleagues.

I proudly accepted the challenge of leading AA Salt with the goal of ensuring that it remains something my family and all involved can be proud of, not just today but for the next 25 years. I carry our values with me and invest my time and resources into the business and our employees with the hope that it will be something my children can be just as proud of in its 50th year.

To mark our quarter-century, the AA Salt team is committing to 25 acts of kindness in 2025. From charity golf days and sponsored walks to community garden projects and more, we’ve been giving back to the communities that’ve supported us, sharing our success, and helping those in need. We will be sharing our journey with you along the way.

Finally, I want to say a huge thank you…

To our loyal clients, many of you have been with us for years.

To our staff, a unique and dedicated group who make every winter easy and are a joy to work with.

To our subcontractors, who support us year after year in the most extreme circumstances.

Here’s to 25 years of grit, growth and gratitude.

Ben

AA Salt set to waddle with the penguins as it sponsors local charity for a third year https://aasalt.co.uk/aa-salt-set-to-waddle-with-the-penguins-as-it-sponsors-local-charity-for-a-third-year/ https://aasalt.co.uk/aa-salt-set-to-waddle-with-the-penguins-as-it-sponsors-local-charity-for-a-third-year/#respond Fri, 28 Jun 2024 12:06:46 +0000 https://aasalt.co.uk/?p=4610

AA Salt is delighted to support the St Richard’s Hospice’s annual Wild in Art fundraiser for 2024.

We’re a proud sponsor of the Great Waddle of Worcester – a brilliant charity initiative that will see a colony of brightly decorated penguins descend on the city this summer.

We’re sponsoring two penguins this year – an adult in the main trail, which will raise money for the hospice, and a smaller chick that we’ve donated to Bowbrook House School.

Ben Tanner, our Managing Director, said: “As a former pupil, Bowbrook House is a school close to my heart, so we’re delighted to support this fantastic initiative to raise money for a very worthy cause. I’m very proud of the incredible design the pupils and school have come up with, it’s a credit to them all.

“Our partnership has enabled pupils to get creative and design the penguin’s coat for the display. And when the Waddle ends in September 2024, the penguin chick will return to its forever home at the school.

“As a responsible business that’s proud of our Worcester roots, it’s important to us to give back to the communities we serve. The Waddle of Worcester will help attract more visitors to the city this summer and give them lots to see and do while they’re here.

“It will also raise vital funds for St Richard’s Hospice, which does amazing work for people living with progressive illnesses and their families.”

What is the Great Waddle of Worcester?

The event will transform the city into a free, fun art space this summer as a waddle of wonderfully designed penguins slides into residents’ hearts and camera rolls.

Just like previous trails in 2018 and 2021, which we also supported, the St Richard’s Hospice huddle is on a mission to unite the city and create lasting memories along the way. St Richard’s Hospice is an independent charity caring for adults with serious progressive illnesses, improving their quality of life from diagnosis, during treatment to their last days, and supporting those important to them.

Each year, the hospice team supports more than 3,100 patients, family members and bereaved people in Worcestershire.

Organised by Wild in Art, the Great Waddle of Worcester will see 40 large yellow-eyed penguins go on display for eight weeks alongside forty chicks designed by local schools and community groups. Each sculpture is sponsored by a business and designed by a professional artist. They’ll waddle into the city on 22 July and leave on 15 September, when the adult penguins will be auctioned off at a special farewell event to raise funds for the hospice.

The chicks head to their forever homes with schools and groups. For more information, visit www.waddleofworcester.co.uk.

Why do you need professional site clearance?  https://aasalt.co.uk/why-do-you-need-professional-site-clearance/ https://aasalt.co.uk/why-do-you-need-professional-site-clearance/#respond Fri, 31 May 2024 09:02:10 +0000 https://aasalt.co.uk/?p=4718

Maintaining a safe, attractive and functional commercial environment is essential.

Whether you’re preparing for new construction, revitalising an existing landscape or simply maintaining a professional appearance, site clearance services can be a game-changer. However, they often get overlooked.

In this article, we’ll explore the numerous benefits of partnering with a professional site clearance provider like AA Grounds Maintenance, and how our expertise can help you transform your commercial property.

Enhancing safety and mitigating risks

Safety should always be a top priority when managing a commercial property. Overgrown vegetation, fallen trees and accumulated debris can pose significant hazards to your clients, employees and visitors.

At AA Grounds Maintenance, we specialise in identifying and removing these potential risks, creating a safer environment for everyone who uses your property.

Eliminating tripping hazards, unstable structures and other dangers reduces the likelihood of accidents and injuries on your site. It protects the well-being of those who visit your property while helping you avoid potential legal liabilities and costly insurance claims.

Furthermore, our team is well-versed in local environmental and safety regulations. We can ensure your property adheres to these guidelines, helping you avoid fines and maintain compliance with the law. Our expertise provides peace of mind, knowing that your site meets the necessary standards and requirements.

Preparing for future developments

If you’re planning to undertake construction or landscaping projects on your commercial property, site clearance is an essential first step. Removing existing vegetation, debris and other obstacles creates a blank canvas for your future developments.

A cleared site allows you to better visualise your property’s potential and makes it easier to plan and execute your projects. Your contractors can work more efficiently without overgrowth or debris hindering their progress, saving you time and money in the long run.

Moreover, a well-prepared site can increase your property’s value and attractiveness to potential buyers or tenants. A clean, unobstructed space demonstrates that your property is ready for development and can help you attract more interest from prospective investors.

Improving aesthetics and kerb appeal

First impressions matter, and your commercial property’s appearance can significantly impact how your clients, visitors and employees perceive your business. Overgrown vegetation, scattered debris and unkempt grounds can give the impression of neglect and unprofessionalism, which can negatively affect your reputation and bottom line.

We can help you eliminate unsightly elements and transform neglected spaces into visually appealing environments. Removing dead trees, trimming overgrown shrubs and clearing away debris can enhance your property’s aesthetic appeal and create a more inviting atmosphere.

Investing in professional site clearance demonstrates your commitment to maintaining a polished and professional image, which can help you attract and retain clients and employees alike. A well-maintained exterior also improves kerb appeal and reflects your business’s high standards and attention to detail.

Promoting environmental responsibility

As a business owner or site manager, you have a responsibility to minimise your environmental impact and contribute to the health of the ecosystem surrounding your property. Professional site clearance can help you achieve this goal by ensuring proper waste and vegetation disposal.

Our experts have the knowledge and resources to remove debris safely and efficiently, ensuring it’s disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner. We can also help you identify and preserve any protected or endangered plant species on your site, ensuring that your clearance activities comply with environmental regulations. This can enhance your business’s reputation and appeal to eco-conscious clients and customers who value environmentally responsible practices.

Streamlining the clearance process

Attempting to tackle site clearance on your own can be a time-consuming, labour-intensive and potentially dangerous endeavour. Our site clearance team has the expertise, experience and equipment necessary to streamline the process and ensure efficient, thorough results.

Thanks to our in-depth knowledge and investment in state-of-the-art machinery, we can complete the job more quickly and effectively than you could on your own. We can save you time and help you avoid the potential future costs associated with unchecked growth or improper clearance techniques.

Additionally, our team has the skills to identify and address any underlying issues that may not be immediately apparent to the untrained eye. They can spot potential problems, such as soil erosion or drainage issues, and recommend solutions to prevent future complications.

Tailored solutions for your specific needs

Every commercial property is unique, with its own set of challenges, goals and requirements. AA Grounds Maintenance understands this and offers customised solutions tailored to your specific needs.

Whether you’re dealing with a large-scale commercial project or a smaller, more detailed job, our experts can adapt their approach to suit your situation. We’ll take the time to assess your property, listen to your aspirations and develop a plan that aligns with your vision and budget.

Our flexible approach ensures that you receive the most appropriate and effective site clearance services for your circumstances. Working closely with you to understand your needs, we aim to deliver results that exceed your expectations and help you achieve your goals for your commercial property.

When’s the best time of year for field and weed spraying?  https://aasalt.co.uk/whens-the-best-time-of-year-for-field-and-weed-spraying/ https://aasalt.co.uk/whens-the-best-time-of-year-for-field-and-weed-spraying/#respond Tue, 21 May 2024 08:52:39 +0000 https://aasalt.co.uk/?p=4712

Maintaining healthy grounds and lawns is a year-round activity that requires a strategic approach to field and weed spraying. Timely treatments are crucial for controlling unwanted vegetation and promoting lawn health.

In this article, we’ll explore the best times of year for field and weed spraying. We’ll also discuss the benefits of professional lawn care services and how they can help you achieve a lush, weed-free landscape.

Understanding weed growth cycles

To effectively control weeds, it’s essential to understand their growth cycles. Weeds fall into three broad categories: annual, biennial and perennial.

Annual weeds complete their life cycle within one year, germinating from seeds, growing, flowering and producing new seeds before dying.

Biennial weeds have a two-year life cycle. In the first year, they produce leaves and store energy in their roots. In the second year, they flower, produce seeds and then die.

Perennial weeds live for more than two years, reproducing through their seeds and roots. These weeds can be particularly challenging to control as they can regenerate year after year from even small fragments of their organic parts.

How does field and weed spraying help?

Field and weed spraying is an excellent way to keep your lawn’s, driveways and gravel pathways clear. It helps to control weeds, pests and diseases while promoting healthy grass and plant growth. Its timing depends on various factors, including the type of weeds targeted and the crop’s growth stage.

Pre-emergence spraying involves applying herbicides to the soil before weeds emerge. This method is particularly effective for controlling annual weeds, as it prevents them from germinating and competing with crops for nutrients and water. The best time for pre-emergence spraying is in early spring before weeds start to grow. Targeting weeds early helps minimise their impact on lawn health and yield.

Post-emergence spraying targets weeds that have already emerged from the soil. This method is helpful for controlling annual and perennial weeds, as it can effectively kill or suppress actively growing plants. Generally, it’s best to spray when weeds are young and actively growing, as they’re more susceptible to herbicides at this stage.

Different crops have varying tolerance levels to herbicides at various growth stages. It’s crucial to choose herbicides that are safe for your specific crop and apply them at the appropriate growth stage to avoid damage.

Temperature, humidity and wind speed can all affect the herbicides’ effectiveness. Avoid spraying during extreme temperatures, high winds or when rain is expected, as these conditions can reduce the treatment’s efficacy and increase the risk of drift or runoff.

Weed spraying for lawns and grounds

Maintaining a weed-free lawn requires a targeted approach that considers the seasonal growth patterns of different weed species.

Spring is a critical time for weed control, as many winter annual and early spring weeds begin to germinate and grow. Targeting these weeds early can prevent them from establishing and spreading throughout your lawn. Apply a pre-emergence herbicide in early spring to control annual weeds like crabgrass and use a post-emergence herbicide to tackle actively growing broadleaf weeds like dandelions and clover.

As temperatures rise, warm-season annual and perennial weeds become more active. These weeds can quickly spread and compete with your lawn for nutrients and water, leading to a patchy, unhealthy appearance. To control summer weeds, use a post-emergence herbicide that targets specific weed species. Be sure to apply the herbicide when weeds are actively growing and before they seed to maximise its effectiveness.

Autumn is an important time for preparing your lawn for the winter months and targeting perennial weeds. As temperatures cool and rainfall increases, perennial weeds begin to store energy in their roots for the winter. Applying a systemic herbicide during this time can effectively kill these weeds, as it will be transported to the roots along with the plant’s stored energy. Autumn is also an excellent time to address any remaining annual weeds and prevent them from setting seed for the following year.

Weed management strategies

To effectively control weeds, it’s essential to integrate spraying with other lawn care strategies.

Proper mowing, irrigation and fertilisation can help promote a thick, healthy lawn that’s more resistant to weed invasion. Mow your lawn at the appropriate height for your grass species, as cutting too short can weaken the grass and create openings for weeds. Water deeply and frequently to encourage deep root growth and fertilise according to your lawn’s specific needs to promote healthy, vigorous growth.

Hand-pulling or hoeing can be effective for small weed infestations or for targeting weeds in areas where you can’t use herbicides. Timing is crucial, as it’s best to remove weeds before they set seed to prevent further spread.

In addition to active weed control measures, implementing preventive strategies can help minimise weed growth and reduce the need for future treatments. Applying a layer of organic mulch, such as wood chips or bark, around plants and in garden beds can help suppress weed growth by blocking sunlight and preventing weed seeds from germinating.

Planting dense, low-growing groundcovers like phlox, bergenia or rubus can help outcompete weeds and reduce the available space for them to grow. And regularly monitoring your lawn for signs of weed growth and addressing any issues promptly can also help prevent small infestations from becoming more significant problems.

Professional lawn care services

While it’s possible to manage weed control on your own, working with a grounds maintenance specialist like AA Grounds Maintenance can provide numerous benefits for your lawn’s health and appearance.

Our team has the knowledge, expertise and equipment necessary to control weeds and promote healthy grass growth. We can identify specific weed species and select the most appropriate herbicides and application methods for your lawn’s needs.

We can also develop a comprehensive, year-round lawn care plan that addresses weed control alongside other essential maintenance practices.

Adopting a proactive, year-round approach to weed control is essential for maintaining a lush, weed-free landscape. Every lawn is unique, with its own set of challenges and requirements. AA Grounds Maintenance can assess your lawn’s specific needs and develop a customised treatment plan that considers factors such as grass species, soil type and climate. Our tailored approach ensures that your lawn receives the right care at the right time for optimal health and appearance.

So, if you’re interested in learning more about our lawn care services and how we can help, or for a free, no-obligation consultation to discuss your needs, get in touch today.
