There are many advantages to working with a true manufacturing partner invested in your success. They collaborate and provide design suggestions to improve part manufacturability, saving time and reducing costs

Here’s one example of how our dedicated team at Axis Fab partnered with a company to improve a project’s manufacturability and drive cost savings.

Design Changes to Improve Manufacturability

EVRCool approached us with a newmanufacturing partner laser chiller design. Our sheet metal manager worked closely with their engineers to review 3D CAD, providing recommendations to make the parts easier and more cost-effective to produce.

Many aspects made the original design complex, including:

  • 20 separate parts: Each had to fit together perfectly.
  • Tight bends: Many unusually intricate bends increased manufacturing difficulty and expense.

After prototyping and analyzing costs, EVRCool was open to design changes. Our goal was to make the assembly as easy to manufacture as possible and reduce costs while maintaining functionality.

Two Sides of a Successful Partnership

High-volume production and consistency can be challenging when components are complex. By iterating on the design together, we streamlined manufacturability.

Success required both sides.

Our Knoxville fabrication shop was committed to working alongside EVRCool to offer practical solutions. EVRCool was open to guidance and ready to implement suggestions.

Over a two-year partnership, we simplified many parts of the assembly, improving production efficiency and repeatability.

Key Cost-Cutting Changes

Our collaborative approach impacted the manufacturability across multiple areas.

  • We eliminated welding and started bolting parts together with rivets, enabling consistent assembly without specialized welders.
  • We simplified tight bends to reduce manufacturing complexity.
  • We optimized parts for in-house tooling, consolidating production and leaving only one component for subcontracting.

By manufacturing almost every piece under one roof, EVRCool experiences improved efficiency, repeatability, and precise fitment.

Benefits of Partnering With Axis Fab

There are many benefits that come along with working with a full-service fabrication and machine shop.

Being a three-department shop (sheet metal, machining, and welding), Axis Fab brings a wide range of knowledge. We have the skillset to offer expertise across prototyping, iteration, and design optimization.

Our advanced equipment and skilled staff identified efficient and practical solutions early to save time and cost.

Scaling Together

Simplifying the assembly allowed EVRCool to expand production and offer three different sizes of the laser chiller. This opened new markets and allowed them to meet customer demand efficiently.

And our support goes beyond sheet metal fab. For instance, we manage inventory for EVRCool using blanket purchase orders, creating benefits for both sides of the partnership.

Looking Ahead

As EVRCool continues to grow, we look forward to supporting them with scalable, efficient solutions

Choosing a true manufacturing partner fosters collaboration that improves manufacturability and efficiency, reduces costs, and strengthens your business.

Material choice plays a key role in ensuring projects are manufactured efficiently, cost-effectively, and for optimal functionality. When partnering with a material agnostic machining and fabrication shop, customers gain valuable flexibility and expertise.

At Axis Fabrication and Machine, we specialize in working with a wide range of materials, providing expert guidance to reduce turnaround time and cost, and streamlining projects with a single point of contact regardless of project complexity.

Here’s how a material agnostic machining and fabrication shop can benefit your processes and your parts.

Material Expertise That Supports Your Projects

Choosing the right material involves aligning cost and performance with your project’s needs. If we know the most important considerations for your projects, we can support material choices.

Our team at Axis Fab asks the right questions to guide your decisions:

  • Does your part need to be corrosion-resistant?
  • Are you prioritizing upfront material cost-effectiveness or long-term maintenance cost-effectiveness?
  • What kind of stress will the part endure?
  • Do any industry standards or certifications need to be met?
  • Will the part be used indoors or outdoors?
  • Is surface finish or appearance important?

When we don’t think the material choice and customer priorities are aligned, we provide alternatives and explain the trade-offs.

For example, stainless steel is sometimes the best choice because it doesn’t require powder coating or painting, reducing costs in the long run. Similarly, aluminum might seem ideal because it’s lightweight, but our expertise allows us to evaluate whether it will meet durability requirements or if a different material would be a better fit.

By distinguishing between “Can we make this?” and “Should we make this?”, we help customers make informed decisions to improve functionality and optimize cost.

Experience Across a Wide Range of Materials

As a fabrication and machine shop with advanced capabilities, we handle everything from common metals and plastics to specialized, high-performance materials. Our team regularly works with:

  • Plastics machining and fabrication shop
  • Aluminum
  • Stainless steel
  • Tool steel
  • Inconel
  • Titanium

Thanks to our laser cutting services and our new, non-reflective fiber lasers, we also work with copper and brass.

At Axis Fab, our deep expertise supports our understanding of the nuances of programming and tooling for each material. This allows us to support a wide range of industries, including energy, nuclear, appliances, recreation, and transportation, with our sheet metal fab and machining departments.

For specialized materials, we have established relationships with suppliers to source materials cost-effectively, reducing your project prices.

Research and Development for Material Innovation

When a project requires a new or uncommon material, our machining and fabrication shop invests in research and testing to prepare the team.

Our workflows are designed to accommodate a wide range of materials. For example, when machining unique plastics, we schedule and configure setups ahead of time to maintain efficiency and quality in our Knoxville machine shop

Upfront communication is essential, keeping projects on track even when manufacturing challenging or uncommon materials.

Streamlined Support With Our Machining and Fabrication Shop

Working with a material agnostic machining and fabrication shop means you can have one trusted partner for your entire project. Our experience across materials allows us to:

  • Make recommendations that save you time and money
  • Support multiple materials within a single part or assembly
  • Provide a consistent point of contact from RFQ to final delivery

Request a quote today to see how partnering with a material agnostic shop can simplify your projects and improve results.

When scaling from prototype to production, there’s real value in working with a trustworthy manufacturing partner willing to collaborate through every step of the process.

At Axis Fabrication and Machine, we build long-term relationships with customers to support them as they scale, often saving them time and money.

Here’s how we support Axis Fab customers from concept all the way to part production.

Prototyping Processes Made Easy

Scaling from prototype to production can bring challenges. But we’re here to help solve them. When we’re brought a part concept, whether it’s a fully developed CAD model, a hand sketch on a napkin, or a physical model built in a garage, we’re ready to help turn your idea into a manufacturable part.

And we really mean that. One customer who came to us with a wooden model they built themselves ended up being one of our biggest customers for a number of years.

Once we receive a request for quote, we move forward with a customer conversation to collaborate and determine the best approach for the part and its future production. We love a call where the customer can share their screen to talk us through their ideas, or even an in-person visit to our Knoxville machine shop

Quality Requests for Quotes Set the Stage

prototype to productionWhen you’re ready to prototype, providing detailed information in your request for quote makes all the difference. The more we understand upfront, the better, so we’ll be able to ask the important questions early and get started on manufacturing solutions for your parts as soon as possible.

Clear prints, models, tolerances, and functional requirements help us move efficiently and avoid surprises later in the process.

Strategic, Streamlined Communication

During prototyping, our team focuses on understanding what truly matters. We like to know the anticipated future of the part. Is it one of ten? One of 500?

To protect the integrity of the part, we also discuss functionality, durability, tolerances, and end-use requirements.

Often, the next step involves marking up prints and sharing recommendations with the customer. This back-and-forth collaboration typically involves two to four conversations over a one-week to one-month timeframe, depending on the project’s complexity. We’ve found that when we’re able to speak directly with a customer’s engineer, the process can move even faster.

Throughout the process, our goal is to ensure every customer feels supported and confident when moving toward production.

One Point of Contact

When scaling a part, the most efficient approach is working with a single manufacturer. At Axis Fab, customers have one clear point of contact prepared to answer questions, review details, and guide decisions because we never want a customer to be confused or unsure.

One Fabrication and Machine Shop for All Your Scaling Needs

The benefits of a long-term partnership with Axis Fab include:

Trust: Long-standing relationships build confidence. When challenges arise, we work side-by-side with customers to find solutions.

Quicker Turnaround: Familiarity with our partners and their expectations allows us to move more efficiently.

Cost Savings: When we get to know a customer and their project needs, we’re able to provide suggestions about material choices and machining processes that lead to potential cost-savings. This is true across our precision sheet metal shop’s capabilities

Maintaining Consistency and Quality as You Scale From Prototype to Production

As production volumes increase, maintaining consistency and quality becomes even more crucial. At Axis Fab, we lean on a dedicated Quality Manager and a structured Quality Manual to ensure every part meets requirements.

Each job follows defined checkpoints. First pieces undergo First Article Inspection, and quality checks are performed throughout the manufacturing process.

Our CAD Manager, department managers, and Quality Manager are all involved in the inspection process to ensure accuracy, consistency, and customer satisfaction.

Our team also provides inspection reports, dimensional data, and sample first pieces when requested by a customer, giving confidence that what we produce matches their print and model exactly.

Customers count on Axis Fabrication and Machine to deliver components that meet specifications, stay on schedule, and perform as intended. Inspection and quality control are built into every step of the manufacturing process at our fabrication and machine shop. In-process quality checks reduce rework, shorten lead times, and ensure parts are made right the first time.

Here’s how we keep quality at the center of everything we do at Axis Fab.

Quality Our Customers Can Rely On

Our Knoxville machine shop is ISO 9001:2015 certified, and our quality system is supported by a detailed quality manual that defines how parts are inspected, documented, and approved.

inspection and quality controWe use multiple inspection methods depending on the part and tolerance, including:

  • Electronic inspection tools
  • CMM inspection for tight tolerances and repeatability
  • Detailed measurement of small and complex parts

This layered approach ensures accuracy and consistency across every job.

Checking Parts Early to Prevent Rework and Delays

One of the most important ways we protect quality and your timeline is by checking the first part of every batch. By identifying issues early, we avoid discovering problems at the end of a job and having to backtrack. This leads to more efficient workflows, shorter lead times, and reliable results.

For two of our biggest customers, we’ve created approved samples that have been signed off ahead of production. The first part of each run is brought into our quality room and inspected against that sample before continuing production.

This process:

  • Prevents running large quantities of incorrect parts
  • Reduces costly rework
  • Keeps production schedules on track

This same first-inspection approach is used across our full-service shop, including for laser cutting services and press brake operations.

In-Process Inspections Throughout Production

Inspection at Axis Fab doesn’t stop after the first part.

Parts are checked throughout the manufacturing process, after laser cutting, during forming, and as assemblies move through the shop. With a dedicated Quality Department, inspections are consistent and continuous.

The People Behind Our Quality

Quality is built into the culture at Axis Fab. Our team is invested in inspection and quality control at every level. We look for this mindset during the hiring process and prioritize people who value doing the right thing and supporting their teammates.

This culture fosters collaboration on the shop floor. Team members regularly ask questions, share insights, and seek second opinions to ensure parts meet expectations.

Precision Across All Departments

Inspection and quality control are not limited to one department; they’re built into every operation.

Our experienced craftsmen take pride in their work and routinely check their own parts as they go. Every department is built for precision:

  • Sheet metal parts are inspected using certified calipers, with photographic verification when tolerances allow. We can routinely hold tolerances of +/-0.010″, and can achieve tighter tolerances when required.
  • Welding inspections include visual checks and detailed tape-measure verification.

Quality Standards That Extend to Our Vendors

Our quality standards extend beyond our walls.

Axis Fab holds vendors to the same expectations we set internally by tracking vendor defects and on-time delivery performance.

If a part goes out for secondary services such as powder coating, it must return to our shop for inspection before shipping. Parts are never sent directly from a coater to the customer without in-house verification.

Documentation That Prevents Repeat Issues

While we pride ourselves on getting parts right the first time, we also focus on ensuring issues are never repeated.

At Axis Fab, our system is set up so that:

  • Parts cannot ship until final inspection is completed and signed off
  • Jobs cannot be finalized without documented approval
  • Non-conformances are logged and tracked

If an issue is identified, a revision change is documented so that the same problem is prevented if the part is quoted again. We are currently working to integrate this tracking directly into our ERP system to streamline processes further.

Continuous improvement is ongoing, and we are always evaluating opportunities to strengthen our inspection and quality control systems.

Investing in the Future of Inspection and Quality Control

As part of our new facility expansion, Axis Fab is investing in upgraded quality equipment and capabilities.

Our new building will include a larger CMM with a 48” x 60” table, allowing us to:

  • Measure larger parts with greater accuracy
  • Build inspection programs directly from customer models
  • Reuse inspection programs for repeat production

We continue to invest in equipment, systems, and people to meet increasing quality demands and support long-term customer success.

Customer Satisfaction Comes First

Customer surveys consistently show that quality is one of Axis Fab’s greatest strengths. Customers don’t question the quality when they work with us, and if something ever does go wrong, they know it will be addressed immediately.

When you need quality assurance you can count on, trust Axis Fab’s proven processes to deliver parts made right the first time.

At Axis Fab, two things drive everything we do: our customers and our commitment to continuous improvement. Our fabrication and machine shop is always looking ahead. We are consistently investing in top-of-the-line machinery, developing our employees, and refining our manufacturing approach. This forward-thinking mindset ensures that we remain a strong partner today and for years to come.

By investing in our company’s future, we help our customers achieve better results, including faster lead times, greater precision, and more reliable outcomes. But being future-focused goes beyond investing in equipment; it means embracing change, staying optimistic, and building a team that has the same ambition. Here’s how having this philosophy benefits our partners.

Proof That Taking Risks Is Necessary For Success

Axis Fab

When it comes to purchasing new equipment, Axis Fab takes a balanced approach, combining thoughtful analysis with the confidence to take risks. We bet on ourselves and invest in machines that position us to meet future customer demand, even before the work arrives.

Although this tactic almost always pays off, sometimes these risks lead to learning experiences. But this has taught us how to be more strategic decision-makers when adding to our fleet of equipment

Making decisions is a collaborative effort at our shop. Involving our employees, including our fabricators and machinists, in the decision-making process is valuable because they are the ones on the shop floor working on customer parts each day.

The People Behind The Process

At Axis Fabrication and Machine, technology is only half the equation. The people on our shop floor make all the difference. This is why we don’t just invest in equipment; we invest in skilled CNC machinists, welders, and fabricators to run this equipment.

Our employees understand the value of both teaching and being teachable. Ongoing training and collaboration are built into our culture at Axis Fab, ensuring every team member has the tools and knowledge to deliver the precision and quality our customers expect. But not everything can be taught. When hiring, we look for people who align with our positive, upbeat culture: people who have the right attitude and work ethic to fit in on our shop floor.

More than half of our employees have been with us for over a decade, and their expertise is the backbone of our success. At the same time, we’re welcoming a new generation of talent eager to work with new technology. Their passion for the latest equipment continues to influence our investments in advanced machinery, ensuring we remain a competitive, future-ready partner.

Modern Equipment, Modern Solutions

Our full-service shop is powered by top-of-the-line machinery from trusted names like Mazak and Trumpf, including:

Adding the Trumpf robotic press brake was a major milestone for our team and our customers. Before automation, bending heavy-gauge parts was labor-intensive and time-consuming. Today, our robotic press brake dramatically streamlines our sheet metal solutions.

This move toward automation is just the beginning. We continue to invest in 5-axis machining and other advanced technologies that enhance precision, reduce bottlenecks, and give us more flexibility to meet customer needs.

One great example: when we purchased our first 5-axis machine, we didn’t have work lined up for it yet. Within nine months, the demand grew enough that we needed another one. That investment has more than paid off, allowing us to provide faster, more complex machining solutions.

The Future Is Bright

When it comes to investing in the future of our company, we consider many things, including the market, opportunities, customer needs, and what new capabilities already align with the work we do.

Our investment in a new, larger building is a testament to where we plan to take Axis Fab in the coming months. The increased space will allow us to add more equipment to our lineup, increase material storage, and increase both capacity and capabilities to improve results for our customers.

At Axis Fab, modern manufacturing is more than machinery. It’s about mindset, culture, and collaboration. When you partner with us, you’re choosing a team that’s optimistic about the future and determined to invest in yours.

We’re proud to be future-focused and customer-driven, continually improving our technology, processes, and people to deliver the highest quality work possible.

If you’re looking for a manufacturing partner committed to your long-term success, request a quote today.

At Axis Fab, our focus is on helping customers build better parts and supporting their needs. Drawing on decades of experience, our team partners with manufacturers to identify opportunities for efficiency, reliability, and cost reduction, always keeping the customer’s goals at the forefront.

Whenever possible, we provide advice on process and material choice to ensure customers are getting the best solution possible while achieving their project goals. Here is how we helped an Axis Fab partner save almost $45,000 and 3 weeks of lead time with one simple suggestion.

Open Communication Leads To Smart Solutions

Material ChoiceIn a recent transmission manufacturing project with one of our customers, the initial plan was to use A2 tool steel for the part. Although A2 tool steel provided the necessary wear resistance, achieving this performance required through-hardening. This heat-treating process enhances wear properties but introduces dimensional growth, often requiring parts to be remachined post-treatment.

Before moving forward, we clarified the customer’s goals by asking thoughtful questions and focusing on their priorities. Through our conversations, we learned that wear resistance was the primary concern, allowing us to identify a more cost-effective solution.

The Material Choice That Made All The Difference

Our extensive material experience at Axis Fab allowed us to recommend a different material that would provide the necessary wear resistance while simplifying processing and reducing cost. The new material, 8620, did not require through-hardening, eliminating a time-consuming step.

While through-hardening provides the necessary hardness and strength, the rapid temperature changes during treatment can cause dimensional changes that affect tolerances, requiring post-process machining. Case hardening achieves the same wear resistance by hardening a thin outer layer, leaving the part’s core dimensions unaffected. This process checked all the boxes for our customer, yielding no dimensional growth issues and no post-processing work. As a result, the case-hardened parts were ready to ship following heat treatment.

This collaborative approach reduced total lead time by a whopping 3 weeks and saved $44,939 in processing costs. The customer’s engineering team later applied this insight to other projects, which we consider the true measure of success.

Material Choice Matters

Engineers and manufacturers understand that the cost of a material goes beyond its price per pound. For instance, while carbon steel may seem economical at first, downstream processes such as chromating or powder coating can quickly add cost. In some cases, stainless steel, though more expensive upfront, can eliminate secondary operations and ultimately prove more cost-effective.

By talking through different materials and processes together, we’re often able to find solutions that improve performance and reduce cost.

At Axis Fab, We Know Every Dollar and Day Counts

Every dollar and day saved on this project came from eliminating the need to remachine parts after processing. By collaborating closely with the customer and recommending an alternative material, we helped them avoid nearly $45,000 in additional costs. At our precision machine shop, we partner with our customers, sharing insights built from decades of machining and fabrication experience.

Whether you’re deciding between laser cutting or punch press, evaluating material options or looking to save time and money by leveraging 5-axis machining, our Knoxville machine shop can help identify the most efficient, cost-effective approach for your project.
