There are kids who love to read and then there are kids who would rather clean their rooms, empty the dishwasher, reorganize the garage, or stare silently at a wall–ANYTHING other than pick up a book.

For many of our students, reading has become a chore—an impossible task that some mysterious group of people apparently does for fun. Whatever the reason holding a student back, I am fond of saying that nobody hates to read; we just have to find the thing they love to read about.

The problem is that school has a habit of changing the flavor of the purpose of reading.

Students increasingly read because they have to. They read textbooks, assignments, directions, test passages, primary sources and research. Reading becomes something followed by questions, something graded, something timed, something measured.

That work is important. However, at home we have an opportunity to protect another purpose for reading—arguably an even more important one:

I read because I want to know something.

I read because it is interesting.

I read because I love a good story.

This is particularly important for students who receive special education support. Difficulty with reading shouldn’t mean that virtually every encounter with text becomes practice, intervention or assessment.

Reading doesn’t always have to be a job.

Sometimes it should be as interesting as a conversation with a good friend, as exciting as a playoff game, or as informative as their best teacher.

Research supports the importance of getting kids to this point. Reading enjoyment, motivation and engagement are associated with reading achievement, and students who enjoy reading are more likely to actually do it. That creates something wonderfully uncomplicated: more opportunities to become better readers.

So how do we get them there?

Here are five places to start.

1. Let Them Read What They Actually Like

We need to broaden our definition of “worthwhile” reading.

A child who doesn’t want the novel we put in front of them may happily spend forty-five minutes reading about the Knicks, World War II, Taylor Swift, Minecraft, cars, sharks or the history of sneakers.

That’s reading.

So are:

  • graphic novels and manga
  • sports articles
  • biographies
  • fantasy and science fiction
  • magazines
  • cookbooks
  • gaming guides
  • online articles
  • books about fashion, animals, celebrities, science or history
  • audiobooks paired with print or ebooks

Our mission is to find the doorway into reading, not dictate which doorway is right and which one is unacceptable.

This also means that recreational reading doesn’t always need to be restricted to a student’s assessed reading level. Reading levels can be extraordinarily useful instructional tools, but they don’t need to become fences around a child’s curiosity.

A student may struggle to independently decode a book about ancient Rome while being completely fascinated by ancient Rome. An audiobook, graphic novel or accessible article can allow that student to participate in ideas that match their intellectual interests even when the mechanics of reading are difficult.

Choice matters. Interest matters. Accessibility matters.

Research on reading motivation repeatedly points toward choice, relevance, competence and autonomy as important ingredients.

If the goal is to create a reader, sometimes the best place to begin is simply asking:

“What do you actually want to know about?”

2. Not Every Book Needs a Quiz

Parents naturally want to know whether their child understood what they read.

Teachers do too. It’s practically an occupational hazard.

So we ask:

“What was the main idea?”

“Who were the characters?”

“What happened in Chapter 4?”

Those are perfectly reasonable questions in the right context. The problem comes when every reading experience starts to feel like someone is waiting around the corner with a comprehension assessment.

Imagine if every time you finished watching something on Netflix, someone appeared with a clipboard and asked you to identify the central conflict and provide three pieces of supporting evidence.

You might stop watching Netflix.

Recreational reading needs room to be recreational.

Instead, try the kinds of questions real readers ask each other:

“Anything interesting happen?”

“Is it actually good?”

“Would I like it?”

“Tell me something you learned.”

Or—and this one can be difficult—

don’t ask anything at all.

Let them read.

Intrinsic motivation, perceived competence, value and engagement all matter to adolescent reading. There absolutely remains a place for comprehension questions, written responses and careful analysis, particularly with assigned reading.

But there is a balance to find.

Sometimes a book can just be a book.

3. Help Them Find Their Rabbit Hole

One of the most powerful ways into reading is curiosity.

Kids are remarkably good at becoming experts in things adults never assigned them. Give a sufficiently interested twelve-year-old enough time and internet access and they may suddenly know the complete history of an NBA franchise, every variation of a Marvel character, the engineering specifications of the Titanic or enough obscure facts about sharks to make you reconsider going into the ocean.

Use that.

Help them go down the rabbit hole.

Research-based approaches such as Concept-Oriented Reading Instruction deliberately connect reading with curiosity, interesting content, knowledge goals, choice and multiple kinds of texts.

At home, it might look something like this:

Titanic → article → documentary → survivor account → historical fiction → nonfiction book

Basketball → statistics → player biography → sports journalism → book

Marvel → comics → character history → mythology → graphic novel → novel

Notice that the pathway doesn’t necessarily begin with a traditional book.

That’s okay.

We aren’t trying to manufacture the appearance of reading. We’re trying to build the habits of a curious person.

One source leads to another. One question produces three more questions. An article leads to a video, which leads to a biography, which leads to a book that a child never would have touched if we had simply handed it to them and said, “You need to read twenty minutes tonight.”

Don’t worry too much about whether the first stop looks sufficiently “academic.”

Follow curiosity.

Let them become curiouser and curiouser until they find their Wonderland at the bottom of the rabbit hole.

4. Make Reading Social

We have a strange stereotype of “the reader.”

The bookworm.

Alone in the library. Not playing at recess. Perhaps cloistered under a tree while everyone else explores the world.

Personally, I love to read. I’ve also fallen out of many trees, and recess was probably my best subject in middle school—perhaps second only to Lunch.

Reading doesn’t have to be solitary.

In fact, making reading social can be particularly powerful for struggling readers because it transforms reading from an individual performance into a shared experience.

Families can:

  • listen to an audiobook together in the car
  • read the same graphic novel
  • recommend articles to one another
  • visit the library or bookstore together
  • talk about books over dinner
  • watch the movie after reading the book
  • text their child an interesting article
  • let siblings recommend books
  • ask a librarian for recommendations based on a child’s interests

Research with struggling middle school readers has found that relationships with other people can influence students’ motivation to obtain and read books. Other research similarly points toward the importance of support from parents and peers.

This doesn’t mean creating mandatory Berman Family Book Club meetings every Thursday at 7:00 complete with agendas and discussion questions.

It can be much simpler.

“I saw this and thought you’d like it.”

That’s enough.

Because now reading isn’t something adults are making a child do.

It’s something people share.

5. Make It Safe to Be a Reader

For families of students receiving special education services, this may be the most important practice.

Imagine struggling with something all day at school and then being told you need to do more of it at home.

Imagine that every mistake gets corrected.

Imagine watching a sibling breeze through something that takes you three times as long.

Eventually, even something interesting can start to feel like a place where you aren’t successful.

Motivation research identifies perceived competence alongside autonomy and relationships as important conditions supporting motivation. Appropriate texts, useful strategies and supportive feedback can help students experience themselves as capable readers.

So recreational reading should not become another place to fail.

Try to avoid:

  • comparing siblings’ reading levels
  • constantly correcting oral reading
  • requiring every book to be finished
  • treating easier books as “baby books”
  • removing graphic novels because they aren’t “real reading”
  • using reading as punishment
  • requiring a written response after every recreational reading experience

Instead, give children permission to behave like actual adult readers.

They can dislike books.

They can quit books.

They can reread books.

They can choose something easy.

They can choose something ridiculous.

They can read the same author twelve times.

They can decide fifty pages into a book that it simply isn’t for them.

“Didn’t like it? It happens to me all the time. Let’s find another one.”

That isn’t giving up on reading.

That’s teaching them how readers actually read.

Our Goal Is a Reader Who Doesn’t Need Us

School can teach students decoding, comprehension, vocabulary, analysis and research. Teachers can provide intervention, explicit instruction, accommodations and carefully selected texts.

All of those things matter.

But ultimately, we want something deeper than a student who successfully completes reading assignments.

We want a reader.

We want a young person who knows that when they are curious, confused, fascinated, bored, inspired or simply looking for a good story, reading is one of the things they can choose to do.

For students receiving special education services, developing that identity can be especially powerful.

Reading should not belong exclusively to intervention periods, assessments and ELA classrooms.

It belongs on the couch.

It belongs on airplanes and in the backseat of the car.

It belongs at the beach, on the subway, in a waiting room, on a phone, through headphones and underneath the blankets when they were definitely supposed to be asleep twenty minutes ago.

Reading belongs with the fun and meaningful parts of life.

If we want children to become lifelong readers, perhaps that’s where we need to put it back.

Time is one of the most valuable resources we have in the classroom. When we are pressed for time, unfortunately, it seems that the best of our practices get sacrificed so that we can get the content and skills instruction across…but we miss out on the most formative, engaging, and constructivist practices the really make learning live. Discussions get shortened, small groups disappear, individual conferences evaporate, labs are unfinished, and individual interventions become a wish rather than a must.

One practical approach to solving the conundrum of limited time is using “Flipped Learning”, however like with all practices it can have a powerful impact when used thoughtfully and can fail miserably when approached without deliberate expectations. When done correctly, the flipped model shifts moving some information acquisition to outside of class time so that student activities can be expanded to include practices that maximize the impact of face-to-face time in the classroom. However, when done poorly it becomes “extra homework” and makes assumptions about home environments, individual motivation, or asks students to move beyond the zone of proximal development on their own without the more knowledgable other.

In general, the goal is not to move all lessons to homework but rather to carefully flip the right minutes to change the landscape of a lesson.

Pros and Cons

Flipped learning can potentially create meaningful time for:

  • teacher feeback
  • small-group activities
  • discussions
  • collaborative problem solving
  • individual conferences
  • labs/simulations/virtual experiences
  • retrieval or metacognitive practice
  • formative assessments
  • intervention and enrichment

and many other practices that teachers dream they could take advantage of but don’t…or can’t. However, there are potential downsides as well. A poorly implemented flipped classroom can occur when:

  • students do not complete the preparation materials
  • the flip is internet reliant and service is unavailable
  • assignments become “additional” rather than “redistributed”
  • students are expected to learn material that is way too difficult for them
  • teachers repeat the entirely of the flipped lesson in class
  • technology is used to replace the teacher

The research is clear that implementation of the flipped learning approach is the difference maker in its success towards positive results.

Dos, and Don’ts

A few starter tips that can help make the flipped classroom succeed:

  • Start with 5-10 minutes lessons at home
  • Use materials you already have or are familiar with
  • Ask students to preview information father than master information
  • Decide in advance how you will use the reclaimed time
  • Provide a pathway for students who missed the flipped activity to catch up
  • Check for understanding before moving forward

However, but sure to avoid:

  • Flipping every lesson
  • Assigning long videos
  • Forcing yourself to become a content creator
  • Assuming that watching is the same as learning
  • Excluding students from lessons
  • Turning 45 minute periods into 45 minutes of homework

Five Things To Get Started Easily

1. The 5-10 Minute Flip

Move 5-10 minutes of something that students can easily and meaningfully engage in without you. Use those 5-10 minutes deliberately during class time, such as those listed above. The key questions to ask in your planning is “Can the students gather a preliminary understanding without me and how will I deepen that with the time I’ve reclaimed?”

2. Flipped Learning Does Not Require Tech

A flipped lesson might include a one page reading, understanding a diagram, exploring a map, becoming familiar with new vocabulary, following a long a worked examples, analyzing a photograph, reviewing a primary source. Advanced tech is not necessarily required. Deliberate decisions on materials is.

3. Maintain the Focus on Preview Not Self-Teaching

Ask students to “encounter” information rather than mastering it but give them concrete deliverable things to bring with them. Ask them to notice things, take notes on some, generate questions, or list things that are confusing. Sometimes, it may be a replacement for an entire concept, but you can flip a classroom just as well with some takeaways to launch an activity.

4. Use What Already Exists

You don’t need to create or re-create materials for your flip. If there’s a video you usually have shown in class, use that. If there was a handout you intended to use that students can navigate without, that’s a strong resource. Media resources are often good choices when coupled with expectations. Provide slides that you might have gone through. If you do intend to record something keep it simple and brief. Consider what you’ve already been using and decide if students can do it on their own.

5. Protect the Things That Need a Classroom

The purpose of flipping the classroom is not to reduce your interaction with students–it is to increase your efficacy with them in a minimum amount of time. In a flipped model you are creating opportunities for high impact practices. Protect these practices with your professional life!

  • Difficult explanations
  • Teacher modeling
  • Feedback
  • Discussions
  • Collaborative Work
  • Small Groups
  • Intervention and Enrichment
  • Labs
  • Writing Workshops
  • Projects
  • Building relationships

What am I doing that students can encounter without me successfully?

What valuable practice don’t I have enough time for that I can implement in the reclaimed time?

How much time do I need and how can I teach the routine?

Give flipped classroom a deliberate and thoughtful shot. It can help you reclaim your time and get far more out of your practice than you thought.

Years ago, Staples had a commercial for the start of the school year that always seemed to come too early in the summer; if you’re of a certain age, you’ll remember it. A father, dancing through the aisles of the store with a cart buying school supplies while “It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year” played…his children walking solemnly behind him. 

For me, even as a kid, the start of school was always exciting in its way: new supplies, new schedules, new teachers, new routines. As a parent, it also includes figuring out when we all need to get up to get to school on time. The transition is exciting and fun, if not somewhat sad that all the free time is over. In some ways its the end of a story and in others it is the origin story of a new adventure and the opportunity to be the hero of a new story.



For students who receive learning supports, accommodations, testing supports, or other educational services, there is another transition happening at the same time. As students get older, we ask them to manage more—more teachers, more assignments, more tests, more projects, more activities, (hopefully) more friendships, (certainly) more family responsibilities, and their own learning needs. At almost precisely the same moment that everything becomes more complicated, adults start telling them they need to become more independent.

We expect, all too often, that the independence we expect comes naturally, like a growth spurt. A student has their birthday and CLICK, they are suddenly capable of more.

Independence, like most other aspects of maturity, isn’t a switch. It develops through a long series of successes and failures. Students make good plans and bad ones. They remember things and forget them. They ask for help at the right time and, occasionally, after the proverbial building is already on fire.

This is the learning process, and everyone learns more from failure than from success.

Research on organizational interventions supports explicitly teaching skills like planning, time management, organization, and homework management rather than simply expecting students to figure them out. In other words, telling a student to “be more organized” isn’t much of an intervention. If organization is a collection of skills, we actually have to teach those skills.

So what can families do to support–truly any student–those especially at risk for struggling through these increased demands?

Look no further than the pages of adventure and fantasy for good lessons on this. By adopting these steps, you can support your student to being the hero of their own story and having a super year—no matter what struggles or successes they have.
 

1. Be Like Iron Man: Know Your Tools

Tony Stark was brilliant before he puts on the Iron Man armor. The suit doesn’t make him smarter or more talented. It gives him tools that allow him to do things he couldn’t do as effectively without it. Without the armor, Tony is a genius, he’s charming, he’s resourceful, and he’s incredibly wealthy. With the suit all those skills are filtered into flight, strength, AI analysis, and allows him to shoot lasers or fly into space. The suit augments his abilities and gives him the leg up to contend with heavy hitters like Thor.

I think this is a useful way to understand accommodations.

Extended time, reduced-distraction settings, assistive technology, directions broken into manageable steps, organizational check-ins, and other supports aren’t designed to make the work easier. They address barriers that might prevent a student from accessing the work or demonstrating what they know.

But simply knowing that you have supports isn’t enough. Understanding when, how, and why to use those supports to balance your talents, abilities and struggles is key.

There is a difference between:

“I get extended time.”

and:

“I sometimes need additional time to organize my thinking and finish my responses.”

Is similar to Tony Stark knowing he needed to invent the armor in the first place to escape his captors.

The first student knows something about their educational program. The second is beginning to understand themselves as a learner.

Families can help by asking: What does this support help you do? When does it help? How do you know when you need it?

Eventually, we want students to move from having accommodations, to understanding them, to taking greater ownership of using them appropriately.

Iron Man knows what’s in the suit.

Our students should know what’s in theirs.

2. Be Like Hermione: Use Your Voice To Succeed

Hermione Granger is usually one of the most prepared people at Hogwarts. She’s willing to raise her hand when she knows and will find out the information she needs to move forward.

Again.

And again.

And again.

There’s an important lesson there. Being capable doesn’t mean staying silent when you need information or help.

“Self-advocacy” sounds complicated, but it often begins with very ordinary sentences:

“Could you explain that another way?”

“I’m not sure where to start.”

“I think I’m getting behind. What should I prioritize?”

The student recognizes that something isn’t working, identifies what they need, and communicates that need. This is the start of the kind of self-advocacy that serves kids their whole lives—and leads them to being the Minister of Magic someday.

Some students naturally know what to say. Others need to practice it. Families can rehearse these conversations before they’re necessary. A student might practice a question with a parent before approaching a teacher, and eventually handle routine communication independently while knowing that adult support remains available when it’s actually needed.

Confidence doesn’t come from suddenly knowing what to say in a stressful situation. It comes from having practiced beforehand and with support from parents in every setting from asking for help on a project to getting a time turner to defeat He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named.

3. Be Like Batman: Prepare Before the Crisis

Whenever someone asks who can beat Batman, there’s always some nerd who needs the qualifier “With or without prep time”. All Marysue arguments about Batman aside, being able to outthink the next situation is what makes him formidable as a mortal against the likes of Darkseid.

If large projects consistently become overwhelming, don’t wait until the night before they’re due to break them into smaller pieces. If a reduced-distraction environment helps with testing, don’t wait for the biggest test of the year to become comfortable using it. If an organizational check-in helps, don’t wait until there are six missing assignments.

Supports work best when they become familiar tools rather than emergency procedures. Once students know what they are, they need to know when to use them, how to use them, and where to get them.

We want students moving away from:

“I’ll try without the support first and use it if things go badly.”

Toward:

“I know which conditions help me do my best work.”

Students need to know what supports are available, why they exist, when they’re useful, and how to access them. This is their utility belt, full of all the forward thinking gadgets they need to overcome the big bad guy. They need to practice in the Batcave, at their desk, and in the classroom to ensure that they are the best in the world when the situation arises–like The Dark Knight.

Practice the strategy before the pressure.

Don’t wait for the Bat-Signal to prepare for the villains.

4. Remember: You Are Not Multiple Man

Jamie Madrox, Marvel’s Multiple Man, can create multiple versions of himself. He can be in several places, a fully formed and autonomous copy of himself, and later reabsorb that copy and maintain memories of everything the dupe did. Ah, to be a The Multiple Man as a student.

One version could go to practice. Another could study for tomorrow’s test. A third could start Friday’s essay. Another could attend the family event. And presumably one could stay on the couch playing video games. Then you gather yourself together and you had the best, most productive day ever.

Alas, even the most organized of us can only be in one place at a time. Task paralysis and feeling overwhelmed by the size of a project are very real and sometimes, our students have no idea how to express it.

There is only one of them, and until we can figure out how to photocopy ourselves, families need to move beyond:

“What homework do you have tonight?”

and start asking:

“Where does this week get tight?”

Students aren’t just managing homework. They’re managing tests, projects, activities, family commitments, friendships, sleep, and downtime—all within the same finite number of hours.

Once a week, spend five or ten minutes looking at the whole picture. Where are responsibilities competing for time? What needs to start earlier? Where might help be needed?

And then ask the most important question:

“What do you think your plan should be?”

If adults identify every conflict, create the schedule, break down every assignment, and issue every reminder, we may have created an excellent plan but we haven’t necessarily taught the student to plan. It’s the old “teach a man to fish” situation.

The student needs to increasingly become the planner, not simply the person following somebody else’s plan.

5. Learn From Spider-Man: Make Room for More Than School

Few superheroes have worse work-life balance than Peter Parker. Do I go to eat at Aunt May’s or stop Dr. Octopus from robbing the bank? Should I see Mary Jane’s play or do I save the mayor from Green Goblin? Am I Peter…or am I Spidey?

Peter’s problem usually isn’t that he doesn’t care enough. Too many things that genuinely matter are competing for the same limited time.

That should sound familiar, especially to Middle and High School students.

Students are learners, but they’re still children. They have to prioritize life beyond their assignments. Sleep matters. Friendships matter. Exercise, hobbies, family, sports, community activities, and opportunities to decompress matter.

Those things aren’t prizes students earn after completing school. They’re parts of growing up emotionally, academically, and physically.

The mantra of “school first, then squeeze everything else into whatever time remains” will fail the child in the end.

Instead: How do I manage my responsibilities so they can coexist and I don’t burn out?

That might mean studying Wednesday because practice is Thursday, or starting a project Friday because there are plans Saturday.

That’s not avoiding responsibility.

That’s learning to manage responsibility.

The Real Superpower: Supported Independence

There is one more piece, and this one is for the adults.

We’re usually better at solving children’s problems than they are. We can create the plan, send the email, remember the deadline, and organize the materials faster.

That doesn’t always mean we should.

Instead of “Did you finish everything?” ask, “What’s your plan?” Instead of “Why didn’t you ask for help?” ask, “How will you know when you need help next time?” And before saying “Let me fix this,” try “What do you think the next step should be?”

Every one of these questions creates a small opportunity to think, plan, problem-solve, and make decisions. Over time, our role changes too. At first, we may be managers. We organize, remind, communicate, and solve. Then we become coaches. We ask questions, practice strategies, and help students develop their own plans.

Eventually, we become consultants. Students increasingly take the lead while knowing we’re still available when they genuinely need us. This progression isn’t perfectly linear. Students will succeed, fail, move forward, and occasionally need us to step back in.

That’s okay. The more we become the safety net, the sooner our acrobatic heroes learn to fly without us.

Our job isn’t to suddenly remove support in the name of independence. It’s to gradually change where we stand—sometimes in front, showing them how; sometimes beside them, helping them practice; and eventually a few steps behind, still available but giving them enough room to discover what they can do for themselves.

The goal isn’t immediate independence. It’s increasing independence.

No capes required.

As a kid, I was always thrilled by the opening sequence of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Patrick Stewart’s deep, paternal voice would tell us that space was “the final frontier,” while the orchestra swelled against a cosmic background full of wonder, mystery, curiosity, and possibility.

It made me dream about the future and the unknowable problems and adventures it holds.

As a teacher, I still believe in that kind of wonder. But I also recognize that the final frontier for most of our students will not likely be intergalactic exploration. It will still be a future of uncertain problems, creative demands, civic tensions, technological change, and questions without answer keys. If we want students prepared for that final frontier, we have to help them cross their first one: the classroom moment when learning stops being something handed down and becomes something pursued.

That first frontier begins with curiosity.

Fandakova and Gruber define curiosity as the desire to acquire new information and report that curiosity enhances learning and memory (Fandakova & Gruber, 2021). A question is often the student’s first frontier: the point where learning moves from “What do I have to do?” to “What can I discover?” Curiosity is not the opposite of rigor. It is one way to make rigor memorable.

The urgency of recovering that wonder feels especially sharp in the post-COVID educational landscape. Many leaders would rather stop talking about the pandemic, as though students who spent key developmental years behind masks, screens, uncertainty, and fear simply moved on because adults wanted them to. But children do not develop in abstractions. They develop in classrooms, homes, hallways, friendships, disruptions, and routines. The pandemic is not the only factor shaping today’s schools, but pretending it left no mark does not help us teach the students actually in front of us.

The klaxon alarms are not only anecdotal. NAEP reported that 2024 twelfth-grade reading scores were lower than both 2019 and 1992, and twelfth-grade mathematics scores were lower than both 2019 and 2005 (National Center for Education Statistics, 2024a, 2024b). NCES also reported serious school climate concerns in 2021–22, including hundreds of thousands of violent and nonviolent incidents in U.S. public schools (National Center for Education Statistics, 2024c). Kim’s analysis of Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking data found that creative thinking scores have declined since 1990, even as IQ scores rose (Kim, 2011).

These data do not prove one simple cause or even one simple phenomenon. They do not prove that technology ruined students, that the pandemic explains everything, or that the next generation is somehow broken. They do suggest something more useful: our approach needs reevaluation, and our goals require something more than completion. If students are struggling with skills, behavior, and creativity, then compliance alone cannot be the answer, but it should be a foundation of the solution. We need schools that are orderly enough to function and curious enough to matter.

The barefooted hippie child in me, the one that still distrusts the artificial nature of grades, is not always thrilled to admit this: structure matters. We cannot do the Dewey things without attending to the Maslow things. Safety, security, predictability, and purpose are not enemies of inquiry. They are often its preconditions.

The problem is not order. The problem is order for its own sake.

Buses should arrive on time. Students should move safely through hallways. Classrooms should settle smoothly. Assignments should be completed. Teachers should be able to teach. Leaders should establish routines that shape culture. Parents should expect schools to be safe, serious, and purposeful.

But if students are only making it through the day because of order, then we have protected them without fully educating them. Schools should not feel like prisons with better bulletin boards. We want students to thrive and to discover, regardless of whether their own minds are English gardens, hedge mazes in Versailles, starships in the Alpha Quadrant, laboratories under the sea, workshops on the moon, or something stranger and more original than any metaphor we can offer them.

Their minds contain both the first frontier and the final frontier: the practical and the imaginary, the structured and the unknown.

That means students need foundations, but those foundations should become bedrock for inspiration. In classrooms, organized confusion can fuel the mind. Chaos only burns opportunities to learn. Students need to read deeply, reason mathematically, manage conflict, create solutions, adapt, generalize, synthesize information, and solve problems first through guided steps and eventually through failing forward. They need to march through their multiplication facts so that they can dance through engineering problems.

Most episodes of Star Trek pose a problem complicated enough to require both expertise and imagination. The crew does not succeed because they ignore protocols. They succeed because their protocols are braided with strands of curiosity, judgment, and resourcefulness. The same was true in the very real story of Apollo 13. Both Starfleet and NASA depend on checklists, chains of command, and disciplined systems. The imagination of the final frontier is premised on the realities of the first one. But when life is on the line, order and creativity are not opposites. They are intertwined ways of thinking.

This is the balance schools need.

Teachers need routines to avoid chaos. Leaders need coherent systems that build cultures around consistency. Parents and communities need to trust that schools are safe and purposeful. Compliance has value because it creates safety, respect, responsibility, predictability, and readiness. But readiness is not the destination; it is the launchpad.

Guay argues that students’ natural tendencies toward growth “require an environment that will support them” (Guay, 2022). Wang and colleagues similarly caution that it is “unrealistic to assume” that every student will be intrinsically motivated all the time (Wang et al., 2024). That means the first frontier is not a classroom without expectations or guidelines; there must be end goals. It is a classroom where expectations point toward discovery.

Curiosity is more valuable than compliance, but it does not grow by accident. It grows when structure invites students to wonder what is on the other side of the walls we have built. Compliance can produce order and completion. Curiosity can produce ownership, engagement, experience, memory, creativity, and adaptive problem-solving. Frontiers are uncertain. Students must eventually move from following directions to asking better questions. Structure should always be in service of curiosity.

This is, of course, always easier said than done. Many schools can appear successful while failing to cultivate deep thinking, creativity, and ownership. Standardized tests do not measure every aspect of ability. That has long been the danger of drill-and-kill instruction. An orderly, silent class may be focused, but it may also be passive. Those students might have great test-taking ability and no cultivated abstract thinking. A completed worksheet may show understanding, but it may also show only task completion. A good report card may reflect performance without transfer.

So the burning question is not whether we need routines and structure. We do. That is why we have traffic lights on the roads and menus in restaurants. The better question is this: How do we use routines to help students move from notes on the page to songs in their hearts? Or to be less saccharine, how do we get them to express a unique intellectual identity?

Guay notes that the reasons students do schoolwork matter because those reasons “do not lead to the same quality of outcomes” (Guay, 2022). If a student is interested, they invest; if they are disinterested, at best they comply. Wang and colleagues explain that students can be externally regulated by rewards or punishment (Wang et al., 2024). Guay adds that “the more autonomous the motivation is,” the more positive the consequences should be for students (Guay, 2022).

This does not mean every student is ready for open-ended inquiry at the same moment. Some students flourish creatively sooner than others. Some need more modeling, more practice, more feedback, or more structure before they can take the leap. We should not punish students for not being ready to improvise. Opportunity and inspiration help cultivate readiness, but they do not automatically create it.

That is why we should not force a false choice between structure and autonomy. Structure should make autonomy possible. In my own creative writing classes, I’ve always introduced limitations and rules to activate imagination. “If there is a gun, it can only have three bullets” or “Your main character’s cell phone must be broken”. These kinds of rules in writing force creativity and eliminate the easy solutions to story problems. In science classes, we limit the materials either to prevent mistakes but in a maker space that same limitation becomes possibilities. That paper towel role suddenly becomes a column for a bridge or a building.

Guay describes autonomy-supportive behavior as giving students opportunities to act “within certain guidelines” while also offering meaningful rationales (Guay, 2022). Dong and colleagues likewise emphasize that autonomy support and structure together can strengthen student engagement (Dong et al., 2022).

If we take ourselves back to the bridge of the Enterprise-D, Captain Jean-Luc Picard’s catchphrase offers a good illustration of creativity and compliance. When Picard says, “Make it so,” it feels authoritative. But on the bridge of the Enterprise, that command usually follows evidence, expertise, discussion, and judgment. The high ranking offers have discussed it in the conference room or the ready room. What they are “making so” is the solution at the end of inquiry, not an unexplored mandate. The roles, knowledge, and relationships between the captain and his crew guide the actions and direction of the command.

The same should be true in classrooms. Compliance may organize the room. Discussion, reasoning, and creativity solve the problem.

Apollo 13 gives us a real-world version. The historically accurate version of Tom Hanks’ famous line is “Houston, we’ve had a problem” (NASA, 2020). The film’s “Failure is not an option” tagline captures the urgency of the moment (Howard, 1995). The crew and engineers did not survive by abandoning procedure. They survived because they understood their systems deeply enough to adapt when the checklist no longer held, when creativity and compliance combined into salvation. In classrooms, the problem is an assignment–the stakes aren’t as dire but the need for the solution is still the goal. The limitations or guidelines and the procedures are the venue for thinking and hopefully creativity. Sometimes they succeed and sometimes they don’t; luckily they aren’t in orbit around the moon and their lives aren’t on the line. Only their grades.

That is the classroom lesson. Students should have many opportunities to fail forward before they face real pressure and life-changing consequences. They need chances to build the intellectual and emotional resources required to solve problems with limited time, limited tools, and imperfect information. The Apollo 13 engineers worked inside severe constraints. Those constraints did not eliminate creativity. They defined the problem that creativity had to solve.

Project-based learning, inquiry tasks, labs, debates, design challenges, performances, and authentic writing can do the same. They can teach students to use limited resources toward expansive solutions. Following directions grows into using references. Using references grows into adapting knowledge. And when the checklist no longer solves the problem, curiosity and innovation begin.

Students engage more deeply when they feel both capable and trusted. Guay links autonomous motivation with academic performance, persistence, learning, satisfaction, and positive emotions at school (Guay, 2022). Wang and colleagues found consistent support for autonomy and competence in Self-Determination Theory-based interventions (Wang et al., 2024). But autonomy without competence is not freedom; it is frustration. Students cannot cross the first frontier unsupported. Gradual release of responsibility works because trust grows alongside tools, practice, and mastery.

Curiosity-centered classrooms depend on specific adult behaviors, not vague inspiration. Dong and colleagues call autonomy support a crucial determinant of teaching practice for student engagement (Dong et al., 2022). Teachers need to listen, respond to students’ questions, provide meaningful rationales, and create meaningful choices. Students need adults who explain why the work matters, invite questions, accept mistakes as information, and make risk feel survivable.

That last part is hard because failure stings for longer than success gratifies. Students often interpret grades as paychecks, and this has a great deal of social value, though its academic impact can distract from the nature of curiosity. Failure can feel like lost wages. Money is easy come, easy go; knowledge from learning is earned and kept, even when spent. If we want students to take intellectual risks, we have to create opportunities to fail without feeling like failures. We have to help them see the long-term gratification that productive struggle can yield.

There are practical ways to do this in every subject area. Begin with questions, not answers. Use mysteries, contradictions, curious scenarios, primary-source puzzles, strange images, and open-ended problems. Ask students what they would do and why. Do not rush to the solution before they have had a chance to wonder.

Explain the why. “Because it is on the test” may produce compliance, but it rarely produces ownership. Thinking is not just on the test. In life, thinking is the test.

Offer meaningful choice within clear boundaries. Choice might involve topic, text, strategy, product, resources, group role, audience, or problem-solving pathway. Choice does not remove standards. It gives students a stake in meeting them and defining the world around them.

We must teach students to treat mistakes as information. Ask: What does this error show? What assumption did we make? What strategy might work next? What did this attempt teach us?

We must make the work meaningful. Guay argues that teachers should create tasks that are authentic or meaningful for children (Guay, 2022). That does not mean every assignment has to change the world. It means students should understand why the work matters beyond the gradebook.

Building curiosity-centered schools is a shared responsibility. Teachers must ask whether students are not only on task, but thinking. Leaders must ask whether systems are merely producing quiet rooms or supporting meaningful learning. Parents can ask better questions at home: What surprised you today? What did you figure out? What are you still wondering? What did you do when you got stuck?

Curiosity cannot die when the lesson plan ends. It has to live in our expectations, our routines, our family conversations, our leadership priorities, and our classroom culture. Students who understand structures also learn when structures matter, when they can be bent, and when they need to be rebuilt. Sometimes they need to follow the procedure. Sometimes they need to repurpose the tool. Sometimes they need to reverse the polarity and redirect power to the shields.

Ultimately, the smooth school day matters. Safety matters. Completed work matters. Clear expectations matter. But those are premises, not conclusions.

If we want students ready for the final frontier, we have to help them cross the first one. Compliance can produce order. Curiosity produces ownership. Compliance can complete the task. Curiosity can deepen the learning. Compliance helps students follow the path. Curiosity helps them navigate when the path disappears.

The future our students face will be uncertain, demanding, creative, and unscripted. Every classroom offers a chance to prepare them for it, if only we are willing to take them on these voyages toward the final frontier.

There is a distinct difference between having a belief and having a value. Values, in my opinion, are Platonic Forms from which a more concrete idea that we believe in might take root in a practical world. A value has a deep and meaningful impact behind the scenes, while a belief is something we may act on based on this. As an educator and as a school leader, I have a value of integrity. I believe that in so doing I have to hold myself accountable to the same honesty, transparency, and trust I expect from my students and the members of my teams. I believe that I have to lead by example and hold myself accountable to critiques. Contrary to what you might think, it is remarkably uncomplicated to do this. It is, however, uncomfortable and humbling when you’ve made a mistake.

Once, in the course of managing some rambunctious behavior among some students, I was interrogating a student about their role in a minor mishap. The student had a fabulous and fluent excuse: “It wasn’t me, it was them.” When pressed with some follow-up questions, the clarity of that language was shattered to an “um ah em ah um.” I had the kid dead to rights, and I echoed the stumbling, sending them packing to the office to find their consequences as soon as someone was available to render sentencing.

I forgot about the moment and went about my day. Middle school mishaps are ubiquitous, and I rarely let such workaday interactions as a student trying to absolve themselves get so serious as to let them turn the course of my day. As I was making hallway rounds about an hour later, one of the students involved told me that the child I was speaking to prior was very upset. I asked why; the consequence couldn’t have been so dire. I found out that the child had a stutter. Unintentionally, I had mocked them for something that they had worked for many years in elementary school to overcome. Suddenly, I realized it was not a grasping for a fiction that I had witnessed; it was duress expressing itself in a real stutter. I checked it out. The stutter was historical and well under control, but it was real.

Now, I had gone from bringing consequences to being a bully. I checked the schedule and saw that it was recess, found the student, pulled them aside, and said, “I owe you an apology.” I took account for myself, put myself at the mercy of the student’s forgiveness, and left with a handshake and an understanding. Had I found out about a student unintentionally bullying, I’d have brokered a mediated discussion where an understanding was found and left forgiveness to the bullied without an expectation—only an opportunity. I held myself to that standard.

But I wasn’t done yet. As a trusted adult and a school leader, I have a more discerning person over to whom I’d have to deliver a mea culpa. I had to call home, and I had to do so immediately. I caught Mom at work on her cell phone. I started with, “Everything is okay, nobody is in danger or trouble,” though I very well may have been. Parents always want to know upfront that there is no physical harm when you cold call. I told the story, soup to nuts, just as I laid it out above. I told her that I felt awful and that I didn’t go into education to make kids feel bad about themselves; quite the contrary. In my position, I should be more cautious in how I proceed to call kids out, even given my friendly and playful interactions in general.

Her response was, “Things happen,” only she didn’t say “things.” She thanked me for all the effort that I went through to make things right and to hold myself accountable. I told her integrity is something I value, and I felt I had tarnished mine. To my great relief, she said she felt it was the opposite…people are fallible. She had been speaking with the student at home about the idea that nobody is perfect and that from time to time we all mess up. How we take accountability, she added, is what matters. We had a productive conversation about another topic that needed addressing that we might not have otherwise had to, and I was able to provide support in a way that wasn’t yet on my radar. She told me that she was going to continue the conversation with her child and use me as an example of what to do when you make a mistake. She assured me that this was far more valuable than having done it right in the first place, from her perspective. While I was still embarrassed, we left on a strong note, more partners than strangers.

Other adults might have believed that their value of personal integrity put them above apologizing to a student, or that to preserve the appearance of that integrity, it would be best to hope the story never came back to them from a parent having resolved the situation directly with the child. Another person might have felt that integrity was owning up to the parent but not discussing it with the child at all. Beliefs drive actions and can be changed. In situations where those beliefs from the value of integrity played out, I know for certain that there would have been more to learn and far less partnership in the end. I value my values deeply and think about what they look like in practice. The simple solution was the approach I took; it was harder, required humility and self-reflection, and required dedication to my value over my reputation, but it was not complicated. Sometimes the right thing is the hard thing, and the hard thing is simple. Sometimes it isn’t. But it always involves real accountability to know if we really value that value or if it just looks nice on a poster.

Mike Schmoker suggests that values are visible in what you require teachers to teach. He has a very concrete approach to them. Values, Schmoker argues, create equity and increase achievement. He argues that in our curriculum, students have to have guaranteed access to the same essential knowledge and literacy demands across classrooms, for example. If the demands aren’t universal, the value is a pleasant fiction. As much as I love curriculum, I would dig deeper. Schools are the places where, for most of the year, students spend most of the month, most of the week, and most of the day. They have to be places that mean something more than the three R’s. They have to be places where they can see the respectful and respectable. Schools are the microcosm we train kids in so that they can embrace everything we need them to be and actualize out there in the harsh real world. If we do it right, maybe that real world won’t be so harsh.

Marzano and Waters discuss non-negotiable commitments that can’t be waived. Our values transcend inspiration to obligation. They argue that our obligation is to “the right work.” Again, this is framed on curriculum, but before the curriculum can happen, people have to be trustworthy, the conversations need to be real, and we have to embody the expectations that not only create an environment of learning but a future of civility, and dare I say, humanity. We can have “defined autonomy” around ensuring that the multiplication tables are well known and weighing ourselves on the scales of our own expectations.

Richard DuFour outlines the idea that our values are collective promises. When we value something, we are promising to act on it, for it, or in it. When we value excellence in learning, that means we demand excellence in teaching, in preparation, in knowledge, in assessment, in remediation, and in enrichment. When we value safety, that means that we take every precaution, explore every conceivable danger, weigh every action, and look at every shadow with critical lenses to see what could go wrong. From a position of leadership, values of character come from living the value to its fullest. When we as leaders or as teachers embrace the value, we can collaborate on it, make it communal, and make its impact felt.

It is easy to get caught up in the laminated poster version of these values, or for their true meaning to become lost in a belief that limits their potential and loses their Platonic Form. As leaders, we have to be humble and faithful servants to the values we want our schools and communities to embody. We should do so deliberately, actively, thoughtfully, with humility, humanity, and personal forgiveness and accountability when we fall short. My mantra is “always be committed to new mistakes,” learn from the ones you’ve made and do your best to make up for them. After all, “things happen”…only it’s not always “things.”

For many students, school is like those old Hanna-Barbera cartoons during a chase—the doors keep speeding by in endless hallways that never change. This unrelenting, endless marathon has them moving quickly from task to task but leaves no opportunity to pause, reflect, absorb, and take in what they’ve been learning. In cases like this, students become so mentally overloaded that they “literally can’t even.” It becomes impossible to juggle all the expectations set on them, and they can become so wound up that even if they manage to sleep, they aren’t really resting. There is no time to reset and no opportunity to come in fresh and ready to learn.

Research on learning and adolescent sleep patterns suggests that this isn’t just an emotionally taxing experience—it is neurological. When we sleep, our brains consolidate information from our working memory into long-term memory. This process is necessary for information to “stick,” and it is part of why “cramming” before a test doesn’t yield long-term results. In any situation, without adequate amounts of sleep and rest, information can be held temporarily, but it isn’t learned. This can leave even the best of students feeling like their effort hasn’t translated into progress. For struggling students, it can be downright demoralizing.

It Isn’t Lack of Motivation. It’s Cognitive Overload

Students often don’t struggle because they are apathetic or aren’t trying hard enough. More often, they have “mental clutter.” Imagine that the brain is a desktop: papers all over the place, a calendar with the days out of order, unfinished assignments, piles of deadlines, test dates on parade. When students try to sit at their desks, there is so much in front of them that they cannot untangle what they need to do first. This compounds into worry, anxiety, task paralysis, or any number of other things that can keep students from getting started. All of these factors are compounded at night, when they could be decluttering their minds and focusing on what needs to be done.

Mental planning and scheduling can influence how information is organized and prioritized, according to some research. When the brain is preoccupied with the disorganized desktop, it becomes worried in a Gordian knot that cannot be cut. This worry interferes with high-quality sleep and leaves the student at a disadvantage for the next day’s cognitive functioning.

This overload affects:

  • Attention and focus
  • Emotional regulation
  • Working memory capacity
  • Executive functioning and self-control

In short, the sleep-deprived adolescent brain becomes overtaxed—less able to absorb new information, regulate emotions, or plan effectively.

Supporting the Whole Child

Supporting students is not only about academic rigor or productivity. It is about helping them develop habits that protect their well-being, confidence, and independence. Research consistently shows that when sleep is protected and planning is structured, students are better able to regulate emotions, retain learning, and engage meaningfully with school.

Simple routines and research-backed practices—like writing a to-do list before bed and using consistent planning systems—can help students pause, breathe, and recognize that progress is happening, even when the road feels long. They can see the tape at the end of the marathon and take meaningful, refreshing hits of water or Gatorade to keep them going when fatigue sets in. Then, finally, they can cross the finish line on big tasks and reflect on the success they’ve earned before they get rest and prep for the next run.

Below are some suggestions, besides journaling, on how to help your student organize the messy desk in their brain—and their physically messy desk.

At the onset of every school year, a familiar sequence unfolds—often faster than the leaves can change color. Back-to-school catalogs now arrive in June, well before summer vacation has begun. Teachers have their recurring stress dreams: classrooms without chairs, students arriving a week early, lesson plans gone missing. And, inevitably, the news cycle fills with stories about test scores, college enrollment, and teacher employment.

In 2026, that last category remains the most troubling—and no longer surprising.

Alongside predictable debates about student loans, tuition, and testing, the teacher shortage has become a permanent feature of the educational landscape. Coverage is reliably polarized. One side blames “lazy” teachers, unions, and tenure systems for protecting incompetence. The other points to stagnant wages, eroding professional respect, and increasingly untenable working conditions. The talking points change slightly year to year, but the shortage persists.

Back in 2015, NPR’s Eric Westervelt described the teacher shortage as “the canary in the mine,” warning that negative public rhetoric and political hostility were driving prospective teachers away from the profession—particularly in states like California and New York where wages are higher than elsewhere and protections are generally stronger.

Eleven years later, the warning has gone unheeded. Not only is the canary dead, but the bones are dust According to the Learning Policy Institute, by 2025 nearly 90% of teacher vacancies were caused by attrition, not retirement. The pipeline for new teachers—already weakened after the Great Recession—has not recovered. Declines exist across all subject areas, with special education shortages especially acute nationwide.

The problem is no longer emerging. It is entrenched. The Canary is more than dead, its bones are ashes and dust.

Schools still need teachers. Students still need qualified professionals. But the debate inevitably circles back to a deceptively simple question: What counts as qualified? In a post–No Child Left Behind world, the definition of “teacher” has been scrutinized, politicized, and diluted. We now live in an era where everyone is an expert—where the WebMD doctor has been replaced by the ChatGPT genius, and professional preparation is dismissed as unnecessary gatekeeping.

While AI can augment our planning and practice, you can’t replace good humans helping students. Effective educators learn theory, grow over time, and become masters through practice—just as in any serious profession or trade. Teaching is also highly specialized. Excellence in a content related field does not translate automatically to early childhood, elementary, or secondary classroom instruction. Good pedagogy requires different tools, developmental knowledge, and instructional strategies.

Florida, alternatively, is allowing Veterans with the equivalent of an Associate’s Degree (60 Credits) to teach if they have 48 months of military service. While alternative pathways for career changers is nothing new, are we struggling as a country to attract teachers so badly that we are equating tours of duty in combat to effective pedagogy? This is by no means a slight to our veterans, but even those who are competent in related fields like finance, medicine, and the hard sciences have a hard time transitioning to the classroom…and for good reason. The assumption that content knowledge alone qualifies someone to teach remains one of the most persistent—and damaging—misconceptions to recruiting good teachers. Knowing biology does not mean knowing how to teach it. Lecturing is not the same as instruction. Teaching requires understanding developmental readiness, learning differences, behavior supports, and how to design instruction that students can actually access. Is a content expert trained to identify dyscalculia? To implement IEP accommodations? To manage a classroom of thirty children with diverse cognitive and emotional needs? To teach the learner, not just the material?

Some people are brilliant in their field and still ineffective communicators. Understanding does not automatically confer the ability to explain, scaffold, or adapt. Teaching is the art of triggering applied cognitive science. It requires knowing which questions to ask before knowing how to answer them. That expertise comes from coursework, mentorship, supervised practice, and experience. I’ve worked across educational settings from pre-kindergarten through graduate school, with general education and special education populations alike. The contexts differ, but the principle holds: effective teaching is crafted and forged from raw materials into fine weilded tools.

To be clear, this is not an argument against career changers. It is an argument for standards, respect, and competitive pay for competent professionals. Certification should require full preparation—education theory, supervised practice, and demonstrated competence—because children deserve professionals, not experiments or charity. Many of the best teachers I know have been career changers. Most of the best new teachers I’ve worked with were still getting their degrees. I was personally working as a school leader before I ever pursued the additional degree or certifications to work as one. On the job learning in education happens whether or not you completed your preparation program before they put you in front of students, but the quality of how we prepare teachers and the ways we entice them to enter the profession have to motivate the best and the brightest to join us.

Given the prevailing attitudes toward teacher preparation, it is no mystery why enrollment in education programs remains low.  The profession is routinely scapegoated, its training dismissed, its unions vilified, and its compensation stagnant relative to comparable fields. It now takes something closer to a calling than a career plan to choose teaching. I believe there are many people who truly want to teacher but they are convinced to go into other fields where they are left unhappy, unfulfilled, and don’t feel purpose. Others feel forced into teaching. Either way, there is a threshold of teachers who leave the profession at the three and five year marks. At the three year mark, you might leave the field entirely forever. Those who remain beyond five years tend to be deeply committed, perpetually reflective, and incapable of truly “clocking out.” While the latter part contributes to a lot of burn out and is a quality of life issue for teachers, the amount of dedication required for professional teaching is evident.

With that said, teachers are not exclusive to those entering the field. Teachers are, almost without exception, collaborative and welcoming—eager to mentor newcomers and share practice. That ethos reflects the mission of education itself: to bring forth potential. The profession needs new voices and new ideas. It simply asks that recruitment be grounded in respect for established research, theory, and practice—and that educators be treated with the same professional regard afforded to other trained fields. Let those who are talented, who yearn to learn, who burn to teach, and who love the classroom feel that there is a route to prosperity in the field, and let them feel well prepared for those first difficult years.

The casual dismissal of teacher preparation is a textbook case of the Dunning–Kruger effect. Those least familiar with the complexity of teaching are often the most confident in critiquing it. The same applies to top-down policy written by non-educators, often timed conveniently around election cycles. Policymakers frequently lack classroom experience, pedagogical training, or relevant data—though they may be exceptionally qualified in other industries entirely. They feel that being students makes them experts in teaching and learning. However, as a licensed driver and a highly prepared educator, I assure you that my best place in the classroom…not the garage. Training and expertise matter.

If the teacher shortage is truly a problem worth solving—and not merely a useful byproduct of policy neglect—then the solution is straightforward, if politically inconvenient: restore respect to the profession, invest in preparation programs, and treat educators as trained experts rather than replaceable or interchangable labor. Without that shift, the shortage will deepen, the quality gap will widen, and students will bear the cost and so will everyone else. We have to go back to the mine, find the diamonds, and pay top dollar to place them in the settings where they will shine….otherwise that canary died for nothing.

Every January, as the long weekend dedicated to Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. approaches, classrooms across the country pivot to show his famous “I Have A Dream” speech and limit his work and life to those four words and the bus boycott. Many students don’t have a full understanding of who the man was and what his dream meant. They don’t have a sense of how far things have come, how dangerous a backswing can be, and how it can harm everyone regardless of their stake in Dr. King’s dream. As a social studies teacher, I know that Dr. King holds a special place in an American history as one of the most influential non-Presidents. As an American, I know he represents the hope of a struggle that is far from over.

Dr. King occupies a rare place in the American Imagination, especially for elementary school students. He is usually one of the few historical figures that they can name without hesitation. The substance of his four famous words are often ephemeral for them though. I’ve had students tell me everything from he was born a slave, to he ended slavery, to he was the first black president. Some of them understand the words to mean that “everyone is equal” and depending on their background, privilege, and the amount of news that is discussed at home, they think that equality is largely settled business. In recent years, I’ve even noticed a trend of students who claim that the weight of inequality has swung in the opposite direction (a stark note of the political views they hear at home). “Isn’t racism over?” ask many students who will never face it but will often benefit from its effects that are imperceptible to them.

Regardless of the slant, equality and equity are far from settled matters in the United States. In fact, the distance between King’s dream and the reality of our world today feels in many ways more visible in 2026 than when I was a kid on the other side of the desk. The struggle for an egalitarian America has become controversial in new ways. Much as slavery became Jim Crow and redlining maintained segregation long after Brown v. Board of Education, there are lines in the sand that cannot be crossed in this country even today. Race, class, place of origin, accident of birth are all under the microscope in today’s America. Who you are and who you want to be is either something you take control of or is controlled for you. Oftentimes, it is both.

Access, institutions, opportunity, and power are more complex and the tools used to keep people separate like race, class, creed, and perspective are wielded ever more deftly and shrewdly than in the past. In some states, it has become illegal to discuss the reasons that Rosa Park would not move from her seat. Books in Florida say that she was tired because institutional racism cannot be discussed with students. Teachers are banned from adding the context that she was tired of the racism that made her a second class citizen. Removing the concept may not remove the feeling that some students have that something isn’t fair, but it will remove their agency to act.

On the other hand, many students don’t feel safe in their schools anyway. This isn’t just because they are distrustful of a teacher judging them for who they are, how they look, or what they said, but also because the schools themselves are no longer sanctuaries. For example, for years the idea that school security is a division of the NYPD in New York City made students feel unsafe because they felt targeted by Police on the streets of their neighborhood and in the school building. Now, across the country ICE Agents can enter a school building and arrest children who came to school looking to learn. Whether it is the institution, the administration, the teachers, or the outside agents who enter the building, many students don’t have a sense of belonging, equality, or safety in their schools. Students who feel that the world has dealt them a bad hand aren’t likely to think that they can succeed in a society where schools are traps. How hollow the “I Have A Dream” speech must ring in their ears in those schools.

In a world where college is presented as the only route to success and the only route to equity, how can we expect otherized and underprivileged students to achieve when the setting of their primary learning isn’t a safe space? How can they invest in themselves when student loan debts have been constructed as trap rather than an a resource? When housing is increasingly unattainable and providing for your family while you are young is financially unachievable? How can we expect a country to thrive when all these barriers for the next generation are in place and some can’t even discuss the bill left on the table from slavery that Dr. King called out the work of his lifetime?

Education is the great leveler. Through our ability to create a thoughtful, well-informed, and critical thinking electorate in the schools our principles are tested, or values are run through the praxis of reality, and opportunities are identified and seized. They don’t have to be just in higher education, or in trades, or even in economic terms. The dream of living the equality that is inherently your own isn’t a matter of economic determination, it is a matter of dignity. We don’t manufacture sameness in the classroom, we cultivate agency in a civics sandbox.

Dr. King’s words are often twisted at this time of year by those who would ensure that his dream never materializes. Social media posts that cherry pick simple words out of a complicated, intellectually constructed philosophical framework that stabs at the heart of the status quo for something better, more humane, and deeply beautiful are ones we should look at careful. Beware those that twist these words. The cognitive gymnastics required to flip his words into denying that divisions and inequities remain are dizzying, yet they come year after year without fail. We cannot allow this message to be twisted like Orwellian doublespeak. The message has to be clear.

If Dr. King’s dream is to be realized at all, it will be realized through education—not through standardization, not through debt, not through control, but through intentional, human-centered learning. Through systems that honor difference, cultivate skill, and prepare young people not just to pass tests, but to live meaningful lives with the agency to demand that the society bends to their needs and not the other way around. If we are ever to live that dream where the content of your character is the defining characteristic of how you are judged, schools have to be safe places where students can invest in their own development of self. We have to let his words ring true and real.

In 2025’s movie reboot of Superman, Writer/Director James Gunn decided to skip the origin aspect that was so iconically presented in the 1978 film. Part of Gunn’s rationale was that Superman’s origin was so well known to audiences that he could jump directly into the interesting parts of the story. Gunn was right. The plight of the planet Krypton is burned into pop-culture consciousness deeply; however, for the sake of argument, I’ll run the salient points down here.

The scientist Jor-El has irrefutable evidence that Krypton is doomed to explode. A politically motivated ruling body refuses to acknowledge the evidence. Doing nothing to either save the planet or save their people, Krypton explodes (with a few survivors, including the infant Kal-EL, remaining to make comic book history).

The Kryptonian people didn’t perish because they lacked the technology to do so. The survivors who remain for the narrative all had the means to leave the planet either through The Phantom Zone, or space travel, or whatever MacGuffin of storytelling allows writers to add more characters. Fictional though it is, the warning from the origin of Superman is that ignoring science because it is inconvenient, uncomfortable, or politically inexpedient will lead to destruction.

The current trend in the United States, both in the political realm and in the general population, is to mistake content for information; and in some cases, technology for wisdom. With the Department of Education under attack, institutions of higher learning having their funding cut because research goes against party platforms, the Department of Health and Human Services led by skeptics without skill sets, and economics being put ahead of climate change realities, the need for an increase in quality, scope, and vision for science and STEM education should be a paramount national security concern.

The United States lags in science education against peer states. In general, I feel that comparing education in the US to those of peer states (especially in Europe) is not an apples to apples assessment, I think the following points are fair game . Students are only 22% proficient in science according to a 2021 National Academies report. This is directly connected to less than 20 minutes per day in elementary school on science. Around 70% of teachers say they feel unprepared to teach science–a finding which matches my own dissertation research on elementary departmentalization of ELA and Math which suggests that students achieve high scores when teachers have the opportunity to teach single subjects.

While this has been true for decades, a sharp moment of relief can be found with the institution of No Child Left Behind. This legislation, while intentioned to improve student outcomes has proven disastrous. Subjects like Science and Social Studies were left in the dust while Reading and Math were over emphasized. No version of the reauthorization bills have quite squared this, to the detriment of the so-called content areas. With this loss in instructional time tied to new guidance, science fell to the wayside and we became increasingly a society with adults who does not understand basic science. A society that doesn’t teach science eventually inherits leaders who can’t recognize disaster or salvation. At that point, facts become subject to opinion because everything is interpretation.

Somehow we went from the nation that invented the lightbulb to being the nation that can’t explain how they work.

There are many signs that political talks about science have become unhealthy in America. A big reason is that many people don’t really get how science works, especially the scientific method. This issue affects everyone, no matter their political views. Republicans, Democrats, Independents, and others have all been guilty of twisting scientific facts to fit their arguments. Right now, the Republican Party and the Trump administration greatly influence stories and policies in the country, but this could change with future leaders who may misuse data regardless of party. If we don’t improve science education, we may continue facing these same problems, regardless of who is in charge.

A common saying online is “do your own research.” However, this often means looking up articles from unreliable sources, trusting social media posts from people claiming to be experts without real qualifications, or using AI tools that can mix up facts with false information. (I also use Google and AI for research, I also make use of data based, peer reviewed or reputable sources, and I check my sources as thoroughly as I can). People often ignore important studies from universities and respected institutions for convenience or financial gain. For instance, in the 1950s, misleading information was shared to deny that cigarettes cause cancer, proving how fake science can cater to people’s beliefs instead of exposing hard truths. Smokers wanted to keep smoking without guilt or worry, and the industry wanted to take their cash for the opportunity. Even though some knowledgeable experts on social media try to fix misinformation, many are just seeking quick fame and use errors in research to support their views, similarly to those tobacco companies. The scientific community can make mistakes, and science is always changing with new evidence. A good researcher will say “based on the latest findings” rather than claiming they know the absolute truth.

The availability of information has highlighted fringe beliefs. For instance, President-Elect Trump met with Robert Kennedy Jr. in 2017 to discuss autism and vaccine skepticism. During Trump’s first term, efforts to address these issues stalled, but anti-vaccine sentiments gained legitimate attention. While this ultimately didn’t happen in his first term, in the second term RFK Jr. attached himself to Trump’s movement and has done significant damage to the apparatus of medical science and research in this country as the Secretary of Health and Human Services. RFK Jr. holds a significant position in health, despite being often corrected for his misunderstandings and having no verifiable bona fides in science or medicine.

This is symbolic and exemplary of the lack of science literacy and understandings that besiege the country.Before Trump’s presidency, vaccine skepticism mainly resided with some liberals and religious conservatives, but it grew among Republicans post-COVID-19. A September 2021 report from FiveThirtyEight noted this change, emphasizing the politicization of misinformation and the need for improved science education to prevent future generational mistakes. Furthermore, the fact that these positions migrate along the political spectrum at a rapid pace are cause for concern that any holding science can make will be a castle made of sand unless something changes.

A critical issue affecting humanity is the denial of human-caused Climate Change. The failure of the Democrat Congress to pass the Waxman-Markey climate bill in 2009-2010 marked a significant turning point. Without these emission standards, President Obama had to implement measures through executive action, sparking a political back-and-forth under different administrations. President Trump’s withdrawal from the Paris Agreement left a leadership void, coinciding with increased extreme weather events like wildfires and droughts. These phenomena highlight the urgency of addressing climate change, as they are becoming more commonplace as generations of abusing the environment are coming to consequence.

Interestingly, the COVID-19 pandemic did show some data regarding emissions. During the big lockdown in Spring 2020 reduced traffic on the streets resulted in measurably cleaner air, clearer skies, lower particulate matter, and generally better breathing conditions in the short term. When the behavior that climate scientists have advocated for over many years was forced by circumstance the result was measurable and noticeable. Human behavior changed and the planet responded. On the fictional Planet Krypton, such a shift in behavior might have seen Superman with far more cousins. On Earth, greater ability to interpret findings will lead to better policy and a brighter cleaner future.

How To Address The Need For Science Literacy In Schools

Many families still provide some deference to science classes. We tell students to love science, but we pay those who teach it with pay that is far less than competitive. The kids who grow up excelling in science classes take that expertise into fields outside of education. We simply don’t pay teachers enough to live on. Even in places like New York that have among the highest pay for teachers in the nation, teachers in the best districts can’t afford to live in the neighborhoods they work in. The same almost 70% of teachers who don’t feel qualified to teach science provide those first formative experience as there isn’t anyone else to do it. There are some highly qualified and exceptional science teachers out there, but so many of our instructors (especially at the elementary level) don’t feel well prepared to provide the foundations we need for our students to be successful at the higher levels. Even when they do, it is hard to create time in their schedules to do so with the attention that good science instruction requires and deserves.

It is difficult to find time that doesn’t exist. We have to consider how we utilize time and what we have time for in schools. With a national priority on science, we don’t have to throw out focus on civics, reading, math, or the arts. We need to make clear that science is a collaborative and ever changing field. We have to push for equity of access for all students, for increased hands on learning, and teacher support. All of this will cost money, especially if we want our teachers to be able to live well. Money for schools is never high on the list of priorities for the politicos who hold the purse strings, and that has never been more true than in this first year of Mr. Trump’s second term.

We can use the same spear used to skewer science to prop it up. The economic gains of a population versed in science, technology, engineering, and math (also known as STEM) cannot be denied. Workforce development outside of the classroom will be directly tied to our ability to create advanced technologies, medicines, and commodities. Whether we want the patent money to flow into the United States or for these to be manufactured, designed, and built here we cannot allow science to be on the job training.

In order to thrive, we have to remove the political blocks on information and academic freedom that have been rolled out in the second Trump Administration, we have to undo decades of past prioritizing of time and focus in classrooms, we have to bring dignified pay and prepared and competent professionals en masse to the science classroom, and we have to move scientific discourse into the public square…but leave the party platform behind. This discussion has to be around verifiable findings, replicable studies, and actionable interpretations. We have to be the champions of the newest findings and be willing to amend our actions to match those findings without throwing away the tried and true premises of the scientific method.

We have to do these things and fast, because if we don’t Krypton will be more than a fantastical fiction. We will find ourselves in an inhospitable world with no rockets, no capes, and no Phantom Zones to escape into. Let’s ensure that we make Krypton a fiction again rather than a distinct possibility.

As it turns out, I was not reading trashy romance novels. What I was reading however has had just as much stigma (if not more) thrown its way over the years in terms of genres. I’m an avid comic book reader. Or fanboy. Or whatever you want to call it.

I read comics. And I likely owe my love of reading to comics.

It’s safe to say that comics have come a long way in terms of public relations, but they’ve always had an intrinsic power—one of literacy, controversy, visual stimulation, and controversy. Did I mention controversy? For some reason, comics have always managed to touch on the rawest nerves of the staunchest American political ideologues, parents, and educators. In the 1950’s, the horror and pulp comics of the age were paired with degenerate juvenile delinquency, perversions, and illiteracy. Imagine, there was a time when young people reading was considered a gateway to illiteracy. What would the creators of the Comics Code Authority think of today’s social media platforms?

There could be nothing further from the truth then, and even less so
today. As a teacher, I see with alarming regularity the apathy with which    today’s kids approach the prospect of long form reading. They much    more vigilantly approach brief transiently trending videos from the internet and often succumb to the less than standard spellings of internet    shorthand, meme-lingo, and whatever social media thing is going in the moment. While elementary school teachers are encouraged to create text rich environments, the world itself has become a text rich environment by way of wifi, smartphone, ubiquitous computers, and an inordinate amount of marketing at every turn. Its no wonder they seem apathetic to the experience of an imageless endeavor in reading motionless words—the level of stimulation surrounding written words in every other format is so abundantly sensory that it is easy to become desensitized.

In fact, the same can be said for in-classroom non-negotiables such as word walls, lesson charts, student friendly rubrics, sentence starters, graphic organizers, labels, standards displays, bulletin boards….enough! Its too much, everywhere, and for many students hard to focus. Our children are stimulated with visuals and text and every turn. And one could argue that comic books are the very embodiment of that over-indulged visual…but I don’t. In fact, I contend that they operate very differently and to an opposite effect almost entirely.

You see, while we’ve been figuring out ways to hammer information into kid’s brains and build  automaticity for reading, we’ve likely just been turning many kids off and wearing away at their attention spans. The more we approach learning in general as a war—think “word attack strategies” —the less love of learning we instill. Kids in my experience have been trained to see reading as a chore rather than as a liberating experience. Once you pull away the curtain and expose kids outright to the man pulling the levers, there’s no magic in it. But for me, comics were and still are a gateway to all those wonderful skills we teach in our ELA periods with none of the jargon.

Reading graphic novels and comics is a rewarding practical examination in utilizing all those reading skills we try to instill in students in a cold and laboratory friendly manner. Often times, in classrooms we force kids into inauthentic reading practices.  Students have to learn to love reading because reading is something to love—a highly personal experience of independent learning that you can share and interpret with others or keep to yourself.

I needn’t make too much of an argument for picture support, I’d wager. Relating text to image and image to text is the fundamental skill exercised in enjoying any comic book. In fact, often the art might be so fantastical that it is indeed the text that describes the image rather than the other way around. Directionality is certainly tested in reading a comic book. Depending on the layout of the art for a particular spread of pages, a reader has to ascertain not only which direction the story is going, but which way to move the book; a good two page spread will take several problem solving strategies because they tend to center around a central image with secondary panels floating around to explain it.

In terms of decoding skills, superhero and sci-fi/fantasy comics in particular have their fair share of nonsense words, decodable words, suffix and prefix patterns, and large multisyllabic words that require any number of word attack strategies. Breaking down, understanding, and mastering these words is far more rewarding than putting together unifix cubes with words printed on the side or coloring in a picture of a hat. In addition, continued exposure to these words augments the reader’s vocabulary in ways that are almost immeasurable. My whole life I’ve had people ask me where I pick up words that use conversationally, and time after time I’ve told them comic books and inappropriate television. Between the two I managed to pick up and retain a lot of words as a kid…and I still do to this day. Many comic book stories are great science fiction and expose the reader (myself included) to a variety of advanced or theoretical scientific ideas , concepts and theories. Additionally, they are often full of historical and cultural references and offer a richness and depth to a student’s background knowledge.

Comic book readers also have a strong sense of literary concepts—even if they don’t always know them by name. When you read ongoing series such as Spider-Man, Batman, or Superman you are dealing with complicated story continuity, involved plots, character development that sophisticates and the core of a character, and a strong sense of communication between the author and the reader. In particular a character like Superman or Batman that has been running continuously for 80  years or better allows for longevity in reading and attention span. Many fans will “go on a run” and pick up a particular author or artist’s stint on a title, or a particular story arc straight through. Others read religiously from month to month, or week to week, or day to day following a series ad infinitum if possible. The highly serialized nature of periodical comics allows for a long relationship with characters and Marvel and DC particularly, having integrated character universes allow for exploration of worlds of fantasy through words and pictures that no other genre or medium can offer.

In terms of content, comics also have a lot to offer—far more than the medium’s detractors tend to give it credit for. Many works extend the depths of the capes-and-tights genre for thoughtful, dark, and politically charged works such as Dark Knight Returns, Watchmen, Sin City, V for Vendetta, Sandman, Grant Morrison’s Animal Man, and many others. Art Spiegleman’s incomparable MAUS and MAUS II, for example, saw the subject matter of real personal, ethnic, global, and political strife meet literature through the misunderstood medium of “the underground comix” format. Will Eisner of explored New York tenement life in A Contract With God. More recently we’ve seen author/artists like Craig Thompson push personal, spiritual, and emotional boundaries with stories like Blankets and Habibi. Publishers also tend to offer a variety of younger-reader friendly material that has sparks a high quality of interest and manages to push reading boundaries—Uncle Scrooge comics from Disney is a good example as “The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck” is probably one of the best character biographies in comics, despite being about the world’s richest anthropomorphic duck.

The literary value of comics and graphic novels has not been entirely overlooked in education though, as Bone is often included in upper elementary and middle school libraries but these works are the exception rather than the rule. Instead students are often offered inauthentic attempts at comics fare with adaptations of works into the medium—attempts that seem to contracted specifically for the purpose of creating a graphic novel adaptation of another work. I somehow doubt there was a creative team out there aching to make the comic book version of Nancy Drew in a Japanese Manga style, but these are the types one might most readily find in a school or classroom library.

In recent years, many publishers have found the niche of books that cater to balance the classroom and child’s sensibility, more in the vein of Bone rather than a forced adaptation (though, in fairness some adaptations are excellent). Full novel publications from creators like Dave Pilkey, who brings us Captain Underpants and Dog Man, or Jerry Craft who brings us New Kid show the depth and breadth that comics directed at literacy can have when done authentically. Pilkey’s work is silly and engaging and brings children to the table of moving through pages. Craft’s story digs into deep messages about racism and prejudice and belonging in a way that is fun, real, and relatable.

I suppose, the argument against the comics some would consider to have literary value would be the level of violence many comics contain but even that is an almost moot point. Many children’s books contain the same level of violence. The Harry Potter books contain murders, magical bouts, and physical violence. Twilight and the Hunger Games do as well…rarely are the inclusion of these works into student’s reading diets questioned. Perhaps sexual undertones and overtones? I’d redirect you to the same volumes for your concerns. Instead I’d argue that it is the visual nature and a stigma still held against comics that keeps them from being truly utilized, authentically, in many school settings…even though they certainly generate high interest for all children, across a variety of titles.

Certainly, comic books are not the panacea for all the reading and literary woes in schools, but offering reading material for students that is exciting visually, and offers escape doesn’t automatically preclude the positive aspects by virtue of the often less than academic subject matter. The world that we live in is visually stimulating and full of “inappropriate” content for kids. Children’s imaginations can be sparked for non-fiction through good fiction and while we tirelessly define an education with academics, we are losing out on arts, creativity, and the transformative power of the daydream.

Reading, like most things, is about striking a balance. It shouldn’t be entirely recreational or escapist, but it can’t be entirely cold either. Teaching reading skills directly without ever throwing kids into the fire to just do it with a high interest text or highly visual book is killing the love of reading…at least reading literature. Words and written language are everywhere, so the question becomes more about instilling a love of reading for self rather than as a utilitarian act to follow directs and ascertain which train stop you’re at, or which toothpaste to buy. Not all kids will love comics as ferociously as I did, nor will others love the same genres anyone else did by that merit alone…but dispelling the genre in authenticity when there are such benefits and such a lifelong richness of reading and interacting with stories possible seems shortsighted and irrational.

In the end, my mother was right. It doesn’t matter what kids are reading—whether it be trashy romance novels, non-fiction, comic books, or anything else. I love reading non-fiction, fiction, biographies; comics and prose and audiobooks. I hungrily consume everything. I still love to read because reading is a form of self expression. If children are avidly, actively reading for their own enjoyment then we’re all better off, because they are learning how to express themselves through the expression of others; they are expanding their minds through the minds of others. Open up the avenues of possibility! The more of them we close the poorer their imaginations and knowledge will be…and the less likely they’ll be to know the difference between their elbow, a bird, a plane, or Superman.
