Bouygues UK has completed construction of St John’s CE Academy in Grove, Wantage, on behalf of Cambrian Learning Trust and the Department for Education. The new secondary school will provide places for approximately 600 students aged 11 to 16.

A milestone for local education

Located alongside the existing Primary Site at the Wellington Gate development, the academy completes the first all-through education provision in the area, giving children a continuous educational journey from nursery through to Year 11.

The 6,074m², two-storey school offers:

• Specialist teaching spaces
• Sports facilities and playing fields
• Multi-use games areas

Designed to sit at the heart of the growing Wellington Gate community, the academy is intended to deliver long-term educational and community benefits for local families.

Built with sustainability at its core

Sustainability shaped every stage of the design and construction process. The school’s structure uses cross-laminated timber (CLT), reducing embodied carbon while bringing natural warmth and texture into the learning environment. Off-site manufacturing and a consistent construction approach also helped minimise waste and defects on site.

Further sustainability features include:

• A green roof fitted with photovoltaic panels to support energy performance
• Grass playing fields and a multi-use games area
• Sustainable drainage systems, including attenuation, swales and porous parking areas

Designed around wellbeing

The academy reflects Bouygues UK’s approach to biophilic design, combining natural materials, daylight, ventilation and outdoor connections. Together, these features are designed to support the wellbeing of students and staff, encouraging focus, learning and a stronger connection with the natural environment.

A landmark rebuilding programme at Holy Trinity CofE Secondary School in Crawley, West Sussex has been awarded to Bouygues UK, one of the UK’s leading construction companies. The £64million project forms part of the Government’s national School Rebuilding Programme which targets schools with buildings identified as being in the poorest condition across the country.

Scheduled to commence in August 2026 and complete in late 2029, the programme will be delivered on a live school site – a challenge that calls for the kind of meticulous phasing and operational expertise that Bouygues UK has developed across its extensive portfolio of complex projects. The school will continue to operate in full throughout the programme, with the phased approach ensuring zero interruption to students’ education.

Holy Trinity CofE Secondary School currently educates approximately 1,410 students, including 300 sixth-form students. The transformation will expand the school’s capacity to 1,500 students, supporting the Local Authority’s plans to permanently increase its Published Admission Number to an 8-form entry school, responding to a recognised need for secondary school places in the Crawley area.

Transformation of the school

Bouygues UK will manage the full programme of works, which includes:

• Construction of a new building (approximately 9,300m²) to the south of the existing campus, with the school decanting into the new facility before demolition of the existing buildings
• Refurbishment of The Young Building – approximately 1,500m² of existing space brought fully up to modern standards and handed back to the school
• Development of five Multi-Use Games Areas (MUGAs)
• Creation of a new landscaped recreation area
• Addition of a dedicated school car park

The new three-storey building has been designed around a clear departmental structure, that works for the staff and students. Standout spaces include a new assembly hall with bleacher seating and a performance lighting rig, a dedicated sixth-form social and study hub, a library resource centre, and specialist facilities including a darkroom, kiln and ceramic studio.

Sustainability focus

Bouygues UK is delivering the project with a strong sustainability specification. The new building will achieve BREEAM Excellent certification, underpinned by roof-mounted solar photovoltaic panels and a ground-source heat pump. The heat pump is an innovative renewable energy source that will significantly reduce the school’s reliance on utility supplies and cut its carbon footprint in line with national net-zero targets. Passive ventilation via wind catchers on the upper floor further reduces energy demand and improves air quality for staff and students alike.

In July, more than 100 staff and students from Moorfields Eye Hospital, the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, Moorfields Eye Charity, and Friends of Moorfields visited Moorfields and UCL Centre for Eye Health for the first time. Attendees were able to visit levels 5 and 6 of the new centre and speak to programme leads about how the centre has been designed.

The visit, co-ordinated by our site team, gave attendees an opportunity to hear more about the new clinical, research, and education areas they’ll be working and studying in when the centre opens next year. Visitors were also able to enjoy the panoramic views of the London skyline from the staff roof terrace on level 6.

Beyond the tour, attendees learned about relocation plans and the support structures we have helped the client team put in place to help their teams navigate this significant transition.

Since 2012, timber waste from Bouygues UK projects has been collected through our partnership with Community Wood Recycling (CWR), helping to keep valuable materials in circulation while creating environmental and social benefits beyond the construction site.

CWR is a network of wood recycling social enterprises that collect waste timber from construction sites and ensure materials are reused, recycled or repurposed wherever possible. Through this partnership, timber waste is transformed into reclaimed wood products, community workshop materials, recycled wood products and renewable energy sources, while also creating employment, training and volunteering opportunities for disadvantaged people.

Creating value beyond construction waste

Through this established approach, timber waste is diverted from skips and given a second life wherever possible. Long lengths of timber and sheet materials are reused within community workshops, pallets are transformed into reclaimed wood products, and remaining materials are sent to be repurposed into products such as chipboard, firewood and kindling, or used for waste-to-energy.

This approach helps us to:

• Reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill
• Promote the reuse of construction materials
• Reduce demand for newly sourced timber
• Lower carbon emissions associated with waste disposal
• Create employment, training and volunteering opportunities for local communities

Delivering measurable impact across our projects

Through this established approach, 337 tonnes of timber were rescued from the waste stream, delivering environmental and social benefits.

This resulted in*:

• 167.8 tonnes of CO₂ saved
• 142.2 tonnes of timber reused
• 194.8 tonnes recycled – 57% was sent for recycling into woodchip, used in the manufacture of particleboard, animal bedding, or as carbon-neutral fuel in power stations.
• 48 weeks of training – 42% used by the community for DIY/building projects or made into a range of beautiful products from bird boxes to dining tables. Smaller pieces were made into firewood or donated to the community.
• 182 weeks of paid work created

Under the partnership between landowner Southwark Council and developer Bouygues UK, the project will provide affordable homes for key workers including social workers, teachers, fire-fighters, police and NHS staff, enabling them to live closer to the communities they serve, reducing travel times and offering an improved work-life balance. It will also support recruitment and retention for the services that residents rely on.

Landmark affordable housing development

Located, at the junction of Abbey Street and Druid Street, with close proximity to London Bridge and Bermondsey stations, the site represents a significant opportunity to deliver new affordable housing in one of London’s most sought-after locations. The development will be the first delivered under Southwark Council’s emerging Affordable Housing Supplementary Planning Guidance, and the first under the Key Worker Living Rent GLA policy. This scheme sets a blueprint for future affordable housing delivery in the borough and London more widely.

The homes will be at Key Worker Living Rent and will be available to key workers with a combined household annual salary of between £26,000–£75,000 per year.

Community first

The development includes the delivery of a new community centre, featuring a large flexible double-height space and a number of smaller support spaces. The centre will be available for all members of the community for a range of events, activities and for hire. Southwark Council and the local community will work to secure an independent operator to manage the space closer to the time of opening.

Beyond homes, residents and the wider community will benefit from new landscaping, improved public spaces, a restored Neckinger Street, and a car-free neighbourhood built for sustainability – powered by solar energy and engineered to cut water and energy waste.

Next steps

With planning permission now secured, Bouygues UK is positioned to commence construction next year, with completion targeted for 2030. This approval accelerates the delivery of affordable housing and reinforces Bouygues UK’s commitment to supporting the communities in which it operates across London.

Section 1 has now been successfully handed over as part of the wider redevelopment of the college, which is being carefully phased to ensure teaching and day-to-day operations continue uninterrupted. The completed section includes 15 general spaces, 5 specialist science labs, an executive suite, group break out spaces, and a full commercial kitchen and dining room.

Once complete, the project will replace four existing buildings with four new buildings arranged around a central courtyard, creating a modern, sustainable learning environment designed by Jestico + Whiles and delivered using Bouygues UK’s standardised model school approach.

Funded through the Department for Education’s Further Education Improvement Programme, the redevelopment will provide Stanmore College with contemporary classrooms, collaborative learning spaces, upgraded sports and social facilities, and energy-efficient buildings for staff, students and the wider community.

The completion of Section 1 marks an important milestone in the overall programme, with the next phase of work now underway on site.

Pupils at the Barry comprehensive school have received 40 hours of targeted support to strengthen emotional wellbeing, confidence and communication skills. Wellbeing dog Milo has played a central role, helping young people feel calm, safe and supported throughout the sessions.

We are currently building the Barry Waterfront Campus and Advanced Technology Centre, two brand new educational developments for Cardiff and the Vale College in partnership with the college and the Welsh Education Partnership Company (WEPCo).  During construction, we are collaborating with organisations, such as The Baxter Project, to ensure the project not only delivers the highest quality buildings but also enhances the wellbeing of the local community.

Staff involved in the programme say Milo has helped pupils who were initially shy, anxious or reluctant to begin opening up and building trust with the support team. His visits to the school have enabled the students to show clear signs of trust‑building, emotional safety, and growing confidence. Many young people who began the programme feeling shy, hesitant or guarded have already begun to open up, engage more freely, and build positive relationships with the project team.

Dave O’Driscoll, from The Baxter Project says Milo’s presence helps create a relaxed and emotionally safe environment where pupils feel more comfortable expressing themselves and talking about challenges they may be facing.

The new Barry Waterfront Campus, located on a brownfield site in Barry’s Waterfront Innovation Quarter, will accommodate nearly 900 students and 200 staff, offering courses in areas such as art and design, hospitality, care, hair and beauty, and independent living. It will also include a public-facing commercial kitchen, restaurant, hair and beauty salon, gym, and café to provide real-world experience for students and the community.

The Advanced Technology Centre in Rhoose, near Cardiff Airport and Cardiff and Vale College’s International Centre for Aerospace Training, will support around 1,900 students and over 200 staff. It will focus on advanced engineering, construction, motor engineering, maths, and science, and feature three connected buildings centred around a three-storey superblock with workshops, sports and wellbeing facilities, and social and dining spaces.

This is the largest project being delivered through the MIM programme and developed by the WEPCo. Delivered through a single contract under the Mutual Investment Model (MIM) programme, both College campuses will be open and operational for students in 2027.

Alongside WEPCo and Cardiff & Vale College we are committed to delivering lasting social value throughout the construction programme. Alongside initiatives such as the Baxter Project, we will focus on engaging students in STEM, strengthening the local supply chain, and creating pathways into apprenticeships, training, and employment, supported by targeted construction skills training via the WEPAcademi platform.
