Race day might be the moment supporters have been training for, but great event fundraising starts much earlier. We spoke to Breast Cancer Now about the approach that helped turn more runners into active fundraisers long before they reached the starting line.
For Great North Run 2026, Breast Cancer Now focused on one simple goal: help supporters start fundraising as early as possible and keep them engaged throughout their journey. By prioritising fundraising page creation, timely support, and consistent communications, they created a strong fundraising campaign from the moment of sign-up.
Here’s how they did it and what other charities can learn from their approach.
Early fundraising leads to more money raised! Check out new tools and resources to support your 2027 Great North Run campaign.
For Breast Cancer Now, a key moment was when someone had just signed up.
Rather than waiting until training was underway, the team encouraged supporters to create their fundraising pages as early as possible. Every communication reinforced the importance of getting started quickly and making fundraising part of the event journey from day one.
Early page creation gives supporters more time to:
The team recognised that every extra week with a live fundraising page created more opportunities for donations and meaningful supporter engagement.
This approach aligns with a principle many successful event fundraising campaigns share: fundraisers who begin earlier typically have more time to activate their networks and reach their targets.
Creating a fundraising page was only the first step.
Once participants registered, Breast Cancer Now focused on delivering a consistent supporter journey throughout the campaign. Rather than relying on occasional updates, the charity planned communications around key fundraising milestones.
Supporters received practical advice, encouragement, and fundraising inspiration at different stages of their journey.
Fundraisers received guidance on:
Communications focused on:
Every bit of communication had a clear purpose and a clear next step. Supporters received reminders, “last-minute” fundraising prompts, and examples of successful fundraising activity from other participants.
And by tailoring support to where fundraisers were in their journey, the charity helped supporters feel connected to both the event and the cause they were raising money for, especially as event day was approaching.
Don’t underestimate the power of a phone call. Breast Cancer Now found that stewardship calls and a good luck call before race day helped strengthen supporter relationships and often coincided with fundraising spikes.
The final few weeks can be a critical period for fundraising activity. Rather than assuming supporters would naturally increase their efforts, the charity actively encouraged fundraisers to make the most of the remaining time by:
All this contributed to bigger fundraising totals, as well as a more confident community of supporters who felt supported throughout the entire experience.
The strongest results are often built long before participants reach the starting line. Here are three lessons other event fundraising teams can apply to their own campaigns.
1. Encourage fundraising page creation immediately. The sooner supporters create their pages, the sooner they can begin fundraising. Building page creation into early communications helps create momentum and gives supporters more opportunities to reach donors.
2. Create a structured stewardship journey. Supporters need more than a welcome email. Regular, purposeful communications help fundraisers stay motivated, maintain momentum, and feel connected to the cause they’re supporting.
3. Don’t wait until race day to drive results. Successful event fundraising is built through consistent engagement over time. A well-planned campaign creates opportunities for supporters to fundraise throughout the journey, not just in the final days before the event.
The most successful Great North Run fundraising campaigns begin months before race day. Whether you’re focused on increasing fundraising page creation, improving fundraiser activation, or strengthening your supporter stewardship, JustGiving has the tools and resources to help your team raise more.
]]>JustGiving’s October 2026 release brings major new updates, including integrated event registration and fundraising, contactless donation capabilities, and better donor completion rates through a simpler journey.
For more than two decades, JustGiving has helped charities turn generosity into action, while constantly evolving the fundraising experience. Whether you wear every fundraising hat at your charity or specialise in a particular area, our latest updates are designed to make your fundraising simpler, smoother, and more connected.
Here’s what’s new.
GivePanel Events brings registration, JustGiving fundraising, and supporter communications together in one connected platform.
For many teams, event registration and fundraising live in separate systems. That often means extra admin, duplicate data and time spent piecing together the full supporter picture.
Now you can…
As Ellen Whelan, Junior Challenge Events Manager at Cure Parkinson’s, puts it, “It’s helped us easily collect registration fees and get JustGiving pages set up automatically, without having to chase any fundraisers.”
Bring your event registration and JustGiving fundraising together.

Toucan JustGiving is already helping charities collect secure, contactless donations using just their phones, for free. And now, individual fundraisers can use it too!
Here’s how the free version works for your supporters and your team:
Get the free Toucan JustGiving app
Download for Apple (App Store) | Download for Android (Google Play Store)
And if your charity’s using the free app but looking for more controlled campaigns, check out the pay-as-you-go model for customised donation amounts, real-time reporting dashboards, and more.

We’ve also been improving the donation experience.
Our refreshed Gift Aid page helps donors understand exactly how much more their gift could be worth to your charity. A simple example like, “your £10 becomes £12.50” helps make that impact feel more real and immediate.
Plus, to help donors can see where they’re at in the giving journey, we’ve added a progress indicator during checkout.

The launch of GivePanel Events means charities can benefit from event registration and JustGiving fundraising in one place, leading to:
Whether you’re planning your next event or supporting your fundraiser community, these updates are all designed to help you move faster and achieve more (while spending less time on admin). We can’t wait to see what you do with them!
]]>One of the best feelings is watching your event fundraising target hit 100%. And one of the best ways to get there is building real relationships with your fundraisers.
Strong relationships lead to more engagement, memorable experiences, and ultimately, long-term loyalty for your cause. Champion Fundraising founder Davinia Batley shares a few simple but brilliant event fundraising stewardship ideas that won’t drain your budget.
Event fundraising stewardship ideas at a glance
– Have regular personal conversations
– Celebrate fundraising milestones
– Build a community around your cause
– Create a fundraiser buddy system
– Host regular fundraiser meetups
– Create meaning moments before event day
– Make event day memorable
Event fundraising stewardship is the process of supporting and engaging fundraisers before, during, and after an event. Strong stewardship helps people feel valued, stay motivated, and build a lasting connection with your charity.

Emails work well for big updates. But personal phone calls build real relationships. Try spending just five minutes every two weeks to call your participants. Listen to their personal stories, check on their physical progress. Share helpful training, fundraising, and nutrition tips too!
Celebrate their very first donation on JustGiving or their longest run before tapering! This simple act shows them that you care about every step of their hard work (because they do). Learn how to find your inactive fundraisers in your JustGiving Reports to see who might need a bit of extra support (requires Grow plan).

Marathon training takes a long time and can feel lonely. Bring your fundraisers together by giving your group a fun and memorable team name. Bonus points for also turning it into a hashtag, for example Muscular Dystrophy UK’s London Marathon #TeamOrange.
For more London Marathon and event fundraising planning advice, see our London Marathon fundraising guide.
Set up a buddy system to match experienced fundraisers with beginners, to make sure they feel supported and connected. Match first timers with someone who’s taken part before, and encourage them to check in regularly, share ideas, and celebrate their wins together.
Coordinate regular in-person or virtual meetups to give participants a space to celebrate wins and share advice. This can also help keep them connected (or reconnect them) with your charity’s mission.
If you can do multiple sessions, stick to a clear focus like event fundraising tips, training advice, and race-day prep, to avoid the extra overwhelm for fundraisers.

Create special moments in the lead-up to event day by mailing your fundraisers thank-you letters written by your charity’s team or beneficiaries.
Then add an EXTRA-personal touch by sharing good luck video messages. It’s a perfect final touch before the big event!
Going 26 miles is TOUGH. To keep spirits high during the actual race, create your own signs and bring blank cardboard signs and bright markers so others can too. Make event day even more special by asking your runners’ loved ones to join your official cheering spots.
Great event fundraising stewardship doesn’t require a large budget. Personal communication, community-building, milestone recognition, and meaningful support can help marathon fundraisers raise more money and build a stronger connection with your charity.

The best fundraising opportunities often happen in the moment. Discover a new way to turn everyday conversations, events, and community connections into simple contactless donations.
At JustGiving, we’ve spent more than two decades helping charities adapt to the way people choose to give, from online fundraising to mobile donations and beyond. Today, contactless giving is a growing part of that journey, with 50% of UK adults using mobile contactless payments at least once a month.
That’s why we’re excited to introduce Toucan JustGiving, a tap-to-pay app from Toucan Giving that transforms a compatible smartphone into a contactless donation device. Whether you’re fundraising at an event, meeting supporters in the community, or running a campaign in person, Toucan JustGiving makes it easier to accept donations wherever generosity happens.
Let’s take a closer look.
Collect donations wherever your supporters are

Fundraising opportunities don’t always happen behind a desk. They happen at events, in town centres, at community gatherings, and during everyday conversations with supporters.
Toucan JustGiving lets charities accept contactless donations directly through a compatible smartphone, with no additional hardware required. Simply connect your JustGiving account, create a campaign, and start collecting donations in person.
Better still, donations are reported and paid out alongside your existing JustGiving income, making it easier to keep track of fundraising activity in one place.

Toucan JustGiving is designed for both charities and fundraisers.
Charities can create multiple campaigns, add branding, set suggested donation amounts, and generate QR codes that staff or volunteers can share. This gives teams flexibility to support different fundraising activities from a single platform.
Fundraisers can connect the app to a JustGiving Fundraising Page or Campaign Page and collect donations face to face. Every tap contributes towards their fundraising total, helping supporters act on their generosity there and then.
Every fundraising conversation has the potential to become a donation.
For charities that want a permanent fundraising point, Toucan Giving also offers a dedicated contactless donation terminal. And while stocks last, eligible JustGiving charities can claim a Toucan Giving contactless donation terminal free for 12 months!
Each terminal…
It’s a simple solution for venues, reception areas, charity shops, events, and other fixed fundraising locations. Use Toucan JustGiving when your team is out and about, and use a terminal wherever you have a permanent donation point.

]]>The last few months have brought some of our most exciting updates yet…here’s what’s new and what it means for your fundraising.
Back in April, we rolled out some amazing updates designed to make fundraising easier to start and manage. Since then, we’ve been focused on something even bigger: helping fundraisers succeed right when their page goes live, then long after.
Here’s what’s new, including one of our biggest announcements yet.
Hope is our biggest step forward in helping fundraisers succeed: an AI-assisted coaching experience built directly into the JustGiving Fundraiser Dashboard (currently in Beta).
Hope gives fundraisers practical, personalised guidance when they need it most, helping them build stronger pages, share their story with confidence, and keep momentum going throughout their fundraising journey.
Hope starts with a short set of structured questions to understand each fundraiser’s goal, audience and confidence level.
Once that intent is clear, AI-assisted coaching kicks in, combining those answers with page details to suggest tailored next steps, from improving their story to creating share messages and supporter updates.
With Hope, you can count on the exact same gold-standard security, compliance, and privacy you already trust from JustGiving.
And Hope’s impact is clear: more fundraisers are already taking actions helping them reach their goal: they’re raising more money and their fundraising confidence is growing even bigger!

Keeping fundraisers motivated over time is one of charities’ biggest challenges.
We’re testing a new email series designed to help fundraisers back into action when their activity slows down. Each message features personalised content based on their page activity and fundraising progress to boost motivation and help them raise more for your cause.

We’ve added new resources to help charities get set up, plan ahead and make the most of big event moments.
If you’re new to JustGiving, or want a refresher on the essentials, our Getting Started on JustGiving webinar walks through the key steps charities can take to start fundraising with confidence.
For London Marathon 2027, we’re giving away a £5 donation to the first 5,000 pages created from 1 July 2026 for the Saturday and Sunday London Marathon 2027 events.
It’s a great reason to encourage your runners to create their Fundraising Pages early, so share the news with your London Marathon supporters and help them get off to a strong start. Get the message you can share with your fundraisers.
And to help charities get ready earlier, our updated guide to London Marathon 2027 brings together practical planning advice, campaign page tips, activation ideas and fresh strategies for keeping runners engaged through race day.
Together, these resources are designed to give you, your team, and your fundraisers the tools they need to start strong and raise more.
]]>More than 15,000 London Marathon Fundraising Pages are created to support good causes on JustGiving every year. And again, we see how early momentum is one of the biggest drivers of success.

Charities have run hundreds of event fundraising campaigns in the past year. And it turns out the high performers like North London Hospice, Diabetes UK, and Scope are all doing the same things. Here’s the first one.
This is the real difference-maker. Your fundraisers are excited, but they’re busy juggling work and life, and need you to guide them. That could be as simple as:
The easier you make it, the more likely they’ll actually do it!
Endometriosis UK and Prostate Cancer Research send new fundraisers an email welcome pack with information about their campaign, best-practice fundraising tips, and ways to connect with the charity’s team.
One of the fastest-growing activities we see from charities reaching their target is lots more communication.
Successful charities don’t wait for fundraising to “naturally” pick up. They’re proactive and use every opportunity to connect and build the relationship, right from the start.
And what’s even better is that strong communication can compound. Checking in early during the campaign builds confidence. Ongoing support keeps everything moving. And post-event communication increases the chances they’ll raise money for you again!
Barnardo’s sends a segmented stewardship journey to their fundraisers over 15 months.
Scope sent fundraisers a card and a KitKat at Christmas, reminding them to “take a break”.
Spinal Research hosts a post-event meetup at a local pub to meet and congratulate their fundraisers after a massive effort.
Nearly every charity we hear from says offering fundraisers incentives has helped raise more for their cause. Charities say the incentives that work best are usually tied to their fundraisers’ target.
Diabetes UK asks fundraisers to raise £800 by December and £1,500 by February for a free charity-branded kit.
North London Hospice asks fundraisers to raise at least 75% of their target for a free 7-day pass to a local gym.
Crohn’s & Colitis UK awards the person who raises the most money during their campaign an exclusive vest to wear on race day.
It’s clear the key right now is simplicity, communication, and incentives, And the right emails make all three a lot easier!
