The Splintered Fate of a Rogue

A pair of rogues arrive for Nintendo consoles this week, with some twists. For one thing The Rogue Prince of Persia is more of a roguelite than a roguelike. The game looks to feature one of Ubisoft’s oldest properties, in a new adventure. Fans can look for the “fluid, acrobatic and responsive combat” they’d expect, plus lots of spikes (natch’). Look for the Prince to bring the action to both Switch and Switch 2.

As for the other game landing, that’d be the Switch 2 edition of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate. An actual roguelike (with a brand new boxed CE by the way), Splintered Fate sends players on a series of runs through various locales, inspired by the TMNT franchise. Expect randomized (almost) everything, plus the ability to play as all four of the Turtles in co-op. As usual though, the headliners are far from all that are included in this drop.

That list starts with a pair of new titles in the N64’s corner of the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack service. Subscribers will be able to dig into yet another Ubisoft title with Rayman 2: The Great Escape, as well as the seldom seen (or mentioned) Tonic Trouble.

Hang on though, we’re not done. Other notables include the Switch 2 edition of System Shock. Yes, this is the remake from Nightdive Studios that saw launch on other platforms not too long ago. So if you’re a Nintendo Switch 2 owner who’s been holding off on digging into the game, now might be your time.

Classically styled action

It’s, all things considered, a pretty big week for the Switch. The latest edition of the Download is packed with games both big and small, plus a few retro titles that are kind of a big deal now that they’re back around and on Nintendo’s modern console. Chief among those, is Banjo-Tooie.

The Nintendo 64 sequel to the original, Banjo-Tooie is now a part of the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack lineup. So if you’re a member, then you’re free to fire up the front-end straight away and get to playing. But as mentioned above, there are other highlights this week as well.

Sega’s Sonic x Shadow Generations brings the 2011 classic back once more and with a whole new campaign attached. That focuses on the dark ‘hog Shadow, and will mirror the rest of the game’s ‘retro and modern’ mixture. This one’s getting some good pre-launch word of mouth, so it might be one to watch.

Also appearing this week is Yakuza Kiwami, which makes its Switch debut, plus Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven, Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake, Y’s X Nordics, and a pile of smaller releases. Check ’em all out in the listing below.

Probably the biggest new addition to the Switch’s roster this week, Sega’s latest Super Monkey Ball title is here… or at least, it will be in a few days time. If you know the series, then you probably know what to expect, as players will have to roll their simian-in-a-ball around a track. Super Monkey Ball Banana Rumble is set to additionally offer some pretty deep sounding customization options, new moves to give your character a leg up, co-op adventure mode, and 16 player online action.

If rolling monkeys aren’t you thing, then you might be interested in Metal Slug Attack Reloaded. A tower defense game (wait don’t tune out yet), MSAR serves up a “beginner-friendly” control scheme, and a look that’s fitting with the traditional look of Metal Slug titles. There’s also Moonstone Island, which sounds like an interesting mashup of genres, and those fresh additions for the N64 and Game Boy Advance corners of the Nintendo’s Switch Online service.

Nintendo has done a pretty good job of regularly infusing its Nintendo Switch Online service with new games. Base subscribers have gotten a healthy dose of those, while members of the higher “Online + Expansion Pack” tier have done pretty well too. If you somehow don’t know what that is, it’s a level of membership that adds even more consoles to the system’s ‘virtual console’ line. And one of those, of course, is the N64.

We’ve so-far seen a bunch of games hit for that branch of the service as well, with names both big and small. The just announced drop of upcoming titles though, is definitely in the latter category, with Extreme-G and Iggy’s Wrecking Balls. Both games have racing as a core4 concept, but the two are as varied as night and day. While Extreme-G is a futuristic, high-speed roller coaster ride, Iggy’s Wrecking Balls stars a cute lil’ dragon and some vertical (and spherical) racing action. As a head.

As of right now, it looks like neither title has been posted, but stay tuned. If we know Nintendo both should be up and ready to play in short order.

Not that Oblivion

“The Turok series is one of the classic touchstones of gaming and being able to provide the newest and improved version of Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion is a great feeling,” said Larry Kuperman, Director of Business Development at Nightdive Studios. “It makes full use of the latest version of our KEX engine, and we’re excited to share the game with players later this year.”

First released on the N64 back in 2000, Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion wasn’t the commercial hit that the first two games in the series were, and didn’t score quite as high either. Not that it was a bad game, but it did have a few things working against it. For one thing, it came out near the N64’s closing days, and it also suffered from some technical issues. Not that either of those things will likely be a problem at this point.

With Nightdive Studios’ just-revealed remaster of Turok 3, you can probably expect a game that’s polished to a near-perfect state. The developer has a pretty darn good track record after all, with incredible renditions of the first two Turok’s, and the likes of Doom and Quake (one and two) already in the bag.

Thanks to Nightdive’s KEX engine too, Turok 3 is looking great. The engine not only brings the game to modern platforms, but it also upscales it to 4K resolution, in which it’ll run at 120fps (on current-gen consoles and PC). Fans and those yet to play Turok 3 in any format can expect “upgraded gameplay, high-resolution textures, enhanced lighting and rendering, and support for console gamepads with platform-specific features”.

Here’s your first look at it in action:

In Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion, players choose between dual protagonists Joseph and Danielle Fireseed, siblings of Turok 2: Seeds of Evil protagonist Joshua Fireseed. Together, they must defeat the titular antagonist Oblivion and its followers, the Flesh Eaters, after the supposed demise of their brother at its hands.

Aside from looking fantastic, Turok 3 isn’t far off either. You can expect to see this one hit digital storefronts on November 14th, 2023. It’s en route for Xbox and PlayStation platforms, the PC, and the Switch.

Golfing in a galaxy far, far away

Okay so technically they’re not directly linked, but Star Wars golf does sound like something that might’ve hit a few white boards back in the late 80s/early 90s. I could see it, is all I’m saying. But though this week’s bigger releases on the Switch aren’t thematically related, they do share one thing. And that, is that they’re both re-releases.

First up, Mario Golf hails from the N64’s heyday, seeing original launch in 1999. While it’s not one of the Italian plumber’s main sporting-activities, it remains a favorite of that console’s devotees. And it’s now a part of the N64 corner of the Switch’s “Expansion Pack”, online subscription service.

Then there’s Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. Also a re-release, this new Switch title brings the Wii version back to life, placing players in the shoes of Starkiller.

If you don’t know who that is, he’s one of the most interesting Expanded Universe characters in the fiction, a secret apprentice of Darth Vader himself. I haven’t played the Wii edition, but the Xbox version had excellent controls, and terrific graphics (for the time). Maybe most importantly though, the story is genuinely good. If you’re a SW fan and haven’t played it, it’s probably still worth your time.

Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack

Paper for Christmas

This was something of a surprise. While Nintendo had activated the enhanced subscriber goodie-bag (awkwardly dubbed the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack) some time ago, there was no mention of games to come.

Late last night though, the company announced a surprise launch – Paper Mario. While this is just one game, deviating from the previous NES/SNES set of drops that saw a few games at a time, it’s definitely a welcome one.

The N64’s Paper Mario not only was a hit at the time, it also launched a whole new Mario series. That still continues to this day, as The Origami King was just released for Switch this past summer.

As for the return of that original though, here’s the skinny:

In Paper Mario, his vile viciousness – Bowser himself – has absconded with the magical Star Rod and lifted Peach’s Castle into the sky with the help of Kammy Koopa. Who will stop him now? It’s up to Mario (and you!) to save all seven of the Star Spirits, guarded by Bowser’s handpicked minions. Can you rise to the occasion and pull off a storybook ending?

Paper Mario arrives for .subscribers on December 10th, 2021. Just remember that the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack is a different plan than the base NSO one. If you’re a subscriber to the latter-mentioned only, then you’ll need to upgrade your plan before you can dive into the likes of N64 and Sega Genesis games.

Cruisn’ down the street

One of Nintendo’s most beloved classic consoles, the N64 was an excellent machine loaded up with great games. The likes of Goldeneye, Turok, Doom 64, Wrestlemania 2000 and others made it a staple part of most gamers’ playtime back in the late 90s.

On the flip side, one of the most promising new retro-themed consoles, the Polymega has just hit the market. Well, it has for pre-orders anyway, as the long-awaited console has started shipping out to them.

If you’re not familiar, the Polymega is a monster of a machine, able to access numerous classic consoles’ libraries. This comes by way of a two-fold system. The first is a built-in drive, which can play games from the systems like the Sega Saturn, PlayStation One, and more. The second is a modular scheme, with which gamers can swap out different cartridge components. So you can pop out the module that has the Genesis controller ports and cart slot, and pop in the SNES version, which is great for small kids, although if you also want them to play outside, you can look for solid wood playhouse designs to create one for your children.

A growing collection

It’s a pretty cool format that Playmaji has come up with, and one that looks to have a ton of potential. Polymega could be a complete, retro gaming powerhouse as the console continues to expand. That’s just what this new piece if news delivers too, expansion, as the system is getting an N64 module.

Playmaji CEO Bryan Bernal is quoted in the exclusive reveal on NintendoLife as saying “It’s been our most requested module since the first four were announced, and Polymega is well suited to support it. There are virtually no other options out there for playing the whole N64 library legally, outside of the original hardware — so it’s an obvious choice for us.”…Further, he was quoted as saying Playmaji is committed to “ensuring that nearly all games can be played without any complicated configuration or set up by the user”, an issue present with most forms of N64 PC-based emulation at this time.

Polymega

The N64 module will be region free, and obviously will also support original controllers. But there’s more to it as well, as it will include the Polymega Ultra Retro Controller.

A new piece of hardware made in conjunction with Retro-Bit, the Ultra Retro is based on the RB’s Wireless Tribute64 pad. So even if you don’t have any N64 controllers handy, you’ll still be able to get up and playing on day one.

As to when that might be, we’re not sure. There’s no launch date as of yet for the N64 module, let alone when open stock might be available for the Polymega hardware itself. The company does expect at least the latter to be ready for purchase some time in 2022, but we’ll let you know when we hear more.

Nintendo does… wait…

If you missed the news late last week, the Nintendo Switch Online service is expanding its collection of subscription-only games. No, there isn’t a new infusion of NES and SNES titles inbound (what happened to those anyway?), but there are 2 brand new sets of retro gems coming up.

One of those collections has been wanted, more or less, since the Switch arrived 6 years ago. Of course, that’s the fan-favorite N64 library. Nintendo will begin porting N64 games to their online service in style too, with a pretty slick collection of big names and niche faves.

They include:

• Super Mario 64
• The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
• Mario Kart 64
• Star Fox 64
• Sin and Punishment
• Dr. Mario 64
• Mario Tennis 64
• WinBack
• Yoshi’s Story

While those titles will kick off the games arrival, there will be mare to come in apparent short order. Also coming (at some point) will be:

• Banjo-Kazooie
• Pokémon Snap
• The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask
• Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards
• Mario Golf
• Paper Mario
• F-Zero X

Not enough for you? Well there’s more after that as well, as Nintendo says there will be “More To Come”.

This was a surprise

While it’s great to see N64 games hitting at long last, it was kind of expected at some point. What definitely wasn’t though, was the arrival of Sega Genesis titles.

Nintendo’s biggest competitor for years, specifically during the 16bit era, Sega is now teaming with the Switch creator and joining Nintendo Switch Online. And as with the N64’s debut, the Genesis’ launch is extremely solid.

It includes:

• Ecco the Dolphin
• Castlevania: Bloodlines
• Contra: Hard Corps
• Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine

Unlike with the N64 collection, there’s no promise of more to come here. Though I’d imagine that’s likely an oversight, since both the SNES and NES collections saw updates for some time past launch.

Like with those collections too, there will be controllers. Special N64 and Sega Genesis (3 button) controllers will go up for sale at some point soon, exclusively for Nintendo Switch Online members.

A new beginning

While all of this is great, there’s more to the story. The above won’t be available as a part of the standard Nintendo Switch Online, but will be included with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack.

The new, updated service will also include a “growing library” of NES and SNES games (ah so there are more to come), as well as 4 player, online gaming. So will the “Expansion Pack” service be replacing the standard Switch Online, and how much will it cost? Unfortunately, we don’t know the answers to those questions.

We also don’t know an exact release date for the service update, though we do know that it will be hitting some time in late October. So with it about a month off, I’d say we’ll hear more about Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack sooner than later.

There’s no doubt that it can be a little bit of a challenge to use your N64 on a modern TV. That is, if all you’re looking at is an HDMI connection. The N64 of course has no such option, outside of third party cables.

That’s where the EON Super 64 comes in. The tiny device allows gamers to connect their consoles to an HDMI hookup, with minimal muss and fuss. You basically plug the device into your console’s AV out, then pop any HDMI cable into that, and you’re off and running.

There is a nice little bonus however, that’s included too with the EON. It’s called ‘Slick Mode’ and it gives classic N64 titles a little bit more of a palatable look.

Pretty great looking honestly. I’m always up for a way to play No Mercy again, and this is definitely that. I’m also intrigued by the Slick Mode option, and what that might do for my beloved WWF (yes, WWF) title.

If you are likewise interested in what EON’s little device can do, then you’re in luck. The Super 64 is on the way in short order, it’s available right now via ” CastleMania Games, Amazon, and other retail partners.”
