The 419 Racing endurance team had a great 2020 season. At the beginning of this season, we weren’t real sure what our schedule was, but we decided no matter what… we’ll make it to all the endurance rounds this year.

We had a mountain of luck and good fortune this season to go along with some great people to help us secure the LW championship. We swapped a fuel pump and snuck in a qualifying lap of practice at Summit, we finished a race at Nelson with one link holding the front timing chain together, we even finished a stint with an unnamed rider yaking in his helmet at Barber!

Our good friend and crew chief from the beginning, AJ from SWG Motorsports was only able to make the first couple of rounds. So we had to rely on help from great people like Matt Fager, Eden Weston and Jon Wilkens to get us through these events!

We have some great partners that have helped us along the way as well.

Vortex Racing Fan Page – Always keeping us set up with the best rearsets, sprockets, and clip-ons in the business. We’ve done 2 seasons on their steel rear sprocket!

Vesrah and BD Racing – We did this entire season on one set of RJL XX pads! The best stopping pad in the business… and they’re durable!

Autolite Spark Plugs – We’ve done several endurance seasons on one set of Autolite XS4302 Iridium spark plugs! The best in durability and performance.

Dynamic Motorsports llc – We’ve just began to scratch the surface in our relationship with Doug at DM. We plan to defend in 2021, and DM will be a big part of keeping the Suzuki stuck to the track! Thanks for all the support! We’ll see you at the track next year!

A crash very early in practice put Jerry behind learning the track, and never felt like he got all the way up to speed.

BUT… the track was very fun and challenging, the facility is amazing, we had some great battles during the race with Champ and Carl, and the crew came to take care of business! It was great to see some faces we haven’t seen in a while, and even had a surprise visitor from Wyoming! If MotoAmerica comes back in 2021, count us in.

The 419 endurance team kept the podium streak alive with a 2nd place this past weekend in Pittsburgh! SWG Motorsports Matt Fager, and 419’s own Eden held down the pit duties to near perfection and kept us on track.

The BD Racing supplied Vesrah brake pads were mint for this hard braking track. The Autolite Spark Plugs helped kept the Copoulos built engine running strong!

We will wrap up the endurance season at the GNF in October at Barber! See everyone there!

Grab a donut, some coffee, and a comfy toilet seat.

The 419 Racing team set out for our first trek of 2020 to Summit this past weekend to compete in a WERA Motorcycle Road Racing and N2 Track Days endurance and sprint weekend.

Jerry and Jon’s last event was September, so they were looking to break off ~9 months of rust and remember how to ride again.

The weekend started with a N2 track day on Friday to learn the track. Jon and Jerry alternated morning stints learning where the turns go, and making some setup changes to the freshly frame-offed endurance bike. The fresh Mikey Alexander SS build felt great! During the 1pm session after lunch, Jerry took the bike out to quickly learn that it wouldn’t rev over 7k rpm’s. After a quick look in the pits, it appeared the check valve in the tank vent wasn’t allowing air to fill the tank. Jon gave it a quick disassemble and cleaning. But the session was done by the time the bike was back together, and as luck would have it – the sky opened up shortly after to thunder, lightning, and large volume of rain… so the test day was done.

Saturday morning the team, together with the SWG Motorsports team got hot pit setup and ready for the race. Jerry took the bike out in the endurance practice to quickly realize that the problem was NOT repaired. Upon bringing the bike behind the wall, the 419 team decided a fuel pump swap was the best course of action. The only spare we had was a 4-wire pump, and the endurance bike is a 3-wire harness. Jon did a lightning fast pump housing swap to put the 4-wire pump and filter assembly in the 3-wire housing. The boys got the bike buttoned up just in time for Jerry to make two flying laps and set a qualifying time. The bike was running great now.

We were gridded on row 7. Jerry got a decent start, and had no business being near the front going in to T1. After being on the receiving end of many passes, he settled into learning the track and finding some pace. After 1:45 on the bike, the fuel light came on, and Jerry pitted in. Jongo took over the controls. Similar to Jerry, he had to learn the track at pace and his laptimes worked their way down over the course of his 1:45 stint. Jongo brought the bike in with a fuel light at the 3:30 mark in the race, in 2nd place. With a lighting quick pit stop by the SWG Motorsports boys, Jerry got back out to finish up the last 30 minutes. After some spirited spot swapping with the 4 Dudes on a Twin team, Jerry brought the bike home in 2nd place!

After not being sure we’d make the grid just that morning, this was a great result.

Sunday brought the WERA Motorcycle Road Racing sprint races. Jerry blew the dust off of his sprint bike and gridded up for HWSB, LWSB, and F2. Team Meat’s Dave Belsterling was on pace though, winning each of those races. Dave drug Jerry down into the 20’s with a friendly tail tap in the LWSB race, but (3) 2nd place finishes was the result of the day.All in all, it was a great debut to the 2020 season.

The team was grateful to Summit Point Motorsports Park, WERA Motorcycle Road Racing, and N2 Track Days for figuring out a way to get racing green lit.

We’d like to thank our partners in this adventure that help us get to the track:

Before this partnership, we were customers of BD Racing; because in our experience, the Vesrah RJL is the best brake pad you can use on a superstock legal SV.

419 Racing has done a lot of racing over the years – and with a lot of racing comes a lot of brake maintenance. We have tried virtually every leading brake pad available – and we run the Vesrah RJL. It has the perfect combination of initial bite, feel and longevity.

BD Racing is the best place to pick up a set of RJL’s for your SV, or any other brake pad Vesrah makes.

Mother Nature this year was not polite to the groups involved in the Friday practice day and Saturday solo events, but Sunday made a drastic turn-around and was good conditions for early May racing in Northern Michigan.

The Lightweight Twins class grew in the off season. More bikes on the grid made for some “interesting” racing throughout the weekend. The finish of some races saw a majority of the field separated by one or two second … or less! It was literally anyone’s race to win and the crowd really enjoyed the suspense. The team can only hope that this level of competition continues through the rest of the season and the intensity remains. For sure the #1 lesson learned from the weekend: “It’s not over till it’s over!”

The following is a summary of the team’s results from the Sunday sprint racing:

Formula 2 (Note: 3rd through 6th were separated by less than a second)
#728 – Jerry Reeves – 3rd place
#592 – Jon Crawford – 6th place
#419 – Justin Maas – 7th place

Lightweight Twins Superstock
#592 – Jon Crawford – 2nd place
#419 – Justin Maas – 3rd place
#728 – Jerry Reeves – 5th place

Lightweight Twins Superbike
#419 – Justin Maas – 3rd place
#592 – Jon Crawford – 5th place
#728 – Jerry Reeves – 6th place

Off-season bike preparation, coordination of sponsors and physical training all made the winter months fly by. The season is now here and the first-race nerves have settled. Next stop for the team will be Cycle Jam at Road Atlanta in June. This event will see a combination of all regions joining for mid-season sprint racing.

Thanks to the sponsors that helped get the team ready for the first round of racing:

Fram, Jazz Motorsports, Spears Racing, Vortex, Motion-Pro, Pit Bull, Galfer, ARP Customz, Dynamite Designs, Amsoil, KG Clutch Factory and Sportbike Tire Service.

New ownership within the last few years has brought investment and changes to the property that motorcycle racers dream of. For this reason, it was a highly anticipated return to PIRC at the end of the 2013 season and witness first-hand all the new changes that have been made to the facility. As a team there were mixed emotions about the overall race weekend and some love/hate feelings coming from a very wet 2012 race weekend that left plans for finding even more speed.

The team loaded-up and traveled to the track late Friday evening. The weekend would be setup as another regional double-header, Saturday and Sunday would both be a regional sprint (8 laps) race format. Saturday’s racing provided some great battles not only within the 419 RACING team, but also with riders from the Mid-Atlantic region. A great example of this was the Formula 2 race on Saturday that had Jake Maas (#419) and Jon Crawford (#592) in a three-way battle to the finish line with regular MotoSeries rider Scott Nelson. The time on the clock between the three riders was less than half a second at the stripe!

Sunday morning weather brought overcast skies and a slightly damp track from the rain that came through the area Saturday evening. The morning practice was slightly off pace due to the damp conditions, but overall the race line was dry. A small amount of rain just before lunch would delay the start of racing by a few minutes, but the track was completely dry for Jake and Jerry Reeves (#728) during their first race of the day. Overall the two days of racing were a success for the team as lap times improved throughout the weekend and even further setup issues were resolved. Seconds separated the entire field each day and the following is a summary of how the greatest battles this season finished:

Saturday Races:
Lightweight Twins Superstock
#419 – Justin Maas – 1st place
#728 – Jerry Reeves – 4th place

Heavyweight Twins Superbike
#592 – Jon Crawford – 3rd place

Lightweight Twins Superbike
#419 – Justin Maas – 6th place
#728 – Jerry Reeves – 8th place
#592 – Jon Crawford – 9th place

Formula 2
#592 – Jon Crawford – 5th place
#419 – Justin Maas – 6th place
#728 – Jerry Reeves – 7th place

Sunday Races:
Lightweight Twins Superstock
#728 – Jerry Reeves – 1st place
#419 – Justin Maas – 2nd place

Heavyweight Twins Superbike
#592 – Jon Crawford – 1st place

Lightweight Twins Superbike
#728 – Jerry Reeves – 4th place
#592 – Jon Crawford – 5th place
#419 – Justin Maas – 7th place

Formula 2
#592 – Jon Crawford – 6th place
#419 – Justin Maas – 7th place
#728 – Jerry Reeves – 9th place

Jerry’s LWTSS win on Sunday was not enough to close the points gap on Jake for the North Central LWTSS championship. Friends and teammates off the track they may be, but on the track it is serious business between the two and the battle has been great to watch. Jon took to the track later in the day to clinch the North Central HWTSB championship. The points battle in Formula 2 and LWTSB were close going into the weekend, but the fast pace and consistency of Witchkraft Racing’s Joe Kraft would enable him to take regional title in each class. 419 RACING would like to congratulate Joe on his efforts throughout this season and look forward to bringing the fight back to the LWT classes in 2014.

With the regional season coming to an end, the team prepares for the long journey to Barber Motorsports Park in Leeds, AL for the WERA Grand National Final (GNF). Last year the team had a great time at the event and this year should be even more exciting as all three will be competing in the Expert class together. WERA invites the top finishers in each region to compete for overall championships in each class and the competition this year looks great.

People say “time flies when you’re having fun”… well, the 419 RACING team would certainly agree with just that. During the long trip home from last weekend’s final WERA North Central round at PIRC, several comments were made about how it felt like the season had just started yesterday. Stacking three regional rounds within 30-days on the calendar is fun, but at the same time very tough with families, real jobs, other hobbies and everyday life away from the track. There are no regrets from the time and effort put into this year’s season and 419 RACING is already looking forward to what is around the corner in 2014.

Of course it cannot go un-mentioned that 419 RACING appreciates the support from fans, friends and family that were able to attend the events throughout the weekend and the entire regional season. From the first round at Grattan Raceway in May, the terrific turnout at the Vintage Motorcycle Days and the action-packed last three races of the season, 419 RACING have had overwhelming support and it is much appreciated. Big thanks also go to the sponsors that helped the team along the way: Autolite, Fram, Jazz Motorsports, Spears Racing, Vortex, Motion Pro, Pit Bull, Galfer, ARP Customz, Dynamite Designs, Amsoil, KG Clutch Factory and Sportbike Tire Service.

Nelson Ledges is a familiar track for the team and always lends to some exciting racing action. #592 rider Jon Crawford and #419 rider Justin “Jake” Maas traveled to the track Thursday night to spend Friday participating in the open practice. Suspension issues during the weekend at Grattan left both riders looking for extra time to “sort things out” before the racing commenced on Saturday.

Damp conditions Friday morning cleared quickly as the sun came out mid-morning and made for great conditions during the entire practice day. Suspension is something difficult to test at a track like Nelson Ledges, as the surface is far from smooth. Nevertheless, Jon and Jake were able to get a good feel from each bike and spend most of the day focusing on race lines. Fuel delivery issues would plague the #592 bike during the afternoon and would later be diagnosed as a plugged fuel pump inlet.

Saturday’s schedule was slated for a single mini-endurance 20 lap race. Even though the race surface at Nelson Ledges is rough, the track layout allows the rider to get comfortable and “in a groove” early-on. Jake and Jon were able to get great starts as usual and improve on their lap times throughout the entire race. The 4th and 5th finishing positions were not what they desired, but a long session of race practice would benefit both during the Sunday sprints.

Sunday saw the arrival of the final team member #728 rider Jerry Reeves. The day would be filled with a typical sprint-race (8 lap) format. Each member of the team is in close-contention for North Central regional championships in their respective classes, so there was an added level of excitement as the races approached in the afternoon. First out on the track was Jon in the Heavy Weight Twin Superbike race, where he was able to run a smart race and battle to the front for his first win as an expert. Jerry and Jake had close battles for the podium spots as well and would continue to stay in the running for the championships in Formula 2, LWT SB and LWT SS. The following is a summary of the team’s results on Sunday:

Sunday Races:
Heavyweight Twins Superbike
#592 – Jon Crawford – 1st place

Lightweight Twins Superstock
#419 – Justin Maas – 2nd place
#728 – Jerry Reeves – 3rd place

#592 – Jon Crawford – 5th place
#728 – Jerry Reeves – 6th place

The weekend of racing officially set the stage for an exciting finale in two weeks at Pittsburgh International Race Complex (PIRC). The weekend will be a double-header format again and could lend to a very exciting weekend to close out the regular season of racing. Jake and Jerry are in a close battle to capture the LWT SS championship, Jon is currently leading the points in HWT SB and the LWT SB / F2 championships are within a few point margin to current leader Joe Kraft from Witchkraft Racing in both classes. It’s been years since the North Central region has seen such a close points race in the lightweight class and the team is excited to be part of it. Here is how the points look going into the final round at PIRC:

LWT SS
1. Jake Maas – 112 points
2. Jerry Reeves – 101 points

LWT SB
1. Joe Kraft (Witchkraft Racing) – 117 points
2. Jerry Reeves – 109 Points
3. Jake Maas – 90 points

Formula 2
1. Joe Kraft – 106 points
2. Jake Maas – 99 points
3. Jerry Reeves – 97 points

A “non-racing” event during the weekend took place Saturday night as the 419 RACING hosted a BBQ for all racers in the paddock that were interested. The turnout was great, the bench racing was world class and the food wasn’t too bad either. Because of the first try success, 419 RACING will carry-on this new tradition at the future races and encourage everyone to feel free to attend.

419 RACING appreciates the support from fans, friends and family that were able to attend the activities throughout the weekend and as always, a big thanks goes to the sponsors that made another weekend of racing a big success: Autolite, Fram, Jazz Motorsports, Spears Racing, Vortex, Motion Pro, Pit Bull, Galfer, ARP Customz, Dynamite Designs, Amsoil, KG Clutch Factory and Sportbike Tire Service.

Warm and dry forecasted weather made the team excited about returning to the technical layout of Grattan. The track is not close to home regarding distance, but each member of the team has an abundance of track time at the facility. It should be noted that all members of the team (and spouses for that matter) began their track riding/racing careers at Grattan Raceway. From first crashes to first victories, there are many sentimental feelings about Grattan.

The 3rd round of the season was setup as a “double-header”, meaning Saturday and Sunday would each be ran as a normal sprint race format. Each rider participated in three races each day and the action was abundant as usual. Legendary SV racer Joe Kraft from Witchkraft Racing was on hand to keep things honest on the expert grid. Through tough battles, the overall results for the 419 RACING crew were positive. The following is a summary of the team’s results:

Overall the team came away with podium finishes in 13 out of the 17 races entered. Lap times were some of the best each has ran at Grattan and setup changes proved positive results as the weekend went on. Dominance is not something that is developed overnight, but strong improvements were made and the team came away with good feelings from a track that has the word “tricky” as its middle name.

In the past race reports it has been noted that 419 RACING appreciates the support from fans, friends, family and sponsors. Well, Grattan was once again an event that humbled the team with the showing of support for what we do. The t-shirts that are worn by so many people at each event make it clear that 419 RACING has a large following and totally makes it worth every last drop of sweat that comes from preparing for AND racing these two-wheel machines.

As always, a big thanks to the sponsors that made another weekend of racing a huge success … and a LOT of fun!: Autolite, Fram, Jazz Motorsports, Spears Racing, Vortex, Motion Pro, Pit Bull, Galfer, ARP Customz, Dynamite Designs, Amsoil, KG Clutch Factory and Sportbike Tire Service.

This year was the first time that WERA would organize a regional race during the week between the AMA Superbike weekend and the AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days (VMD) events. Mid-OH and the VMD’s weekend has become a favorite stop on the yearly schedule for the team, so the opportunity to race with the region’s best was exciting to say the least.

Team members Justin Maas (#419) and Jerry Reeves (#728) traveled to the track early in the week to participate in the WERA regional races on Wednesday and Thursday. Extremely hot temperatures lead to tricky conditions as traction went past ideal due to heat. Nevertheless, both riders were able to complete the event on a high note and take away valuable championship points. Justin had a slight mistake during his first race on Wednesday, while running at the front of the pack, but was able to rebound for his second race and continue to compete without any problems on Thursday. The following is a summary of their results:

Wednesday Races:
Lightweight Twins Superbike
#728 – Jerry Reeves – 4th place

#728 – Jerry Reeves – 4th place
#419 – Justin Maas – 7th place

Thursday Races:

The AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days event officially started on Thursday night as part of the WERA crew departed the paddock and “vintage” bikes of all styles lined the huge complex of the Mid-OH Sports Car Course. The 419 RACING machines are far from being vintage, but the rules allow the bikes in several classes due to engine style and displacement. Friday was a day of rest for the team while the vintage practice hit the road course. Saturday and Sunday were both sprint style racing with each team member participating in three races each day.

Sitting out from the weekday racing to let a collar bone fracture heal, the #592 rider Jon Crawford joined-in on the action for Saturday and Sunday. Weather was again a factor in the morning on Saturday, as severe thunderstorms came through the area and brought a lot of rain. Wet conditions at Mid-OH are very treacherous and the team decided to skip practice with hopes that the afternoon would be dry. The weather cleared in time for the late afternoon races, but some adjustments to riding needed to be made due to cooler temperatures and a partially dry track. Overall the team had great starts and battled in several races towards the front on Saturday and Sunday. The following is a summary of the results:

Saturday Races:
Lightweight Twins Superstock
#419 – Justin Maas – 2nd place
#728 – Jerry Reeves – 3rd place

Lightweight Twins Superbike
#419 – Justin Maas – 1st place

Mid-OH is the closest track to home for the team and the turnout of friends and family was the best yet at the track. It’s humbling for the team to see everyone in the paddock wearing the 419 RACING shirts and cheering from the sidelines. As always, we truly appreciate the support from all that came out and look forward to the next round of racing at Grattan Raceway in Belding, MI on August 10/11.

Also big thanks to the sponsors that made this long week of racing a success: Autolite, Fram, Jazz Motorsports, Spears Racing, Vortex, Motion Pro, Pit Bull, Galfer, ARP Customz, Dynamite Designs, Amsoil, KG Clutch Factory, Bridgestone, Sportbike Tire Service and Held.

Owing to the fact that this was the team’s first ever try at an endurance race, the investment and preparation was kept to a minimum.

Jon was able to ride during a morning practice session to work any last minute bugs out of the bike and with a fresh set of race compound slicks mounted; it was ready-to-go for the 3-hour endurance race in the afternoon. Jerry arrived mid-day with his ultra-fan base (wife and sons) just in time to pull his #728 race bike out of the trailer and participate in a 10-lap sprint race. After a few laps into the race his times were not far from his normal race-pace lap around the Nelson Ledges road course. Finishing mid-pack in expert lightweight group was a respectable result given the amount of practice prior to the race (none).

The official endurance race started and Jon took the first stint. Without any previous endurance experience, it was a question as to how long each rider should be on the track. Jon had a great start and was able to create a 20 second lead over the field by the end of his first 40 minute stint. The first pit stop went well for being completely unrehearsed and Jerry was back on track quickly for his first stint. He was flagged by the crew to come in around the 38-40 min mark and another rider change was made.

The last two sessions were shortened, as the total race was slightly abbreviated due to a late start and a required finish to respect sound ordinance laws near the track at 6:00pm. Both riders had solid second sessions and were able to keep increasing the gap on the competition. By the end of the 2 hour and 40 min race, the 419 RACING team developed a lead of 2 laps over second place!

Given the success and pure fun that the team had from participating in an endurance race, it is sure to be something that happens again in the near future.

419 RACING would like to extend a huge thanks to all of the sponsors that made the endurance race a success. We could not have done it without support from the following: Autolite, Fram, Jazz Motorsports, Spears Racing, Vortex, Motion Pro, Pit Bull, Galfer, ARP Customz, Dynamite Designs, Amsoil, KG Clutch Factory, and Sportbike Tire Service.

Extra thanks go to the friends and family that supported the team during the race. From race strategy, re-fueling, fire extinguisher holding and cheerleading; all of the crew did an amazing job and is welcome to help at future endurance events.

After a long off season, everyone on the team was anxious to get on the track and expectations were high to achieve positive results. Owing to the fact that it was the first race and a lot of new changes had been made to the bikes in the off season there were a few question marks that needed to be answered when the green flag dropped.

The weekend officially started on Friday when #419 rider Justin “Jake” Maas went to the track a day early to participate in the Sportbike Track Time practice day. Weather was fantastic and the conditions were just right for Jake to dust off his machine for the first time this year. The first WERA event at Grattan was to be run counter clockwise direction and Jake did not have much experience with this configuration so the entire day needed to be productive. In typical Jake fashion, he was able to improve consistently throughout the sessions and learn what the bike had to offer.

Saturday was the first time on the track for #592 rider Jon Crawford and #728 rider Jerry Reeves. Both had an opportunity to practice in April on a cold Grattan track, but this was the first time either would be pushing their bikes at race speed this season. Two early morning practice sessions quickly brought Jon and Jerry up-to-speed and both were more than ready to race by the lunch break.

The format for Saturday was simple with just one race, but it would be a long one at 20 laps. When the green flag dropped it was a great battle throughout and the 419 RACING team represented well finishing 3rd (Jake), 4th (Jon) and 5th (Jerry) respectively. The long race gave everyone the opportunity to sort out a few things physically and with their machines before the “real” races took place on Sunday.

Sunday was a busy schedule for all as each rider was participating in three sprint (8 lap) races throughout the day. The first team member to hit the track was Jon in the Heavyweight Twin Superbike (HWTSB) class. This is not a typical class to see small displacement SV650 bikes, but the agile and light design still leave them somewhat competitive against the large twin engine machines. The race went well as Jon was able to get a great start off the line and kept a solid pace to finish 3rd overall.

The next race of the weekend was the Formula 2 (F2) race which included all three riders from the team. From start-to-finish the 419 RACING crew battled for the last spot on the podium. Each pushing each other to the true limits, it was by far one of the best races for the spectators to watch throughout the weekend. With a late-race pass Jake was able to barely hold on to the 3rd spot with Jerry in 4th by only a .03 second margin! Jon finished very close behind in 5th. From the sidelines, it was shocking how close all three riders were able to ride the entire race.

Lightweight Twin Super Stock (LWTSS) was the next on the schedule and would include only Jake and Jerry. Superbikes and 2-strokes were not allowed to participate in this race, so it was predicted that a 1-2 epic battle would take place between the two 419 RACING riders. Again, a terrific race from start to finish, but the well-deserved win went to Jake. With lapped traffic getting in the mix on the last lap, Jerry finished not far behind in second place.

The final race for the team was the Lightweight Twin Superbike (LWTSB) race. All three riders participated and once again, the fans were provided with a great show. Off the start, Jerry and Jon had great launches and got away with the front pack. Showing his experience in the expert class Jerry managed to run a flawless race and finished second. Jake caught and passed Jon half way through the race to take the last podium spot.

Overall the weekend went extremely smooth and everyone really enjoyed the close racing. It was great to see all the friends and family at the track showing their support. The next WERA North Central round will be in July at Mid-OH for the Vintage Motorcycle Days. The team encourages anyone that hasn’t been to this event to come out and take in the sights and sounds.

419 RACING would like to extend a huge thanks to all of the sponsors that made the first race weekend a success. From the off season rebuilds, to the on track performance we could not have done it without support from the following: Autolite, Fram, Jazz Motorsports, Spears Racing, Vortex, Motion Pro, Pit Bull, Galfer, ARP Customz, Dynamite Designs, Amsoil, KG Clutch Factory, Bridgestone and Sportbike Tire Service.
