Site Description:

Donatela Park is a project within the City of Avondale that is approximately 5.4 acres in size and located within an existing residential neighborhood. The park will include the following: recreational space with open turf, a loop path, fitness zone, covered playground, multiple ramadas, prefabricated restroom building, a full basketball court, site parking with electric vehicle charging, and plaza space for community gatherings. Additionally, the park includes retention basins to manage stormwater runoff.

Through critical concepts and collage taxonomies, they will refine the language they use to discuss their work and consider the broader creative landscape in which they operate. Topics include Collage Theory; Sourcing Materials, Copyright, Appropriation; Developing Materials; and Collage in Presentation. The workshop also addresses goal-setting, managing an art practice, building visibility, pursuing exhibitions, maintaining an inventory, and using art history to establish critical context.

The workshop is led by Ric Kasini Kadour, editor and publisher of Kolaj Magazine, as well as a writer, artist, curator, publisher, and cultural worker. Participants will finish with a deeper understanding of their practice; a strong statement of practice for communicating with curators, editors, and art professionals; a portfolio of consistent artwork or a plan to create one; and tools for growing or developing their practice.

Sessions meet Sundays, 4-25 October 2026, 1-3PM EDT. The early deadline is 30 August 2026, and the final deadline is 13 September 2026. The cost is $600 USD. ”In and Out of Balance”.

“In and Out of Balance” asks us to consider how visual weight, tension, and spatial harmony are managed within a work of art. Off-balanced works may predominantly be unsymmetrical, yet still maintain a sense of symmetry in part of the composition, or not. Symmetrical works mirror equal arrangements to create a sense of calm, order and stability. Within those works there may still be an element that is off balance, or it may be asymmetrical with unequal elements holding equal visual weight through clever use of color, size and negative space. Works may contain elements that radiate outward from a central focal point or axis in a balanced or unbalanced way. Deliberate weight shifts that make a piece feel precarious or unstable create visual tension. Off center focal points or clashing color values may create a sense of unease or energy that disrupt the expected composition. A sculpture may look like it might tip over, forcing the viewer to feel the risk of it being physically risky. Balanced works feel harmonious, anchored, stable, mirrored, poised, rhythmic and equitable. Unbalanced works may feel unstable, perilous, shaky, uncertain, fractured, tenuous, weighted or restless.

Many well-known artists deal with these ideas in their works including Richard Serra’s “Strike: To Roberta and Rudy”, Malevich’s “Self Portrait in Two Dimensions”, Andy Goldsworthy’s “Balance”, Tom Stodgon’s “Sandstone Overlap”, Piet Mondrian’s “Composition II in Red, Blue and Yellow”, Helen Frankenthaler’s “Mountains and Sea”, Agnes Martin’s “The Islands”, Sarah Sze’s “Triple Point (Pendulum)”, Wangechi Mutu’s “The Bride Who Married a Camel’s Nose”, Cecily Brown’s “Black Painting 2”, Amy Sillman’s “The Elephant in the Room”, and others.

Acceptable media for this exhibition includes painting, drawing, printmaking, collage, photography, sculpture or any other fine art medium.

In keeping with our love of music, we couldn’t agree on a song about the theme of balance, so we scrapped that idea and decided to honor Dolly Parton. Of course we both love “Jolene”, and we also love “Here You Come Again.” When we looked through her songs the closest one that dealt with balance is “Halos and Horns”.

Applications for the 2027-2028 NAEF Grant Cycle are now open! Please review the grant guidelines before completing your application. Applications close on October 1, 2026.

Overview of NAEF Grants and Grants Cycle

NAEF is a nonprofit organization that specifically provides grants to NAEA members. As such, other nonprofits and organizations cannot apply for our grants. As a NAEA member, you can submit a proposal for consideration. The annual grant cycle begins in late August when grant proposals for the year become available. NAEF grant proposals are then due by October 1.

The NAEF Board of Trustees review all the proposals during late fall and into winter. The following spring at the annual NAEA Convention, the Trustees hold a board meeting and approve the selected grants for funding.

Recipients of the NAEF grants are notified on June 1 and beginning on July 1, with the proper paperwork completed and submitted, they can request their funding. The actual grant period runs from July 1 to June 30. A final report is submitted to NAEF at the completion of the grant.

Eligibility:

The NAEF Grant Program is open to NAEA members with at least one year of continuous membership prior to application. For the October 1, 2026 deadline, applicants will need to have been members since October 2025, with no lapses in membership. State/province associations and NAEA recognized special issues groups are also eligible to apply. NAEA members cannot apply on behalf of the nonprofit organization or institution where they work.

NAEF Research Grants

Annual grants are awarded to art educators whose proposals focus on the themes and ideas for research identified in this document. Annual grants are awarded to selected art educators whose proposals seek art equipment to enable the art educator to improve the teaching of art and which are used to focus on student learning specifically related to the National Visual Arts Standards.

Teacher Incentive Grants

Annual grants are awarded to art educators whose proposals support projects that promote the improvement of the teaching of art.
