For some 15 years, David Brown had made a home in Washington Circle, living in a tent with a handful of others in an encampment. On Friday, that home was destroyed — his tent, clothing and other possessions were tossed into a dumpster by police officers carrying out President Trump’s crackdown on some of the city’s most powerless residents.

Left with a fraction of his things, Mr. Brown and his 6-month-old puppy, Molly, moved a block away and slept outside the Foggy Bottom subway station. Sitting in a wheelchair outside the station on Saturday, he was still baffled at what was happening. “Why is he doing this, for no reason?” he asked of Mr. Trump.

A nonprofit group in Montgomery County has released some interesting results from a year-long look at homelessness in that area.

From May 2017 to April of this year, street teams from Bethesda Cares made contact with 89 homeless people in Silver Spring.

At that period’s end, 26 of those people had been put into permanent housing. The county recently ended veteran homelessness and is now trying to end chronic homelessness.

Bethesda cares executive director John Mendez says that the real battle to save lives actually takes place in the chambers of the county council as each years budget is crafted.

The Washington Post - March 20, 2020 -

The man was still yards away when she saw it — a white face mask, glowing in the predawn light.

Gabriel Santos, a homeless-outreach worker, had woken up with cold symptoms. Not wanting to expose his clients to illness, he reached for the mask. It would be better this way, he thought. But now, as he approached the woman sheltering outside a Maryland building, its other effects became clear.

“Don’t come over here with no mask on,” shouted Debra, a chronically homeless woman who sat bundled in a winter coat, a black-and-white blanket pulled over her lap. “I said don’t you come over here!”

Nearly ten years ago I remember seeing a man, from a distance, walking late one cold windy night along Wisconsin Avenue in Bethesda. I was performing my street outreach duties at that time, around 10:30pm, because the temperatures were near zero degrees and our population of individuals experiencing homelessness needed hypothermia checks. The man I saw appeared to be homeless—he was pushing a cart with some of his belongings and screaming to himself as he walked quickly toward the Bethesda metro station. I could tell by his shouting that he was frustrated by the bitter cold, perhaps very scared of being homeless during the extreme temperatures. I watched him race into the area down near the metro tunnel to get out of the cold. I chased him down and introduced myself as the street outreach worker. I gave him a blanket, clean socks and gloves…and he told me his name was Ed.

Today I want to spotlight our meal program, and its program supervisor Lawrence Blake. You’ve probably met Blake if you’ve ever volunteered for us; he’s been running the meal program for over twenty years. He’s been a steady hand during this crisis. Every morning since the spread of coronavirus became an inescapable part of our lives he arrives in the kitchen, gathers supplies and prepares a lunch meal to go. When he is short on food items, he sends out a call to staff and we help him get what he needs.
