Gears of War 4

Set 25 years after Marcus Fenix defeated the Locust Horde once and for all, “Gears of War 4” finds Marcus’ son JD leading a group of ex-COG soldiers against a mysterious new threat. Though the game is pretty much business as usual for fans of the series, “Gears of War 4” does introduce a few changes that improve and shake up the overall gameplay. In addition to several new weapons (including our personal favorite, the Buzzkill, which shoots circular saws that can ricochet off walls), the emergence of extreme weather phenomena called Windflares affect combat with strong winds, flying debris and more. Story mode is also a lot more difficult thanks to A.I. enemies that pile on the pressure instead of sitting back and waiting for you to attack. Of course, while the single-player (or co-op) campaign serves as a nice refresher course for those who haven’t played “Gears of War” in awhile, online multiplayer is still the game’s bread and butter. All of the usual modes are here, along with newcomers like Dodgeball and Arms Race to ensure you don’t get bored. Though “Gears of War 4” isn’t as groundbreaking as the original, it’s an enjoyable franchise reboot that keeps everything that was great about the previous installments and builds on it.

Batman: The Telltale Series

Telltale Games has been on a real streak lately with high-profile titles like “The Walking Dead,” “The Wolf Among Us” and “Game of Thrones,” but the company’s latest episodic game features perhaps their biggest IP yet. Though it’s not as instantly captivating as some of the aforementioned titles, “Batman: The Telltale Series” delivers the tried and tested combo of choice-based dialogue, puzzle solving and quicktime action scenes that we’ve come to expect. The game doesn’t explore the World’s Greatest Detective angle quite as much as it should, but that’s largely because you spend more time playing as Bruce Wayne, digging into his family’s secret history after it’s revealed that his father may not have been the saint he appeared to be. With that said, the Batman sequences are a lot more fun, whether you’re devising a plan of attack, stringing together clues at a crime scene or battling one of his many iconic villains. As with most Telltale games, the storytelling is stronger than the gameplay, but fans of their click-and-point adventures (and Batman in general) will find plenty to enjoy.

LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens

The LEGO video games are always good fun, but the folks at Traveller’s Tales (who have been in charge of the long-running franchise since 2005) have really outdone themselves with their latest installment, “LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” In addition to retelling the events of the blockbuster film with the typical LEGO humor, the game features new story levels set before the movie, including one where Poe Dameron has to rescue Admiral Ackbar and another that reveals the mystery of C-3PO’s red arm. Although past LEGO games have been criticized for pretty much playing the same way, “LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens” seeks to remedy that with a few key changes. The new Multi-Builds system gives players more choice when solving puzzles (e.g., you can build multiple items with the same pile of bricks), while the shooter-style Blaster Battles and arena-based dogfights prevent the gameplay from getting monotonous. At the end of the day, it’s still the same “LEGO [Insert Movie Title Here]” game that the company has been cranking out for years, but it’s one of their most enjoyable yet.

Batman: Return to Arkham

Whether you never got around to playing Rocksteady’s first two Batman titles (“Arkham Asylum” and “Arkham City”) during their initial release, or you just want to experience them all over again, “Batman: Return to Arkham” brings the critically acclaimed games to the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 for the first time, completely remastered and featuring every piece of additional content. The upgraded graphics are without a doubt the biggest draw of “Return to Arkham,” and with the exception of a few quibbles, they’re a major improvement over the original versions. Though the gaming industry has changed a lot in the years since their release, both titles are still really solid stealth/action games that hold up remarkably well. That’s as much a credit to the outstanding gameplay as the visual enhancements that have been made, and it shows why Warner Bros. Interactive and Virtuous would invest the time and money to remaster them. Granted, it would have been nice if they had also included the series’ third installment, “Arkham Origins,” but there’s more than enough value here to warrant the upgrade.

Vinyl has made a huge comeback, and dear old dad may love a new turntable if he held on to his old record collection. Sure, we all loved the convenience of compact discs, iTunes and then streaming, but the rich sound of a vinyl record on a great turntable and stereo system is hard to replicate. Grillbot

There’s nothing quite like grilling out in the summer – that is, until it comes time to clean up. No one likes doing it, and it often gets postponed until you’re ready to grill again. Enter the Grillbot: a fully-automated, Roomba-like device that cleans your grill so you don’t have to. This little time-saver is super easy to use – just push the button once for 10 minutes, twice for 20 minutes or three times for 30 minutes – and even easier to maintain. The three wire brushes attached to the bottom of the unit are dishwasher safe, and you can choose between nylon, brass or stainless steel brushes depending on the type of grill you own. There’s even an LCD alarm that notifies you when it’s finished and a built-in sensor that will automatically shut it down if the grill is too hot. We were skeptical at first, but after using the Grillbot several times, we’re impressed with how well it cleans with such minimal effort. It’s time to throw away that old, frayed grill brush and embrace the future.

Lutron Caseta Wireless Smart Lighting

For those that still haven’t jumped on the smart house bandwagon, Lutron’s Caseta Wireless lighting system is a great place to start. The product line includes plug-in dimmers for lamps and wall switches for ceiling lights, both of which can be controlled using the free mobile app, the included Pico remote or on the face of the dimmer/switch itself. (The system also works in conjunction with Lutron’s Serena remote-controlled shades to really set the mood.) Beyond the basic dimming capabilities, you can also schedule specific lights to be turned on/off at certain times; utilize geofencing technology to turn on lights when you arrive home; and control multiple lamps and/or lights at once by creating Zones. Additionally, the Caseta Wireless system also works with devices like Amazon Alexa and Logitech Harmony remotes, as well as Nest, Honeywell and Apple HomeKit-enabled thermostats for controlling the temperature in your house. Though it’s a little more expensive than similar products, the quality and performance is so superior that it’s definitely worth the investment.

T-Fal Ultimate EZ Clean Fryer

Who doesn’t like deep frying foods? It’s relatively easy to do, and it makes pretty much everything taste better – from potatoes and wings, to crazy fair concoctions involving sugary treats. Of course, fryers can be a bit messy (especially if you plan on recycling the oil), which is why we love the new EZ Clean Fryer from T-Fal. Using a unique and patented technology called Oleoclean, the fryer literally filters the oil by itself, draining it through a sieve and into a removable plastic container underneath the unit to ensure that your oil is clean and can be used again. The fryer also features an immersed heating element that guarantees crispier, less greasy food and can be fully disassembled for easy cleaning; everything apart from the main unit (like the stainless steel bowl, lid and basket) is dishwasher safe. There are certainly more impressive deep fryers on the market, but you won’t find one that provides as much bang for your buck as the T-Fal EZ Clean Fryer.

Every man likes to think that he can protect his family from all the dangers that the world has to offer, but sometimes we need a little help. After all, did you know that unattended cooking ranges are the #1 cause of home fires in the U.S.? We can’t always be around to keep our loved ones safe, and while we’ve grown to trust smoke detectors to warn us of potential fires, the truth of the matter is that it’s still not enough. Created by firefighter Peter Thorpe, the Fire Avert works in conjunction with your household smoke detector by wirelessly syncing with the device so that when it hears the alarm beep for more than 30 seconds, it automatically cuts the power to your stove. Setup is a breeze (if you know how to use a surge protector, you can install the Fire Avert), and the benefits are obvious. Not only will it help prevent injury and death but property damage as well, which makes its $100 price point seem like a no-brainer.

RCA SLIVR Amplified Indoor Flat HDTV Antenna

With more and more people joining the cord-cutting revolution, HDTV antennas have become essential to retaining access to local broadcast channels like NBC, ABC, CBS and Fox (largely for news, sports or major events) for free. While there are plenty of models to choose from, the RCA SLIVR Amplified does the job without breaking the bank. It has a sleek profile that allows for it to be laid flat or hung on the wall and will blend in with most home décor. Additionally, the multi-directional indoor antenna operates up to 50 miles from broadcast towers and features SmartBoost amplification to strengthen weak signals and deliver better channel quality. Much like the other HDTV antennas we’ve reviewed in the past, there were issues with picking up a good feed of The CW, but that has less to do with the quality of the SLIVR Amplified than the network itself.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is an exciting return to form for the franchise that recaptures the childlike sensation of watching the original trilogy for the first time. It’s thrilling, funny and surprisingly emotional. While the inclusion of familiar faces like Han Solo, Chewbacca and Leia is great fan service that also functions as a passing of the torch to the new characters, director J.J. Abrams never lets you forget that this is their movie. Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac and Adam Driver all shine in their respective roles, although it’s playful droid BB-8 who ultimately steals the show. If there’s one complaint, it’s that Abrams packs too many characters into the story, resulting in several unanswered questions that are dangled in front of the audience like a carrot on a stick. But those kinds of mysteries have always been a part of the “Star Wars” ethos, and “The Force Awakens” is “Star Wars” to the core, blending the old with the new to produce an excellent continuation of the saga that leaves you wanting more.

The Hateful Eight

Quentin Tarantino’s first crack at making a Western may have resulted in the slightly disappointing “Django Unchained,” but his second attempt is a much-improved genre piece that represents his most accomplished work behind the camera to date. While Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Walton Goggins all deliver excellent work, Samuel L. Jackson’s show-stopping turn is the real standout, chewing up scenery with every juicy monologue and sly look. Granted, the first half of the film moves like molasses as Tarantino gets all of his pieces on the board, but the pacing is intentional, slowly building to a boil that spills out into a flurry of violence in the final hour. Though “The Hateful Eight” is filled with the same self-indulgent tendencies that fans have come to expect from the director’s movies, this Agatha Christie-styled whodunit is a lot of fun thanks to a smartly crafted script, some outstanding camerawork that benefits from the 65mm film format, and riotous performances from the cast.

Game of Thrones: The Complete Fifth Season

“Game of Thrones” fans were extremely critical of the show’s fifth season, but as the HBO drama enters its final stretch, transitioning from the superb second act of George R.R. Martin’s fantasy epic was always going to be difficult. The fact that creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were able to pull it off without sacrificing quality is a small miracle. It’s not without its flaws, but for the most part, Season Five does an excellent job of advancing the narrative while digging even deeper into the world’s rich mythology. It also serves up some of the series’ best moments thus far, including the Battle of Hardhome, Cersei’s walk of shame, and of course, the murder of Jon Snow. As has become standard, the Blu-ray set features hours of great bonus material, but for those that don’t already own the previous seasons, we’d recommend investing in the excellent Steelbook versions instead. Though Season Five isn’t available at this time, you can pick up the first four seasons, which, in addition to some awesome packaging, also includes Dolby Atmos audio technology, the closest you’ll get to actually being in Westeros.

Creed

After garnering critical acclaim for his directorial debut, “Fruitvale Station,” the last thing anyone expected from Ryan Coogler’s follow-up was a spin-off/sequel to a movie franchise that’s last meaningful installment was released 30 years ago. But while it may have seemed like a strange career move at the time, “Creed” is an energizing addition to the boxing series that succeeds as a respectful passing of the torch and one of the best “Rocky” films ever made. Michael B. Jordan and Sylvester Stallone are both excellent in their roles, especially the latter, who delivers his finest work in years with a subtler, more emotional performance than we’re used to seeing from the actor. Coogler, meanwhile, makes the transition from indie to mainstream filmmaking remarkably well; he provides all the usual crowd-pleasing moments without sacrificing the kind of intimate, character-driven storytelling that made “Fruitvale Station” so effective. Though “Creed” follows the 1976 original a little too closely at times, it does enough to stand on its own while still paying homage to the “Rocky” legacy.

Fargo: Year Two

Unlike “True Detective,” which fell victim to the all-too-familiar sophomore slump, “Fargo” positively thrived in Season Two, perfectly towing the line between black comedy and crime thriller. A big part of the show’s success is just how well it’s cast from the top down. Though Patrick Wilson, Kirsten Dunst and Jeffrey Donovan (as the eldest and nastiest of the Gerhardt brood) are among the standouts, there’s not a single weak link in the entire ensemble. The writing also continues to be top-notch – from the sparkling dialogue, to the excellent character development, to the smartly plotted narrative that keeps you coming back for more – while the show’s absurdist tone works even better in a period setting like the late 1970s. Creator Noah Hawley is in high demand these days, and for good reason, because he’s once again crafted a funny, engaging and richly developed crime saga that works both as a prequel to the previous season as well as its own standalone story.

Deadpool

The road to bringing “Deadpool” to the big screen may have been riddled with challenges, but it only makes the finished product that much more satisfying, because it’s a fresh and wildly entertaining action-comedy that demonstrates why studios should take more risks. Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick’s screenplay nails the dark, twisted and juvenile tone of the wisecracking antihero, and the decision to dole out his backstory in bits and pieces via flashback is a clever way of getting around the tediousness of the typical superhero origin story. The film also completely earns its “R” rating with enough violence and foul-mouthed language to please diehard fans. But while “Deadpool” has clearly been made with those fans in mind, the movie stretches beyond sheer fan service thanks to the strength of the script and Ryan Reynolds’ pitch-perfect performance to deliver a hilariously self-aware take on the genre that audiences unfamiliar with the character will enjoy as well.

The Martian: Extended Edition

Although it’s the third film in as many years about astronauts in distress, “The Martian” is a smart, captivating and humorous adaptation of Andy Weir’s bestselling novel that covers very different narrative and emotional territory than “Gravity” and “Interstellar.” For starters, it’s a lot more uplifting than most sci-fi fare, eschewing the usual doom-mongering for a story about the power of optimism and perseverance that also doubles as one heckuva recruitment video for NASA. Matt Damon is perfectly cast as the Everyman astronaut forced to “science the shit” out of his seemingly impossible predicament, while the supporting cast is absolutely stacked with talent. This is hands down Ridley Scott’s best movie since “Gladiator,” and it owes a lot to Drew Goddard’s Oscar-nominated screenplay, which takes a lighthearted approach to the high-stakes drama in order to produce one of the most purely entertaining crowd-pleasers in years. Though the extra 10 minutes of footage in the extended cut is hardly noticeable, the new bonus material – including an audio commentary by Scott, Goddard and Weir – is worth the double dip.

The Big Short

The 2008 housing market crash was no joke, which is why it might come as a surprise that “The Big Short” was directed by the same man responsible for goofball comedies like “Anchorman” and “Talladega Nights.” But while Adam McKay isn’t the first person you’d think of to direct a movie about the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, he’s produced a darkly humorous examination of a nationwide disaster so ridiculous that it’s difficult not to laugh. McKay and co-writer Charles Randolph do a great job of breaking down the complex financial jargon into something the average moviegoer can understand, turning what could have been a dull and dense PowerPoint presentation on mortgage loans into an entertaining lesson about just how messed up the whole financial crisis really was. McKay’s docudrama approach isn’t entirely successful, but the movie’s flaws are offset by some solid performances and a steady stream of humor that makes the infuriating subject matter a little easier to swallow, even if we seem doomed to repeat those same mistakes again.

Spotlight

Tom McCarthy’s “Spotlight” may be one of the most low-key awards contenders in quite some time, relying on top-notch acting and writing to recount the fascinating true story that changed the way we looked at the Catholic Church forever. It’s just a really well-made movie, and the best one about investigative journalism since “All the President’s Men,” which creates suspense from the seemingly boring daily grind of searching through documents and chasing down leads. Every single actor plays their part and plays it extremely well, working together as an ensemble to serve the story instead of a particular character. The same goes for McCarthy and Josh Singer’s disciplined script, which avoids the allure of sensationalizing events or being exploitative. “Spotlight” lets the story speak for itself, and though it’s one of great importance, the film is first and foremost a celebration of the journalistic process that made it possible for the courage of a few to be heard by the entire world.

Veep: The Complete Fourth Season

Julia Louis-Dreyfus has dominated her category at the Emmys for the last four years with her performance as Selina Meyer on “Veep,” and for very good reason. Though the actress has been a perennial nominee since “Seinfeld” (and even won a couple times before), the HBO comedy is perhaps the crowning achievement of her career. “Veep” is hands-down the funniest show on TV, boasting razor-sharp writing that skewers the political process, like in this season’s hilarious “B/ill” and “Election Night”; an excellent supporting cast made even better by guest star Hugh Laurie; and a penchant for audacious plot twists – for instance, the decision to make Selina president, rendering the show’s title irrelevant in the process. Although the Season Four cliffhanger casts uncertainty on just how long she’ll hold that position, it’s a clever way of shaking up the status quo and providing an even bigger stage for Selina and her team’s merry-go-round of failure and humiliation. If you think the real-life presidential election is a joke, you haven’t seen anything yet.

Silicon Valley: The Complete Second Season

“Silicon Valley” relies on such a frustrating amount of manufactured conflict to drive the story each season that it would be painful to watch if the show wasn’t so funny. But it is funny – really funny, in fact – thanks to creator Mike Judge’s absurdist humor and the vastly underrated ensemble cast. Though everyone plays their role to perfection, Thomas Middleditch, Martin Starr and Kumail Nanjiani are the real standouts as the main trio behind Pied Piper’s success. Guest star Chris Diamantopoulos also delivers some good work as a douchebag billionaire modeled after Mark Cuban, while Josh Brener’s Big Head is given a bigger part to play. The attempt to replicate the whiteboard hilarity of last year’s season finale (“Optimal Tip-to-Tip Efficiency”) isn’t quite as memorable, but the episode in question (“Homicide,” in which Starr and Nanjiani’s feuding programmers debate the morality of letting an arrogant stuntman kill himself) is so well written that it demonstrates how great “Silicon Valley” can be when it’s firing on all cylinders.

Star Wars: Battlefront

If you’ve ever wanted to know what it would be like to be a part of the “Star Wars” universe, Electronic Arts’ “Star Wars: Battlefront” lets you live out your ultimate fantasy by dropping you into the middle of the action in some of the most famous locations from the original trilogy. Whether assuming the role of a Rebel soldier or Stormtrooper fighting on the ground, an X-Wing or TIE pilot engaged in a massive dogfight in the skies, or as one of the many legacy characters like Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader, this is “Star Wars” fan service at its very best. Boasting gorgeous, photorealistic visuals and addictive gameplay, “Battlefront” is the most enjoyable “Star Wars” game since “Knights of the Old Republic.” Though the single player/co-op modes aren’t very exciting (they’re mostly just a place to hone your skills and waste a few hours with a friend), the online multiplayer is where the game really shines. There are nine modes to choose from – including favorites like Fighter Squadron, Heroes vs. Villains and Supremacy – with each one delivering a unique experience from the others. “Battlefront” is the “Star Wars” game that fans have been waiting for, and with more content planned for the future, it can only get better.

FIFA 16

How do you make a great game even better? That’s the challenge put forth each year to EA Sports and their “FIFA” franchise, and every time, they respond in brilliant fashion. Though there aren’t any major changes to the gameplay, “FIFA 16” has implemented some small but important refinements to deliver the most authentic soccer simulation yet. On the field, defending has been given a complete facelift, including the ability to defend better as a unit with enhanced AI awareness, goalkeepers who make less mistakes, and improved tackling mechanics. The EA Sports team has also added something called Passing with Purpose that allows you to ping driven ground passes to teammates in tight spaces, as well as No Touch Dribbling, which gives you more creativity on the ball. Off the field, the changes are even bigger, headlined by the announcement that you can now play as one of 12 Women’s National Teams in a variety of game modes. Career Mode has also received two of the most requested features – pre-season tournaments and player training to increase stats – while Ultimate Team has added a new mode called FUT Draft where you build a team by picking each position from a five-player draw and then compete in challenges to win rewards. This is the most definitive edition of “FIFA” yet, and it’s an absolute must-have for any soccer fan.

Disney Infinity 3.0

The Marvel Universe took center stage in last year’s edition of Disney’s toys-to-life video game franchise, so it only seemed natural that “Star Wars” would play a key role in “Disney Infinity 3.0,” especially with the new film due out in time for Christmas. But while George Lucas’ space adventure saga is undoubtedly the main draw, there’s a lot to love about the latest installment, which makes some big strides towards improving the game’s all-around experience. In addition to some updated Toy Box features, there are two expansion games – the top-down dungeon crawler “Toy Box Takeover” and the kart racer “Toy Box Speedway” – that add extra value to your Infinity collection, as well as three new Play Sets and more than 30 new figures, including your favorite “Star Wars” characters, the “Inside Out” gang, Disney classics like Mickey and Minnie Mouse, and Hulkbuster and Ultron from the latest “Avengers” movie. That’s a lot of content for one game (and with plenty more on the way), but it offers something for everyone, because while “Disney Infinity” has always been a surefire hit with kids, the addition of “Star Wars” suddenly makes it a lot more appealing to adults too.

Mortal Kombat X

After 2011’s “Mortal Kombat” brought the long-running fighting series back from the dead by basically hitting the reset button on the whole franchise, “Mortal Kombat X” makes some small adjustments to the gameplay while pushing the story into brave new territory. In addition to injecting some much-needed vitality into the series with several new characters that effortlessly blend into the universe alongside veterans like Johnny Cage, Sub-Zero and Scorpion, “Mortal Kombat X” features one of the best story modes that we’ve ever seen in a fighting game. Though it’s very cinematic in nature, incorporating fights throughout each character’s section of the overarching story, it feels a lot more immersive compared to other titles that rely heavily on cutscenes, like you’re actually part of the action. The only other notable change is the ability to choose between three different fighting styles for every character, granting players greater control over how they strategize against certain opponents. Of course, it wouldn’t be “Mortal Kombat” without some gruesome and inventive combat, and “Mortal Kombat X” delivers that in spades. In fact, it relishes those gloriously over-the-top moments a little too much, which is exactly what fans have come to expect from the ultraviolent series.

Guitar Hero Live

Just when it looked like “Guitar Hero” had strummed its last note, the stagnant series has come roaring back to life with this latest edition, which reinvents the popular rhythm game from the ground up. For starters, the guitar has been completely redesigned – replacing the colored, five-button layout with six fret buttons in two adjacent rows at the top of the neck – and though there’s a bigger learning curve involved, it simulates playing a real guitar better. The game itself is divided into two modes: Live and TV. The former places you in the role of a guitarist in various fictional bands performing at a music festival, and it’s all presented in full-motion video from your perspective, capturing the energy of a live show. However, while Live provides a fun but cheesy introduction to the game’s new mechanics, Guitar Hero TV is where it really shines, particularly the 24/7 music channels, which are divided into themed programming blocks that you can jump in and out of on a whim, all while competing against other players to unlock new Hero Powers and more. Though the song collection isn’t as strong as past installments, there’s so much potential within TV mode that the experience will improve as the catalog grows.

SOL REPUBLIC Shadow Wireless Headphones

One of the hottest trends on the headphones market these days is those futuristic looking Bluetooth headsets that people wear around their necks. But while they definitely take a little getting used to compared to more traditional headphones, it’s easy to see what makes them so appealing to some consumers. SOL REPUBLIC recently released its own version of a wireless, around-the-neck headset with the Shadow, and not only is it incredibly lightweight and flexible, but it rests so comfortably on your neck that you sometimes forget it’s even there. In addition to boasting CD-quality audio that’s good enough for the average user, the Shadow features a built-in microphone and three-button remote, as well as a fairly decent battery with up to 8 hours of playback and a week of standby time. It can also control two devices (like your phone and laptop) at the same time, and is both water and sweat resistant, so you can wear it just about everywhere you go without worrying about damage. Although it would have been nice if the headset included retractable earbuds like some of its competitors, it’s not a deal breaker, especially when there’s so much other stuff to love about the Shadow.

The only thing more important than protecting your smartphone while running is protecting yourself, especially at night, which is why we love this new armband from the mobile device accessories gurus at Griffin. In addition to being compatible with a number of different devices – including the three most recent versions of the Apple iPhone and Samsung Galaxy, as well as less popular models like the HTC One and Moto X – the LightRunner is surprisingly lightweight for its size and easy to get on and off your arm. Though the tight fit makes it impossible to use with an accompanying case (unless you have one of Apple’s minimalist cases), it does a decent job of protecting against potential dents, scuffs and screen scratches. The best thing about the LightRunner, however, is in its name, as it also features LED lights embedded in both sides of the armband that can be set to three different light patterns – continuous, repeating and flashing – so that drivers, bikers and anyone else you may encounter on your nighttime run know exactly where you are. If you’re a big runner and heading off to college, this is a must-have item.

Moleskine Wallet and iPad Mini Portfolio

A lot of people know Moleskine as the company behind those simple yet stylish notebooks – and rightfully so, because that’s where its bread has been buttered for the past two decades – but in recent years, Moleskine has expanded its product line to other areas as well, including laptop bags, mobile device cover, and even wallets, passport holders and luggage tags. Basically, anything where leather is involved. We had the chance to sample two of these items – the Black Leather Horizontal Wallet and the Tablet Slim Cover for iPad Mini – and loved them both. Though the wallet is a little wider than traditional styles, it features quality leather, plenty of card slots on the outside and inside, and a bright green splash of color in the cash pocket. Meanwhile, the tablet cover combines the protection you need with the functionality of a typical Moleskine product by including an internal rubber shell for the iPad Mini and a Voltant Reporter Notebook that can be placed on either side of the device so you have somewhere to jot down notes or doodle during class. Of course, if neither of these fit your needs, you can’t go wrong with a Moleskine notebook or weekly planner, which come in a variety of colors and styles.

Fitbit Charge HR

There’s an ungodly number of fitness trackers these days, but after testing out some of the other major players in the game, the Fitbit Charge HR (available at Walmart) is hands-down the best of the bunch. The “HR” refers to the included heart rate monitor located on the underside of the band, which provides additional data like your daily resting heart rate the time spent in different heart rate zones (peak, cardio and fat burn) during exercise. The tracker is housed in a rubber watch band that’s a lot more comfortable than the bangle-styled Jawbone and Nike Fuelband, and it contains a small display screen that lets you cycle through the following data: clock, steps, heart rate, distance, calories burned and floors climbed. When used in conjunction with the mobile app or online dashboard, you can track specific workout sessions and monitor your sleeping habits (including time spent awake or in a restless state), and when paired with your phone via Bluetooth, the display shows Caller ID notifications. The Fitbit Charge HR also has pretty great battery life, so you can spend more time using it instead of waiting for it to charge, which is the whole point of the product in the first place.

SOUL Run Free Pro Headphones

We’ve reviewed some of SOUL’s on-ear headphones in the past, and while they proved to be a solid alternative to the more popular brands on the market, they never really wowed us in any way. However, that’s not the case with their latest in-ear model, the Run Free Pro, which improves upon other likeminded wireless headphones by getting rid of that cumbersome earhook and utilizing an interchangeable ear lock system that provides a custom fit guaranteed to stay put no matter how active your lifestyle. Grovemade iPhone Dock

Grovemade produces some of the best-looking wooden iPhone accessories on the market, and their new docks are no exception, immediately classing up any desk, nightstand or table with its elegant but simple design. Though deceptively heavy at three pounds, the dock is not only extremely durable, but guaranteed to stay put whether you’re trying to unplug your phone one-handed or use your device while docked, like making calls on FaceTime. The wooden portion is made from domestically sourced Oregon walnut or Eastern Hardrock maple (depending on which version you purchase), and then hand-sanded and finished with a natural oil and wax blend. You can also remove the wooden cap if you’d rather showcase the steel base underneath, but it isn’t as stylish, and it kind of defeats the purpose of buying a Grovemade dock. Our only major issue with the product is that, although it’s compatible with the iPhone 5, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, it isn’t universal, meaning you’ll have to buy additional docks if you have different models in your household or plan on upgrading in the future.

The Wire: The Complete Series

Now that “Breaking Bad” has completed its remarkable five-year run, there’s a good chance that some people are rethinking their decision to christen “The Wire” as the best show in television history, but for our money, the HBO crime drama still owns the top spot. A gritty, intelligent, complex and well-acted series that fired on all cylinders throughout most of its five seasons, “The Wire” represents TV drama at its finest, anchored by a fantastic ensemble cast that rivals “Game of Thrones” in its sheer size and ability to squeeze great performances out of even the smallest roles. Digitally re-mastered in a new 16:9 widescreen ratio and broadcast in its entirety earlier this year, the complete series makes its Blu-ray debut just in time for Father’s Day. Though some have argued that the change from the original 4:3 ratio disrespects the show’s intended visual composition, it’s something that will likely only bother a select few, because it looks absolutely stunning. Many of the included extras have been carried over from the previous DVD release, but there is a brand new cast and crew Q&A from the Paley Center for Media’s reunion panel that’s a must-watch for all fans of the show.

Frank Sinatra: Five Film Collection

It’s not the first time that a studio has released a Frank Sinatra movie collection in conjunction with his birthday, but Warner Bros.’ five-disc set – which spans two decades in the singer-turned-actor’s film career – is the first one to ever be released on Blu-ray. Featuring some of Sinatra’s finest work in front of the camera, the collection includes a trio of musicals (“Anchors Aweigh,” “On the Town” and “Guys and Dolls”) and two of the best crime movies of the era (“Ocean’s 11” and “Robin and the 7 Hoods”), three of which have been newly re-mastered for their Blu-ray debut. Though the fact that it only contains Warner Bros.-owned titles means that it’s not a definitive collection by any stretch of the imagination, this is still a great gift for any fan of the Chairman of the Board. Plus, it comes with hours of bonus material, like vintage MGM shorts and cartoons, audio commentary by Frank Sinatra Jr. on “Robin and the 7 Hoods” and “Ocean’s 11” (alongside Angie Dickinson), featurettes for “Guys and Dolls,” and a 32-page photo book with movie stills and behind-the-scenes photos from each film.

Goodfellas: 25th Anniversary Edition

Though Martin Scorsese finally won his first Oscar for the 2006 crime thriller, “The Departed,” after decades of being snubbed, it should have happened 16 years earlier with “Goodfellas,” which is hands-down one of the greatest gangster movies ever made. The film has it all – sex, drugs, rock ‘n roll, and even a little violence – but what’s most impressive is the manner in which Scorsese pieces it all together, breaking a number of traditional filmmaking rules along the way. Everything about the movie is top-notch, from Scorsese’s daring direction, to Nicholas Pileggi’s hard-hitting script (an adaption of his book, “Wiseguy”), to the rock-influenced soundtrack, to some fantastic performances by Ray Liotta, Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci, who won an Oscar for his portrayal of psychotic gangster Tommy DeVito. The two-disc 25th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray includes all of the previous extras from the 2010 release – including a pair of audio commentaries and a behind-the-scenes featurette – as well as an all-new retrospective, a 36-page photo book with an accompanying essay, and a letter from Scorsese.

Kingsman: The Secret Service

After subverting the superhero genre with “Kick-Ass,” the creative team behind that film has returned with this equally over-the-top homage to spy movies. Developed separately from the Mark Millar-penned comic on which it’s loosely based, Vaughn’s movie improves on that version in just about every way, delivering a smarter (but no less absurd) take on Cold War-era spy movies that embraces as many genre conventions as it breaks. Colin Firth is excellent as the badass super-spy, and newcomer Taron Egerton shines in his debut role, but it’s Samuel L. Jackson who steals the show as the megalomaniacal Valentine. Many people will be quick to compare the film to “Kick-Ass,” but while the former boasts the same punk-rock attitude, dark plot twists, and kinetic, no-holds-barred action sequences, “Kingsman: The Secret Service” feels less like a satire of an entire genre than the product of a filmmaker who grew up loving spy movies. Though it doesn’t get too caught up in trying to make any logical sense of is preposterous conspiracy plot or colorful villains, that’s perfectly fine, because in the age of the overserious spy film, this is exactly the bold, silly kick up the ass that the genre needed.

Escape from New York: Collector’s Edition

John Carpenter’s 1981 cult classic may not have come close to predicting the future as it would be in 1997, but it marked the beginning of a beautiful friendship between the filmmaker and star Kurt Russell, who would go on to work together again in “The Thing” and “Big Trouble in Little China.” While “Escape from New York” isn’t the duo’s best collaboration (although it probably depends on who you ask), the movie is responsible for creating what is perhaps the most iconic character in Russell’s career. Snake Plissken is the ultimate antihero – a macho, cool-as-a-cucumber badass who’d just as quickly kill you if it meant saving himself – and it’s hard to imagine anyone else in the role. “Escape from New York” is a really fun B-movie with some solid set pieces, Carpenter’s trademark synth score, and a colorful supporting cast featuring Lee Van Cleef, Isaac Hayes, Harry Dean Stanto and Adrienne Barbeau. Granted, some people forget that it’s still only a B-movie, which means that it’s served with a large side of cheese, but Carpenter and Russell form such a great team that even when they swing and miss (like the mid-90s sequel set in L.A.), it’s worth going along for the ride.

Silicon Valley: The Complete First Season

What if Peter, Michael and Samir from “Office Space” lived in a tech incubator while trying to create the next killer app? We’ll never know, because while “Silicon Valley” definitely shares some tonal similarities with the 1999 cult classic (not at all surprising considering Mike Judge is responsible for both), the HBO comedy series exists as its own entity. The show is everything you’d expect from Judge – the Season One finale, “Optimal Tip-to-Tip Efficiency,” contains what is arguably the funniest and most elaborate dick joke in history – but it’s also his most grown-up effort to date. Though Judge’s humor shines through in the writing, “Silicon Valley” succeeds largely thanks to its ensemble cast. Thomas Middleditch is the perfect straight man to T.J. Miller’s over-the-top tech guru wannabe, while Martin Starr and Kumail Nanjiani constantly steal scenes as the group’s (un)dynamic duo. The show takes a while to finds its footing, and the untimely death of Christopher Evan Welch left a big hole that has yet to be filled, but by the end of the first batch of episodes, “Silicon Valley” demonstrates why it’s quickly become HBO’s ace up the sleeve.

The Wolf of Wall Street

It’s been a while since Martin Scorsese’s last truly great film, but the director has rebounded in style with “The Wolf of Wall Street,” highlighted by Terrence Winter’s hilarious script and Leonard DiCaprio’s brilliant turn as Jordan Belfort. You’ve never seen the actor quite like this before, and he’s in top form as the notorious stockbroker, delivering what is arguably his best performance with Scorsese yet. The rest of the cast is great as well, especially Jonah Hill in another award-worthy turn, up-and-comer Margot Robbie and Matthew McConaughey in a short but memorable cameo. Loud, flashy and totally obscene, the movie is like a private tour through Belfort’s excessive, hard-partying lifestyle, including easily one of the greatest sequences of the year. (Hint: it involves a highly potent strain of Quaaludes.) Though it’s a little too long for its own good, the characters are so magnetic and the dialogue so fast and funny that “The Wolf of Wall Street” is hard not to enjoy. It’s Scorsese’s best film in years, and one that will only get better with time.

Gravity

It’s been six years since Alfonso Cuarón’s last feature film – the criminally underrated “Children of Men” – but his outer space survival thriller was well worth the wait. “Gravity” is the kind of movie that will likely change the way films are made in the future. From the stunning, single-take opening sequence that lasts more than 12 minutes, to the numerous set pieces throughout, “Gravity” is such a technical marvel that it looks like Cuarón shot the whole damn thing in space. Though the story is ridiculously simple, not a single second of its 91-minute runtime is wasted, extracting so much suspense from the film’s terrifying setup that the brief injections of comedy (courtesy of George Clooney’s easygoing astronaut) are a welcome reprieve from the almost unrelenting intensity. Sandra Bullock delivers one of the best performances of her career as the rookie astronaut caught up in a seemingly impossible situation, but the real star of “Gravity” is Cuarón himself, and he deserves every bit of praise for creating what can only be described as pure movie magic.

Game of Thrones: The Complete Third Season

Creators David Benioff and D.B Weiss have stated numerous times that they set Season Three as the unofficial benchmark as to whether or not the show would be a success, and it’s easy to see why, because it showcases the full complexity and richness of the universe that they inherited from George R.R. Martin. The third season expands its scope even further than the previous year, with several new characters quickly making their mark, and old ones (like Nikolaj Coster-Waldau’s Jamie Lannister, one of the season’s MVPs) continuing to evolve within that moral gray area where “Game of Thrones” thrives. It also featured some of the most shocking story developments to date, perhaps none more so than Episode 9’s infamous Red Wedding, which made Ned Stark’s beheading look like child’s play in comparison and was without a doubt one of the biggest television events of last year. The audience reaction to that episode is very telling of the show’s pop cultural footprint, and when the writing and acting is this good, it’s no surprise why its popularity continues to grow.

True Detective: The Complete First Season

Few shows have had such a spellbinding effect on its audience like HBO’s “True Detective,” the gritty crime drama that feels more like an eight-hour movie than a limited TV series. That’s because everything about the show is incredibly cinematic, from the smart writing by creator Nic Pizzolatto, to the brilliant direction by Cary Fukunaga, to Adam Arkapaw’s gorgeous cinematography. This is the kind of show that requires absolute patience and trust in the storytellers, opting for a slow-burning pace that allows the characters to evolve naturally over the course of its time-jumping narrative. Unlike most crime dramas, the mystery surrounding the killer’s identity is never as important as Rust and Marty’s respective arcs, and that’s what makes it such rich and gripping television. Well, that and two knockout performances by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, who deliver some of the best work of their careers as the strikingly different partners. They elevate “True Detective” from a damn good drama to one that will be remembered as one of the greatest shows of its time. We can’t imagine a more perfect gift for any fan of “The Wire” or “Breaking Bad.”

Thor: The Dark World

We were really big fans of the first “Thor,” so our expectations were pretty high going into this sequel, and though “The Dark World” failed to live up to them, it’s still a pretty fun film. The movie is weakened by what is easily the worst villain of the Marvel Cinematic Universe thus far, and some of the supporting characters are criminally underused (like Sif and the Warriors Three), but there are some really great moments throughout. Most of what works in the sequel is carried over from its predecessor. Tom Hiddlestone continues to prove why Loki is Marvel’s greatest asset, because as soon as he enters the film, it gets a lot more interesting, thanks in part to his excellent chemistry with Chris Hemsworth. The Earth-based scenes also feature some pretty big laughs (courtesy of Kat Dennings), and the final act is an absolute blast. Granted, “The Dark World” isn’t quite on the same level as we’ve come to expect from Marvel, but it doesn’t make us want another “Thor” movie any less.

Captain Phillips

Based on the incredible true story of the 2009 hijacking of an American-flagged cargo ship, “Captain Phillips” is a gripping hostage thriller that boasts some of the year’s finest performances. Director Paul Greengrass has a knack for dramatizing real-life events (as evidenced in “Bloody Sunday” and the excellent “United 93”), and that success continues here, throwing the audience right into the middle of the action docudrama-style in order to best capture the intensity of the situation. But while Greengrass excels at creating a sense of claustrophobic tension (especially once the story moves into the lifeboat, where he really ratchets up the suspense), it’s the acting that makes “Captain Phillips” work as well as it does. Barkhad Abdi is particularly impressive as the leader of the pirates, while Tom Hanks delivers his strongest performance in over a decade in the title role. The final five minutes alone pack such an emotional wallop that we were shocked when the actor was snubbed at this year’s Academy Awards, because his work here is a stark reminder why he’s one of the best actors in the business.

Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy

The wraparound title of this trilogy sounds absurd, and the manner in which it was bestowed upon these three films – “Shaun of the Dead,” “Hot Fuzz” and “The World’s End” – is almost as bizarre (the movies really don’t have much to do with ice cream). What does connect them, however, are their creative talent: writer/director Edgar Wright, star/co-writer Simon Pegg and star Nick Frost (not to mention maybe a dozen other folks who play in the peripheries of these stories). These vibrant, energetic comedies showcase the sort of irreverent, whip-smart sense of humor that the Brits are so well known for, alongside absurd riffs on violence, played in an animated, over the top fashion. Yet at their core, they’re simple stories about good people learning to care for one another while banding together through their battles with zombies or cults or aliens. Simply put, they’re just incredible amounts of fun, and brimming with huge amounts of good will. “Shaun” and “Fuzz” have been around for some time, so for people who already own that pair, the final movie of the trilogy, last year’s “The World’s End,” is available separately.

Smartwatches are all the rage these days, but don’t let the Phosphor Touch Time digital watch fool you, because its lack of interconnectivity prevents it from competing with the more advanced models. Nevertheless, the Touch Time is still a major step up from your typical wristwatch thanks to some cool features, including a touch interface that’s incredibly easy to use, five different time displays, and custom language settings for English, French, Italian, Norwegian, Swedish and German. Some of the included apps feel a bit useless on such a small screen – particularly the calendar mode – but the time zone display is incredibly useful, astronomy geeks will love the lunar moon function, and the old-school calculator is a nice touch. One of the best things about the Touch Time is that you never have to sync or charge it because it’s powered by a replaceable battery (with up to a one-year life span), while the ability to upgrade from a silicone band to a stainless steel bracelet means that you can wear the same watch to work and the gym without anyone being the wiser.

Cobra AirWave 360

There are a lot of portable speakers to choose from these days, but many of them are impossible to use in the car due to their shape or size. The Cobra AirWave 360, on the other hand, is practically built for that purpose – a portable, 8-inch speaker that’s been smartly designed to look like a coffee tumbler and will fit into just about any vehicle or bicycle cup holder. You could even argue that it deters potential thieves, since no one is going to steal your mug, unless they’re really big jerks. For as functional as its design may be, however, the AirWave 360 also delivers 360-degree surround sound and features an integrated, noise-cancelling microphone that works with Siri and S Voice. There’s even a cool Gesture Control feature that enables you to pause music and answer incoming calls by simply waving your hand over the top of the speaker, and although that may not technically be considered hands-free, it’s a lot safer than the alternative.

NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto Circolo

Keurig may be the king of single-serve coffee, but don’t tell that to the folks at NESCAFÉ, whose Dolce Gusto collection of automatic brewers provides a great alternative to those who don’t require such a large variety of flavors. The company’s flagship machine, the Circolo, was voted best single-serve coffee maker by Consumer Reports three years in a row, and for good reason. Not only is it equipped with espresso technology and 15 bars of pressure, comparable to most coffee shops, but it has the ability to whip up 17 different hot and cold beverages – including gourmet-quality coffees, lattes, cappuccinos, iced drinks and more – in a matter of seconds. You can personalize the strength and blend of your brew with the easy-to-use auto scroll, while the Thermoblock heating feature guarantees that you’ll always have hot water ready to go, unlike its competitors. The Circolo is also energy efficient, with a stand-by mode that automatically powers off after 20 minutes of inactivity, and has such a unique design that it’ll look great in any kitchen.

T-fal OptiGrill

Anyone that owns a George Foreman grill knows that while it’s certainly a convenient appliance to have around the house, your food doesn’t always come out the way you want. And just because you can’t use an outdoor grill (due to bad weather or forgetting to refill the propane tank), it doesn’t mean that you should have to miss out on some great barbeque. Thankfully, the T-Fal OptiGrill ensures you’ll never have to worry about that again, because it’s the first electric grill with Precision Grilling Technology, which cooks food to your preference using six pre-programmed settings and by measuring the thickness of the food, automatically adapting its grilling cycles to each item so that they’re evenly cooked and don’t dry out. On top of the machine, there’s a cooking level indicator that changes from yellow (rare), to orange (medium), to red (well-done) and beeps when your food has reached the desired doneness, and there’s even a defrost setting that will cook food straight from the freezer without sacrificing quality. Granted, it’s a little more expensive than the typical electric grill, but we think it’s well worth it.

BlueAnt Pump HD Sportbuds Wireless Waterproof Headphones

We’ve reviewed plenty of wireless headphones in the past, but the Pump HD Sportbuds from BlueAnt rank pretty high on the list of our favorites. Though we’re not crazy about the bulky design, they’re surprisingly lightweight (consisting of a soft rubberized casing that prevents chafing behind the ear) and fit really well, refusing to budge during even the most intense workouts. They’re also extremely durable and waterproof, featuring a Teflon coating and Kevlar shielding that blocks water, salt, dust, sweat and any other debris from entering the headphones. Of course, none of that means anything if the sound sucks, but the Pump HD Sportbuds are more than adequate in that department, delivering deep lows and rich highs that don’t drop in quality at higher volumes. And with eight hours of battery life and the ability to stay connected via Bluetooth up to 100 feet away, you can keep the music pumping throughout your workout without fear of interruption.

Gtech AirRam Vacuum

Want to trick your gadget-loving dad into cleaning the house? Then you might want to consider the Gtech AirRam, which is one of the more tech-friendly vacuums on the market. It boasts a cool, minimalist design that is fairly lightweight at only 7.7 pounds, and is incredibly maneuverable, with such an ultra-low profile that the stick can practically touch the ground at all angles. The AirRam can be used on just about any surface (carpet, hardwood and tiled floors) and compresses dirt into convenient bales that make it easier for disposing. It’s also very energy efficient for a cordless vacuum; it runs on 22V of electricity for up to 40 minutes on a 4-hour charge and features washable filters that are guaranteed to last the lifetime of the machine. There’s even a four-stage LED battery display located on the front of the vacuum so that you know when it needs to be recharged. And if you’re wondering how many calories you’ve burned or the amount of electricity you’ve saved by using the AirRam, you can connect it to a PC via USB and find out using a Windows-based app. The only negative is that it takes a lot more effort to push around than a Dyson or comparable vacuum, so its compact size and somewhat gimmicky features really have to tickle your fancy to make it worthwhile.
