The Origin Story

9/11 Day was created shortly after the September 11th terrorist attacks by David Paine and Jay Winuk. David and Jay wanted something good to come from the loss of so many lives in the 9/11 tragedy, including Jay’s younger brother, Glenn, an attorney and volunteer firefighter who was killed while responding at the World Trade Center.

They began with a simple idea:
Let’s take back the day by turning the anniversary of 9/11 into a day of doing good.

Thanks to the support of many others in the 9/11 community, 9/11 Day has transformed September 11 into the largest day of service in America, officially recognized under federal law.

More than 30 million Americans and others participated, dedicating time each 9/11 to helping others in need and rekindling the spirit of unity that brought Americans together in the days following the 9/11 tragedy.

By inspiring millions of Americans and others to volunteer, donate to charities, and perform other good deeds and acts of kindness, 9/11 Day has become a positive and appropriate way for Americans to annually keep the promise to “Never Forget” those killed and injured on 9/11, as well as the many who courageously rose in service in response to the attacks—first responders, recovery workers, and volunteers—along with members of our military.

Boulder, CO Wildfire Fund

The Boulder Community Alliance was alerted on Saturday, January 1, 2022 that our non-profit had been mistakenly listed as the recipient of a Boulder, CO fund to support those impacted by the current wildfire situation. We wanted to alert donors that contributed to this fund that the Boulder Community Alliance is currently working on solutions with The Community Foundation of Boulder County Colorado, and the fundraising host, as well as Network for Good who will be distributing the funds. We will communicate updates as we reach a solution and do appreciate your patience while we iron out this mistake. While our organization is a small one, we are committed to seeing that these funds are distributed to the correct party.

01.03.2021 – Update

The organizer of the original fundraiser has facilitated the path to a solution, apologized profusely for the error, and coordinated all involved parties. We are well on our way to a resolution!
Fortunately, our organization has not received any funds yet. A third-party organization called Network for Good actually manages the transactions for these types of fundraisers. This organization has not yet collated and delivered the funds from the Instagram/Facebook Fundraiser. Network for Good will be able to redirect the funds directly to the intended non-profit. While this mistake has confused a lot of donors, it is easily rectified with a little bit of paperwork. Our kudos go out to the organizer for a well-intentioned effort and we are working closely with all groups to ensure donor intent is honored.

STAY SAFE BOULDER // Mask & Car Kit Project

We have been very fortunate to have a healthy community despite the spread of COVID-19. So far, we have taken great measures to protect ourselves and our community during this outbreak. This ongoing diligence of staying local, washing our hands, and taking precautionary measures against infection needs to become the norm in order to maintain a healthy community. Help us provide cloth masks and Stay Safe Car Kits for everyone in our town by sewing masks, donating products, or contributing to our project fund.

Rocket Building Start Time: anytime between 2–3:30 pm

Kids ages 1 to 100, join us on Friday, August 23, 2019, to construct a rocket! Space is limited to 50 participants, so sign up soon! Parents, please plan on accompanying your child(ren) under 13 to assist with construction and launching. (You can build/launch one too!)

Kits are priced at $2 for the small rocket with the option of upgrading to a medium or large rocket for an additional fee. Extra motors will be available at a nominal price. (Thank you to Boulder Mountain Lodge for sponsoring the model rocket kits!)

Once you walk to the main lodge parking lot, head south down the path towards the beaver ponds! (Take a pre-event stroll to check out the waterfall and beavers too!)

During this season of gratitude and giving, the Boulder Community Alliance (BCA) is grateful to our community of supporters. Your generosity allows us to continue our programs that serve the greater Boulder area. Our beautiful landscape shapes and inspires us, while our community sustains and connects us. Lucky we are to call this place home.

The Boulder Community Alliance was formed over a decade ago to actively champion the unique and vibrant community of Boulder and its spectacular, fragile landscape. The BCA has honed its focus to support a variety of projects that focus on Community, Land and Education within the culture and custom of our town and its people.

In 2019 the BCA will continue to focus on community, connect people through cultural and educational activities and sponsor events. We are prioritizing projects to support local agriculture and ‘Boulder culture.’

Annual Highway 12 Cleanup Meetup
Friday, May 25, 2018
Time: 9 am kickoff
Meet at: The Boulder Community Center

Captains: Please connect with your groups and wear fluorescent colors if you do not have enough vests. We do have more vests to distribute this year. We also will have materials to make signs for vehicles parked on the highway to notify motorists.
Come prepared to create a calendar of the three best times during a year that your group can commit to cleaning up the highway. We would like to post this calendar on our site to make it available for volunteers!

Scholarships Available for Upcoming Workshop!

The Boulder Community Alliance is excited to offer four (4) scholarship opportunities on a first-come basis for a hands-on wetland creation/restoration workshop next week (Wednesday/Thursday/Friday). Attendance for all sessions/days is not mandatory to qualify for the scholarship so check out the agenda and your schedule.

The workshop is being lead Tom Biebighauser who has restored over 2,000 wetlands in 23-States, Canada, New Zealand, and Puerto Rico for over 36-years. You’ve never met anyone so excited and knowledgeable about wetlands in your life. Have you ever thought about the differences between a wetland with fish and without fish? Tom can tell you all about it!

Soil Food Web Online Class Scholarship Available

BCA is excited to offer a scholarship(s) to Boulder residents who want to continue their education with Dr. Elaine Ingham in soil food web/composting principles and analytic techniques. To qualify applicants must have completed prior coursework with Dr. Elaine Ingham and be willing to share their knowledge and expertise gained through their continuing education with the community of Boulder at large. Boulder Town Independence Day Celebration 2017

Pursuit of Happiness.

Boulder celebrated, really celebrated, another 4th of July holiday this year. Two days of smiles, and visitors, and food, and fun. We’re getting used to no fireworks, and that’s ok. Better on New Year’s Eve around here anyway.
Our town park and pavilion got a real workout with a crowd. The Town’s official day of celebration was July 3. Boulder Community Alliance, for the second year now, was the main sponsor of the day’s events, along with Boulder Town and Garfield County Travel Council. More donations came in from Boulder Mountain Lodge, Boulder Mountain Guest Ranch, Hall’s Store, Boulder Outdoor Survival School, Magnolia’s, Hell’s Backbone Grill, Burr Trail Grill, Hills ‘n’ Hollows, Desert Dawn, and Sweetwater Kitchen.
Early afternoon with live music and field games drew a healthy crowd and set the fun tone. Our parade this year was short. (Someone suggested that next year we offer to decorate the tourist vehicles held up on Hwy 12 for our parade. We’d get an additional 10 minutes or so of dressed-up vehicles and parade waves.)
Back by the pavilion, the plastic slip-n-slide and the dunk tank were already cooling off the kids. The typical dunking of town officials was abandoned when it became clear this was kid domain: there were equal numbers lined up for both dunkee and dunker roles.
It was a bit of a wait for the three pit-roasted pigs (supervised by several Dixie Nat’l Forest staff and cooks), but waiting was mellow. Jabe Beal organized Boulder youth in a Presentation of the Colors. Cheryl Cox spoke briefly on service, acknowledging the veterans in the crowd, then further acknowledging other types of service, including religious leaders, emergency crews, town and board officials, local organizations–the very fabric of what helps hold a community, and country, together. Carl Dede and Jessica Frogley provided fabulous dinner music. Following dinner, with tables pulled aside, the W Duo and American Train, with Mike Cottle as the caller, roused kids and grownups alike for some lively contra dancing.
July 4 activities culminated in the 17th annual Ice Cream Social and Talent Show, co-sponsored by Hell’s Backbone Grill and Boulder Mountain Lodge.
I started collecting names of all the individuals who helped put together these extraordinary two days, but that list alone would have eaten up this column. Suffice to say there were probably more Boulder people involved and helping than there were merely attending. If you weren’t among the participants, that’s too bad. You missed a great party.
“Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” Those are really the words we’re celebrating on 4th of July. Before we were a country, before we had a Constitution, before we had political parties, we had 56 men, including one great writer, who put their names to this expression of our “unalienable rights” and the reason for governments to exist.
Two hundred forty-one years later, a little stained and cynical with our history and current events, we still have the honor of celebrating those words.
