The hot summer days are here along with barbecues, days at the beach (or pool), and the occasional picnic. And all of these events bring ample opportunities to snack on delicious treats.

Of course, as any dieter knows, snacking can prove to be the Achilles’ heel to any health conscious individual trying to keep their calories and macros within a certain balanced range.

What do we do?

Do we just deny all our cravings as we white-knuckle our way through every snacking opportunity that comes our way?

Or do we just cave to our dietary pleasures and enjoy all the snacks we can, resigned to the idea of “trying better” next year?

Maybe there’s a better option?

Snacks are pleasurable, and even recommended at times to keep one’s blood sugars level. However, how you snack and the foods you choose matter a great deal when it comes to the battle of the bulge.

With that reality in mind, here are five healthy snacking tips to consider this summer that will help stave off your cravings without bringing on a bunch of guilt.

1) Stay away from “free sugars” and eat more fruit.

Anyone watching their diet knows all too well the problems associated with eating simple sugars. Sucrose, glucose, and even fructose when eaten excessively can lead to all sorts of health issues including weight gain, tooth decay, and even liver problems.

These sugars when ingested through the consumption of juices, soft drinks, cookies, and candy are often high in caloric value, offering little other nutritional value.

Ok, so then why is fruit okay for you?

Fruit contains natural sugars as well, of course, but unlike sugar in candy or fruit juice that has been extracted from its natural source (i.e. free sugar), the sugar in fruit is not as concentrated and therefore not excessive. For instance, you would have to eat six whole oranges to get the same amount of sugar you would ingest from consuming just one bottle of juice!

Beyond that, eating fruit offers other benefits such as being a great source of fiber, potassium, antioxidants, and vitamins. In fact, it is recommended by most national dietary guidelines to consume two pieces of fruit per day. Just reach for fresh fruit over dried fruit.

That being said, try to stick with options that are lower on the glycemic index.

2) Load up on the veggies

Yes, this is the obvious one you were expecting us to list—but the value of vegetables when it comes to your health can not be overstated!

Besides being an excellent source of vitamins with a low caloric value, vegetables are rich in fiber and complex carbs. And when paired with protein or healthy fat, they will keep you feeling full for hours, not just minutes!

3) Go whole grain

Whole-grain snacks are an excellent snacking option offering you fiber, essential nutrients (including protein and iron), and rich flavors.

Whole grains will not only fill you up, but also help maintain steady energy levels and may even offer specific health benefits such as lowering the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer (according to the Journal of Nutrition).

That being said, realize that snacks marketed as “whole grain” may also contain high amounts of salt and fat. Read your labels before purchasing!

4) Combo it up

So we know that fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats (like avocados) are all excellent options for snacking opportunities. But when you combine these macronutrients at each snacking session, these balanced options will tend to keep you feeling more satisfied.

Also, when eating something that contains a good amount of healthy fat that’s also a bit heavier in calories (like natural peanut butter), try combining it with a larger portion of something very light such as celery sticks.

5) Snack intentionally, not mindlessly

Even if you are disciplined enough to limit your snacking options to healthy items like fruits and vegetables, be sure to snack mindfully.

Avoid snacking while surfing the Internet or parked in front of the TV. Doing so can lead to the mindless consumption of calories. Instead, when feeling the urge, stop what you’re doing and sit down to eat your snack like you would a small meal. This way, you will avoid overeating while still being satisfied.

The bottom line is this: snacking can be a very healthy part of your daily food intake. But you need to keep an eye on what you are eating, how much, and when. Keep it balanced, keep it intentional, and keep it sensible. If you do that, you’ll be just fine.

If all this sounds a little confusing or if you just have questions, remember we are always here to help in your weight loss journey. Simply contact your nearest Bee Healthy Clinic location today for a free consultation.

Today’s dieter has many options. There’s the Atkins diet, the Zone diet, the Ketogenic diet (we know keto!), the South Beach, raw food, and vegan diets. And then there are tweaked versions of all these options.

Whether the diet you choose is low carb, high carb, or somewhere-in-the-middle carb, one principle holds true with all… You need to stick with them so they prove effective.

In some cases, the strictness of the diet is “non-negotiable,” such as with the Keto diet where rigid adherence is a must so that the science behind the method has a few days to kick in and take effect.

Consequently, one of the biggest derailers of any type of dieting program is a lack of time or planning, leaving individuals with little options other than to “cheat” their way to a full day’s calorie consumption.

So what’s a committed dieter to do if they want to ensure they have enough time and food to adhere to their regiment?

Two words… Meal Prep.

Granted, meal prep can be a bit of a chore itself, but if you stick to some easy principles with your meal planning and prepping, you’ll find it’s far easier than you might think.

Here are 5 tips for easy meal prepping.

1. K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple, Stupid)

Yes, we agree variety is the spice of life—but you can achieve variety while adhering to simplicity with your meal planning. Recognize that, as you pile on the number of ingredients for any given meal, you also add to the prep time and storage considerations.

Not all ingredients keep as well as others, and having to allow for a pinch of this and a dash of that over and over again is hard to do without allocating excessive hours to your meal prepping routine.

Pick a few staple protein, fat, and carb sources. Then figure out how to mix those ingredients up through the clever use of seasoning, keeping the number of foods you need to work with minimal but the variety of flavors expansive.

2. Leave adequate time for shopping and planning.

Meal planning on the go while shopping is not very sustainable, can be cost ineffective, and is time-consuming. Consequently, failure to leave adequate space in your week to shop and meal plan will lead to poor and rushed meal prepping.

Allocate time to sit down and plan out all your meal options for the week. Write down your meals and the food items you need for each. Then figure out the number of servings needed, grab a calculator, and determine what you will need in total for all your ingredients.

Now all you have to do is set aside some time to hit your local supermarket, go shopping, and for goodness’ sake—stick to your list! (You can also take advantage of grocery pick-up services to avoid temptation.)

3. Prep All Your Ingredients in Bulk

Prepping each meal’s ingredients one at a time is, again, time-consuming and hard to manage. It’s preferable by far to set aside an hour or two a week to cook and prepare all your ingredients ahead of time.

Grill up all your proteins, chop those vegetables, and boil that pasta (whole grain of course 😉) all in one sitting so that all you need to do is gather your prepared ingredients for each day’s needs.

4. Portion your meals out

Now that you have everything prepped and ready to serve (or cook), you need to portion it all out. Depending on the recipe, you may be preparing the actual meal, or you may be simply setting aside the ingredients needed for quick assembly.

Either way, you will be ready, able, and have the proper resources for each day’s meal needs without requiring a ton of time or hassle, making your diet far easier to manage.

5. Use airtight containers

Ok, last thing… Now that you have all your ingredients portioned out, you need to store everything in a manner that’s convenient and safe. Poor storage practices can result in food that is flavorless, discolored, smelly, or has an unpleasant texture. One of the main reasons this happens is oxygen exposure (i.e., oxidation).

Look for quality containers that allow for chambered ingredients, are microwave safe, and airtight. This will help ensure your food stays fresh and is easy to heat and serve when needed.

Meal prepping does take time and commitment, but it’s easy to schedule and manage—and, if done well, will assist you in your diet journey. Take the time needed each week for effective food preparation and you will be pleased with the time it saves you each day.

As we approach the midway mark of 2021, despite COVID’s best efforts, we are seeing a reduction in cases and more and more states opening back up.

This means no more occupancy limits (or less restrictions, at least), less required space for social distancing, the return of indoor activities like dining and sporting events, and more.

But make no mistake…

We are not returning to what was “normal,” rather we are beginning a “new normal.”

If you were a regular gym-goer prior to the pandemic, you might be wondering what precautions or steps you should be taking to return to your fitness routine safely.

Never fear, we are here to help you with those concerns and have detailed 6 things to consider as you reenter the gym:

1. Take motivating measures.

Here’s the thing, before you need to worry about getting back to the gym safely, you need to actually get back to the gym. 😉 There’s a good chance that all the down time you experienced over the past 12 months has taken you out of your fitness groove to some extent.

What was once a natural part of your schedule now needs to integrated back into your life. As they say, “old habits die hard.” But the flip side to that adage is that “old abandoned habits are even harder to resurrect.”

It won’t take long for you to get your workout groove back but, for the short term, you may need to use some motivating measures to kickstart your regular gym routine. These might include setting daily alarms and reminders, going with a workout partner, creating a recurring event in your daily calendar, or maybe just getting on the scale each day to remind yourself of the ultimate goal.

Regardless, you know what inspires you to exercise so lean into those motivations rather than the pillows on your couch.

2. Lighten up on yourself

OK, maybe you’ve been doing some neighborhood walking or body weight exercises in front of the TV to try your best to keep in shape. But group training, cardio machines, and heavy weights will push your limits a bit more than your “home workouts.”

Take it slow and don’t feel bad about it.

While it won’t take as long as you may think to get back to your old fitness levels, it will still take time. Ease into your workouts and slowly build back up to where you may have left off. Listen to your body and, when it seems to be screaming “SLOW DOWN,” do so.

Make sure you are stretching adequately, staying hydrated, and giving yourself enough recovery time between gym sessions.

Don’t worry. You’ll get there! Do it slowly and safely so an untimely injury doesn’t derail your efforts.

3. Know your gym’s safety protocols beforehand.

Every state has different rules and expectations for gyms. Some facilities may insist on temperature checks when entering the gym, or they may require you to “reserve a space” in an attempt to quell occupancy concerns. They may insist on clients wearing a mask during their visits and adhering to some degree of social distancing measures.

Regardless, know what you are walking into before you arrive. Make sure you are personally comfortable with the protocols they’ve instituted.

4. Bring your own towel and water bottle.

There’s a good chance that you may already be doing this, but many states have required businesses to turn off public water fountains, including in gyms.

Bring water with you so you can stay adequately hydrated during your workout. Also, don’t forget a towel but be careful where you put it, especially if you’re touching your face with it.

5. Wipe down everything.

The majority of gyms we’ve seen provide sanitation stations throughout the gym, stocked with disinfecting wipes, hand sanitizer dispensers, and paper towels. Be sure to take advantage of these amenities by regularly cleaning and wiping down everything you touch before and after – including weights, mats, cardio machines, and resistance bands.

This is just a good practice, COVID aside, because gyms can become a breeding ground for bacteria and you don’t need to bring any of that home with you.

6. Have a plan, but don’t be married to it.

As gyms open back up and loosen restrictions, you are going to see a sharp increase in crowds but with less usable space and equipment to accommodate them. Rather than going to the gym and meandering around as you try to figure out what you want to do next, have a plan ready so you can get in and out, reducing your exposure to airborne illnesses like COVID while reducing the strain on the gym caused by more patrons.

Remember: Try to remain flexible with your routines. There may be less available equipment to choose from. In other words, have a backup plan.

Without a doubt, it is encouraging to see the world opening up and getting back to a semblance of normalcy. We all need to realize that there will continue to be changes and challenges as we adapt to this new normal. The gym is no exception. If you take these considerations on board, you should be able to handle your gym reentry without any hiccups.

And don’t forget – we’re ready at Bee Healthy Clinics to help you along on your weight loss and healthy lifestyle journey. Reach out to your nearest location any time.

Often when someone talks about losing weight and improving their overall health, the word that gets thrown around the most is “diet.”

I need to lose weight… I’m starting my diet next week.
I need to get healthier… better get on a diet.
My doctor said I need to watch my diet.

You get the point.

And while diet is certainly very important to your overall health profile, the truth is that many people treat dieting as a temporary measure to solving what in reality is a long-term issue.

This is why crash dieting and fad diets never work.

This is also why the American Council of Exercise has cited that only 5% of dieters keep the weight they lost off after dieting. In fact, the vast majority of dieters regain almost all the weight they shed within three to five years.

This up and down cycle of weight gain and weight loss is not only frustrating but can be extremely unhealthy, especially when dealing with “bad” diets that can lead to malnutrition and vitamin or nutrient deficiencies.

This is why, when you decide to begin your quest for a better body and better health, you need to go in with the understanding that the key to long-term success is not just a temporary change in diet but a permanent change in lifestyle.

There are many factors that go into a healthy lifestyle beyond simple calorie intake.

These factors include:

  • Activity levels
  • Cardiovascular fitness
  • Balanced nutrition
  • Vitamin and mineral intake
  • Adequate sleep
  • Fat, salt, and cholesterol intake
  • Hydration levels
  • And more

The reality is that, if you approach your health from a more holistic standpoint, you’ll have a much better chance of avoiding the ups and downs of weight loss and gain while achieving your long-term fitness goals.

Consider some of these advantages of adopting a lifestyle change mindset:

1. It’s less guilt driven and more goal driven.

We’ve all been there… dieter’s guilt. You give in and eat a big piece of cake, completely blowing out your calorie cap for the day and maybe even the week. The guilt sets in immediately as you mentally go through all the options of how you can play catch-up over the next 24-48 hours. Or maybe you just simply give up.

Periodic dieting often limits your food choices and calorie intake so extensively that you end up in an unnatural and generally unsustainable situation. Consequently, dieters find themselves frequently fighting their cravings and guilt (if they give in) as they attempt to stay within the strict confines of their dietary prisons.

However, when you see your diet choices as just a part of your overall healthy lifestyle puzzle, you allow yourself more flexibility and a balanced approach to your food selection. No longer is it about cutting X amount of calories in X amount of days to lose X amount of weight.

Instead, the focus shifts to making better overall choices on an ongoing basis in order to experience a long term benefit. Sure, you still don’t want to eat that big piece of cake every day, but once in a while you can indulge – as long as it fits into your overall meal planning strategy.

2. It spreads the risk without sacrificing the reward.

Crash and fad diets are generally an all-or-nothing proposition. Want to lose weight? Stick to this extreme dieting plan and you’ll smash your goals, but… slip up just once and you are going to experience setbacks and delays.

What happened to exercise? What about increasing your calorie burn to compensate for your calorie intake?

A healthy lifestyle approach factors in far more than just the amount of food you eat. It also considers your age, the types of food you eat, and the amount of energy you expend each day. In other words, creating a calorie deficit is the byproduct of many combined efforts and not just a singular extreme measure.

This means you can still get the same results (or even better) when you are not just eating less, but also eating smarter and exercising more, because you are leveraging a combination of powerful strategies that will result in more overall satisfaction with less anxiety and angst.

3. It’s easier.

Here’s the thing, temporary diets are hard. I think we get that. And as we said, they are often not sustainable because the changes they require from you are so outside the norm that no one would ever commit to them for a long period of time.

When you approach things from a lifestyle change perspective, you have the ability to decide what works best for your personality, schedule, likes and dislikes, and/or anything else that will give you the best chance of sticking to a long-term commitment.

Yes, the results of changing your lifestyle may not come as fast as a crash diet. And sure, a lifestyle change may sound kinda scary for some people and is without a doubt a long-term commitment versus an 8 or 12-week diet.

While both approaches give you an opportunity to lose weight and feel better, a long-term holistic mindset will do so without using extreme measures while still offering the benefit of lifelong results.

Now that weather is getting warmer and more enjoyable, we are presented with many more options for staying in shape. No more being restricted to mostly indoor activities!

However, shifting your workouts from a winter-focused routine to something more spring-friendly means you may have to make a few changes to your fitness lifestyle and repertoire.

Here are five considerations you should make before jumping into your new spring and summer regimen.

1. Assess your footwear choices.

Indoor workouts typically involve less overall steps than outdoor alternatives. Cross-training, weightlifting, and high intensity cardio-based workouts usually involve more lateral movements and an increased need for stability.

While sneakers for these types of activities are designed for multi-directional movement and soles tend to be flatter, they are not ideal for outdoor running and walking.

Running shoes, in contrast, are built for heel-to-toe movement and the higher heel drop in running shoes comes from added support and cushioning. Consider purchasing these types of shoes for tracks and runs.

2. Swap out the cotton for something more breathable.

In theory, shorts and a t-shirt should be good enough for most workouts. However, when exercising outdoors in direct sunlight and where temperatures can climb, it’s a good idea to invest in gear that’s designed for the heat.

In fact, the right clothing and workout accessories can help protect you from the sun, minimize your chances of overheating, reduce dehydration, and pretty much just make your hot weather workouts a lot more fun and enjoyable.

Look for clothing options that are nylon, polypropylene, spandex, or bamboo that breathe and wick moisture versus absorbing it like cotton alternatives. Also, consider colors that reflect the sun, and keep an eye out for brands that offer microbial and UV protection.

3. Don’t push too hard at first.

Weightlifting, aerobics, basketball, and running all offer different health benefits and all tax different systems of the body. Needless to say, if during the winter months you scaled back on your running and cardio sessions, it will take your body some time to get back into the swing of things – even if you’ve been working out the whole time lifting weights and hitting the stationary bike.

Don’t hit the pavement trying to get back to last year’s form in one day! Take it a little slower and allow your body to adjust. Don’t worry, it won’t take that long and, if you do it safely, you’ll avoid injuries and setbacks.

This also means that you should build in plenty of time for warm-ups and cool-downs before and after your workouts.

4. Stretch, stretch, stretch.

Nothing can derail your outdoor adventures like a pulled hamstring and the like. Muscles can lose flexibility and elasticity over time so, if you aren’t feeling quite as limber as you did last spring and summer, you’ll need to incorporate plenty of gentle stretching into your routines.

This is true whether you’ve been working out for one day or one decade. Stretching helps to prevent muscle and joint pain and damage, so always stretch it out.

5. Watch the temperatures.

During winter months and in a controlled environment, the dangers of overheating, dehydration, and electrolyte imbalances are greatly reduced. However, during warmer months, especially during the heat of the day, these are very real dangers even for seasoned athletes.

Consider planning your outdoor workouts during the cool of the morning or after the sun starts to subside. If you are unable to do so, just make sure you are well-hydrated when you go out.

The reality is that warmer weather opens up a ton of possibilities to broaden and enrich your fitness plans. Take the time to make the needed adjustments and preparations so you can keep going, have fun, and avoid injury.

As Spring starts to hint at bursting into bloom, so comes the opportunity to take one’s workouts outdoors. No more being restricted to your dirty garage, dark basement, or that gym that may mean a 20-minute wait in line due to social distancing reasons.

No, now all the world is your oyster! You can run, bike, play basketball, and the list goes on. What a great time for active people to get out and get moving… unless you are an allergy sufferer.

Unfortunately, with Spring also comes a ton of pollen and other allergens that can send any allergy sufferer running back indoors in a fruitless effort to avoid itchy eyes, sneezing, coughing, and that pesky runny nose that never seems to stop.

The question then is, how do I enjoy Spring and all it has to offer without feeling like hell in the process?

Well, we have a few suggestions for you that might help you get through this time of the year without a suitcase full of Kleenex in tow.

1. Make an appointment with an allergist before your symptoms kick in.

Let’s just get the obvious one out of the way – yes, visiting an allergist should be at the top of your list of things to do.

Why?

An allergist can help you figure what exactly you are allergic to in your environment, determine the proper treatments you need, and prescribe the medications you can take before things get too bad.

Recognize that pretreating with allergy medications before symptoms start to surface may help reduce or even prevent inflammation, alleviating your stuffy nose, itchy eyes, and other allergy symptoms.

Of course, if you want to treat more than just your symptoms, immunotherapy (i.e., allergy shots) can be a very effective option. They may just take a little time to kick in.

2. Reduce unnecessary exposure to pollen wherever you can.

Pollen is an invasive and pesky adversary. One thing you can do is to make sure your home has as little pollen in it as possible. This may mean:

  • keeping windows and doors closed,
  • changing and even upgrading the filters on your air conditioning unit, and
  • changing your clothes and showering more frequently so you don’t spread pollen spores around the house after coming in from your outdoor adventures.

3. Get on the spring cleaning!

Yes, pollen is a prime enemy for the average allergy sufferer, but allergens come in many forms – including dust and dust mites, molds, and animal dander. All of these contaminants can be found in your home and make for a very miserable experience when combined with all the stuff floating around outside.

We recommend a deep spring cleaning. This means dusting everything in your home from top to bottom, washing curtains, sweeping floors and carpets, and cleaning/vacuuming furniture.

This way, you will remove any existing dust and pollen that has already set up shop in your home and help mitigate the impact of spring’s bloom.

While you are at it, be sure to check your basement, bathrooms, and kitchens for mold, and remove it promptly. Mold is a very problematic, even hazardous allergen.

4. Schedule your outdoor activities around peak allergy hours.

We all would love to just go outside whenever we want to enjoy the fresh spring air, but that may not be the wisest choice if you are a chronic allergy sufferer. It may not be convenient, but try not to schedule your runs or other outdoor activities at times when the pollen count is highest (typically 5 a.m. to 10 a.m.).

Also, be aware that during allergy season, hot, dry days will have higher pollen counts than cold, rainy days. If you want to be really proactive, bookmark a site or download an app that will let you track pollen levels daily so you know when it may be better to stay in or go outdoors.

Realize that, for allergy sufferers, Spring can be a bittersweet experience, but there are things you can do to help ensure you get more enjoyment than misery out of this time of year. You just need to exercise a little proactivity and commons sense.

Let us know how you make out with your allergy combating adventures – and, if you need further help on your personal health journey, don’t hesitate to reach out to the Bee Healthy Clinic nearest you.
