The producers of the film presented Ben with a unique challenge for the music: take inspiration from the Denzel Washington film, Man on Fire, and add an old-west gunslinger twist.
The result? A post-modern hybrid of electronic, rock, and orchestra, ranging from high-octane action to sweeping emotional melodies. It’s all tied together with a 1960s guitar that evokes spaghetti westerns and James Bond-style adventure themes.

Written and Directed by Adam Beamer and Evan Beamer, the film is an ingenious comedy about two guys trying (and failing) to sell security systems in the safest town in America. With the crime rate out the bottom, they resort to robbing houses to drive up business.
Ethan Embry and Michael Gladis are a side-splitting comedy team. The film also boasts strong performances from Cary Elwes, Clea Duvall, Ving Rhames, Adam Arkin, Alan Arkin, and Vinnie Jones, with a script that really delivers on the promise of the premise.
Ben Zarai’s original score for the film is an energetic hybrid of funk, blues, rock, and orchestra. It all adds up to a fun 90 minutes.

A concert film I mixed called “Mindless Behavior: All Around the World” opened in 117 theaters this weekend and kicked some serious assembly.
I had the opportunity to finish out the mix in the Alfred Hitchcock Theater at Universal Studios, which was a blast (that dot is me at the console):

The release was by far the weekend’s widest opener among specialty movies, grossing $509K with a $4,351 average. ‘We’re really pleased. These kids and their music are pretty amazing. They also set a great example of positivity. They’re gonna be huge.

I was drawn to this project because it’s so much more than a horror film. It’s rare to see any film, especially an indie, with the qualities of “Some Guy Who Kills People”:
– It’s also a dark comedy that’s ACTUALLY FUNNY.
– It has great characters you actually care about.
– It’s well written, well directed, and well acted.
– The cast and acting are superb.
You can’t say that about too many films. That’s why I knew I had to get involved with this project. What a blessing it is to have a career in these industries, and to get to work with talented creative professionals. Thanksgiving gives us a moment to reflect on the good things we have, and I’m very thankful for the work I’ve been fortunate to do over the last 17 years, and for my friends and family.

Narrated by Ed Begley, Jr., the film was well-received, and the filmmakers’ panel that followed fielded many questions about its subject matter. “Over Troubled Waters” is a hard-hitting exposé of corruption and environmental destruction to one of our nation’s most precious natural jewels, the San Joaquin Delta in California, the largest and richest estuary on the west coast, and how water is being twisted into a commodity for the profit of a few at the expense of all Californians.
