So, if you are planning to visit Dharamshala, I would recommend staying in McLeod Ganj if you want to be right in the middle of the action. All the cultural drama unfolds in these stuffed little bylanes. From monks and local Tibetans to the myriad tourists, this is where you get to experience the quaint, chaotic and colourful side of town.

Top affordable hotels in McLeod Ganj

These are not hotels I picked from a list online. I stayed at the first two, and I visited a few others while walking around McLeod Ganj looking for a place to stay. So this is based on my own experience rather than just hotel descriptions.

Lord Krishna Boutique Stay – ₹3,500 per night

Located on Temple Road, near Dolma Chowk, Lord Krishna Boutique is squeezed in between a local grocery store selling everything from Korean ramen to local products and a huge fashion store.

The entry to Lord Krishna Boutique seems underwhelming when you compare it with the photos available online. But don’t judge a book by its cover.

The reception is small—in fact, not worthy of being called a reception at all. But the rooms, which lead from the ground floor to the lower levels, are pretty much what you have seen in the pictures. We stayed in Room no. 301 for one night. It featured an extra single bed for a child.

This was our room and the view. Decide for yourself.

Lord Krishna Boutique Stay Hotel in McLeod Ganj, Dharamshala

We paid approximately ₹3,500 per night, without breakfast, for our stay in May 2026. This was a steal deal for us. The room was cosy, had all the modern amenities we needed, and the view was, quite simply, out of this world.

I booked this hotel just two days before reaching McLeod Ganj and could get it only for one night. Due to its strategic location, I guess it is booked all year round.

One of its highlights is the rooftop restaurant, which had live music in the evening. There is a catch, though. Just booking a room doesn’t let you access the rooftop area. There are entry tickets, and the amount can be used towards your food bill.

We didn’t get a chance to explore this part, although it looked dreamy.

My tip: Look for a deal on the popular booking websites, but also try calling the hotel directly. I did, and managed to bargain for a better deal.

The McLeod Whispering — ₹3,000 per night

We had reserved three days for Dharamshala, but had a booking for only one night. So after checking in at Lord Krishna Boutique, we explored the area on foot.

And there are so many hotels in McLeod Ganj. Most of them are tucked away in dingy little alleys, but once you get inside, you find good rooms and, more often than not, some of the best views.

The next hotel we stayed at for two nights was The McLeod Whispering. It was located next to Lord Krishna Boutique and offered a much better view—actually, a 360-degree panoramic view.

The room was basic, with most of the amenities you would need. The washroom was just okay. And you have to carry your luggage up to the second floor.

But the view from the room—I really don’t think I can describe it in as many words. We paid approximately ₹3,000 per night for this stay in May 2026.

It rained one morning, and my wake-up view was splendid. I felt so connected to the five elements of being—fire, air, earth, water and space.

At the time we stayed there in May 2026, the hotel was still a work in progress. Construction was going on, so it didn’t have a reception. There was no restaurant either.

But all said and done, this was a far better and more spacious room for us, with one of the best views of the hills.

Other budget properties in McLeod Ganj

I stayed at these two hotels and can vouch for their affordability. A few others I visited that you can consider—and, in fact, even bargain at—are:

Many hotels in McLeod Ganj are tucked into the heart of the lanes, close to popular tourist spots. So even if you don’t book a stay in advance and simply walk in, you might get a good deal, particularly if you are willing to check a few properties. Sometimes you walk through a tiny lane, climb a few stairs, and suddenly find yourself looking at the mountains from a surprisingly comfortable room.

It is also close to some of the best cafés in McLeod Ganj, so you can step out of your hotel and be right in the middle of the town’s food, shopping and café scene.

Where should you stay in Dharamshala?

If you are travelling to Dharamshala and want to experience the pulse of this vibrant cultural hub, consider booking your stay in McLeod Ganj rather than choosing accommodation in the lower parts of Dharamshala. There’s also Dharamkot, which has Pinteresty hotels at affordable rates in peaceful surroundings. But the walk up and down from Dharamkot to the main market can be taxing.

For me, the biggest advantage was being able to step out and explore on foot. The markets, cafés, temples, monks, tourists and those wonderfully chaotic little lanes were all right there.

The villa rooms here are huge, spacious, and aesthetically done up — genuinely one of the nicer-looking MTDC villas I have stayed in. Here’s my honest take: the room upkeep wasn’t quite there. But aesthetically, the villa was good.

That said, one thing completely won me over — the jacuzzi in the bathroom. At this price, that is an absolute steal, and it instantly improved my whole stay. Here’s a full property and room tour to help you decide.

Food Review

Food took a fair amount of time to prepare, so patience helps here. Once it arrived, though, it was decent. The breakfast buffet, on the other hand, was an average spread — not much variety on offer. The usual poha, missal, bread butter, and jam bread with tea and coffee.

Swimming Pool & Dam View

The swimming pool was clean, which is always a big plus when you’re travelling with kids who are water babies. What made it even better was the view from the pool — you get a lovely, unobstructed view of the Gangapur Dam. This, for me, was one of the real highlights of the stay. It was grounding to just sit around the pool and look at the vast expanse of the dam, watching the sunset.

Kids’ Play Area & Outdoor Space

If you’re travelling with kids, Grape Park is the best choice. There’s ample open space for them to run around, and the outdoor play area and garden are both well laid out and well maintained. Between the lawns, the garden, and the indoor play area, this property keeps kids busy for hours — ours certainly didn’t want to leave.

Khajjiar

Khajjiar is often called the “mini Switzerland of India” — a wide, saucer-shaped meadow ringed by dense pine forest, with a small lake at its centre. Sitting at 6,433 ft and about 22 km from the Dalhousie bus stand, it’s one of Dalhousie’s most-visited spots, and on a Sunday in May, we felt every bit of that popularity.

It being a Sunday, the place was full of tourists and sellers. So we skipped the crowds near the entrance and explored the valley instead, sitting at one quiet spot to just soak in the vibe. The pine forest views here are genuinely scenic — the kind you keep turning back to look at.

The must-do with kids: the rabbits. It’s something of a local specialty — you can hold rabbits for photos. My daughter made us walk the entire valley to find the fluffiest, cutest baby rabbits. The seller we found was deaf and mute but so good-hearted — he let her play freely with the rabbits as she posed, completely at ease.

A heads-up on photographers: There are plenty of photographers around with professional cameras who’ll pose you in typical Bollywood style and then charge a steep sum to transfer the pictures to your phone. Don’t get carried away — I paid about ₹400 for close to 25 pictures, and that felt fair. Do the math before you agree, bargain if you need to, but once you’ve settled on a number, stick to it — don’t ask them to deliver more than what was promised.

We also visited an old temple right when we arrived — the Khajji Naag Temple, and it turns out there’s real history behind it. It’s close to 800 years old. There’s a local legend too — that the deity Khajjinaag once defeated the land’s earlier guardian, Dutt Baba, in a contest of strength, and that’s how both the deity and the place came to share the name Khajjiar. Even the lake has its own folklore — locals believe Khajjinaag still resides in it, with stories of a shepherd who lost his earrings in the water only to find them again, unexplainably, miles away near Chamba. The kind of place with a stillness that’s hard to describe, and now I understand why. There are several restaurants around; we went with a simple fruit salad. Paragliding is available too, but the flights are quite short, so we skipped it.

One practical tip: the washroom at Khajjiar is outside the park, a paid one at ₹10, and the line was huge when we went. It’s decent to say the least, so don’t stress if you need to use it — just budget some waiting time.

After two to three hours, we left with a phone full of photos and a heart full of memories. One real tip: parking was a serious issue on a Sunday in May. It took us a long time just to relocate our car before we could start the drive to our next stop — so if you’re visiting on a weekend, budget extra time for this.

Dainkund Peak

This was, without question, my favourite part of the day — and the least commercial. Dainkund is actually the loftiest point in Dalhousie, at roughly 9,500 ft and about 17 km from the bus stand — it’s also known as Flower Valley, and honestly, once you’ve walked it, you’ll see why. Our taxi guy told us it’s often compared to Rohtang Pass, and on a clear day you get both the Pir-Panjal range and the Manimahesh peaks in view — which is a lot for one small trek to give you. If I’m back in Dalhousie, I might genuinely skip the Khajjiar tour altogether and head straight here instead.

Reaching the top involves a short trek of roughly 1.5 hours, and it feels like walking straight into the Alps — not that I’ve ever actually been, but the views reminded me instantly of Heidi, the show I adored as a kid about a little girl living with her grandfather in the mountains. The trail winds through slopes covered in white wildflowers, with valley views and thick forest on every side. It felt like unravelling a new version of myself, one switchback at a time.

A large stretch of the trek is stairs, so it’s worth renting a wooden walking stick at the entry point — it cost us just ₹50 and made a real difference.

The trek ends at Mahakali Shri Pohlani Mata Mandir (also signed as Jai Maa Pohlani, near a spot called Dandkund), which also houses a shivling. What struck me here was the sheer number of bells hanging at the entrance and tridents planted just outside — both are votive offerings, left behind by devotees whose prayers were answered or as a mark of devotion, so that whole thicket of trishuls is really years of accumulated faith. The view from here is a core memory now — genuinely one of the standout moments of the whole trip — more than words can really capture, so I’ve covered it in more detail in the video.

From the Kailash Darshan point, I spent a good while just sitting in Padmasana, meditating with the snow-capped Manimahesh peaks in view. This is the highest point in Dalhousie, and if you’re on any kind of personal or spiritual journey, it will genuinely lift you.

The climb down was much easier, and we made it back well before sunset.

Beeji’s Park

On the way to Panchpulla, we stopped briefly at Beeji’s Park, built in honour of mothers. It’s a small, sweet place to pause — though you can just as easily admire it from the winding road without stopping. This stretch also passes two lovely schools, and honestly, the roads here are some of the best-maintained I’ve seen — spick, span, and pothole-free in a way that’s hard to compare to most Indian hill towns.

Panchpulla Waterfall

Our next and final stop was Panchpulla (also spelled Panjpulla) — sitting at 6,620 ft, about 5 km from the Dalhousie bus stand. A short ten-minute trek here is lined with shops at the start, and leads up to a waterfall. Compared to the Bhagsu waterfall in Dharamshala, the waterfall here felt quite thin, and by this point our feet were aching from the day’s trekking. We spent about ten minutes here before heading back toward the hotel.

Chamera Lake (If You’re Not Staying in Chamba Separately)

We covered Chamera Lake next, but as a stop on the way to our last stay in the Chamba district, not as part of our Dalhousie day — so I haven’t counted it in the sightseeing above. If you don’t have a separate Chamba stay planned, it’s worth adding here instead.

There’s plenty to do at the lake, with boating being the most popular activity — it’s also known as Bhadrakali Lake, and generates 540 MW of electricity alongside being a popular boating point. Where to Stay

If you plan to stay in the Chamba district, Hotel Panchtatva is your best bet and probably the most unique one.

Planning Your Day

That’s everything we managed to cover in one day of sightseeing — but we had good, unhurried time at each stop, and Dainkund Peak alone made the whole day worth it.

What it cost us: – Local taxi for the day (Khajjiar + Dainkund + Panchpulla): ₹2,500 — quoted at Gandhi Chowk, Prince Travels – Photos at Khajjiar: ~₹400 for ~25 pictures – Walking stick rental at Dainkund: ₹50

No entry fee for Khajjiar itself or the temple — the only spend there was on the rabbit photos with the sellers, which is more of a pay-what-feels-right situation depending on how long you spend with them, so there’s no fixed number to quote.

Want to add more spots? The local taxi operators run several tour combinations beyond the one we picked — Subhash Bowli (the “I Love You Dalhousie” selfie point), Bakrota Hills, Kala Top, Rock Garden, and even a full-day trip to Sach Pass for snow — each adding to the base cost. Worth asking your taxi operator for the full list when you book.

A few things I’d tell a friend before they go:

– Don’t skip Dainkund just because it’s less “famous” — it may end up being your favourite, like it was mine.

– Carry a bottle of water and comfortable shoes; between the Dainkund trek and Panchpulla, you’ll be on your feet a fair bit.

– I haven’t been to Dalhousie in the monsoon, so I can’t say how these spots hold up then, or whether Dainkund stays open — if you know, drop it in the comments.

The best place to stay in Dharamshala is McLeodganj, situated in Upper Dharamshala. Home to temples, monasteries, cafés, and bustling Tibetan markets, it is the ideal base for exploring the region. It sits at around 2,000 metres above sea level. Even in May, mornings and evenings were pleasantly cool, so carrying a light jacket proved useful.

Located in the Kangra Valley, Dharamshala offers a breathtaking view of the Dhauladhar range of the Himalayas. It is so scenic and warm that after leaving this place, you instantly start to miss it and feel like planning another trip here.

The highlight of our trip here was the lazy morning walks up and down the McLeodganj market to soak in the mountain vibes, and slow-morning café visits to start an unhurried day in this quaint hill station. All along, I was awed by the sheer number of monks. They were everywhere—at cafés, in the shopping streets, around the monasteries, and even at tourist spots. Many of them carried smartphones, smiled warmly, and blended naturally into everyday life. I wish I had spoken to one of them and understood what they had learnt about life. They didn’t seem isolated or detached from society; instead, they appeared deeply connected to it while following a different spiritual path.

Getting around Dharamshala & McLeodganj — scooter vs taxi

You can book a taxi for local sightseeing or rent a scooter and enjoy exploring Dharamshala by scooter at Rs. 800 per day. The latter allows stopping wherever you like without following a fixed schedule. There are a few drawbacks to keep in mind about scooters, though.

• Check the scooter thoroughly for brakes and overall upkeep — ours was quite under-maintained.
• Riding a scooter in the mountains is a different ball game. Getting down from the hills seems easy, but the slopes here are steep — my daughter and I had to get off and walk it down at first.
• It takes a day to get the hang of the curves. By the second day, riding was much easier.

If you want a more relaxed experience, booking a local taxi is the wiser choice — and that is exactly what we did at our second destination, Dalhousie.

Places to visit in Dharamshala

If you’re wondering which places to visit in Dharamshala first, here’s the exact route we followed over two days to minimise travel time while covering the major attractions.

Day 1 — Tea gardens, temples & the Tibet Market

1. Kalachakra Temple, McLeod Ganj

Right in the middle of the busy streets of McLeod Ganj is the Kalachakra temple. It was one of the first landmarks we noticed on reaching McLeod Ganj. The prayer wheels of the temple are right on the road. Many shoppers casually entered the temple to move the ‘wheels of time’.

2. Dharamshala Tea Garden

After filling petrol in our bike, the first spot we visited was the lush tea gardens of the Kangra Valley. If you are visiting Dharamshala in May, the tea gardens are best explored during the morning or late afternoon when the weather is much more pleasant. Nonetheless, we arrived at the peak of afternoon hours and still enjoyed a walk through the tea gardens. There are several tea-growing areas here — we visited the one closer to the Kunal Pathri Temple. The view of the snow-capped mountains from the tea garden was spectacular. After the walk, we stopped at the adjoining shop to enjoy cold, handmade drinks.

3. Kunal Pathri Temple

Durga Mata Kunal Pathri Temple is a 10-minute ride from the tea gardens. The route is scenic and the roads are well-maintained. The temple vicinity is peaceful and clean. There is also a Shiva pind inside the temple. From the temple, the view of the Dhauladhar mountains is incredible.

4. Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium

The next stop was the HPCA Stadium, almost 5 kms from the temple, covered in about 20 minutes. The roads on this stretch are well-maintained, as it is a popular spot for cricket fans. Unfortunately, we visited when a match was scheduled, so we could not explore the stadium since it was closed due to match preparations. Perhaps next time.

5. State War Memorial Dharamshala

Just a kilometre from the HPCA Stadium is the State War Memorial. For me, this was a special place — the greens and mountains here painted a picture that was soothing. Instead of exploring the vast area, I simply sat at one point, observing the beautiful pine forests. The State War Memorial in Dharamshala is a tribute to the brave soldiers of Himachal Pradesh who sacrificed their lives in various wars and military operations.

6. McLeodganj Tibet Market

Exploring the Tibet Market is easily among my favourite experiences in McLeodganj, as I get to enjoy local shopping and Tibetan cuisine. We ended Day 1 exploring the Tibet Market. It is such a lively area, where you can shop for Tibetan handicrafts, prayer flags, singing bowls, jewellery, woollen clothing, and souvenirs. What a place to soak in Tibetan culture and relish local delicacies like momos, thukpa, and butter tea. Dinner was at the cosy Ikigai Café, where we enjoyed the bibimbap and ramen.

Day 2 in McLeodganj — Dalai Lama Temple, Bhagsu Nag & sunset point

7. Dalai Lama Temple

Day 2 started with visiting the spot closest to our hotel room. After breakfast at One Two Café, we headed straight to the Dalai Lama Temple. The Dalai Lama Temple is one of the most important places to visit in McLeodganj, not only for its spiritual significance but also for experiencing Tibetan Buddhist culture. For the first time in my life, I saw so many monks in one place. There was an event underway, as the premises were full of monks chanting. After visiting the temple, we had our meal there — they served the simplest vegetable khichdi.

8. Bhagsu Nag Temple & Waterfall

Bhagsu Nag is one of the most popular places to visit in McLeod Ganj, en route to Dharamkot. The route is so scenic, every turn looks like wallpaper. After the topsy-turvy road, we reached the main market where we parked the scooter, and from there it is a short trek to the waterfall. The Bhagsu Nag Temple is right at the start of the hike, which also serves as a base for the Triund trek.

A few minutes’ walk and you reach the Bhagsu Nag Waterfall. It was unbelievable to see such a huge waterfall, that too in the month of May. The water was as cold as ice and so clear. This place deserves a full day, where you can simply relax and enjoy climbing around the waterfall.

We were short on time, so we spent almost two hours here before heading to our next stop. But not before shopping — the Bhagsu Market offered more affordable options than McLeodganj, especially for hemp bags and clothes. I felt the McLeodganj market to be more expensive than the market near the waterfall.

9. Naddi Viewpoint

This is a good sunset point, from where you can clearly see the snow-capped mountains. The point is commercial, so you will find many photographers insisting on clicking the best picture for you — at a price, of course. Do not let them take you for a ride with one pose after another. We played it smart this time, clicked just one picture, and got the print. No solo shots needed!

10. C.N.I. Church of St. John in the Wilderness

St. John in the Wilderness is situated in Forsyth Ganj, on the road from Dharamshala to McLeodganj. Surrounded by dense deodar forests, this church is famous for its stone architecture and serene location. Several Bollywood movies have been shot here. Unfortunately, we could not visit the church from the inside as it was closed — so plan your trip to reach before 5 pm to experience the rich history of this old church, built in 1852.

We ended Day 2 sightseeing by returning the bike and heading for one of the best dinners of our trip at The Tibet Kitchen.

Final words — our Dharamshala & McLeodganj sightseeing experience

There are many places to visit in Dharamshala and McLeodganj, and this is the itinerary we could comfortably cover over two days during our Himachal Pradesh family trip. But if given a choice to replan, I would spend more time at the Bhagsu Nag Waterfall and reach earlier to explore the church. The setting at both these places was so peaceful that it felt like some knots within were untying, and finally, I was able to see light.

While travelling, most of the time we are so busy striking out each place from our list that we forget to simply merge with the present. So, a note to self — just sit and be, especially at historical places which have so much to speak in silence.

From here, our Himachal Pradesh journey continued towards Dalhousie.

After spending a few days in Dharamshala, we arrived at Hotel Heaven Hills in Dalhousie by taxi. To book affordable travel and sightseeing in and around Dharamshala, you can get in touch with the McLeod Ganj taxi union.

The check-in process at Hotel Heaven Hills Dalhousie was straightforward — the usual ID verification was completed quickly, and we were taken to our room right away. The staff was polite and welcoming from the very beginning.

Our room: Super Deluxe Valley View Room (304)

We stayed in Room 304, a Super Deluxe Valley View Room with a balcony. The view from the room was the highlight of our stay. The room itself was spacious, comfortable, and had all the modern amenities we needed. Housekeeping was prompt, which made the stay even more comfortable.

My favourite spot in the room was the large window beside the bed, overlooking the mountains and the valley. So, the first thing I saw after waking up each morning was a layer of hills stretching into the distance. The highlight was the snow-capped peaks visible in the distance. The best time to be in the room was during sunset — the hills slowly turned shades of crimson and gold, creating a beautiful backdrop that was hard to take your eyes off.

Location — close to Mall Road, Dalhousie

Unlike Dharamshala, where many properties sit right on Mall Road, most hotels in Dalhousie are located at some distance from it, closer to Gandhi Chowk, one end of Dalhousie’s popular Mall Road. This hotel’s location made it easy for us to explore the town, visit cafés, and enjoy evening walks, soaking in the mountain vibes, while also giving us the peace of staying away from the hustle and bustle of the main market.

One thing worth mentioning — the hotel is located slightly uphill from the main road. The walk takes no more than ten minutes and is manageable for most travellers. But for senior citizens, it may be a little tiring to climb, especially after a full day of sightseeing, if there is no car available. The upside, of course, is that the elevated location contributes to the excellent mountain views.

We usually had our dinners at restaurants near Gandhi Chowk, so we walked the uphill climb more than once a day. For non-veg food, Kwality Restaurant is worth visiting, and for vegetarian food, there are plenty of options in the market.

Food at Hotel Heaven Hills Dalhousie

The breakfast buffet was included in our package, so our mornings were sorted. The buffet offered enough variety and was a good way to start the day before heading out for sightseeing. The dining area was clean, spacious, and well-maintained. Dinner was a slightly different story.

We ordered from the à la carte menu on one occasion. While the food was decent and reasonably priced, it was not particularly memorable. Compared to the breakfast experience, dinner felt average. One thing I appreciated was that we could place our order from the room, and the staff would call us once the food was ready in the restaurant. That said, service was quick, and we never had to wait long for our orders.

Service and cleanliness

Throughout our stay, the staff was courteous and helpful. Room service was quick, and requests were attended to without repeated reminders. As a family traveller, cleanliness is one of the first things I notice, and I was satisfied on that front throughout our three nights.

Places to visit during your stay in Dalhousie

Dalhousie is a great base for exploring some of Himachal Pradesh’s most scenic attractions. If you are staying two or three days, it makes sense to keep one day for local sightseeing and cover the popular spots — Khajjiar, Dainkund Peak, Beeji’s Park, and Panchpula Waterfall. All these attractions can comfortably be covered in a single day.

During our visit, a local taxi charged approximately Rs. 2,500 for the entire sightseeing circuit. The journey included mountain viewpoints, forested roads, open meadows, and pleasant photo stops along the way.

It all started when we were planning the final leg of our Himachal Pradesh trip from Mumbai. Three days in Dharamshala, three days in Dalhousie — but we had one night extra before boarding our train back. So instead of spending another night in Dalhousie, we decided to book a room at Panchtatva Hotel on Chamera Lake.

In anticipation of a relaxing experience before the end of our trip and the inevitable return to our daily grind, a stay here felt like the perfect conclusion to a memorable family holiday.

While booking, it looked like a dreamy destination straight out of a wallpaper. The hassle of reaching the resort and the extra spending on the boat ride only felt overwhelming when we reached Dalhousie and tried to figure out the logistics. Nonetheless, I was glad we booked this property — the experience of spending a night here was worth every effort and every penny.

How to reach Panchtatva Hotel from Dalhousie

The resort is easily reachable from Dalhousie by cab. When we first inquired with a local taxi operator near Mall Road, we were quoted Rs. 2,500. Since Chamera Lake is a popular tourist destination, finding transport is not difficult — but prices can vary quite a bit.

I contacted Panchtatva Hotel directly, and the staff shared the number of a local driver who charged Rs. 1,500. One simple call saved us Rs. 1,000. Always worth asking.

Since our train from Pathankot was the day after checkout, staying at Chamera Lake also made geographical sense — it sits on the route towards Pathankot, so we were not backtracking at all. The road is generally good, though the final stretch can be a little rough.

Parking at Panchtatva Hotel Chamera Lake

If you are travelling in your own vehicle, secure parking is available at the boating point. It is managed by a third party and costs Rs. 100 per stay — a practical and well-organised arrangement for guests arriving by boat.

The speedboat ride to Panchtatva Hotel — the arrival experience

Panchtatva Hotel is built right in the middle of Chamera Lake and is accessible by boat only. The hotel makes this clear at the time of booking, as the boat transfer is charged separately. And so, one of the most unique aspects of staying here is the arrival experience itself.

The round-trip ride costs Rs. 600 per adult, while children below ten travel free. Yes, adding boat charges to the room tariff pushes the total spend a little higher. But boating on Chamera Lake is a beautiful experience in itself. Surrounded by crystal-clear waters and picturesque mountains on all sides, the journey feels less like transportation and more like the beginning of something special.

Since we visited on a Tuesday, there was very little crowd. The hotel’s private boarding point is also separate from the general Chamera Lake boating area, which made the whole experience feel private and exclusive right from the start. Check-in is at 2 pm, but we reached the lake around noon, and were glad we did, as it gave us more time to soak in the surroundings without rushing.

Panchtatva Hotel has only six rooms, making it one of the most intimate and exclusive stays in Himachal Pradesh. Due to the limited inventory, the property remains in demand throughout the year. If you find availability on your desired date, book immediately.

Vayu Mandla — the room we stayed in

We stayed in the Vayu Mandla room, which offers a stunning 360-degree lake view. The moment we entered, the view completely took over. So peaceful is the expanse of water, mountains, and sky that at no point did I feel like doing anything other than simply sitting and looking. This is one place where a human can just be — not constantly in action, not ticking off a checklist, not rushing anywhere.

There was a rare sense of stillness here that is increasingly hard to find in everyday life. From the comfort of the bed, you could look out over the vast expanse of nature and find yourself completely mesmerized by its beauty. The room is equipped with air conditioning, a kettle, tea and coffee supplies, and comfortable furnishings. But what stood out was the ensuite bathroom — beautifully designed, straight out of Pinterest in aesthetics, and fully equipped with a geyser, toiletries, and a hair dryer.

Things to do at Panchtatva Hotel

Apart from enjoying the lake views, you can also revel in the infinity pool and chill at the café and restaurant. There is also an indoor games area where you can enjoy board games, a pool table, and just sit quietly by the lake and spot unique birds and listen to them sing.

We spent the afternoon in the infinity pool and later enjoyed warm tea on the deck. The evening was dedicated entirely to watching the sunset over the lake — one of those rare moments that makes you put your phone down and simply be present. It was the perfect way to spend our last evening in Himachal Pradesh.

The nighttime here is perfect for simply breathing and being, with no rush to click more pictures or record videos. From the comfort of our room, we enjoyed a magical stargazing experience at 3 a.m. Where else can you find an experience like that?

Dining at Panchtatva Restaurant

The in-house restaurant serves predominantly vegetarian cuisine, with a few egg-based dishes on the menu. Non-vegetarian food is not available. The hotel claims to prepare each dish using fresh, high-quality ingredients without refined oils — and the food reflected that. Simple, clean, and honest.

During our stay, we tried both Chinese and egg preparations and found the food to be satisfying. Not extraordinary, but wholesome and in keeping with the spirit of the place. The restaurant is open from 8 am to 10 pm. Orders can be placed on the number shared at check-in, and you can choose to eat in your room or head to the restaurant and enjoy the meal with the lake right in front of you. We did both, and both were lovely.

Final words

Panchtatva Hotel is like stepping into a dream for a few hours in your main character moment. There is no rush to complete any itinerary. The moment you enter the room; it is like you are in a wallpaper. What I appreciated most was the opportunity to connect — with nature, with silence, and with myself. It gave me a pause to acknowledge the impermanence of existence.

My morning yoga abhyas overlooking the lake remains one of my favourite memories from this entire Himachal trip. Soaking in the silence while connecting to the self, in the awareness that you are nothing but pure consciousness — Shivoham Shivoham.

The moment you step outside Hotel Anant Palace in Ghansoli, the setting makes it clear this is not your average neighbourhood restaurant. The exterior feels premium and the interiors polished — the kind of place that makes you momentarily forget you are in Ghansoli.

For a birthday dinner in Navi Mumbai, the ambience could not have been more fitting. My mother and extended family were impressed from the moment we walked in, and for me, that was already half the job done.

Food — what to order at Hotel Anant Palace Ghansoli

From the non-veg platter starter to mushroom cream soup to the main course, including chicken tikka biryani, the food was the clear highlight of our visit. Well-seasoned, generously portioned, and the kind of spread that makes the table go quiet for a few minutes — we loved every bit of it, and the kids enjoyed it too. On our request, they also reduced the spiciness level, which was a lovely touch.

The overall food quality was impressive — several notches above the average Navi Mumbai dining experience. If you visit, do not skip the non-veg platter starter. It is worth every rupee.

Birthday celebration setup at Hotel Anant Palace

This is what genuinely impressed me. Hotel Anant Palace had arranged a dedicated corner for birthday cake cutting — thoughtfully set up and separated from the general dining area. It gave the moment its own little stage. My mother loved it, the family got some lovely photos, and the evening felt genuinely celebratory rather than just another restaurant dinner.

It is a small detail — but for a birthday dinner, these are exactly the things that matter. It signals that the restaurant cares about making the occasion feel special, not just filling tables. Since we visited on a Monday, the crowd was thin — which made the celebration feel even more private and special.

The Anant Kulfi stall outside — an unexpected highlight

Right outside Hotel Anant Palace, Ghansoli, there is an ‘Anant Kulfi’ stall — organic, handmade kulfi that is heavenly. We had it after dinner, and it was the perfect way to end the evening. Cold, creamy, and just right after a hearty meal. I am sure to head back to this stall again, even just for the kulfi on a cold winter night.

Even if you are full after dinner, save just a little room for the kulfi outside Hotel Anant Palace. It is one of those small discoveries that stays with you long after the meal.

Things to know before visiting Hotel Anant Palace Ghansoli

• The price might be a little on the higher end compared to most Navi Mumbai restaurants — plan your budget accordingly. For a family of five with two kids, our bill came to around Rs 3,500 post a 10% corporate discount.

As we moved ahead, the right side of the street was dedicated to a game zone — similar to what you see in malls. We deliberately ignored it at first.

Instead, we found a lovely greeting card-making activity using stamps — something both our kids and senior family members enjoyed equally. Emotionally, yes — it did feel magical. For a few hours, with the parade, snow, Santa photos, and a decorated Christmas tree, it genuinely felt dreamy. If you’re visiting with elderly family members, limited seating can become uncomfortable during peak hours.

The entry fee only gives you access to a beautifully decorated street lined with things to purchase and games to spend on. To enjoy it properly, you must be prepared to spend beyond the ticket price. For a group of eight, the entry tickets alone cost us around ₹4,000. With games and food included, the total expense crossed ₹7,000 for a single evening. We have to head to a hotel for dinner afterwards, so you can only imagine.

So, if you ask me whether I would go again next year? Probably no. For a one-time experience, I loved it. The memories will stay with me. But next year, I might simply visit a well-decorated mall or explore another Christmas spot in Mumbai. Although thanks to Instagram, almost every popular place feels crowded these days — ticketed or not.
