The Cambridge Distillery’s Japanese Gin won a double gold medal the China Wine and Spirits Awards, perhaps the most rigorous and prestigious spirit competition in the world. However, this still wasn’t enough for Master Distiller Will Lowe, who wanted to create something exclusive and unique, using his Japanese Gin as a base. Distilling at half the pressure found on top of Mount Everest, and at a temperature lower than the coldest ever day at the South Pole, Will has been able to capture the “angel’s share” of his Japanese Gin, yielding just 15ml a day. Only six bottles of Watenshi (the name for a Japanese angel) have ever been produced, presented in a hand blown decanter bottle, finished off with silver. The liquid inside is equally stunning, with notes of sweet citrus and spice, supported by bitter juniper and an incredibly long, complex finish. Truly extraordinary. Japanese Gin

“After years of distilling gins to suit individual palates, it became obvious that for many people gin is more than just a crisp, refreshing spirit to drink with tonic water,” says master distiller Will Lowe. “The vast majority of our clients drink their gins neat, or over ice, and that requires something beyond a hit of juniper and zing of citrus.”

Watenshi is a rare gin that uses the top one per cent – the angel’s share – of the Cambridge Distillery’s award-winning Japanese gin. “It requires almost 50 distillations to make just one single bottle,” adds Lowe, who uses air pressure at less than half the level experienced at the summit of Mount Everest to retain the gin, which would otherwise disappear through evaporation. The unique process is so time-consuming that there are only 36 bottles in the world at present, six of which will be sold in the UK, exclusively from Selfridges. They went online this week and will be available in the London store from Saturday November 7.

“With Watenshi we have been able to explore the upper limits of what the gin category is capable of. We sought to make a gin of unparalleled intensity and complexity. It’s an expression of refined elegance, which has previously been the preserve of the finest single malts and significantly aged cognacs.”

The gin is contained in a unique bottle designed by Swiss designers Loris&Livia and jeweller Antoine Sandoz, who has worked with Tom Ford, Chanel and De Beers. The bottles have been hand-blown in Cambridgeshire, the stoppers made in Switzerland, and the silver feathers on each bottle engraved and plated in London.

“There has been a huge proliferation of different gins in the past few years,” says Guy Hodcroft, wine and spirits buyer at Selfridges, “and we wanted to have the absolute. The Cambridge Distillery has yet to produce anything short of extraordinary, but the Watenshi takes it to the next level – both in terms of the gin’s balance and complexity, and its presentation.”

IN 2015, LE BRISTOL PARIS CELEBRATES ITS 90TH ANNIVERSARY

The story of this iconic Hotel is a wonderful and lasting one which has been told with passion since 1925. Nine decades have been spent illustrating the “art de vivre à la française” and gracefully taking the Hotel to the very height of refinement and quality.

More than a majestic layout of the noblest materials, marbles and precious paneling, original works of art, fabrics from the finest crafts, and the most refined gastronomy under the guidance of the talented three Michelin star Chef Eric Frechon, Le Bristol is first and foremost a house where people take precedence.

The magnificent building, a masterpiece of the Oetker Collection, is rich due to more than 600 devoted and passionate employees: apprentices, chefs, commis, florists, housekeepers all are specialists in their field who put all their all, hearts and souls to continue writing the pages of this wonderful Parisian Palace.

From our elegant address on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, Le Bristol Paris embodies the true sense of luxury.  With talent, expertise and warm pleasure we put an extraordinary level of preparation into distinguishing each guest’s experience. With nearly a century of history behind them, Le Bristol Paris still leads the way with fresh ideas, assiduously crafting every detail to become the first hotel in France to earn the distinction of  “Palace hotel”.

Le Faubourg

At the end of the nineteenth century, the Elysée Palace became the official residence of the Presidents of France. During the same period, the first luxury shops started to appear. When the saddler Hermès and the dressmaker Jeanne Lanvin opened their boutiques, the rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré’s reputation was made.

The Opening

The hotel opened in April 1925, when the Roaring Twenties were in full swing: it was the heyday of Josephine Baker, Sydney Bechet and the Charleston. During that carefree and prosperous era, Paris attracted all the big names from the worlds of culture and fashion: Rochas, Balenciaga, Chanel, Schiaparelli, Picasso, Mondrian and Dali.

Fashion

In 1954, the first Pierre Cardin boutique opened at 118 rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. Christian Lacroix, Louboutin and many others followed, and famous clients flooded through the doors of Le Bristol Paris: Konrad Adenauer, Kim Novak, Rita Hayworth and Charlie Chaplin. With its proximity to the haute couture Le Bristol became a favourite home for fashion photographers.

The best bar in the world

In 2013 Bar du Bristol was elected best bar in the world. This comfortable and cultivated bar quickly established itself as a favourite Parisian hotspot for cocktails and afterworks.

BASTILLE DAY GUINGUETTE STYLE

TUESDAY, JULY 9, FROM 7.30PM

To bring in Bastille Day a few days in advance, Le Bristol Paris’s garden will be transformed into a chic Guinguette tavern along the Seine. Communal tables, merry-making and conviviality will prevail, along with a live jazz orchestra to provide the evening’s tempo for guests to swing under the lanterns till the wee hours. Rustic chic and straw boater hats recommended!

For the festivities, Le Bristol Paris will arrange everything – from cocktail caravans and food trucks to the dance floor. Novices of the French java dance and the musette waltz needn’t worry! Professional dancers will be on hand to lead our guests in a waltz under the stars. Le Bristol Paris begins the celebrations a day in advance of Bastille Day.

NEW IDEAS AND EVENTS AT LE BRISTOL

Throughout the year, gastronomy, art and fashion come together in the numerous events held at Le Bristol Paris hotel. ‘The Books, the Wine…’ is a charity event: all benefits are donated by Le Bristol Paris to the American Hospital of Paris. Every month, a famous writer is invited to share a high standard dinner created by 3-star rated Chef Eric Frechon, served with wine discovered in the company of its producer. On the first Monday of each month, the luxury brasserie 114 Faubourg holds wine appreciation evenings.

A wine grower, selected by Marco Pelletier, the Head Sommelier at Le Bristol Paris, presents their own wine in person to complement a tasting menu specially created by chef Jean-Charles Cauquil. For dedicated followers of fashion the hotel organises ‘Fashion High Teas’ on certain Saturdays. Major fashion houses as well as new designers present their collections at teatime in the hotel. Le Bristol Paris, located in a neighbourhood crammed with art galleries, also hosts a number of sculpture exhibitions in its magnificent garden every year. Le Bristol Paris is the place to meet in Paris!

Delicious: perfect paella on the grill https://amsterdamtoday.eu/delicious-perfect-paella-on-the-grill/ Thu, 07 May 2015 13:21:50 +0000 http://amsterdamtoday.eu/?p=7790

In Valencia, paella is cooked over an open fire, tended to by a cadre of men who fuel the flame with orange-tree branches and pinecones to infuse the rice with a woodsy aroma. It all sounds terribly romantic. And terribly impractical to try at home. (Who has access to a cadre of fire-stoking men and an orange tree?) But with a few tweaks that harness the power of a backyard grill, you too can make the perfect paella—smoky and savory with a nice socarrat, that prized layer of crisp, charred rice on the bottom. The word “paella” refers to the pan it’s traditionally cooked in. But don’t get too caught up in tradition. Better to cook the chicken and shrimp independently, directly on the grill. You’ll have greater control over doneness and, added back to the pan, they infuse the rice with smoky flavor. Use this link to read more about this subject. Thanks to countless heroes the Netherlands was liberated from the German occupying forces on May 5 1945. The Dutch were very happy that they got their long desired freedom back again and with a lot of energy they started with the reconstruction of the Netherlands.

May 4

On May 4 at 20: 00, the Dutch commemorate all the dead during a 2 minutes silence. Flags are hung at half mast. Not only the dead from World War II are remembered, but also the dead, who have fallen after the Second World War and who have fallen during military missions abroad. These missions are always aimed at preserving or restoring peace in countries where it is necessary. Dutch soldiers also help, at this moment, to protect people in countries where there is no peace.

During the commemoration, the Dutch are not only thinking about the dead, but also that their freedom is due to the many heroes who have liberated the Netherlands. In addition, everyone speaks out that any war should stop and no new wars may arise. War brings out the worst of men and as a result many people will be dead or injured and that there are no winners. Only losers.

May 5

The Dutch celebrate on May 5 that they are liberated from the Nazi’s. The Netherlands is free for 70 years now since 1945 and their freedom is celebrated every year with great pleasure. The flags go out, liberation parties are held, people relive the liberation by dressing in the style of 1945 and driving in restored vehicles and everyone is happy.

Happy with the regained freedom. Glad that it is so pleasant to live in the free Netherlands. Glad that they respect one another in this beautiful country on the North Sea.

Especially the Dutch are very grateful to all the veterans of countries like the USA, United Kingdom, Canada et cetera. They are every year invited to join the festivities and honered for their good work during World War II.

Listen here to a beautiful song about the war composed by the Dutch composer Rogier van Otterloo. The title is Soldier of Orange!

Wish

The Dutch people, on May 5, as every year, are speaking out their wish that everyone in the world should live in freedom. Achieving 100% freedom on the world will never be achievable, but freedom is one of the most beautiful things in the world to which we all should strive for continually.
