Thank you to everyone who helped with the recent Invasive Plant Removal events at Oaks Preserve and Thompson-Osborn Preserve. Completion of the Chimney Swift Tower

ALT Board members Ed and Bob completed the siding on the chimney swift tower erected on our Bishop lane property. The birds now have a deluxe apartment house to live in come spring. Many thanks to Ed Roy for the use of his dump truck and equipment and thanks to the Jules Poirior Company for donating the siding!

Marge’s Barn to be preserved exclusively as a wildlife refuge

Dear Avon Community,

You may have noticed that our Marge’s Barn property at 160 Huckleberry Hill Road is no longer open to the public. We have learned that the owner’s wishes were for it to be preserved exclusively as a wildlife refuge, and we hope you will help us honor those wishes.

We encourage you to visit the Land Trust’s many other properties which offer wonderful recreation opportunities and remain fully open to the public. To locate and learn more about them, please visit the Trails page on our website.

Avon Land Trust received a grant from PeoplesBank

Your Avon Land Trust is pleased to report that we recently received a grant from PeoplesBank, to help us purchase a trailhead kiosk for our new Thompson/Osborne Trail off Scoville Road. This helps us fulfill our mission of public enjoyment of nature.

Presenting the check to land trust Co-Presidents Rick Dubiel and Bob Breckinridge is bank manager Joanne Uribe. PeoplesBank has a beautiful new building located at 182 West Main St in Avon, and will be holding a Grand Opening on Saturday, May 3rd from 1-3 pm. UCONN basketball stars Solo Ball, Sarah Strong, and Tarris Reed will be there for photos and autographs! Free food and raffle prizes too! Last but not least, PeoplesBank CD rates are excellent!

The Avon Land Trust is very grateful to Eversource for the donation of a trailhead kiosk at our Marge’s Barn parcel, located at 160 Huckleberry Hill Road.

Pictured at right below is Avon resident Mark Massaro, Community Relations for Central CT for Eversource, along with land trust Co-President Bob Breckinridge. Mark has a long personal history of community service as former President of the Avon Little League.

Mark was provided with a history of the parcel, and offered helpful advice on seeking state historic recognition status for the barn, which might open up additional funding opportunities for upkeep and improvement to our 200+ year old barn barn.

Our land trust trailhead now connects to the Town of Avon network of trails, and our barn serves as a workshop for scout projects, storage of tools and materials, family programming center, and a fledgling museum and nature center.

Thank You to the Polish Falcons of America for Awarding Grant to Avon Land Trust

The Avon Land Trust would like to thank Polish Falcons of America for their recent grant of $150. Our barn and 8.5 acres of land located at 160 Huckleberry Hill Road was a bequest from the late Marge Kubik-Dubiel, who was of Polish and Czech descent. The grant will be used to purchase a display sign in our barn museum, about the immigrants from Central Europe who settled on Huckleberry Hill, and worked at local factories while also operating their small family farms.

Grant of $2,000 from the Whole Foods Market’s Community Giving Program

The Avon Land Trust is pleased to report that it has recently received a generous grant of $2,000 from the Whole Foods Market’s Community Giving Program! The funds will be used to further our mission of preserving open space, providing trails and hikes for public enjoyment, offering educational programming on environmental topics, and improving wildlife habitat.

The Avon Land Trust has recently re-activated its Acquisition Committee

The Avon Land Trust has recently re-activated its Acquisition Committee, to identify properties of interest, prioritize them, and approach the landowners about possible donation or purchase. Bill Shea will lead the committee. The land trust has acquired three properties in the past three years, and hopes to acquire more!
