Held in Flushing Meadows, Queens, the U.S. Open is one of tennis’s four Grand Slam tournaments (Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and U.S. Open). It is one of the most exciting tournaments because it’s the players’ last chance to win a major title that year. This tournament brings together the top 128 players in the world, competing in women’s singles and doubles, men’s singles and doubles, mixed doubles, junior championships, and wheelchair tennis.

Players from 54 nations are represented in this year’s U.S. Open tournaments. Some of the most favored players by students are “Ben Shelton, Carlos Alcaraz, Coco Gauff and Naomi Osaka because they all have strong serves, their interviews are fun to watch, and the matches are entertaining,” freshman Alila Groban said. “I like watching them because every match is so unpredictable and exciting,”

For students who play tennis at Convent, watching the U.S. Open gives them a chance to connect with each other about their favorite players, insights, and moments from the nail-biting matches. “What makes the U.S. Open so exciting to watch as a tennis player is that you get to learn while watching the best of the best play each other,” junior Áine Ruddy said. “It is also fun to watch because you can see yourself and your teammates in these players, and it makes playing tennis something to look forward to even more.” 

As the tournament enters its final rounds, four American tennis players remain in the singles competition: Ben Shelton, Frances Tiafoe, Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula. For Americans, their success this year has been extremely noticeable, since the last American Man to win an Open was Andy Roddick in 2003, 22 years ago. However, Coco Gauff won in 2023. 

“How is it that we continue to get pockets of dominant players such as Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner when so many players have access to similar training and resources?” history teacher and former tennis coach Pierluigi Valceschini said. “I’m also curious as to why it has been so long since American players were at the top, though this year the U.S. has been dominating the Open.”

As the tournament comes to an end, students from Convent and fans will continue to watch the U.S. Open to see who the next champions will be. 

“Each player has a different playing style, so it’s very interesting to see how they compete against different opponents,” Groban said. “I also enjoy watching the energy each player brings to the court and seeing how the crowd reacts to them.”

“Today I opted for a lightweight button down and the uniform grey skirt because I think it added more dimension to an otherwise flat outfit,” freshman Collins Gray said. “This is different from my regular day outfit choices since I had to consider the weather, and I couldn’t wear any layers.”

While still remaining practical for the weather and compliant with the dresscode, students can still express themselves through fashion on warmer days in the form of stylish accessories, like jewelry or shoes. Collins outfit today was stylish with colorful accessories that showed off her unique style. As Collins expresses, a dramatic change in the weather does not mean you have to compromise your individual sense of fashion. 

“Automatically I start with my skirt, for my top I like to wear something looser,” senior Sophie Fluhr said. “On hot days, I never wear a jacket; always a skirt and a loose polo.”

While some people sacrifice comfort for fashion, others prefer a simpler approach that focuses on the style of practicality and necessity. This is not every student’s ‘go-to’ outfit, but it illustrates that fashion depends on preference and personality. 

“I prioritize aesthetic and function in my outfits while also maintaining professionalism,” teacher of art foundations and advanced art portfolio Ms. Martin said, “I don’t have as many opportunities for layering on hot days, so I have to be more thoughtful and specific with what I choose.”

Teachers have different expectations of attire they have to meet. Every day, regardless of the weather, teachers try to look put together and still incorporate their identity into their outfits with the clothes they have in their closets. Ms. Martin is a great example of balancing personality while still remaining polished.

 From these students and teachers, we hear about their ideas and thought processes that occur when choosing an outfit for their school day. They choose articles of clothing with the criteria of remaining professional, lightweight and breathable materials, and utilizing color coordination for their outfits. In conclusion, these different points of view contain two main themes; climate determines fabric choice and layers of clothing, and fashion is a way for students and teachers to express themselves and their own personal style.

On Sept. 2, 2026, journalist, leader and feminist Gloria Steinem died, surrounded by her loved ones at her home in New York City. She was 92 years old, and the cause of death has not been shared by her family. 

“I never really knew who she was until she passed away,” sophomore Olivia Bolling said. “But I can tell she had a huge impact on the women’s rights movement,”

Gloria Marie Steinem, born March 25, 1934, in Toledo, Ohio, to parents Ruth and Leo Steinem, spent most of her childhood traveling across the country and living in a trailer for her father’s work. When her parents divorced in 1944, Gloria was left to take care of her mentally ill mother by herself. She attended Smith College in Massachusetts before spending two years in India on a fellowship where she was inspired by the nonviolent teachings of Mahatma Gandhi. 

“Her story is inspirational,” senior Stella Ramelot said. “I admire her care for others and her hard work to rise above her situation.”

Later, she moved to New York City and wrote for several magazines before gaining attention for her “I Was a Playboy Bunny” undercover report of the harsh conditions of the waitresses at the Playboy Club for Show magazine. She co-founded the New York magazine and Ms. magazine, the first national American feminist magazine, and became a prominent supporter of women’s rights, campaigning for the Equal Rights Amendment and speaking out in support of women’s reproductive rights. 

“I was inspired by her work always. She stood as an activist in support of equality for women and had an impressive history of journalism,” art teacher Rachel McIntire said. “I saw her speak a few times, and she was very powerful, as well as an honest and clear speaker. She spent her whole life fighting for women’s reproductive rights.”

She became a major symbol of the women’s equal rights movement, and her legacy has had a lasting impact on today’s world. At an all-girls school like Convent, students and faculty should be conscious and supportive of those who are fighting for women’s empowerment and rights so that we can help to make the world a fairer and more pleasant place. Gloria Steinem will be missed, but her tremendous impact on today’s world will not go unnoticed.

“I read The New York Times article about her, and I’m grateful that she did what she did because otherwise the world would be a much different place,” Bolling said. “I hope women everywhere can recognize her contribution and participate in this movement as well.”

Once the showcase was ready, students were given the opportunity to walk around and browse the different clubs and sign up. Many of the clubs also offered snacks at their tables to create a more welcoming experience. Depending on the club, some promote off-campus experiences, potlucks, on-school activities and service opportunities.

“I thought this year’s club fair was pretty fun, and I liked the organization of it this year,” senior Amy Gonzalez said. “I thought each of the clubs were more spread out, so it was a lot easier to see each club compared to last year.”

In the past years, our school has had designated club time for these groups to meet. In the 2024-25 school year, the school schedule had a club block that set aside time for students to regularly meet with their clubs. However, that schedule has now changed, and this year, club leaders are expected to assign their own club meetings outside of school hours.

“I felt like all the tables, or clubs, were competing with each other, but in a friendly way,” freshman Chloe Lee said. “I honestly thought it made the experience more fun.”

All of the clubs are student-led, each with teacher supervisors. Some clubs have designated roles within the student leaders, varying between each club. This means that the students are responsible for most of the organization, while the club supervisors are primarily there to guide and support the student leaders. As a result, these clubs provide good opportunities for students to not only gain new experiences as club members, but also to train leadership skills as club leaders.

 “I was impressed with the variety and enthusiasm that students presented on behalf of the clubs this year,” visual arts teacher Rachel McIntire said. “I look forward to seeing how they go in the school year.”

Overall, school clubs are designed to allow students to explore different passions or hobbies that they may otherwise not have the time for. Not only that, but they are a great opportunity for our school to build more relationships between the different grades.

“I think for the future, we should implement club time in the school schedule,” Gonzalez said. “Sometimes when clubs meet outside of school hours, not everyone can make it because of other extracurricular. It’s always more fun when more of the club members can meet.”

“It does not surprise me that Meta is being accused of addicting children, because that is the type of company they are,” senior Sydney Meier said. “These social media apps are constructed to target consumers by captivating audiences, and the way that they do this is by having a certain personalized appeal which draws viewers in.”

The case was initiated in 2023, when a bipartisan coalition of US state attorney-generals from over 40 states, spearheaded by California, New York, and Colorado, made the accusation against Meta. Following the filing of the lawsuit, Meta Motioned to Dismiss the claims, however the presiding judge, U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers denied Meta’s motion, allowing the lawsuit to move forward. The sharing of evidence between the two sides proceeded to take place for the following two years, with the case only reaching court for one week in Aug., before Meta settled, according to LitPRO.

“In the U.S., this is the first time that the government has taken any meaningful action to try to regulate the behavior of social media companies, and we can assume that Meta will be held fairly strictly to these safeguard policies, for courts are fairly good at enforcing terms of settlements,” Global Politics teacher Michael Buckley said. “That being said, the total value of the settlement, $17 billion, is very small in comparison to Meta’s profits, representing around a quarter of what the company takes away above costs per year, so Meta, overall, is getting off without major repercussions.”

Following the settlement, Meta will give 70% of the $18 billion settlement to the participating states, to allocate the funds to support online youth safety initiatives and other expenses, chosen at individual states discretion, over the next ten years. However, the remaining 30% will only be released under the contingent that both YouTube and TikTok implement one-hour Daily Limits and nighttime blackouts and that each pay an additional 30% ($5.3 billion) into Instagram’s youth-safety fund, according to Meta.

“On average, I spend a maximum of 1 hour per day on Instagram, so the new limits will not drastically change my life,” senior Vivienne Tang said. “However, for the people these regulations are supposed to help, I do not believe they will be that successful, because there are so many other platforms out there; unless they too put time restrictions on, kids will continue to have the same amount of screen time, just on different apps.” 

Following this landmark case, court-ordered mandates are forcing Meta to change several Instagram settings in order to decrease social media addiction. These new changes are solely for users under 18 years, and will go into effect over the next six months. Key changes include: adding two-hour daily limits that will need parent permission to turn off, silencing Instagram notifications from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. during the school day, stronger age verification measures, and allowing the option for a non-algorithmic feed, according to Facebook.

“With every single algorithm on my feed is so personalized to exactly my preferences, of course I feel like I cannot stop scrolling,” Meier said. “All of the data they save on you, through likes and watch time, is used to find the best content to get you to continue watching and come back to their app.”

This week, members of Convent & Stuart Hall’s theater program audition for roles in upcoming productions such as “Middletown,” showcasing their individual artistry and cultivating the challenging yet important skill that is auditioning.Whether it be musical theater, opera, ballet or any other performing arts discipline, auditioning is always the first step to landing a role in a production. In spite of this, standing in front of a panel of critical strangers and displaying one’s art in full form is a lot harder than it may seem. To help build students’ audition skills, Convent & Stuart Hall’s performing arts department holds auditions for its productions, mimicking those students might encounter at a professional artistic level.

“To prepare for auditions, I generally like to do background research on the play to figure out the plot, characters, etc,” junior Anika Agarwal said. “When I audition, I tend to be pretty nervous beforehand, but over time that sense of anxiety has gone away,”

The theater program’s auditions are composed of an initial audition and callbacks. During the initial audition, students will first slate, stating their name, grade, the role they would like and what they will be performing. Students will then sing a musical theater piece or act out a monologue from a play. In the coming days, callbacks will be announced, indicating which students the casting team wants to re-audition for specific roles.

For many artists, auditioning can be an anticipatory and nerve-racking experience. A great audition is often defined by how an artist can distance themselves from this nervousness, internalizing both long-term audition repertoire and new material. This is especially important in playing a spoken role, where it is the actor’s portrayal of the character that engages the audience. For this reason, auditions for Convent & Stuart Hall’s fall play, “Middletown,” are especially helpful in growing one’s audition skills.

Will Eno’s play, “Middletown,” tells the story of Mary Swanson, who has recently moved to Middletown. Expecting a child and burdened by her husband’s absence due to work, Swanson feels isolated and intensely anxious about her future. Swanson eventually comes to befriend the local handyman, John Dodge, who also struggles with loneliness and finding meaning in his life. Accompanying Swanson and Dodge are an eccentric cast of locals who each have their own perspective on life and how the world works.

“It’s kind of weird, but I think it’s supposed to be,” sophomore Josie Patel said. “It’s very much like a slice of life.”

As a reimagining of Thornton Wilder’s classic American play “Our Town,” “Middletown” challenges students to internalize unfamiliar yet complex roles and portray them in an audition setting.

“It’s about the hidden threads of connection that run through a community and the role memory plays in identity and community feeling,” English department chair Daniel Bush said. “It would be helpful for an actor to acquaint themselves with the world of this play.” 

Through plays, musicals and other artistic programs, Convent & Stuart Hall’s performing arts department puts great emphasis on auditioning as an art form in itself, knowing that no matter what students pursue in life, having the confidence to present oneself in front of others will always be an invaluable skill to have. 

“I feel like auditions have definitely helped with my sense of adaptability,” Agarwal said. “Performing a scene that you have never seen before — in the sense of callbacks — under pressure has definitely made me keep my cool in other stressful situations, whether that be at school or outside.”

Parton was an icon of country music, and her rags-to-rhinestone life fascinated many. She was born in Locust Ridge, Tennessee, on Jan. 19, 1946, and grew up with 11 siblings in a one-room cabin that lacked electricity and indoor plumbing. Parton always had a love for music and began singing on the local radio as a young child; her first live performance was at age 13. Dolly’s love for music did not relent, so the day after she graduated high school she moved to Nashville to pursue a music career full-time. Parton’s career took off soon after, and by the 1970s she left “The Porter Wagoner Show,” which she co-hosted, and as a goodbye, wrote the song famously sung by Whitney Houston, “I Will Always Love You.” As time progressed, she became a national star, known for her large blonde locks and expressive makeup; she was immediately recognizable. Parton’s death hit many people hard, including the Convent community.

“I was teaching when I got the news alert on my Apple Watch,” Mathematics Department Chair Lindsay MacGarva said. “I was really sad and shocked because she had just given a health update a few days ago, and I thought she had been recovering,”

Today Parton is remembered for both her look and her lasting musical legacy, with hits like “Jolene” and “9 to 5.” But Dolly was known for more than these facets of her identity; she was also known as an incredibly loving and kind individual who always gave back to her community. In 1986, Parton opened Dollywood, a 160-acre theme park located in the Great Smoky Mountains, to aid the regional economy. One of Parton’s most significant philanthropic avenues was the Imagination Library, an organization that provides free books to children from birth to age 5. This organization was created to honor her father, who could not read or write. Today, it has provided more than 300 million books worldwide. In addition, Parton donated millions to COVID-19 research and Hurricane Helene relief efforts. Parton always desired to help her communities and people in need.

“I was scrolling on TikTok when I found out, and I was devastated,” senior Sophie Fluhr said. “I love listening to her music and always found her really inspirational. I have been listening a lot to my favorite songs of hers, especially ‘Islands in the Stream.’”

Today, flowers and handwritten messages fill Parton’s home, while countless donations continue to be made to her Imagination Library, following her family’s request that fans honor her by donating to the organization. Parton’s legacy will live on through her organizations, music and ability to bring people of all different backgrounds together. 

“Other faculty members and I continued to remember Parton throughout the school day. During lunch, Mr. Raffa, Ms. Lovejoy and I watched the video posted on her account by her nephew, and I did get teary-eyed,” MacGarva said. “We then started to play her greatest hits for the rest of lunch.”

“I don’t know why they decided to make Pluto not a planet,” senior Delphina Traina said. “I don’t really get why they changed it.”

In 2006, Nasa reclassified Pluto as a “Dwarf Planet”. Pluto was originally the ninth planet in the solar system, according to Nasa.

“I grew up with Pluto being a planet,” biology teacher Dina Srouji said. “Pluto should stay a planet.”

Srouji’s point is often argued in the world of science and the general public: why change something? However, new scientific discoveries challenged Pluto’s original classification and forced astronomers to reconsider if Pluto fits the definition of a planet. 

“I have always known Pluto to not be a planet,” sophomore Maria Lutz said. “But I still think Pluto should be a planet.”

Pluto was classified as a dwarf planet in 2006 because it has not cleared other objects from its orbital path. Pluto is around 3.7 billion miles from the Sun and takes 248 years to complete one orbit, according to Nasa. 

“I honestly feel bad for Pluto,” Traina said. “Imagine always being a planet and then a scientist decides you’re now a dwarf planet.”

As students cross campuses or look to eat off-campus, empty buildings on Fillmore Street with green posters in the storefronts might catch their eye. Bold letters insisting that these are “reserved street space for building operations” bring attention to the open permits on these vacant establishments. The buildings, bought by the Upper Fillmore Revitalization Project in early 2024, have been sitting empty for more than two years now, but new changes are coming soon.

The UFRP, (Upper Fillmore Revitalization Project), funded by venture capitalist Neil Mehta, aims to revitalize Fillmore Street, and to do so, has purchased seven buildings, five of which housed now-shuttered restaurants and businesses, like Starbucks, Noosh, and L’Occitane. Students still remember when these places were options for off-campus lunch, according to senior Fiona Brentani.

“I remember when that Starbucks location shut down during my freshman year, and everyone was wondering what would replace it,” Brentani said. “There were rumors that a Gucci store was coming to Fillmore, which would’ve been a shock,”

Slowly, progress has been creeping in. Recently, on July 14, 2026, the beloved Northern California burger chain Super Duper opened its 20th location on 1701 Fillmore St. This property is not one held by UFRP, but the fund has raised over $150 million in an attempt at a strategic turnover and upgrade of Fillmore St., so this new establishment could be seen as a result of that cash injection.

“I’m excited to eat lunch on Fillmore and maybe Super Duper,” freshman Isa Finn said. “I hope I can eat at the new restaurants that are coming near us.” 

Though it won’t be a Gucci store, 2222 Fillmore St., the location that was previously a Starbucks open since 1990, is now being replaced with a venture by Pim Techamuanvivit, a chef-owner of two Michelin-starred Thai restaurants in San Francisco, according to Food & Wine. What was formerly Noosh, a Turkish-inspired pop-up, will now be an upscale Korean barbecue restaurant called Monami, also backed by two Michelin-star chefs, according to The Nolan Group. These new projects have stirred up conversations about preserving the historical element of Fillmore St., according to Assistant Director of College Counseling Jake Sisco.

“Gentrification is always complex. There’s real concern around displacement alongside the excitement of new options emerging in historic neighborhoods,” Sisco said. “However, I’m still eager to see how these new spaces find their footing and integrate into the neighborhood.”

In the end, it remains to be seen how these new restaurants will perform in the district, and only time will tell if they succeed. When it comes to the student side of things, unless one plans on having a Michelin-starred lunch experience, not many new options seem to be on the horizon.  

“It will be interesting to see if the vibe of Fillmore will end up changing a lot,” Brentani said. “I do hope that no other small-scale restaurants are closed, though.”

Starting strong, a great place to get Burmese-Chinese food is at Yamo located at 3406 18th Street. The entrees prices range from about $8 to $10 and they only accept cash payments. It is open from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. They are known for their house fried chow main, Burmese and teatime salads, appetizers, and the ultimate cult favorite, the house noodles. The place is very tiny with little seating, but it stands out for its open kitchen where customers can watch their  food being made.      

“I’m really excited to find affordable spots to help my son expand his palette,” freshman chair Sarah Garlinghouse said. “He’s a picky eater, so I would like to find good food places that are cheap,”  

One of my favorites is Golden Boy Pizza. The pizza slices range from about $3.50 to $4.50 and it’s open from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. There are many varieties of pizzas including popular ones like clam and garlic, a combo pizza which consists of many toppings and a pesto veggie pizza. They have 2 locations: 542 Green Street in North Beach and 1447 Tarval Street in the Outer Sunset. The restaurant has an open window  with a long, but fast-paced line and their pizza stands out for its focaccia-style bread.

“It has a cheese pull that’s so satisfying,” sophomore Ellie Choi said. “It tastes really good.”  

If you want good Vietnamese sandwiches you’ve got to try Saigon sandwiches. It is located on 560 Larkin Street in the Tenderloin/Little Saigon District and 333 Jefferson Street located inside Anchor’s Landing Mall. They are known for their cash only banh mi sandwiches which range from $5 to $6 and they are open between 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m on Mondays and Tuesdays, but close at 6 p.m. throughout the rest of the week. They are takeout-only and are known for their combination pork banh mi packed with savory meats, pickled daikon, carrots and jalapenos.

“I love this place, especially their roast pork sandwich,” freshman Isabella Guerrero said. ” I always go there when I’m hanging out with friends and want banh mi sandwiches badly.” 

Lastly, a great place to get sandwiches that has casual sit down and unique fusions is called The Hungry Spot. They sell sandwiches that are between $14 to $23 and are open from 11 a.m to 6 p.m throughout the week. They are known for their barbeque Bacon Chicken Sandwich and Chicken Avocado Pesto Sandwich. The restaurant is located in a LGBTQ+ owned American neighborhood spot with limited seating. 

These restaurants aren’t the only culinary foods in SF that are budget friendly. There are many more to choose from with great varieties of food and prices that people love. Bon appetite!            

“I would love to try one of these restaurants, especially Yamo,” Garlinghouse said. “There are so many amazing and affordable food spots in San Francisco just waiting to be tried!”
