President Cyril Ramaphosa has assured South Africans that he will soon announce the election date.

Parties that will contest this year’s national and provincial elections have urged Ramaphosa to use his State of the Nation Address next month to announce the date.

Over 360 political parties have shown interest in contesting the elections.

Earlier this year, the President said he was consulting the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) on the elections which must be held within 90 days.

The country is gearing up for what many believe will be hotly contested elections since the dawn of democracy.

“Well, the election date will be announced shortly so that South Africans should get ready for the election. This is an election year; we are bringing an end to the sixth administration and once the people of our country have decided who they would like to take their country forward in the form of a new government we enter into the seventh administration, so the election date is going to be announced soon.”

Voters headed to the polls on Friday for the kingdom’s 10th parliamentary elections since independence in 1956 to define a new political map for the North African country.

About 16 million Moroccans out of the country’s 34 million people had registered to vote. They chose from 30 parties that were competing for power.

Voters from Morocco’s 95 electoral districts will elect members to serve five-year terms in the 395-member Chamber of Representatives, the lower house of parliament.

The winning party will be tasked by King Mohammed VI to form a coalition government, as the multi-party system makes it impossible for any political party to win an absolute majority.

Turnout in Friday’s elections will be closely watched as an indication of people’s trust in the country’s politicians, with projections indicating a fair amount of voter apathy expected as in past votes.
