Chris, thanks so much for the helpful and balanced review of R.T. Kendall’s Totally Forgiving God. I have enjoyed much of Dr. Kendall’s writings and teachings, but was unsure about the whole situation that I had heard rumors about, and your review helped me understand the issue that many have with his new book. I have not read any of your books, but I see that you have written a good bit on forgiveness. I assume that’s why the Gospel Coalition published your review. Taking into consideration Dr. Kendall’s book and your review, what would you consider the act that Dr. Kendall is describing in his book on forgiveness. Since it is an English word, we can only go by those connotations and a dictionary definition that I saw was “ to cease to feel resentment against” or “ to give up resentment of or claim to requital.” It seems like that is what R.T. Is wanting his readers to do. So if not using the word forgiveness, which I do agree brings up the thoughts of forgiving a moral wrong and yet that is not dictionary definition (although it is in parenthesis in the dictionary); if not that word, then what word since you agree with Dr. Kendall that the bitter believer should release that bitterness or anger against God? Thanks.

Would like to know the history of the church as we are going through the experience of a pastoral search with the book, when the Word Leads Your Pastoral Search. Excellent resource and are interested in your advise as we follow the principles and practices set forth in the book. As you know we are in a difficult season and are seeking to outreach as best we can only we have realized that our best recourse is prayer asking God for Him to bring visitors to the church to hear the gospel and create a revival atmosphere within our community. Your encouragement and counsel would be most appreciated and a blessing to our leadership and staff. Thank you for your kind attention to our concern. Read through your book several times with some heavy underlining. Two things I would like to ask. First, recognizing the day and economy in which we are living and the need for the church to be involved how does that play out in the questioning that needs to be asked and responded to Relative to Covid and the obvious judegement of God on our nation. Secondly, and more importantly reading through the Timothy and Titus passages relative to qualifying men for eldership it distinctly says men of noble task. As we bring in a man to the interview process I would like to present the question of sincerity to the most important position in leadership that being the pastor/teacher gifting and the whole manner of shepherding. My question would be and one I would like to get your perspective on is that what can be asked of the candidate in a manner of his ‘love’ for the church. We need to have a sense of his ‘love’ for the church. If that is not evident in his manner I, for one, would extend a call to him. Look forward to your comments. Kind regards, Joe

In reply to Pj. PJ -- thanks for engaging with the questions. I believe the Bible teaches we ought always to show an attitude of forgiveness. The case I make in Unpacking Forgiveness is that full forgiveness apart from repentance is not biblical. Of course, this is an area where there is a lot of discussion and disagreement.

It seems like some of these questions are about reconciliation rather than forgiveness. Otherwise I would have answered differently. It’s never wrong to forgive someone who is still unrepentant (in an attitude of forebearance). It may sometimes be wrong to reconcile with such an unrepentant person.
