A pleasant start to the weekend will not last across the Northeast, with a storm system triggered by a strong cold front threatening to turn part of it wet and unsettled.

The National Weather Service says the main window for showers and thunderstorms will develop from Saturday, Sept. 12, into Sunday morning, Sept. 13, as another disturbance moves into the region. Locally, heavy rainfall is possible, especially overnight.

Around New York City and nearby areas, the National Weather Service expects conditions to remain pleasant through much of Saturday before showers become increasingly likely Saturday night. Thunderstorms are possible after midnight, with locally heavy rainfall possible into Sunday morning. 

The timing is similar farther south.

The National Weather Service office serving much of New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania says another disturbance will approach Saturday into Sunday, producing a round of showers and thunderstorms.

Philadelphia could see showers developing Saturday afternoon, followed by a better chance of thunderstorms Saturday night and Sunday morning. 

In Maryland and Virginia, the window for Saturday storms is strongest in the late afternoon, but storms will remain possible in the evening and overnight.

Farther north, the National Weather Service in Boston says showers and possibly a few thunderstorms could bring brief torrential rainfall late Saturday night into the first half of Sunday.

Forecasters said there is a low probability of localized flash flooding, with the greatest concern near and south of I-90. Rainfall totals will vary considerably, though a narrow band could produce substantially higher amounts where the heaviest rain repeatedly develops. 

The Weather Prediction Center is also tracking excessive-rainfall potential across portions of the eastern US through the weekend, although its highest risk areas are not centered over the Northeast. 

Friday, Sept. 11, will provide the best widespread stretch of dry weather. Saturday should also begin dry in many areas before clouds increase and conditions deteriorate later in the day.

The worst period for outdoor plans and travel looks to be Saturday night into Sunday morning. Downpours could briefly reduce visibility and cause water to collect in poor-drainage areas.

Conditions should gradually improve later Sunday, followed by drier, more seasonable weather for much of the Northeast on Monday, Sept. 14.

A storm system is expected to bring showers and thunderstorms to parts of the Northeast Saturday, Sept. 12, into Sunday, Sept. 13.

An unwanted visitor repeatedly contacted a Rockland County homeowner about potentially buying their house and showed up at the residence, prompting a police response. 

Ramapo Police said they responded to an Airmont home on Thursday evening, Sept. 10, after receiving a report of an unwanted person who had repeatedly contacted the homeowner about a possible purchase of the residence. 

Officers spoke with both the homeowner and the person involved, police said. At the homeowner's request, officers told the person that any further contact was unwanted and that he was not to return to the property. They acknowledged the instructions and agreed not to return, according to police.  

Police later learned of concerns that the homeowner had received more text messages, prompting an officer to return to the residence that evening to personally follow up. 

During that visit, the homeowner told police that one of the messages was an apology for the earlier contact.

The homeowner was offered an opportunity to pursue charges but declined, police said. The department said they would continue monitoring the area with ground patrols and drones. 

No arrests or charges were announced.

Hours before a training aircraft crashed in a wooded area in Massachusetts, killing both people aboard, one of the victims shared where he was headed that morning.

Kenneth R. Moore, 66, of Pembroke, posted on Facebook at 9:39 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, that he was flying to Northampton for the Three County Fair. Moore and Marcy Asbury,  62, of East Falmouth, were later identified as the victims on board the plane. Asbury's Facebook profile shows the two were dating. Both were killed in the crash.

About 12 hours after the post, the Piper PA-28 Cherokee carrying Moore and Asbury went down near Center Street in Ludlow around 9:15 p.m. Ludlow police and Massachusetts State Police began searching the area after receiving a report of a missing aircraft. Crews later found the plane off Center Street.

Moore and Asbury were identified as the victims on Thursday, Sept. 10, Hampden District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni announced. Officials have not revealed where the aircraft was headed.

Plymouth-based Alpha One Flight Services owned the aircraft. The company has operated for 38 years without a crash, leaders said. Company founder Christopher Hyldburg released a statement after the fatal incident.

Moore's Facebook profile says he was originally from Yarmouth and graduated from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1998. He had been working at KPMG as a program manager for data governance for the New York State Medicaid Program since January, according to his profile.

The Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to Gulluni’s office and Ludlow police remain involved in the investigation.

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are also investigating. The NTSB will lead the federal investigation and release further updates.

A traffic stop turned up fake passport cards, bank cards, new iPhones and a ledger detailing alleged drug sales in New Jersey, authorities said.

Officer Chris Kiszka stopped a rental vehicle on Essex Street for a motor vehicle violation at 12:31 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11, Capt. James DePreta said. The driver, Randher Alcantra-Bautista, 27, of the Bronx, and passenger Ruddy Rosa, 24, of New York City, were inside the vehicle, DePreta said.

A consent search of the vehicle turned up four fraudulent U.S. passport cards displaying Rosa's photo with various victims' personal identifying information, police said. Officers also found three fraudulent identification cards containing information belonging to two victims and three bank cards connected to two victims, according to DePreta.

Police seized $2,626 in cash suspected of being derived from criminal activity, multiple prescription-only medications and a ledger detailing controlled dangerous substance sales, DePreta said. Multiple new Apple iPhones believed to have been fraudulently obtained and a blank check belonging to an unsuspecting business were also recovered, police said.

Alcantra-Bautista and Rosa were charged with multiple counts of identity theft, credit card theft, possessing false government documents, receiving stolen property, possessing property derived from criminal activity and distribution of prescription legend drugs, DePreta said.

Sgt. Brian Cobb and Detective Sgt. Jared Shatkin assisted in the investigation. Both men were released on criminal summonses pending future court dates, police said.

A crash shut down all southbound lanes of Route 1 Business in Trenton during the Friday morning commute, Sept. 11, the NJDOT site shows.

The crash was reported on Route 1 Business southbound at Route 206 at 5:20 a.m., according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

Preliminary reports suggest this was a fatal incident. Daily Voice has reached out to law enforcement for further information.

All southbound lanes were closed as of the agency’s latest update at 7:56 a.m.

A fight call led Hackensack police to a handgun, knife and two arrests Thursday night, Sept. 10, authorities said.

Officers responded to the area of Essex and Newman streets at about 9:15 p.m. on a report of a fight, Hackensack Deputy Police Chief Gregory Zisa said. While officers were at the scene, a separate argument broke out down the street, sending two people running from the area, Zisa said.

Officers located the pair and found a knife and handgun in their possession, according to Zisa. The two were identified as Tommy Glover, 18, and David Rodriguez, 18, Zisa confirmed.

Both were charged with possession of a handgun and possession of a handgun for an unlawful purpose, according to Zisa and jail records. Glover was additionally charged with possession of a knife for an unlawful purpose, records show.

Both were booked into the Bergen County Jail on Friday, Sept. 11, jail records show.

Dolly Parton's unmistakable voice is being heard on a new release just weeks after the country music legend's death.

"Bound to Ride," Parton's first posthumous song, was released Wednesday, Sept. 9, with The First Ladies of Bluegrass. The traditional mountain song is the first single from an upcoming all-star tribute to bluegrass pioneers The Stanley Brothers. 

Parton recorded her vocals in 2022 during a COVID-19 surge, Rolling Stone reported. She worked alone from her home studio while The First Ladies of Bluegrass recorded the instrumental track separately. 

The group features Alison Brown on banjo, Becky Buller on fiddle, Sierra Hull on mandolin, Missy Raines on bass, and Molly Tuttle on guitar.

Despite recording apart, Parton turned the track into something resembling a live performance, adding playful ad-libs and calling out each musician before her solo.

"I call it the full Dolly," producer Garry West told Rolling Stone. "We didn’t know what we would get back, and she really did over-deliver. We were shocked. We couldn’t have gotten anything better."

"Bound to Ride" will appear on "Where the Soul Never Dies: Celebrating 80 Years of The Stanley Brothers," scheduled for release Friday, Oct. 16, through Compass Records. The project also includes Billy Strings, Willie Nelson, Sierra Ferrell, Dierks Bentley, Jamey Johnson, Steve Martin, Ed Helms, and others. 

The album honors Carter and Ralph Stanley, whose music helped shape bluegrass and old-time music beginning in the 1940s. The brothers are set to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame two days after the album's release. 

Parton died Tuesday, Aug. 25, at age 80 after a brief battle with cancer. She died in Nashville, Tennessee, surrounded by loved ones.

Her sister, Stella Parton, later told "CBS Mornings" that Dolly deliberately kept the illness private because she did not want fans worrying about her.

Parton's career spanned more than six decades across music, movies, television, business, and philanthropy. Her signature songs included "Jolene," "Coat of Many Colors," "9 to 5," and "I Will Always Love You."

A five-week-old baby suffered fractures throughout his body after his father handled him too roughly, police said in court documents.

Vincent Marino, 31, of Kingston, was charged with three felony counts of endangering the welfare of a child after doctors identified fractures involving the infant’s arms, legs, and ribs, according to an affidavit obtained by Daily Voice on Wednesday, Sept. 9.

The investigation began after the baby was taken to Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center on Friday, May 15, the affidavit states.

Medical staff was initially told Marino heard a “snap” while swaddling his son, who then stopped moving his arm, investigators wrote.

Marino later gave a different account, saying the family’s cat jumped on him and caused him to drop the infant, according to the documents. He claimed he caught the baby by one arm before the child struck the floor and heard the “snap,” police said.

Doctors found fractures to the baby’s humerus, femurs, tibia, ulna, and several ribs, the affidavit states. Photographs taken earlier that month also showed patterned bruises on the child’s arm and leg, according to medical records reviewed by investigators.

Doctors considered whether a vitamin D deficiency or another medical condition could have caused the fractures. After reviewing laboratory testing, genetic studies, medical records, and imaging, specialists found no medical basis for that explanation, the affidavit states.

“There is no question in my mind that this child was abused,” Dr. Patsy Joseph Bruno, a child abuse specialist at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, told investigators.

When police searched the family’s Wyoming Avenue apartment, they found surveillance cameras inside and outside the home, according to the affidavit. The indoor camera had been covered with a baseball cap when the family returned home, investigators said.

The baby’s paternal grandmother told detectives that Marino and the child’s mother frequently argued over who would care for the infant. She said she repeatedly warned them, “The baby is not a toy,” and reminded them that he was fragile, the documents state.

A Luzerne County Children, Youth, and Families caseworker later told investigators that Marino acknowledged, “I may have been too rough with him.”

The child was placed in protective custody, according to the affidavit.

Marino was arraigned on Tuesday, Sept. 8, and remanded to the Luzerne County Prison after failing to post $1 million bail, court records show. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 21.

An overlooked calculation could leave workers with less money each payday or an unwelcome surprise when they file their taxes.

The IRS recommends checking federal income tax withholding at least once a year. Its free online Tax Withholding Estimator helps employees determine whether their employers are taking the right amount from their pay.

Withhold too little, and a worker could face an additional tax bill and possibly penalties. Withhold too much, and take-home pay shrinks while more money goes toward a potential refund.

The agency’s withholding guidance highlights several situations that deserve attention, including working multiple jobs, working only part of the year, or receiving a large refund or tax bill after the previous filing season.

People with income that is not subject to withholding may also need an adjustment. Those who qualify for additional deductions or tax credits could need less withheld.

A marriage, divorce, new child, new job, or major income change can also affect the calculation, according to the IRS.

To get started, gather your latest pay stubs for every job. Include your spouse’s pay stubs if you expect to file jointly. Depending on your circumstances, you may also need your latest federal tax return and records of other income and deductible expenses.

The IRS Tax Withholding Estimator asks about income, adjustments, deductions, and credits. The agency estimates it takes about 25 minutes to complete.

It does not request your name, Social Security number, address, or bank account numbers. The IRS says it does not save or share your responses with the agency.

If the results suggest a change, the tool can generate a completed Form W-4 for your employer or payroll department.

The timing matters because withholding happens throughout the year. The IRS advises submitting updated information promptly when an adjustment is needed.

Workers who change withholding during the year may need another update in late December. The agency also recommends checking each January to keep the calculation aligned with the year ahead.

One of autumn’s signature sky displays is approaching, and catching it will offer more flexibility than a single night outdoors.

The Harvest Moon will rise in the east shortly after sunset on Saturday, Sept. 26, according to NASA’s September skywatching guide. Saturn will appear nearby, adding another easy-to-spot object to the evening sky.

The moon reaches its full phase at 12:49 p.m. EDT that day, according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac. For viewers in the Northeast, the evening rise will offer a chance to see it.

No need to limit plans to Saturday. The moon will appear nearly full on Friday, Sept. 25, and Sunday, Sept. 27, giving skywatchers several chances if clouds interfere.

The name comes from the season. NASA explains that the Harvest Moon is the full moon closest to the autumnal equinox, which falls on Tuesday, Sept. 22, this year.

Its timing also creates a useful stretch of early evening moonlight.

The moon ordinarily rises about 50 minutes later each day. Around the Harvest Moon, that delay can shrink to about 25 to 30 minutes across the northern US, though the interval varies by location.

That shorter gap provides several evenings with bright moonlight soon after sunset. Historically, it helped farmers continue gathering crops as daylight dwindled, according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac.

For a good view, choose a spot with an open eastern horizon, such as a field, park, or waterfront. Check local moonrise times before heading out.

The rising moon may look orange or yellow as its light passes through more of Earth’s atmosphere. It can also seem unusually large near the horizon because of the moon illusion, Space.com explains.

Neither effect means the moon has physically grown.

The moon will appear against the constellation Pisces. NASA says Saturn will be visible without optical equipment, while nearby Neptune will require binoculars or a telescope.
