Welcome to Plymouth Yarn Review with Meghan Jones, here we will take an in depth look at the newest yarns from Plymouth Yarn Company, their qualities and quirks and projects you should definitely try knitting with them.
Suri Stratus
NEW!!! Suri Stratus is a brand new 2022 release, this lace weight alpaca blend is fluffy, light and oh so warm.
Weight: Lace- although this yarn is technically lace weight yarn it knits up at a 4 ½ -6 sts per inch.
Yardage: 274 yards = 0.88oz/250 m = 25g
Materials: 68% Suri Alpaca, 32% Nylon.
Colors: 9 colors
Suri Stratus is available in 9 colors, 5 neutrals- Natural, Black, Charcoal, Light Grey and Taupe, and 4 saturated jewel tones- copper (orange) denim (blue) olive (green) and burgundy (red). Within this color palette the Natural, Black, Taupe, Copper (orange) and Burgundy (red) are the most solid and saturated colors and have very little variation within the colors. The remaining colors have beautifully subtle variation of the shades within the alpaca fluff (oh yes, that is the technical term!).
Since this yarn is a lace weight yarn with the alpaca fluff spun into a thin nylon core it is an excellent substitution for- you guessed it- mohair! If you have been drooling over those light as a feather ethereal mohair sweaters but can’t wear mohair then Suri Stratus is an excellent alternative.
How does it knit up?
When knit single strand Suri Stratus is light and airy, it almost floats away from the body and because the fibers have so much air in between them they act as a warmth trap. Held single this yarn creates a fabric that is very transparent and surprisingly warm, think about a layering tee that can be worn over a shirt and under a cardigan for an extra winter layer.
When held double with another yarn Suri Stratus takes on the drape characteristics of the thicker yarn and adds an extra element of warmth, fuzziness (another technical term) and color marling. If you want to really emphasize the beauty of color marling then make sure there is a lot of contrast between the base yarn and the Suri Stratus as in the example above. If you want a more subtle effect then try to match the colors closely, Galway is an excellent yarn to hold double with Suri Stratus and it comes in 67 colors!
What should you use it for?
Oooo baby! I’m glad you asked, let’s start with holding Sure Stratus single shall we? I think that this Poncho is the perfect pattern for Suri Stratus- pick your three favorite colors and stripe it up with this simple knit.
Looking for a FREE pattern? Try this Long Striped Scarf, it uses 1 ball each of 4 different colors for a rectangle knit longways with thick stripes = classy and in style forever!
Now let’s talk about stranding this yarn along with a thicker yarn, choose your favorite DK weight and hold it double with the Suri Stratus for these patterns- I would choose Miradores– that yarn is FAB!
The Magnolia Pullover is a top down Raglan that is mostly stockinette with a few garter stitch details, this pattern would look excellent with Suri Stratus held double for a marled fabric.
Finally this Mini Jacket is the cutest cropped tie front cardigan, just the right amount of texture and if you held the Suri Stratus double you will get that fluffy look.

Materials: 36% Baby Alpaca, 36% Fine Merino, 28% silk
Colors: 8 colors
Miradores is available in 8 muted colors, 4 neutrals including Alabaster (white), Anchors a Grey (charcoal) Sandy Key (taupe) and Sea Salt (light grey). And 4 muted colors; Saffron Sky (orange), Blue Suede Seas (blue), Plum Passage (purple) and Thyme to Sail (green). The color palette of this yarn is sophisticated and each skein has the depth of color you will find in an alpaca/wool yarn spun around the sheen and vibrancy of the silk for a marled finished product in muted colors.
Every single color of palette goes so nicely together I’m seriously tempted to knit a simple stripe shawl using all 8 of them!
How does it knit up?
Miradores knits up with a beautiful drape, the alpaca and silk give this yarn movement and fluidity while the wool stabilizes the fabric so it doesn’t stretch out. The silk spun around the alpaca wool core gives the finished fabric a marled look with little speckles of the shiny silk peeking out of the satin background.
What should you use it for?
This yarn is so versatile, it’s next to skin softness is incredible and it would make a luxurious scarf or shawl. The Fan Shell Hat and Cowl would look amazing in this yarn, the texture and lace in the stitch pattern are strong and repetitive enough to be visible through the marled texture of the yarn. And who doesn’t love a hat and cowl combo for cooler weather??
Since this yarn has such beautiful drape it is ideal for swingy cardigans, something open and loose that relies on the movement of the knitted fabric. Below you can see the Swan Wings Cardigan, originally released in Nako Calico (white version) which was an acrylic cotton blend this new version has been reknit in the Miradores (blue version). The drape of the Miradores lends itself perfectly to this cardigan pattern, changing what was a warm weather cardigan into a great fall or winter layering piece.
If you are a fan of a cocoon stlye shrug then Miradores would look amazing worked up in the Lace Detail Cardigan. This cute piece is worked sideways with a wide band of lace across the back and would look amazing in Miradores!
Finally I think that the Drape Front Cardigan is just begging to be knit up the in Sandy Key color of Miradores. The simple lace on each front panel will look amazing in the shine speckled marl of the yarn!

NEW!!! Avita is a brand new 2021 release that truly gives a celestial experience, a sparkling shiny core of lurex is spun with a fluffy alpaca halo for a divine knitting project!

Materials: 73% Baby Alpaca, 17% Lurex, 10% Nylon
Colors: 8 colors
Avita is available in 8 colors, white, light grey, pale yellow, grey blue, mid blue, sea foam, red, and black. While all the shades contain the center core of sparkling lurex the lighter colors have a more subtle sparkle with the silver just barely a flicker in the surrounding alpaca. The 4 darker colors- especially the black- really highlight the lurex sparkle and the contrast of the dark alpaca with the shiny silver makes for a very special evening wear type look.
How does it knit up?
Literally like a cloud, this yarn seems lighter than air and I was constantly amazed that it wasn’t floating out of my knitting bag! The alpaca halo on this yarn makes for a very soft look as well as feel, you are going to have subtle texture, and lace patterns are going to be understated. Since the yarn has so much loft it knits up very quickly on US Size 9/5mm needles and the lightness of the yarn makes it easy on the hands and elbows. Just to give you an idea of how much lighter this yarn is; a skein of the Baby Alpaca Worsted has 204 yards in it and weighs in at 100 grams, a skein of Avita has 214 yards in it (10 more yards) and weighs half as much at 50 grams.
Is the Lurex Itchy?
That is exactly what I wanted to know too! It is not itchy at all, the alpaca covers the center core completely .
What should you use it for?
The softness of this yarn would be amazing for a cowl, scarf, or wrap. A cardigan would knit up super fast and be delightful to knit and wear.
If you are looking for a lighter than air, soft as a cloud pullover with beautiful lace then Pattern #3449 is a must knit!! This bottom up pullover is worked back and forth and seamed with set in cap sleeves and simple raw edges. Find this stunning pattern on Ravelry here.

Baby Alpaca Worsted EC
NEW!!! Baby Alpaca Worsted EC is a brand new 2021 release that has all the lovable cuddly attributes of alpaca yarn with a super sustainable easy wash treatment.

Materials: 100% Baby Alpaca

Baby Alpaca Worsted EC has a beautiful range of sophisticated colors that include black, two greys, three browns, three greens, two blues a purple, a red and a natural ivory. 8 of the colors are a slightly heathered look with added depth of flickering shade and 6 of the colors are a saturated solid, evenly dyed with rich pigmentation.
How does it knit up?
The 4 ply construction of this round smooth yarn really gives the alpaca some bounce and spring. Typically Alpaca yarns feels more slack, with loads of drape and not much spring but the twist construction of Baby Alpaca Worsted EC gives it a knitting feel more like a wool. It has a slight halo, and very few if any guard hairs, this is great news for those who love alpaca in their hands but find the guard hairs itchy by the face or neck.
How is this Alpaca Easy Care?
Baby Alpaca Worsted EC is treated with a brand new sustainable enzyme treatment that does not change the character of the yarn. The treatment is free of chlorines resins and sulfuric acid so it also keeps our environment safe and does not pose any threat to the water system. The supplier of these enzymes is certified by Oeko-Tex, bluesign, and REACH. And you guessed it, the EC stands for Easy Care!
Does the enzyme treatment change the yarn at all?
Not at all, since the fibers are treated with the enzyme instead of being coated with synthetic material there is not obvious change in the feel of the alpaca fiber.
What should you use it for?
This yarn is a 4 ply yarn which means that 4 strands of fiber are twisted around each other in a stable smooth strand. 4 ply yarns work really well for cables and texture patterns while the natural tendency of alpaca is to have a softer look, so expect your cables to be medium height and your texture to be even but gentle.

]]>A 2-ply yarn with the bounce of merino and the halo of alpaca, hearthstone is a lively yarn to knit with. The generous 436 yd/398m skeins knit up at a sport weight gauge and are available in 12 shades, 9 subtle heathers and 3 marled with 2 colors wrapped around each other. The 2-ply construction makes this yarn excellent for lace stitches, and when worked into stockinette will imbue the surface of the work with loads of texture and visual interest.

Hearthstone has 9 beautiful heathered shades, and 3 graphic marled shades.
How does it knit up?
Hearthstone is a springy knit, the merino wool is soft and smooth while the addition of the alpaca gives the yarn a slight halo, especially when blocked. This is a refined blend of wool, it looks earthy and wholesome due to the marled shades and heathered solids but it feels smooth and soft.
What should you use it for?
Since Hearthstone is a 2-ply yarn it will give stockinette a lively bouncy look, the stitches will be full of texture and movement so be prepared for a great deal of motion in the surface texture. When worked up in a lace pattern the 2 strands of Hearthstone push away from each other creating an open lacey fabric. When worked up in a cabled pattern this yarn will have medium definition, cables will show up but will not be as crisp or defined as a 3 ply yarn.
Hearthstone will create colorwork that is dreamy and blurred, you could try using it for a colorwork pattern that has close shades for a gradient effect.
Deep River Wrap
Deep, calm and wide, the slow-moving river slips gently past. Its’ clear flowing water and unplumbed depths continue without interruption, an unhurried pace that is outside of time and change. Sink into the easy rhythm of garter stitch and chevron lace in a meditative bias lace wrap worked lengthwise in one piece.
Deep River Wrap is a great way to show off your 2 favorite heathered shades and single marled shade of Hearthstone. Worked on the bias for excellent drape this simple wrap has an addictive combination of garter stitch and chevron lace that is calming to work. A modern take on a lace wrap the 2 row stripes with the zig zag chevron pattern is a great choice for someone who likes minimal, contemporary patterning.
The chevron pattern is written and charted, and the colors are carried up the side of the striped sections with a curling stockinette edge to hide the wraps.

Clatter Bridge Cardigan and Hat
Worked from the top down this fun cardigan has a combination of 1×1 ribbing and garter stitch for simple and cozy texture. Pick your kiddos favorite color combination and make them this slim-line cardi that is designed to fit under a jacket. Want a larger look? With 10 sizes to choose from you simply need to knit a larger size for a roomier fit. Try making matching sweaters for a family photo shoot, or use a rainbow of colors for a wild stripe look.

Swing n’ Zip Pullover and Hat
This wardrobe staple is worked from the bottom up in the round with three distinct sections of texture, all simply worked with a combination of knit and purl stitches. Drop sleeves make for a roomy and cozy fit that would work best as an outer layer. Short rows are included to shape the shoulders on either side of the rounded neck and all edges are finished with a garter stitch border. Want to emphasize the texture? Try working the three different patterns in different colors of yarn, or three shades of the same color for a gradient look. This garment was a favorite of the models and they both requested a pullover to keep – looks like Mama is knitting more Swing n’ Zip pullovers this fall!

Twirly Slide Vest and Hat
Vests are such a great layer for little kids, keeping the core warm and leaving the arms free for swinging, sliding and climbing. This vest is worked from the bottom up all in one piece with a garter and cables pattern that looks like a twirly slide silhouette. The bottom body has a slight a-line shape with decreases hidden in the garter stitch at the sides and straight sleeve openings. A v-neck front and wide bands of 1×1 ribbing give this vest a classic look that can be dressed up or down as needed.

Galway
Weight: Worsted Weight

Materials: 100% Wool
Colors: 78 colors
Galway is a 100% wool yarn that is hand wash only, but what it lacks in easy care it gains in warmth! The process that makes wool into a superwash strips the fibers of its microscopic scales which prevents it from felting, but also reduces its warming abilities. A 100% wool yarn like Galway is sturdy and warm, naturally fire retardant and will keep the wearer warm even when wet. This yarn would be great for an outdoor layer to keep your kiddos cozy in the elements.

A luminescent jewel of a single ply yarn, Yakima is soft and supple with glowing color and incredible drape. This luxurious blend of yak and merino is light as a cloud and silky soft and it has a lovely bit of warmth from the addition of the yak fiber.

How does it knit up?
Yakima is a lovely knit, the round single ply yarn is smooth and the addition of the yak gives the yarn an extra luxurious hand. When knit up this yarn may give you extra movement and possibly some biasing in plain stockinette stitch, it has a lovely drape and feels extra super soft.
What should you use it for?
The single ply construction of Yakima is ideal for lace projects, once blocked they will open up and lie flat and open displaying the lace stitches beautifully. This yarn will produce flat cables with little edge definition, and colorwork will have a beautiful flow between colors.
Otherwhiles Shawl
Worked from the top down this semi-circular shawl has a generous portion of garter stitch edged with a pretty lace and cable border. The shawl has six increase points to create a shawl that will wrap the shoulders with a ¾ circular shape.
The subtly shifting shades of the Yakima yarn is on full display in this pattern in the main body of garter stitch. The gentle color changes give even the simplest of stitch patterns that extra special touch, making for a luxurious knit where the yarn really takes center stage. The lace and cable border has patterning on both the right and wrong sides of the work, this really moves the decreases back and forth creating a stitch pattern that has great flow and movement.
The two borders are divided by thick lines of alternating colors giving the shawl a unique modern touch. Make sure to use a loose bind off on this shawl like the knitted bind off, then the points of the lace can be pulled out for a sculptural and beautiful edge.

]]>Lofty with just the right combination of soft and bounce Quaker Hill is like a big bowl of oatmeal with ice cream on top. The Highland wool gives the yarn stability and spring, it is light and airy and shows texture beautifully. This is my case for the oatmeal element, it’s just great wool that’s going to fill you up and sustain you, making your project cozy and long wearing. The Alpaca is totally the ice cream, it lends a soft hand and extra warmth to this blend. A slight halo is also present giving the finished item a very subtle fuzzy look, and the combination of the two makes for a yarn that will stick to itself after blocking, it won’t slide around or stretch out a lot.

Quaker Hill has 14 beautiful colors that include 6 crisp neutrals like Natural, Black, Charcoal, Grey and yes even Oatmeal, and 8 saturated colors from Red, Gold, Blues, Greens and a Deep Purple.
How does it knit up?
Quaker Hill is a lofty knit, the yarn has a lovely hand that makes for a squishy finished product. Don’t be fooled by the lighter DK weight gauge of this yarn, the finished product is plenty cozy with the addition of the alpaca fiber. Alpaca is a hollow core fiber so it can hold warm air inside itself and create a warmer experience for the wearer.
What should you use it for?
This is a 3 ply yarn so it is well rounded and crisp, it works great for cables and texture. 3 ply yarns tend to roll in on themselves preventing lace from opening up fully and bringing the texture of the decreases to the forefront of the finished product instead of the holes of the lace. You can see this in the Scarlet Runner Vest lower body pattern where the decreases used in the patterning making the ‘leaf’ shape stand out as branching stockinette stitches.
Quaker Hill would be excellent for colorwork, this DK weight yarn has a nice ‘sticky’ quality that will keep your colorwork stitches even and will work pretty well for steeking. The 3 ply construction of the yarn will create crisp and neat edges between colors for a visual masterpiece.
Pattern M127 Scarlet Runner Vest
Try out Quaker Hill in the Scarlet Runner Vest, a beautiful layering piece worked with lace and texture. This long vest has a wide bottom border of lacey ‘leaves’ that are surrounded by boxes of garter stitch, the instructions for this stitch pattern are charted and written out for you. The upper body is worked in a combination of vertical eyelets and horizontal garter ridges that emphasize the textural qualities of the Quaker Hill Yarn.
This vest is worked flat then blocked and seamed, the seaming is important since it gives the vest stability for its longer shape. The armholes are unshaped on this vest and are worked with a narrow garter stitch band. You could easily add sleeves onto this vest and make it into a cardigan if desired!
This vest was inspired by the brilliant red flowers of the Scarlet Runner Beans I grow and their twining vines that creep up the trellis. I wanted to have an organic shape like the bottom leaf pattern and the vertical columns interspersed with the horizontal patterning to create the look of the natural bean vines on the man-made trellis.
