Learn about the principles and history that shaped classical Chinese and Japanese garden design, from imperial palace gardens and temple gardens to the private gardens of wealthy merchants and government officials. This presentation will explore the commonalities and differences between Chinese and Japanese garden design, as well as the symbolism and meaning associated with plants, landscapes, and imagery.

Speaker Bio
Born and raised in London England.
Spent several years backpacking around South East Asia, Europe and South America and lived in Australia, Ecuador and India.
Moved to Victoria 14 years ago to pursue a horticultural education and career, where I was lucky enough to be introduced to Paul Spriggs and the alpine plant world. I’ve been building crevice gardens large and small for 13 years.
When not gardening for work or pleasure, I enjoy traveling, and exploring all the amazing places Vancouver Island has to offer.

Calgary Rock and Alpine Garden Society (CRAGS) will be at greengate gardensense Studio (14111 Macleod Tr. S., Calgary) for a trough display and planting demonstration, Sunday May 17 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Planting demonstrations at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Discover the art of hypertufa trough gardening! Lightweight, stone-like planters made from a blend of cement, peat moss, and perlite. These unique containers are great for alpine and rock garden plants, offering excellent drainage and a natural, weathered look over time.
CRAGS members will be on-site with alpine planter displays, expert advice, and planting demonstrations at 11:00 AM & 2:00 PM, where you’ll learn how to design and plant your own hypertufa trough.
Whether you’re an experienced alpine gardener or just getting started, this is a wonderful opportunity to connect, share ideas, and learn from fellow plant enthusiasts.

In this workshop you will modify a Styrofoam box for use as a planter. Troughs and planters are a great way to get into rock gardening and alpine plants if you do not have space for an in-ground rockery.
Cost is $50 for members and $80 for non-members. Payment by e-Transfer is required upon registration to secure your spot in the workshop.
Bring gloves and a dust mask to the workshop. Fee includes:

Guidance, use of tools and materials to modify the box for use as a planter for alpine plants

Invitation to a workshop on planting your planter
The planting workshop will be held on May 16th at 6-9pm at Lakeview Community Hall. The workshop will be led by our May guest speaker: Chris Dixon from Victoria. He is a genius when it comes to unique planting styles. This workshop will be recorded.

In recent years due to climate change, it has become increasingly challenging to grow high-altitude alpine plants in our garden near Oslo. Additionally, accessing seeds for alpine plants has recently become much harder due to stricter regulations worldwide.
I’ve started this project to grow alpine plants in a more sustainable and effective way, which includes relocating nearly 1,500 alpine species to a new rock garden high up in the Norwegian mountains. My goal is to contribute to sustainability by keeping more rare alpine plants alive and, most importantly, producing seeds in a controlled environment. In this talk, I’ll share some of my experiences so far, with the hope of inspiring others to embrace sustainability in rock gardening.
Speaker Bio
I’m Geir Moen, living in the countryside northeast of Oslo, Norway. My passion for plants began in childhood, guided by my grandmother’s early lessons in gardening. Over the years, I’ve cultivated a wide range of plants, with a primary focus on alpine species for the past 30 years. Although I initially wanted to grow every plant I encountered, I now find great enjoyment in studying plants in their natural habitats.
I founded Plants Above Treeline, an initiative dedicated to conservation and propagation of alpine plants, and knowledge-sharing. We aim to contribute to a sustainable future for rock gardening by producing seeds of wild plants in a controlled environment, while also exploring their unique traits, propagation techniques, and responsible methods for conserving these vulnerable species. I’ve also led plant exploration trips to regions such as the Carpathians, Maritime Alps, and the Tien Shan mountains in Kyrgyzstan. My travels have taken me to Patagonia as well, deepening my commitment to understanding and preserving diverse plant ecosystems.

This talk covers the ins and outs of building a unique environmentally responsible greenhouse using phase change and soil temperature differentials below the greenhouse floor to heat and cool. This design is powered by a single fan and can keep the greenhouse frost free under most conditions in Oregon’s Willamette Valley at a fraction of the cost of what it would take using fossil fuels. The build was done to grow alpine and rock garden plants at illahe Rare Plants where efficient, low carbon footprint, and eco friendly practices are implemented as much as possible. This talk covers, history, design, building challenges, testing and tips and tricks for construction and outfitting with loads of practical advice on lessons learned as well as new and emerging technologies like Phase Change Material tiles to save energy in the greenhouse.
Speaker Bio:
Mark Akimoff is the owner of Illahe Rare Plants, a specialty nursery grower of flower bulbs, geophytes, alpines and rock garden plants from around the world. Over his 25-year career as a professional horticulturist, Mark has worked in many sectors of the industry, from plant propagation at Botanical Gardens to Historical Garden management, large scale wetlands, riparian and environmental restoration projects for government, and teaching Horticulture at the Community College level. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Horticultural science from Oregon State University and studied biotechnology at Montana State University. While his personal interest in plants runs wide, a particular fondness for rock gardens and alpine plants often has him exploring the high country for wildflowers. At the nursery in Salem, Oregon Mark trials many different dryland and xeric plants to better help gardeners adapt gardens to changing climate conditions we are seeing especially in the drought stricken Western North America. The flower bulb catalog that is published every summer, offers an amazing array of diverse geophytes from around the world and one of the largest collections of Fritillaria in North America. Mark is the current vice president of the Pacific Bulb Society and a long time member of the Columbia-Willamette Chapter of NARGS. With a passion for Travel and Photography, Mark loves to share pictures of his botanical adventures with garden clubs and groups.
