Brandywine Snowmobiling Area Description

Located just a few minutes south of Whistler is one of the most popular places to ride in the Sea to Sky Corridor. The zone has plenty of terrain to offer for the novice to the expert rider from wide-open glaciers to unlimited sub-alpine trees. I have been riding here for five seasons and still find new zones and features every ride. The region gets hit so hard by storm cycles that a jump or drop that you have hit even a few days prior will be totally buried and a broken down machine will be lost overnight!

The area is pretty much one big loop. On the way up the cat track you have an option to go right up to the Meadows or left up to Chocolate bowl. If you take a right up to the Meadows you’ll find a massive bowl full of every type of riding from boondocking in the sparse trees to big cliffs drops and pow descents from the alpine back to the meadows. On a typical waist deep day, a tank of gas can be burnt in a matter of hours just in the meadows.
From the meadows you can make your way up to Brandywine Mountain via the S-Chute or the Gauntlet. Both are long climbs that may take a few tries to summit on a deep day, but can be crawled up with ease when the snow pack has settled. Once up top in the high alpine there’s an incredible 360 degree view of the surrounding mountains. One of the best views just south of Brandywine is of the massive Black Tusk Mountain (2,319m/7,608ft) in the Garibaldi Park. Once you pass Brandywine Peak (1,945m/6,380ft) and cross the mountain passes you’ll drop down to Grizzly Lake. From the lake, the route climbs past the towering peak of Mt.Cayley (2,124m/6,969ft) and onwards to the summit of Powder Mountain (2,227m/7,305ft). From here the options are endless on this sea of untouched snow and scattered peaks. It’s something that everyone needs to see at least once!
At this point, you can choose to explore the glacier or continue on the loop. After you backtrack to Grizzly lake, you’ll climb up and over the ridge to Chocolate Bowl and Mt.Fee (1,964m/6,442ft). This zone is similar to the vast terrain of the Meadows and is a favourite place to visit by many Sea to Sky locals.

The Callaghan/Brandywine valleys are located in the Coast
Mountain region of British Columbia, 13 km west of the ski resort
village of Whistler and approximately 88 km north of Vancouver.

Snowmobile Safety Tips

With the first real snowfall of the season upon us, Backcountry Rentals want to remind seasoned and new snowmobilers of some safety hints when out on the trails!

Become a defensive driver and constantly be alert of possible risk. You shouldn't assume what another snowmobile motorist can do; take additional precautions to ensure your security and that of the other motorists.

When approaching another snowmobile driver, slow down to pass securely. Dressed snowmobile trails are thought to be two way visitors, therefore knowing (and using) the correct hand signals is very important. Learn snowmobile hand signs here.

With respect to the weather conditions and time, your visibility could be substantially reduced. Don't forget to watch out for:

  • Thin ice and open water
  • Grooming gear
  • Oncoming hikers, skiers, and snowmobiles
  • Unexpected corners, junctions, and stops
  • Bridges, route and railway crossings
  • Snow banks and floating snow
  • Trees and branches around the trail
  • Wild life and domestic animals

Don't drink and ride.

If you are snowmobiling throughout the day long, you most likely will likely be halting someplace for lunch or dinner. Refrain from drinking alcoholic beverage, because it will greatly affect your response time, understanding, and result to unanticipated situations. Alcohol also reduces your body temperature, which raises your susceptibility to hypothermia and cold.

Never control snowmobiles in single file when crossing frozen bodies of plain water. Ice states are never 100% guaranteed and may change in an interval of hrs. Backcountry Rentals suggests "If you don't know, don't go" for just about any scenario, not only riding across ice.

Don't follow too carefully to the snowmobile ahead of you. This is a frequent cause of crashes, while the man ahead of you applies the brake and you're struggling to respond quickly enough to cease. An excellent rule to follow is to let three seconds involving you and the snowmobile before you.

Operate at a speed which is acceptable for the present conditions. As the trail states and visibility change, so should your velocity. This will lower your risk of getting hurt or causing an unnecessary accident.

Dress appropriately. Even though you don't think it is "that chilly outside," you should always dress warmly and in layers. Winter boots along with a windproof jacket can help keep you warm, especially on longer trips. Should you lease snowmobiles from Back country Rentals, we have snowmobile helmets accessible at no additional cost.

Atmosphere to the side of prudence by bringing a first-aid kit with you. Even if it is just the essentials, like a torch, knife, compass, and water proof matches, it is going to offer some aid should an issue arise.

Never ride alone! Not only is snowmobiling more entertaining with family and friends, it is a good deal safer when other people are around in the event of an emergency. If you opt to ride alone, make certain some one understand the trails you will be riding when you will be back.

We wish you appreciate the snow as much as we are, and BE SAFE!

Lavington to Kelowna Buck Hills ATV Ride Description

Note: Tracks start from the corner of Bluenose Rd & Whitevale Road. Tracking will take you all the way to an unload spot, then onto the complete ride out and back.

A buddy and I did a 140Km quad ride on this cold cold day at the bottom of the mountain (-10C at 9am). Should've brought a thermometer as on the logging roads at higher elevations it was colder! Sweat dripping from under my helmet iced up on the front of my jacket when clocking 60K or so on the frigid roads.

Bring extra gas if you think your quad can't do 150K on it's own. I had hand warmers and my tank was a little small so I had to top off with a 5L can. Both my buddy and I are going to invest in a thumb warmer on the throttle!

Half way through the day we met a few folks from Kelowna (other side of the mountain) so we though, hey, why not make the trek all the way to Hwy 33, you know, so we can just say we did. We did and the day was getting older so we had to literally book it all the way back with minimal stops. Was still a bit cold but not too bad.

Highlights:
*a couple of wicked straight, smooth gravel stretches along lakes to wind out on
*the wide logging main roads at the end of "Three Forks Road" allowed my best top speeds (90k+). My buddy must've been even faster, the maniac
*breaking ice on small streams made for fun muddin'
*rocky creak beds fatigued me and dented a couple rims, caution...
*amazing snowmobile chalet to warm up or sleep in if you get stuck out there

Great ride, will be doing it again!
