Life is filled with challenges. Whether health situations, caregiving, grief, or unexpected circumstances, difficult life seasons occur. Navigating hard seasons while maintaining forward motion requires determination and skill.

Following are a few tips:

Recognize Stress

I rarely recognize stress in myself because I don’t feel it internally. My clue is elevated blood pressure.

Even if you aren’t totally aware of it, stress is present when times are hard. Frustration over insignificant things, or an explosion of temper, when you least expect it, signal stress.

Holidays and anniversaries are stress-producing for those grieving any type of loss. Whether fresh grief, or heartache that has blanketed your life for many seasons, grief brings stress.

Try to find sources of joy amid your sadness. Joy and sadness are not either/or emotions. Both emotions are fluid, intermingling as they ebb and flow.

Accept Help

Many people are hesitant to accept help because they think it makes them appear weak or incapable. For some it is a control issue, feeling only you can do whatever it is correctly. But others are willing to help, especially those who have navigated difficult seasons ahead of you.

Be willing to seek counsel rather than shouldering the burden on your own. Sometimes just talking to a trusted friend or counselor helps you see beyond your current circumstances, or map out a plan of action when all paths seem blocked. Remember, people who offer to help do so from concern, not because they pity you or view you as incapable.

Practice Self-Care

When I was caring for my mother, I reasoned I had no time for regular checkups. After taking her to numerous doctors’ appointments and accompanying her to multiple trips to the hospital, another doctor visit was the last thing I wanted. I later learned that symptoms I wrote off as stress were a serious health condition that took over five years to get back in normal range.

When you are navigating a difficult season of life, don’t neglect your physical or emotional health. Keep regular healthcare appointments, and don’t put off screenings and other procedures.

Document your thoughts and feelings in a journal. Read books, articles, and devotionals as sources of inspiration and encouragement. Self-care is not selfish; it is wise.

Expect a Change of Seasons

Feelings of hopelessness and helplessness often plague those navigating a challenging phase of life. Current circumstances imitate swimming in a vast ocean with no visible sign of shore. No matter how hard or fast you swim, you can’t make headway. Some days feel as if keeping your head above water takes all your strength.

When your situation is overwhelming, it feels as if nothing will ever change, but hold on. A change of seasons is on the way. Suddenly, you notice subtle differences—a lighter mood, lessening grief, renewed interest in something that once brought you pleasure. Then, one day, you awaken to a warm breeze and blue skies as a new season begins.

Watch for Pockets of Renewed Hope

One of the biggest challenges of a hard season of life is believing circumstances will improve. Trust relinquishes control and waits with expectancy. Look for small blessings as you wait for big changes. Take each day as it comes and watch for God’s mercies and faithfulness anew each morning. Every new day brings a fresh breath of renewed hope.

“But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:21-23 ESV).

While driving on an unfamiliar road, I saw what appeared to be construction traffic in the far right lane. I kept going, thinking the exit lane was beyond the long line of dump trucks. I was mistaken.

Suddenly, I saw the exit. Squeezing between bumper-to-bumper traffic was impossible, so I went to the next exit, miles down the road, crossed a bridge, and doubled back.

Sometimes, life is like a fast-approaching exit just beyond a long line of unmoving traffic. Many things factor into the ability to assess the situation and navigate through it. Other times, detours bring frustration and delay forward motion.

Following are thoughts on life’s detours:

Perceptions and Assumptions

When I neared the exit, I saw an area blocked off by barricades and trucks moving in and out of the area. To me, it appeared that the trucks in the right lane were an extension of the movement and work in the barricaded area, so I assumed the right lane was only for construction traffic.

What I couldn’t see beyond the trucks were cars and SUVs. Had I been able to see the full line of traffic I would have realized, in time, that it was the exit lane. Instead, what I perceived led to an incorrect assumption.

Often, assumptions land us in trouble. We base decisions on what we perceive, but perceptions aren’t always accurate. At a glance, we can’t see what is beyond the immediate or know the master plan behind current circumstances. Or we make assumptions based on prior experiences or someone else’s opinion.

If possible, take time to verify that what you perceive is accurate, and avoid making decisions without additional investigation.

Alternate Routes

I was annoyed about missing the exit and having to travel several miles beyond, and then back, to access the correct road. But in the process, I discovered the exit on the opposite side of the highway had less traffic, no construction zone, and deposited me closer to my destination.

Life is similar. We grow impatient with detours and delays only to find we’ve been saved from events or relationships that could prove detrimental or send us in a dead-end direction.

Delays are never easy, especially if they involve illness or some other slowdown that makes us feel we’re going nowhere and missing out on opportunities. But by looking for positives in detours and delays we gain perspective and maintain forward motion. Today’s delay or detour may result in an unencumbered path down the road.

Reaching the Destination

After arriving at my target location, I completed my mission and headed home. The journey was not without peril. I had to pay close attention to speeding drivers, avoid distractions, anticipate quick lane-changers, sudden slowdowns, and exit ramp backups, but, with focus, I made it home safely.

Our goals aren’t always easily reached, nor the journey a straight road. Detours come, roadblocks materialize, and alternate routes challenge, but by learning along the way and trusting God for wisdom and direction, we complete the journey.

You may feel you’ve encountered a roadblock for which there is no bypass or a detour that has you wandering far from your intended destination. Ask God for insights, help to find creative solutions, and directions to a straighter path. Realize your current waiting period may speed you ahead in days to come, and trust the process, no matter how tedious and slow.

“Trust in and rely confidently on the Lord with all your heart and do not rely on your own insight or understanding. In all your ways know and acknowledge and recognize Him, and He will make your paths straight and smooth [removing obstacles that block your way]” (Proverbs 3:5-6 AMP).

Recently, I noticed an extensive root system snaking across the bed where one of our largest trees is located. The roots are thick and sturdy and more visible now that the pine straw in the bed has settled. Perhaps drought conditions in the last few years have brought the root system to the surface, but whatever the cause, seeing this reminded me of the importance of a strong root system in our lives.

Anchor

Summertime in South Carolina is synonymous with pop-up thunderstorms that often include high winds. At times, the winds are violent enough to break limbs or topple trees that don’t possess an adequate root system.

A number of years ago, the tallest tree in our back yard uprooted one night during a thunderstorm. It shook the ground and rattled the windows when it hit. To look at the tree, you’d never have guessed it was likely to fall. The trunk was massive and thick roots spread in all directions. Yet, after the tree fell, an inspection of the root end of the tree showed the entire root system was brittle and decayed, leaving the trunk hollow in the middle.

Our lives can be the same. To a casual observer, you may look like you are confident, successfully juggling all the balls in your world. You may even feel in control and secure in yourself, your abilities, and the support system you’ve established, but if your world was suddenly rocked by an intense period of hardship, or unexpected grief, would you be able to handle it?

Sometimes, our personal root systems are damaged by lack of confidence, low self-esteem, negative self-talk, anger, or unforgiveness, creating a hollowness that is unseen by others, yet spills over into our thoughts and attitudes. Events or people may have contributed to the erosion. Now, before a life storm blows up, seemingly out of nowhere, examine your root structure and take steps to grow some healthier roots.

Surroundings

Often trees and plants spring up in places where they were not planted, awkward locations like a concrete expansion joint or beside the foundation of a building. These “volunteers” grow and flourish for a time, but eventually their surroundings cause them to be misshapen and stunted, or make it impossible to sustain life.

While trees and plants don’t choose their location, we have the opportunity to choose where we go and with whom we associate. At times, initial involvement with people, organizations, or activities may feel rewarding, as if we are making headway, moving forward with goals, or advancing in a particular area. But not all advancement is conducive to growth. Sometimes, too many thin roots running in multiple directions does nothing more than sap strength and thwart purpose.

Choose carefully with whom you associate and where you focus involvement. Make sure you are receiving and growing rather than being sapped and diverted from what is best for you.

Nourishment

A root system does more than allow a tree or plant to remain upright. Roots are the pathway for water and nutrients. In some cases, roots even help to prevent disease and encourage growth.

We usually think of nourishment only in terms of what we eat and drink, but in order to remain healthy, strong, and maintain forward motion, we need mental, emotional, and spiritual nourishment as well. Many people discount these areas of nourishment and fail to feed themselves with continual learning, ways of encouraging and expressing creativity, interaction with those who are grounded and wise, and the ingestion of spiritual food. But all are important to health, growth, and well-being.

Only by establishing and maintaining good relationships, continued learning, creative expression, and spiritual growth can we develop a strong root system that sustains when the storms of life come.

“But blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence. They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water” (Jeremiah 17:7-8a NLT).

Over the years, as I tried to decide to have this surgery, people told me, “You’ll know when it’s time,” and they were right. When you reach the point where pain and limited mobility cause you to feel like an old person, it’s time.

During the next few weeks, I’ll be recovering, and away from my computer, so I’m reposting enhanced versions of some of my favorite writings from the early days of Forward Motion. Hope you enjoy!

As I walked across a parking lot, I saw a man I know sitting in a car with the windows down. I waved, but he didn’t respond. Then I realized he was looking in his car’s rearview mirror, watching people behind him on the far side of the parking lot.

I spoke to him as I passed, teasing him about looking at life backwards. We laughed, but as I got in my car, I thought about how many people live their lives looking back, wishing for what was, or regretting what could have been.

However, the problem with looking back is you lose sight of what’s ahead. When your focus is behind, you’re likely to make a misstep or remain frozen in your current location or situation.

A Backwards View

Genesis provides an example of a backward-looker. Identified only as Lot’s wife, this woman couldn’t resist one last glance at her former life. Although she was warned of the danger, the temptation for one last backwards peek was stronger than the wisdom to move forward. That stolen glance resulted in death.

While having a rearview focus on life doesn’t necessarily cause physical death, it can cripple emotionally and spiritually, causing you to stagnate in grief, regret, fear, anger, unforgiveness, or precipitate a return to habits or thought patterns that hold you captive.

Backwards Thinking

Thinking backwards holds you captive to the past. Backwards thinking reminds you of mistakes and shackles you to regret and guilt. Thinking backwards holds you in suspended animation and prevents you from making headway with forward motion.

We’ve all made decisions we wish we hadn’t, said things we wish we could unsay, and done things we wish we could undo, but don’t allow ruminating on the past to rob you of the present and future.

Distortion

What we see in a rearview mirror is distorted. Some rearview mirrors show the warning “objects may be closer than they appear.” Rearview mirrors are also notorious for having “blind spots.”

Once, I almost pulled out in front of a police car because I didn’t see it in my rearview mirror. Thankfully, the officer was nice enough to give a quick toot of his horn to move me back over into my lane.

Looking at life from a rearview perspective is not without distortion. A past event you continue to ruminate on becomes bigger in your backward-looking vision, distorting it into something much worse than it really was.

Take steps to deflate rearview distortion. This may require forgiving someone, letting go of guilt and regret, or making yourself look at the event with a less self-absorbed focus. Often, we allow elements from the past to bloom out of proportion and overshadow reality.

The Panoramic Perspective

We see only a tiny portion of our total life picture. Our viewpoint is in snapshots rather than the full-reel, wide-lens perspective. Only God knows your full life progression. Only God can help you adjust your perspective from backwards to forward. Trust Him to heal your past and guide your future.

“But Lot’s wife never made it; she lagged behind her husband and looked back—despite the messenger’s advice—and turned into a pillar of salt” (Genesis 19:26 VOICE).

Only God can help you adjust your perspective from backwards to forward.

Last week, I joined my daughter and her family as we said goodbye to a beloved pet. We knew the day was coming. Sadie was 13 and had liver failure. She hung on a long time, doubtless cherishing the love as long as possible. But finally, her decline required the kindness of relieving her suffering.

I’ve never been much of a dog person, but Sadie was special. While she was still able, she’d greet me on dancing hind legs. The last time I was with her while she was mobile, I got in trouble for feeding her from my plate, something I never did with our dog, Biscuit. I have no defense; I’m a grandmother and grandmothers often do what they aren’t supposed to regarding grands, even fur versions.

Following are thoughts on bittersweet goodbyes:

Love and Loyalty

In many cases, the loyalty and love animals provide is deeper than what we experience from people.

Animals want to be near us. Animals are perceptive, realizing when we are upset and coming close to provide comfort, or noticing when suitcases come out, knowing that means a change in familiar routines and familiar humans.

Cats rub against legs, and purr in laps. Dogs follow us, lean against us, and “help” as we work on projects around the house. They know the sound of a rattling leash means a walk and a rustling bag means food. They know how to “work” us with a longing stare or sad eyes.

When I was growing up, we had a cat who occasionally got miffed about something. He would sit on top of the TV with his back to us until he decided to get over whatever annoyed him about his humans. Animals don’t harbor grudges and forgive quickly, unlike people.

Bittersweet Sorrow

The grief we feel after the death of a pet is often as intense as the grief we feel for loved ones.

When our dog, Biscuit, died, I felt as if I’d lost a family member. His death came the week before my son left for college. I could never define if I was mourning the pup-pup or adjusting to the empty nest. Probably both.

Biscuit was mauled by a stray pitbull. His injuries were so severe he lived only a week after the attack.

Saying goodbye to Sadie brought back memories of her last week with us. Letting Sadie go was especially hard for my grandson. Sadie had been a part of his life his whole life. He held her, talked to her, and sang to her.

Renewed grief slammed into me headlong as I listened to what he said.

“I never thought this would happen like this.”

Internally, I said, I never thought Jim would die when he did.

“I love you so much. I don’t want you to go.”

Ditto.

“Can’t we wait another day?”

Dear Lord, could I have one more day with Jim, a chance to say goodbye?

My grandson planned to leave when the vet came in to give Sadie THE shot. Instead, he stayed with his hand on her heart until it stopped, and then, emitted a guttural cry.

In that moment, I relived finding Jim’s lifeless body, placing my ear to his chest and discovering no sound, no rise and fall. Checking his neck and wrist for a pulse and finding none.

My guttural cries came later, after all the cards and calls stopped. My cries, my keening. came as I sifted through the contents of his home office, saw his distinctive script, his architectural lettering, and handled what he’d touched.

Death, human or animal, is separation, missing. Death is hard, but not without hope.

Hope for Tomorrow

God’s care for the animals he created is evident in his provision for their survival on the ark. God cemented the bond between animals and mankind when he allowed Adam to name all the animals.

I don’t know if animals will be in heaven, but one of the ways we comforted my grandson was to give him the image of “Bop” waiting for and taking care of Sadie.

Later that night, my daughter sent me an AI-generated photo of Jim holding Sadie in his lap. It brought tears, but also a smile. It provided hope and a reminder that this life on earth isn’t all there is. Because of God’s great love, faithfulness, and forgiveness, we are promised eternity in heaven for all who believe and accept salvation through Christ. The assurance of eternity in heaven fuels forward motion.

I know I will see Jim again, and I’m pretty sure Sadie and Biscuit will be right there with him.

“And God made the [wild] beasts of the earth according to their kinds, and domestic animals according to their kinds, and everything that creeps upon the earth according to its kind. And God saw that it was good (fitting, pleasant) and He approved it” (Genesis 1:25 AMPC).

“So out of the same ground the man was made from, the Eternal God sculpted every sort of animal and every kind of bird that flies up in the sky. Then He brought them to the man and gave him the authority to name each creature as he saw fit: whatever he decided to call it, that became its name” (Genesis 2:19 VOICE).

Last week, as I was leaving a restorative care facility after visiting a friend, I encountered a group of employees in the lobby.

“Are you a teacher?” one asked. “You have the presence of a teacher.”

I answered “no,” and then told her I am a writer.

“For real? What have you written? Do you write books?”

I recounted a little of my writing journey, including the fact that I often write tough topics.

Several asked my name, pulled out their phones, and quickly discovered my website.

“Oh, law! Look at that professional headshot! This lady is who she thinks she is!”

We talked a few minutes. I showed them how to access my blog, thanked them for their interest, and then bid them farewell.

After I got in the car, that phrase, “This lady is who she thinks she is,” replayed in my mind and caused me to think about how we perceive ourselves.

Following are thoughts on self-perception:

Accuracy

Is the view you hold of yourself accurate?

When I look in the mirror, I am usually okay with what I see. However, to get a more accurate perspective, a full-length mirror is required. When I see a portion of my reflection, I get a partial view, but full-length gives the total picture. Sometimes, that view isn’t what I consider acceptable.

Some people have an elevated perception of themselves. Perhaps they feel inferior for some reason and compensate with an inflated view of self to gain confidence. Unfortunately, self-elevation is often at the expense of someone they belittle to feel better about themselves.

An attitude of superiority is unattractive and dangerous. Invariably, those in the superior person’s orbit are crushed by hurtful words and deeds. But, eventually, eyes are opened and honesty prevails.

Honesty

My maternal grandmother often cautioned, “Now don’t you get the big head,” meaning, don’t think too highly of yourself.

Almost nothing is more annoying than a person with a “big head.” An attitude of superiority, self-centeredness, and criticism doesn’t endear you to others.

An honest assessment of oneself enhances forward motion and helps create genuine relationships. People gravitate toward those who are honest, compassionate, and forgiving. Conversely, people grow weary of those who require constant ego stroking.

Misperception

The reverse of the “big head” is those who think too little of themselves.

How do you see yourself? Sometimes, we view personal shortcomings with glaring clarity, while ignoring our positive qualities.

Misperception may stem from overly critical parents, grandparents, or other family members. I still remember the times extended family members commented openly and loudly on my pre-teen weight and what that did to my self-esteem. The damage lasted into adulthood.

Moving beyond labels others place on us is challenging. Listening to, and accepting, the negative, and sometimes cruel, statements of others saddles us with the unnecessary burden of meeting lofty or impossible standards.

Correction

The world is full of critics, or what I refer to as “negative cheerleaders.” Forward motion comes when we learn to see ourselves from God’s perspective as a beloved and valued child of the King.

We are God’s masterpiece, created in His image. So, no matter what falsehoods others have drilled into your brain, you are God’s creation. By faith in Jesus Christ, through God’s grace, you are adopted into God’s family and gain a new identity.

With this new identity, comes the certainty that you are who God knows, and says, you are.

“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago” (Ephesians 2:10 NLT).

“Because of the grace allotted to me, I can respectfully tell you not to think of yourselves as being more important than you are; devote your minds to sound judgment since God has assigned to each of us a measure of faith.” (Romans 12:3 VOICE).

I’m a creature of habit. Most of us are. I eat the same thing for breakfast almost every day. It’s a challenge for me to step outside my comfort zone on certain things, breakfast being one of them, but recently, I ate something different for breakfast. It was delicious!

What holds you back from trying new things or breaking free of old patterns?

Breaking Patterns

My mother was an excellent seamstress. She made her own clothes, and many of mine. One of her sewing strengths was the ability to adjust patterns for a better fit. She knew many patterns so well she could “eyeball” where they needed adjustment. Those adjustments rendered a custom fit and stunning creations.

Some life patterns are good; others aren’t. Making the decision to let go of destructive habits is challenging. Many times, those patterns are so engrained they feel right, yet you know they aren’t.

The first step is to admit certain patterns are detrimental, and then, make the effort to do differently. Breaking old patterns requires determination, prayer, and God-given strength.

The Gift of Different

This year, we had a different beach experience. We rented a house at a beach I’d never visited and had a lovely week of fun and family togetherness.

One day I took the grandchildren shopping and then we ate pizza for lunch. Another day, I slipped away for an impromptu breakfast with the two oldest. And on the final day, we all took a dolphin-watch boat ride, which none of us had ever done. It was amazing!

For some reason, those of us who have chalked up multiple decades of living tend to associate different with not as good. I think that point of view is a mistake. A willingness to risk different brings unexpected gifts and surprises.

New Discoveries

Do you do the same things and go to the same places because you already know the outcome? The consistency of the familiar promises no unwelcome unexpectedness. Yet, thinking beyond sameness leads to fresh discoveries.

Have you taken a less-traveled road and uncovered hidden gems? Or read a genre or author you’ve haven’t read before and realized you’ve been missing out?

New discoveries are delightful and stimulating.

Enhancing Forward Motion

This week, back from vacation, I almost fell into my monotonous Monday routine. And then, I stopped myself.

I thought about how I abandoned social media almost entirely while gone and didn’t miss it. I remembered multiple days of not knowing what time it was and not caring. Spending hours laughing, talking, working jigsaw puzzles, enjoying my family, and savoring every moment. I replayed the serenity of watching the sunrise, colors of the sea, and crashing waves, and marveling at the beauty of God’s creation.

Stepping beyond engrained patterns stimulates creativity and enhances forward motion.

What will you do this week that takes you beyond your comfort zone and brings you the joy of different?

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will” (Romans 12:2 NIV).

This is a summer of parchingly high temperatures, punctuated by torrential rain. Even with irrigation, sections of lawn appear dry beyond recovery, and then, comes the rain.

Often, we experience seasons when we feel parched, exhausted and disheartened by life circumstances.

Following are reflections on thriving in a parched world:

Sustenance

In the last days of my mother’s life, she stopped eating and drinking. Numerous times each day, I held a straw to her mouth and encouraged her to drink or coaxed her to open her mouth for a spoonful of broth, but she clamped her lips tightly and turned away. Life-sustaining water and nourishment were available, within inches, yet she refused to accept them.

Although many pride themselves on being self-sufficient, we all need sources of sustenance unrelated to physical nourishment. We thrive when we have those in our lives who speak wisdom and help us gain perspective when ours is skewed.

We advance mentally and creatively through interaction with others, personal learning and reflection, and the discovery of sources of joy and inspiration. Spiritual nourishment balances our lives and sustains our souls.

Grow

It only takes a few hours of intense heat and direct sunlight for plants to wilt and wither. After watering, you can see leaves and flowers slowly lift and revive. The same growth-producing qualities of water occur when we challenge ourselves mentally.

A willingness to grow, to stretch beyond what is easy and familiar, encourages forward motion, propels us onward, and prevents disconnection. While growth requires determination, the effort brings big rewards.

Clean and Refresh

On a hot day, water is the best thirst-quenching source. After working hard in the heat, a cleansing shower relaxes and refreshes.

Perhaps there are areas in your life that could benefit from cleansing. Do you need to come clean about hidden vices that require falsehoods to keep them under wraps? Are you lying to yourself about how your actions affect those around you, or the detrimental impact of your lifestyle on your health?

When I prepared my childhood home for sale, I saw areas of deferred maintenance, things that were easy to ignore because they didn’t seem to be urgent enough to warrant the expenditure. But little things add up, and suddenly, you are faced with a task that seems insurmountable.

Tending regularly to areas in our lives that need attention lessens the stress of facing and tackling a task of much bigger proportions later.

Power Through

Long ago, humans learned to capture and use the motion of rushing, falling water to power devices to aid in everyday life. However, if we are wise, we respect the power of water.

Currents in rivers and the ocean are greater than our own physical strength. Flooding from heavy rains, tornadoes, or hurricanes produce massive destruction so we need to be aware of the power and force of water.

The prophet Isaiah equated life difficulties to deep water. If you feel you are in over your head, exhausted and barely able to continue treading water because of job loss, financial hardship, a medical diagnosis, a death, divorce, or the uncertainties of life, remember, God is available, a source of rescue. And there are those who are willing to be “God with skin on” to you, providing encouragement and support to enable you to power through deep waters and strong currents to safely reach shore.

If you feel you are in over your head, exhausted and barely able to continue treading water, remember, God is available, a source of rescue.

Discover Peace

For many years, I experienced peace in the pool, or beside the pool, at my childhood home. The beach brings that same sense of calmness and rest. Being in or near water provides a feeling of relaxation. We sleep better after a day of swimming or while listening to rain drum on the roof. God provides a special sense of relaxation through the feel, sound, and sight of water.

Finding peace in the current climate of our world is challenging. Media reports, global conflict, and general uncertainty combine to keep us in turmoil. Do you long for peace?

The beauty of nature calms and soothes. Adding communion with Creator God to time spent in nature enhances calmness and brings peace. The One who divided water, created the universe, and sustains our world, hovers over us, sees our struggles, and knows our needs. He is peace.

“Jesus stood and called out [in a loud voice], ‘If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink! He who believes in Me [who adheres to, trusts in, and relies on Me], as the Scripture has said, ‘From his innermost being will flow continually rivers of living water’” (John 7:37-38 AMP).

As a child, I remember a summer when rain was an everyday occurrence. We had a new swimming pool and I longed for sunny days and warm temperatures. But each morning, I woke up to the sound of rain pelting the roof and filling the gutters. Not only did the rain continue day after day, but the weather was unseasonably cool. Days melted into weeks as the rainy summer dragged on.

Often, we don’t appreciate multiple days of rain. Rain interferes with our plans, making us cancel or reschedule. For some, rain is depressing. But there are benefits to life seasons filled with rain, among them, an appreciation for growth and the return of sun and warmth.

Following are reasons to be grateful for rainy seasons:

Revive

In this world of noise, constant activity and stress, rain slows us. At first, you may be resistant to a decrease in motion, but once the pace slows you realize your level of exhaustion. Allow yourself to rest and reflect. Resist the urge to start multiple projects and take advantage of down time. Revive physically, emotionally, and spiritually during slower periods of life. You aren’t lazy; you are in recovery mode.

Rethink

We often engage in busyness to avoid thinking about something that is challenging or difficult. We create reasons to sidestep addressing an issue, like a health concern or a relationship problem that you don’t want to think about or act on.

Rainy days provide a chance to rethink and reorient. Be still. Think. Pray, asking for perception, wisdom, and direction. Then make a list of things you are doing to avoid dealing with your challenge, and in a column next to each item, what is involved in facing the issue head-on. Then restructure your schedule to allow time for action, giving implementation a place of priority.

Restore

Restoration of any kind takes time and patience. When someone attempts restoration of furniture, photos, or houses, it is often a multi-step endeavor. If you skip steps, or rush the process, you may not be happy with the results.

Think of what in your life needs restoration. Is it discipline? A relationship? Health? Where is damage and how can it be restored. Begin restoration, knowing it will be a process that requires planning, time, attention, and patience.

Refresh

What refreshes you? Are you refreshed after gathering with family, or sharing a burden with a trusted friend? Are you invigorated by spending time alone? Some are refreshed by time spent in nature. Still others find refreshment in the pages of scripture. Find what refreshes your spirit and feeds your soul.

Renew

The word “renew” has many synonyms: regenerate, revive, rebuild, resume, replenish.

Rain revives, restores, refreshes, renews, cleanses, and propels forward motion.

Perhaps you feel your life could use one or more of these r-words. We all experience seasons of life when we long for a boost, when we need a refreshing shower of revival and reinvigoration.

Often at the heart of this need is a spiritual thirst. Take a deep dive into God’s word. Plunge into prayer. Renew your relationship with your Creator and enjoy showers of blessings.

“I will bless them and the places surrounding my hill. I will send down showers in season; there will be showers of blessing” (Ezekiel 34:26 NIV).

“Sing out your thanks to him; sing praises to our God, accompanied by harps. He covers the heavens with clouds, sends down the showers, and makes the green grass grow in mountain pastures” (Psalm 147:7-8 TLB).

One of my orchids has created an interesting stem growth pattern. Instead of moving in a “normal” direction, the stem branched into a wide arc that continues to wind its way in an ever-expanding, circular path of growth.

Sometimes, our journey is similar. We begin with goals and dreams, but often, life unfolds in a different-than-expected progression.

Following are thoughts on life’s circuitous path:

Wandering

How do you handle a circuitous life path? Do you go with the flow, or fight what you perceive as the wrong direction?

Some life seasons feel like an aimless wander down a winding path. Perhaps, instead, a wandering path leads us to a place of surety when we identify the correct route. However, don’t let wandering become a permanent state. Always search for a defined route, even if it seems too steep, too hard, or too impossible.

Puzzle Pieces

If you work jigsaw puzzles, you know how daunting the task feels when you first open the box and look at the jumble of pieces. How can you ever make sense of all the colors and shapes and form them into a cohesive pattern that results in a finished scene? Where is the starting place?

The phrase “eat the elephant one bite at a time” comes to mind. The gist of this phrase is to approach a seemingly impossible task in small segments, instead of stressing about how everything fits together at once.

Many puzzle-workers find corners or side pieces first to form a framework for the whole. But you may be one who searches for like colors and works in internal segments. Either is fine; both working toward solving the puzzle.

When life throws you a handful of disjointed puzzle pieces, look for similar patterns. How does this segment fit that one, or does it? Keep trying until you find a fit. And if nothing fits together, look beyond, to another section or group of pieces, to gain forward motion.

Utilizing Discernment

God-given discernment is a gift we often leave unwrapped. Scripture reminds us we will find God, if we seek him wholeheartedly. (Jeremiah 29:13)

God provides a wealth of wisdom and discernment, when we ask Him. So, when you feel you are wandering without direction, and none of the puzzle pieces fit together, ask God for help. He is more than willing to instruct, direct, and guide.

Trusting God for Next Steps

You don’t have to navigate life in your own strength. In fact, we are more likely to mess up when we attempt to travel a path of our own choosing, one that feels right, but is off course.

So what of my orchid with the wandering stem? The path of the stem seems aimless, but I realized it is following the light, moving forward, growing, and blooming in a light-infused direction.

May it be the same for you. Follow the Light, Jesus the Christ, and He will lead you in the straight path for your life.

“Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life” (John 8:12 NLT).

“With all my heart I have sought You, [inquiring of You and longing for You];
Do not let me wander from Your commandments [neither through ignorance nor by willful disobedience]” (Psalm 119:10 AMP).

Follow the Light, Jesus the Christ, and He will lead you in the straight path for your life.
