AUSTIN, Texas – Mar. 1, 2023 – uShip, the fast, easy, and affordable way to transport large items like furniture, vehicles, and freight, today announced the addition of five new partners to its In-Home Delivery program, including:

uShip In-Home Delivery is designed for online sellers of new, handcrafted, vintage, and refurbished furniture, as well as oversized e-commerce like kayaks, e-bikes, and medical equipment. Sellers can access instant rates, a private first-to-last mile carrier network, blanket-wrap service, dedicated support, automated booking, status updates, and best-in-class shipment protection. In 2022, 268,000 business shipments were listed on uShip.

“Shipping large items, especially furniture of all kinds, can be a black box for emerging and even established online sellers and marketplaces,” said Heather Hoover-Salomon, interim CEO of uShip. “uShip In-Home Delivery digitizes and automates the shipping process so deliveries happen faster and with fewer claims through our nationwide network of independent transporters.”

Use Cases: uShip In-Home Delivery in Action

Nationwide Expansion

AptDeco has integrated with uShip’s pricing, booking, and tracking APIs to quickly accelerate and scale its furniture marketplace to a nationwide buying audience, beyond its Northeast and West Coast origins.

“Establishing a national footprint is key to AptDeco’s mission to make it easy, affordable and safe for everyone to participate in furniture circularity, and uShip In-Home Delivery gives us an instant coast-to-coast carrier network to scale our operation,” said Ella Tay, VP of Brand Strategy and Partnerships, AptDeco.

Best-in-Class Support

Craze Furniture and Antiques is a family-owned and operated business with furniture covering a wide variety of eras and styles. The team wanted to expand outside its Wake County, N.C., area – and uShip In-Home Delivery helped deliver that growth.

“We needed a partner who had the customer experience in mind – we’re lucky to have found that partner in uShip,” said Craig Kinser, Owner, Craze Furniture and Antiques. “Beyond the instant quotes and seamless checkout, the real shining star of uShip is the support staff. The team has gone above and beyond.”

Shipping Peace of Mind

Jory Brigham Design, an online seller of 100% handcrafted furniture focused on timeless aesthetics and sustainable materials, says it feels secure in putting its pieces into the hands of transporters on uShip.

“Our experience with uShip has been impressive,” said Jory Brigham, Owner/President of Jory Brigham Design, Inc. “The customer success managers are VERY helpful and we know the transporters by name. The accountability is priceless – the opposite of what we experienced with past companies.”

White Glove Delivery

TUNE Studio sells state-of-the-art performance technology for the nervous system. Tested and proven by NIH and Mayo Clinic, these 100-lb beds tune the body to its optimal state through medical-grade vibrations.

“TUNE decided to work with uShip because having white glove delivery allowed for a better experience for our customers and peace of mind for our company,” said Kyle Godrey-Ryan, founder of TUNE.

uShip also announced CEO Kris Lamb has stepped down to focus on family medical matters. Chief Operating Officer (COO) Heather Hoover-Salomon assumes the role of interim CEO, while Lamb remains as a senior advisor with the company. uShip expects to name a permanent chief executive by the end of March.

“The uShip Board and I fully support Kris’s decision,” said Jim Martell, executive chairman of uShip’s board of directors. “He’s served uShip incredibly well as CEO since mid-2019, navigating the company through the pandemic, a record 2021, and a profitable 2022.”  In all, Lamb has spent five years at uShip, serving as CTO from December 2017 to July 2019 before becoming CEO.

Hoover-Salomon has served as uShip’s COO since July 2019 and, before that, as executive vice president for operations. She is uShip’s longest-tenured employee, joining in 2005 as a public relations and marketing intern.

AUSTIN, Texas – Jan. 13, 2022 – uShip, the leading first-to-last mile solution for large item shipping, announced Keith Varga has joined as Chief Technology Officer. The company also announced its 2021 financial results, which set uShip records for gross shipping volume, revenue per employee, and total earnings to its network of carriers.

Varga Joins uShip
Varga brings more than 30 years of technical and logistics experience to uShip. He most recently held tech leadership roles at Pitney Bowes and also spent more than 17 years at Newgistics. LinkedIn: Keith Varga. Read Five Questions with Keith.

“Keith brings that rare combination of both technical and logistics backgrounds to this CTO role,” said uShip CEO Kris Lamb. “His data architecture experience is critical as it underpins the digital freight matching process across our entire transportation marketplace.”

“I am very excited to join uShip during this time of increased demand and growth that allows me to utilize my technical, logistics, and e-commerce experience,” said Varga. The team has positioned itself over the last year to make significant platform and business-focused advancements.”

2021: A Banner Year
Defying snarled supply chains and tight trucking capacity, uShip saw oversized e-commerce and furniture (new and used), as well as vehicles, boats, motorcycles, LTL freight, and more, get digitally booked, managed, and tracked through uShip.

More than 850,000 shipments – or one every 37 seconds – were listed on uShip resulting in $200 million in gross shipping volume, a 57.5% year-over-year increase – both all-time highs. That translated into $1.6 million per employee, more than 7x than the 2021 Transportation & Logistics industry average, according to CSI Market.

Behind the Wheel, Ahead of the Curve
uShip’s nationwide network of first-to-last mile carriers, one of the most unique in the country, covered 226 million miles in 2021, or the equivalent of 9,000 trips around the planet. Behind the wheel in sprinter vans, box trucks, and pickup trucks with trailers, providers on uShip earned 42% more in 2021 over the year prior and booked more than $10 million for 10 consecutive months (March-December).

“A balanced marketplace of strong shipper demand, a dedicated provider network, and technology from our laser-focused internal team made uShip’s record 2021 possible,” said Lamb. “With the wind at our backs in 2022, growth will come from the ability to book and transact off the uShip platform through APIs in our key segments.”

Segment Spotlight: In-Home Delivery
uShip In-Home Delivery’s revenue jumped 66% year-over-year, driven by a growing stable of online resellers and/or re-commerce marketplaces for oversized goods, primarily resold furniture. Partners include Etsy, Chairish, 1stDibs, Vibe Kayaks, and more.

The secondhand furniture market is expected to top $16.6 billion by 2025 as shoppers get more comfortable buying furniture online and appreciate vintage, upcycled, and refurbished furnishings, according to The Chairish 2021 Home Furnishings Resale Report.

“Chairish shoppers are vintage lovers and delight in the thrill of the hunt. uShip’s first-to-final mile delivery model has helped us deliver on that excitement,” said Sharon Saffel, SVP of Platform Services at Chairish.

Segment Spotlight: LTL (less-than-truckload) Freight
uShip’s LTL revenue grew 15% year-over-year as small and midsized businesses sought a digital freight solution that allowed them to book directly with top LTL carriers entirely through uShip. In 2022, look for uShip’s instant rates for LTL freight to be even more accessible to TMS (transportation management systems), such as AscendTMS, and 3PL providers via API, similar to uShip’s partnership with GovPlanet for online auctions.

Segment Spotlight: uShip Logistics
uShip Logistics, a wholly-owned subsidiary of uShip, Inc., grew revenue 67% year-over-year, providing instant rates and managed transport services for auto dealerships moving units from auctions, on trades, and to out-of-area buyers at home. In 2021, uShip Logistics became the sole shipping provider on the eBay Motors mobile app.

“As consumers face empty dealership lots and delays, eBay Motors has become a preferred destination for buying and selling vehicles. uShip Logistics helps us provide a superior experience throughout the transaction thanks to instant rates, tracking, and reliable, quality service,” said Ron Jaiven, GM of Vehicles US, at eBay.

In 2022, as the rapidly changing used car market evolves, look for uShip Logistics to provide API-driven rates and managed transport services to more dealership groups, as well as online dealership aggregators.

AscendTMS to integrate uShip’s LTL rates and services, leveling the logistics playing field for business shippers nationwide

TAMPA, Fla. and AUSTIN, Texas – May 4, 2021 – InMotion Global, Inc. and uShip, the leading logistics technology platform for large and bulky goods, today announced an agreement to provide real-time less-than-truckload (LTL) rates, booking, tracking, and billing services to customers of InMotion Global’s AscendTMS® logistics platform, the world’s most popular and top-rated Transportation Management System (TMS).

The agreement is significant for millions of small and medium-sized business shippers across the U.S., including nearly 40,000 shipping customers already using AscendTMS to manage their full truckload (FTL) operations and movements.

Integrating uShip’s LTL rates and services gives AscendTMS customers direct access to complete FTL and LTL capabilities in a single software platform. Neither AscendTMS nor uShip are brokers, so users of the combined platform can be assured of the absolute best direct rates and zero conflict of interest. The integration is expected to be available in Fall 2021.

While the industry’s largest shippers, brokers, and carriers pay millions to combine deep FTL and LTL capabilities within a single TMS, AscendTMS customers now get the same combination in a completely neutral marketplace for a low monthly subscription fee.

“Incorporating uShip’s automated LTL rates and freight services deep into the AscendTMS platform further levels the logistics playing field for millions of SMB shippers, brokers, 3PLs, and carriers who can now get enterprise-level FTL / LTL service on one single unified logistics platform,” says Tim Higham, CEO of AscendTMS. “uShip’s neutral marketplace approach mirrors the AscendTMS philosophy where digital freight technology drives speed and transparent pricing with absolutely no conflict of interest for our joint customers.”

“Our agreement with AscendTMS is the latest example of our LTL API that integrates our services into other platforms to support small and medium business shippers who are embracing digital freight technology at an incredible rate,” says Kris Lamb, CEO of uShip. “Combining FTL and LTL in the same neutral marketplace gives shippers the best of both worlds, saving them time, money, and energy.”

uShip’s less-than-truckload platform, which gives small and medium businesses access to instant direct quotes from over 30 of the freight industry’s top national and regional LTL carriers, saw a 43 percent year-over-year revenue growth in Q1 2021.

In November, uShip announced an agreement to provide its LTL rates and services to GovPlanet® government surplus online auctions. GovPlanet is owned by Ritchie Bros., a leading asset management and disposition company.

AUSTIN, Texas – February 9, 2021 – uShip, the logistics technology platform for large and bulky goods, today announced 27-year tech veteran Parimala (Pari) Rao has joined the company as its Chief Technology Officer.

Rao comes to uShip at a pivotal time in the company’s 17-year history. Over the past several years, the company’s online freight platform has expanded its support of business shippers, especially those in large and bulky e-commerce, giving them the ability to digitally book, manage and track their shipments. This has helped uShip add key partners and achieve recent record growth.

As CTO, Rao will supercharge uShip’s products and scale to meet the increasingly sophisticated needs of high-volume business shippers and retailers, and to fortify its technology and infrastructure to advance uShip’s advantage in the market.

“uShip sits on an amazing opportunity and I’m thrilled to hold the technical keys that will take us to the next level and beyond,” says Rao. “The company has been a pioneer in freight digitization. As it continues leading the market and solving real-world shipping problems, especially in large and bulky e-commerce, there’s so much we can do at scale with data science, cloud, APIs, and more, while maintaining a safe and secure marketplace.”

Since 2004, uShip’s platform has digitally processed more than 11 million shipments and amassed a network of 35,000 active and independent transportation providers. eBay, Etsy, Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, and RumbleOn are among uShip’s partners.

Tale of Two Decades

Rao’s career journey in software innovation is largely a tale of two decades and two coasts: the first decade defined by technology on the west coast where she built complex high caliber software technology at companies such as IBM, Google and Microsoft; the second decade on the east coast defined by the technology and innovation she directly applied at companies such as The New York Times and most recently Sparkfund, where she was their CTO. LinkedIn: Parimala Rao

Today she is a thought leader in Big Data, the Internet of Things, data science, cloud platform, cybersecurity, development, scalable infrastructure, APIs, and more. In her past roles, she’s also led initiatives on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and mentoring, while running grouplets for companies focused on Agile development and innovation. She is the winner of the prestigious “Publisher Award” for driving innovation in technology at The New York Times, where she focused her energy on re-digitization of the entire platform for web and mobile, while driving new product development.

“Digital advancement and a digital-first culture have been at the heart of Pari’s career, whether that’s been early days at Google or the digital evolution of The New York Times,” says Kris Lamb, CEO of uShip. “We couldn’t be more excited for her to drive forward the technical evolution of uShip’s digital freight platform as we continue to see shipping and logistics play such a key role for many companies.”

Rao, who is working remotely from the New York area, fills the CTO role previously held by Lamb, who moved to CEO in June 2019. She has a Master of Science in Software Engineering from the University of Liverpool, UK, where she topped the University and completed her dissertation in Artificial Intelligence.

AUSTIN, Texas – November 10, 2020 – uShip, the logistics technology platform for large and bulky goods, today announced an agreement to provide less-than-truckload (LTL) freight services to GovPlanet® government surplus online auctions.

Through uShip, items sold by state, local, and federal agencies, including military, during GovPlanet’s weekly auctions get multiple shipping quotes instantly from top national LTL carriers, including FedEx Freight®, YRC Freight®, and Central Transport®.

The logistics integration with GovPlanet.com saves buyers time and hassle by eliminating the need to call carriers for rates, streamlining the Bill of Lading process, and centralizing shipment management.

GovPlanet is owned by Ritchie Bros., a leading asset management and disposition company and a strategic partner of uShip since 2009.

Best Quarter in Company History

uShip also reported today that two key components of its business shipping platform — LTL and In-Home Delivery — drove uShip’s best core-segment quarter (Q3 2020) in the company’s 16-year history. Each month more than 4,100 new businesses register on uShip.

uShip’s less-than-truckload platform, which gives small and medium businesses access to direct quotes from among 30+ of the freight industry’s top national and regional LTL carriers, has seen a 30 percent year-over-year increase in revenue.

uShip’s In-Home Delivery platform, which serves online sellers of large and bulky goods ranging from furniture to kayaks to e-bikes, saw 67 percent year-over-year booking growth as e-commerce has continued its explosive growth during the pandemic. Year-over-year Q3 revenue jumped 47 percent.

uShip counts Etsy, Chairish, Vibe Kayaks, and many others among its large and bulky e-commerce partners.

uShip’s Etsy partnership, which includes shipment tracking integration powered by AfterShip, is further contributing to growth. Year-over-year Q3 booking growth skyrocketed 481 percent as Etsy sellers use the uShip platform to transport their one-of-a-kind large and bulky items, including handmade farm tables, vintage furniture, and other custom items.

“We’ve seen a tremendous confluence of factors contributing to what was a record quarter for uShip,” said Kris Lamb, CEO of uShip. “E-commerce is absolutely booming, truck capacity is very tight, and partnerships like GovPlanet, Etsy, Chairish, and others are hitting their stride. We’re well-positioned for a strong holiday season and to hit the ground running in 2021.”

AUSTIN, Texas – October 29, 2019 – uShip has teamed up with Etsy, the creative marketplace for artists and sellers across the globe, to offer its shop owners a powerful, turnkey solution for shipping large and bulky items to ultimately increase sales.

When it comes to selling furniture and other large items on Etsy, traditional shipping options typically aren’t cost- or time-efficient for small shop owners.  They can’t get volume rates, and most freight carriers expect sellers to pack and crate items before pickup, adding as much as $60 per shipment according to one Etsy shop owner. Parcel carriers, on the other hand, simply aren’t equipped to handle oversized items, often resulting in exorbitant and unpredictable rates.

TRUE FULL-SERVICE DELIVERY FOR ETSY SELLERS

With uShip, Etsy sellers get blanket-wrapped, room-of-choice delivery and full tracking for buyers and sellers. Sellers also enjoy instant shipping price estimates; totally transparent rates; affordable, high-quality insurance; fewer handoffs per shipment; and an account credit on every completed uShip transaction.

On top of these premium features, sellers also get a key edge on competitors by choosing their own carriers. Every carrier on uShip has their own profile, which includes helpful information along with reviews and ratings from real past customers. Before booking, users can review each carrier who submits a quote and communicate about the shipment in advance. Our extensive network of experienced, feedback-rated carriers gives you the power to choose the right partner for you on every shipment.

“The emergence of the marketplace economy has opened the doors for retailers micro to macro to sell anything and everything online,” said Kris Lamb, CEO of uShip. “Etsy is a leader in enabling these sellers to build their businesses. However, shipping friction, especially large and bulky items, remains a challenge. We’re thrilled to be a solution for Etsy’s vast group of shop owners.”

EASIER SHIPMENT PRICING

Citing insights that suggest shoppers are 20% more likely to purchase an item if it’s offered with free shipping, Etsy recently announced that it would prioritize search results for those sellers who offer free shipping. For large item sellers, offering free shipping might seem impossible. With uShip’s smart pricing calculator, however, sellers can predict and roll in shipping costs to each item, making free shipping a reality.

WHAT SHOP OWNERS ARE SAYING

Brad Stanwick operates a store specializing in English furniture on Etsy. His store, TheParsonsNose, now either offers free shipping on its items, with shipping rolled into prices, or displays a flat, up-front delivery rate right on the item’s listing.

“Using uShip has been better for my bottom line,” Brad says. “I ran the numbers and figured out that I can ship my furniture almost anywhere in the country for about $250 to $300 through uShip. So, I took a leap.”

By Mark Soloman // Freightwaves // Think those who order heavy goods such as furniture online don’t have the same fulfillment and delivery demands as those ordering smaller items that remain the staple of e-commerce? Think again.

Of 330 consumers surveyed who bought an oversized piece of furniture last year, 56 percent said they would avoid a boutique retailer if the shipping costs were too high, while 36 percent said they wouldn’t use such a retailer if the delivery windows were too long, according to a survey released August 29 by logistics technology company uShip and research firm YouGov. About 27 percent abandoned a boutique retailer’s cart because they were turned off by the delivery expense, and 26 percent said replacing their current furniture was either too difficult or costly, the survey found.

In what may be considered a wake-up call for specialty furniture retailers, about 40 percent of respondents said they would turn to mass merchants like Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) and Wayfair (NYSE:W) if a boutique retailer doesn’t offer free shipping. A smaller percentage – hovering in the low teens – said that big retailers either have too many furniture selection options or don’t have the products they want.

About 47 percent would track their order status once a day even though they knew the shipment would take weeks to arrive, a sign of customer impatience with the delivery process, according to the survey.

The results, if they are an accurate measure of the online furniture-buying public, elevates the challenges facing retailers and their shipping and logistics providers. Furniture is a high-cost item that is difficult to ship and is prone to damage. Claims can be very costly, and retailers have been burned using general delivery firms rather than specialists. Probably the most highly regarded carrier in the furniture home delivery market, Watkins and Shepherd, was closed earlier this month by transport and logistics company Schneider National Inc. (NASDAQ:SNDR) when Schneider said it would exit the final-mile delivery business.

An executive of an online furniture retailer that specializes in upholstered products said the survey’s findings were “pretty much spot on.” The executive’s only disagreement was that its customers typically track their shipments once a week, on average, if there is a multi-week delivery window. The executive requested not to be identified.

“Customer priorities are free shipping and then fast shipping,” the executive said. “Even if it [shipping] is built into the cost, it is much easier for consumers to understand and calculate when all they have to do is pay for the piece.”

According to Statista, worldwide online furniture sales will grow 11.8 percent per year from 2018 through 2022.

The current annual value of online heavy goods orders is pegged at about $10 billion.

By DC Velocity Staff // Most online shoppers will avoid sellers that charge high shipping costs or have slow delivery times, study finds.

Demand for fast, free shipping continues to shape all aspects of the retail landscape, with consumers now growing impatient with high delivery costs for oversized items, according to a survey by logistics technology platform uShip, released today.

Conducted in conjunction with research firm YouGov, the Dream Decor study homed in on the furniture market, revealing that most buyers will avoid sellers that charge high shipping costs or that have slow delivery times. The study focused on key differences between smaller, boutique retailers and their big-box counterparts.

More than half of consumers who purchased an oversized item in the last year (56%) said they would avoid a boutique retailer if they encountered high shipping costs, the study showed, and 36% said they would avoid a boutique retailer if it had slow delivery or a long delivery window. The study also revealed that:

  • 27% of consumers have decided not to purchase a piece of furniture after it was in their cart due to high shipping costs;
  • 26%  said it’s too expensive or difficult to replace their current furniture;
  • 40% would turn to a major retailer like Amazon or Wayfair if a boutique retailer didn’t offer free shipping;
  • Nearly half (47%) said they would check their tracking number or status at least once a day if they were expecting a piece of furniture that would take weeks to arrive, suggesting consumer impatience with long delivery times, the study author’s said.

The Dream Decor study also found that small retailers have a big opportunity to attract buyers that prefer one-of-a-kind items over mass-produced furniture—if they can get a better handle on shipping costs and delivery times. Fourteen percent of buyers say large retailers have too many furniture options, 13% say they can’t find items they like at the larger retailers, and 11% say they have regretted purchasing mass-produced furniture from large, major retailers, the study showed.
