All eyes are on the new iPhone Duo and all minds are on just which MagSafe accessories it will or won't work with.
iPhone Duo is the star of the show with its folding inner display and small external display. There are compromises to make this size and form factor work, but perhaps not as many as there could have been.
There was some concern over whether MagSafe would even be included in the device, but it is there. However, you'll likely need specific accessories for it, as your MagSafe wallet and battery may not fit.

Samsung has the exclusive deal to provide screens for the iPhone Duo.
It was already known that Samsung makes the displays for the iPhone Duo, and also that the screen company had an exclusive deal. Apple was seemingly forced to accept the arrangement because no other firm was able to supply the required screens.
Now according to leaker Instant Digital posting on the Chinese social media site Weibo, the deal is a three-year one. It's to cover the current iPhone Duo and future models during that time, and they say Samsung is charging $250 per panel.

It had been rumored for such a long time, and so many leaks got little details right, but overall the iPhone Duo has been Apple's best-kept secret in years. Talking to Tom's Guide and TechRadar in a new interview, Greg Joswiak, senior vice president of worldwide marketing, says he's "super proud" of that.
"We put extra security on it, we didn't talk about it to anyone," he said. "We had a very funny codename, which I won't even repeat, that had nothing to do with it."

Annual subscriptions are usually cheaper than monthly plans, but until recently, require upfront payment before users know if an app is worth a long-term commitment. Apple is now offering a contract-style subscription system for some third-party App Store apps, allowing users to spread annual pricing across monthly payments.
The tradeoff is that users still commit to a full year of payments even if they cancel early. Instead of paying for an annual subscription all at once, users can spread the cost across monthly payments while agreeing to complete a 12-month commitment.
Developers get a lower-looking monthly price without giving up the predictability of an annual-style subscription. Monthly payment options are available for select third-party subscription services running on iOS 26.4, iPadOS 26.4, macOS Tahoe 26.4, tvOS 26.4, and visionOS 26.4 or later.

Apple has no control over what countries choose to name a location
The United States President has begun using the names on the map as some kind of negotiating tactic in ongoing trade wars he started. After executive orders changed The Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario in the GNIS database, Apple Maps reflected that change.
According to a report from The Washington Post, Democratic congressional representatives from New Mexico have asked Apple and Google to not comply if another name change is attempted. The requests have been made after multiple social media posts from the President, but no executive order or official plans have been made.

Denon Home series speakers review: These new smart speakers support Siri & Apple Home with premium audio
Japanese audio brand Denon is out with its latest range of speakers: the Denon Home 200, Denon Home 400, and Denon Home 600. While all different sizes and price points, the entire line caters to Apple users with support for conversing with Siri and AirPlay.

Apple's iPhone Duo opens up to a size similar to iPad mini
Open, the iPhone Duo has a 7.6-inch OLED display that is just a few tenths of an inch smaller than the current iPad mini's 8.3-inch IPS display. The iPhone Duo also has the added benefit of folding up when you don't need it, making it eminently more pocketable.
That alone is enough to make some people throw their iPad mini to the curb. That may be the case for you, too, but the iPhone Duo isn't perfect. And there's still a place in the lineup for a tablet the size of the iPad mini.

Launching in the United States on September 14, the plan removes the device limit and single-account restriction built into AppleCare One Individual. Families with enough Apple hardware could save money, although $599.88 per year is still a substantial starting price for device protection.
The existing AppleCare One Individual plan costs $19.99 per month for three products. Each additional device tied to the same Apple Account costs another $5.99 per month.
The single-account restriction generally forced family members onto separate AppleCare One or AppleCare+ plans. Family Sharing didn't change that requirement.

Siri AI is coming
Siri AI has been part of Apple's iOS 27 beta testing process since its June WWDC debut. It's also available in Apple's beta software across its other hardware platforms. It'll be available to the public on all of those platforms before the end of September.
But Siri AI itself will remain a beta feature for the foreseeable future. Apple knows that it has some way to go. Certainly, there's some work to be done before it can meet the lofty expectations Apple left us with following that WWDC unveiling.

Apple may allow sponsored content within Visual Intelligence
Visual Intelligence may eventually support sponsored results from search providers like Google, allowing advertising to appear alongside regular search results. The change appears to be part of Apple's upcoming iOS 27.
Aaron Perris discovered the code within iOS 27. He notes that it would support sponsored images similar to those already appearing on similar services.

Geekbench was updated to version 7 in July 2026, but handily for comparisons, the first figures for the new iPhones were tested on Geekbench 6.7.0, making them comparable to tests on the iPhone 17 Pro. They are always a snapshot of one tester's work, though, and figures can vary slightly between different sets of results.
So for instance with the iPhone 17 Pro, Geekbench's single-core scores ranged between 3523 and 3895. The first test of the iPhone 18 Pro reports a single-core score of 4719.

The new silver iPhone 18 Pro that Apple calls "more refined."
The new iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max weren't minor upgrades. Even though the physical dimensions remained the same, the internals got a significant boost this time around.
In what would previously be called an "s" year, Apple focused a lot on performance, cameras, and battery life. I couldn't test all of that in my limited time, but that cameras had me impressed.

Apple Pencil with USB-C works with iPhone Duo
A rumor in late August suggested Apple tried and failed to include support for Apple Pencil on its upcoming foldable. The issue was apparently with where the Apple Pencil would need to mount for charging interrupting the ease of opening and closing the device.
It would have been disappointing to get such a large display without Apple Pencil support, but Apple did find a way with iPhone Duo. The Apple Pencil with USB-C is compatible with iPhone Duo thanks to its ability to pair and charge over a cable.

Apple chose a Touch ID sensor for iPhone Duo since Face ID would have proven difficult
The iPhone Duo is Apple's first foldable device, which means it can be used opened or closed. Apple couldn't find a way to make Face ID work in both use cases, so it offered Touch ID instead.
The benefit of Touch ID on a foldable is that it can be authenticated no matter if the device is open or closed, or facing forward or backward. However, some users vastly prefer Face ID for the effortless authentication it can perform by simply looking at the device.

Apple's iPhone lineup keeps getting more expensive
The 2026 iPhone lineup is not only more expensive, but Apple's financing options have changed too. Apple managed to keep the base models with 256GB of storage reasonable, the higher storage tiers are sky-high to supplement that.
The iPhone 18 Pro starts out at $1,199 and the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts out at $1,299. Apple's foldable iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for the same 256GB of storage.

The mobile releases cover iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, while macOS 27 Golden Gate shares the same release date. watchOS 27 and visionOS 27 will also arrive September 14 with Siri AI on supported devices.
Apple has released the first release candidates for its new operating systems. Siri AI will retain its separate beta designation after those operating systems leave testing.
The new assistant will initially work only in English. Support for French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish is scheduled to follow in October 2026.

New Health features come to iPhone as well as Apple Watch
The Apple Watch Series 12 unveiling saw Apple focus on its ability to monitor the wearer's heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV,) and more. But it's what Apple intends to do with the data the Apple Watch collects that will make the biggest difference to people's lives.

As it always has, Apple has encouraged developers to use its latest Xcode development tools without quite telling them why things were changing. Consequently, it now says that if developers have worked to the current Xcode 27, their apps will need little work to look good on the iPhone Duo.
Really they won't absolutely need any work, as the existing builds will be displayed full screen on the front, and almost full screen inside. In the first of a short series of videos, Apple shows that apps will be ranged left so that they take up most of the display, but avoid the camera section.

The iPhone 17 just got more expensive

Apple lists both generations of the smaller Pro at 5.91 inches tall, 2.83 inches wide, and 0.34 inch deep. In metric measurements, each phone is 150 mm by 71.9 mm by 8.75 mm.
The same applies to the larger models. Both iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone 18 Pro Max measure 6.43 inches tall, 3.07 inches wide, and 0.34 inch deep, or 163.4 mm by 78 mm by 8.75 mm.

An earlier iOS 27 beta screen
The first round of release candidates are here, giving Apple one more test of its upcoming iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27 Golden Gate, tvOS 27, watchOS 27, and visionOS 27 releases. It may well be the last, aside from any second or third release candidate builds, before the expected release alongside Apple's new hardware.
A release candidate is considered feature-complete, as in it's effectively what Apple intends to deliver as its finished initial public release. While it may fix bugs in future RC versions, it won't be adding new features.

On Wednesday, alongside the long-awaited iPhone Duo and iPhone 18 Pro, the Apple Watch Ultra 4 made its debut. The new model is somewhat of a spec-bump upgrade, offering improved battery life with the same tried-and-true design.
With the Apple Watch Ultra 4, Apple has also increased power efficiency, with a battery life of up to 50 hours, or 84 hours in Low Power mode. Additionally, Apple says that its Apple Watch Ultra 4 features the most accurate heart rate sensing in a wearable.

The foldable market is filled with expensive devices that address an incredibly niche market, but Apple pursued it anyway. Its first foldable is the iPhone Duo, and rumors managed to nail what to expect.
The "Surprise and Shine" Apple Event is still underway and the iPhone Duo has barely been revealed. The squat folding form factor shows a short and wide external display, two rear cameras, and a hinge that opens the device into a larger inner display.

Audio Intelligence uses Sound Recognition to identify relevant information from the wearer's surroundings as events happen. Siri can combine those signals with other available data to summarize the day later.
Sound Recognition can identify events such as sirens, alarms, doorbells, and a crying baby, giving the system potential safety and accessibility uses. A separate Live Rewind feature lets users double-press the Digital Crown to replay the previous 15 seconds of detected audio and view a transcript.
The resulting Siri Recap doesn't include transcripts of overheard conversations, and Apple says the feature doesn't store audio. Sound processing happens continuously before the original audio is discarded.

It's seven years since the last ceramic model, the Apple Watch Series 5, but now Apple has brought back the material and done so in two colors. This the only visible change in the Apple Watch Series 12, but it's a welcome return for the premium scratch-resistant material.
