Resilience has become a buzzword, but what does the term really mean, especially in relation to the climate crisis, and how can it be discussed in the classroom? This was one of the questions a group of 28 teachers from across New York City explored during a two-day professional learning workshop hosted by the National Wildlife Federation for its Resilient Schools Consortium (RiSC) program. The institute took place in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn — an area pummeled by Superstorm Sandy in 2012.  

Equity, environmental racism, and climate justice — key themes in the newly revised RiSC program and curriculum — were prominent topics explored during the workshop. The two-day event began with an activity to gauge peoples’ perceptions about who is most affected by climate change.

While some teachers felt that all people were at equal risk of harm from climate impacts in their community, others remembered the people who drowned in illegal basement apartments after Hurricane Ida one year ago, clear examples of environmental injustices.

Learning About Urban Resilience, Green and Gray Infrastructure, and Climate Justice

On day one, teachers heard from LEED architect and American University professor, Victoria Kiechel, about the effects of climate change on cities and what factors, such as infrastructure, wealth inequality, politics, and regional ecology, affect prospects for equitable urban resilience. For example, Black New Yorkers are more than twice as likely to die from heat as white residents; neighborhoods of color are more vulnerable to heat waves due to a historical lack of investment, and a lack of street trees and green space — both critical for reducing urban heat. 

There is work being done to protect some coastal communities from climate impacts. Brad Howe, landscape architect and design director at SCAPE Studio, shared his firm’s climate adaptive green infrastructure projects including the Living Breakwaters, slated for installation this year, that will break waves, reduce erosion, and provide habitat along a climate vulnerable shoreline in Staten Island.

Journalist Nathan Kensinger spoke about his short film Managed Retreat and shared images and information about resilient infrastructure projects across the city.
After lunch, a panel of Coney Island residents shared their lived experiences post Sandy and ongoing advocacy in their community on the Superstorm’s 10-year anniversary. Impactful conversations were had about the lack of resources and attention given to the Coney Island community pre and post Sandy, despite the storm’s devastation — new boilers are just now being installed in Coney Island’s public houses — and how the community remains highly vulnerable to future storms and climate impacts, despite ongoing development and gentrification there. Panelists discussed controversial projects that were stopped as a result of their engagement; these stories highlighted the power and impact that active, informed and tenacious community members can have in spite of seemingly impossible odds, as well as entrenched environmental racism.

Measuring Sea Level Rise at Coney Island Creek

On the final day of the workshop, teachers visited Coney Island Creek — the last remaining creek in Brooklyn whose waters flooded homes during Sandy — for a resilience tour led by Dr. Brett Branco, Director of the Science and Resilience Institute at Jamaica Bay. Using an Adopt-a-Shoreline field guide designed for the RiSC program, teachers learned about tides, the impacts of erosion, and looked for green and gray infrastructure features: dunes, rip rap, and remnants of an old sea wall. They also learned about the important role that American beach grass plays in stabilizing dunes by creating a natural buffer against storm surge and erosion.

Teachers measured sea level rise in 2070 under various emissions scenarios. The “business as usual,” scenario, marked with a red flag, showed a 3.25 feet sea level rise — a level that would flood the adjacent street and community. This was an impactful visualization of flood predictions using the latest data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s 2022 Sea Level Rise Technical Report

Back in the classroom, teachers put their newfound knowledge to work redesigning the Coney Island coastline using a drag and drop activity from the RiSC curriculum that includes green and gray infrastructure features. 

They created sea level rise marker designs, guided by artist Carolyn Hall, who shared examples of ways that artists around the world are creatively visualizing sea level rise data: through paint, decals, QR codes, built structures, light beams, and even dance performances in the ocean.

Creating a Community of Practice for Climate and Resilience Education

Finally, teachers were asked to write ‘Postcards From the Future’ to themselves and/or their relatives. Some postcards were optimistic and others less so. The mental and physical health impacts associated with the climate crisis are real, for adults and students alike. The RiSC program strives to provide educational programming that is both empowering and hopeful and the curriculum offers spaces for teachers and students to discuss their climate anxiety.

When asked for final reflections, two teachers were moved to tears, expressing gratitude that they had found a community of practice around climate education; some forged connections with community residents. A majority of teachers pledged to bring what they had learned back to their classrooms. Some, like Emmy Lee from the Urban Assembly School of Emergency Management, charted out how to integrate climate change content across all of her school’s content areas.

In December 2017, Diane Corrigan – a wildlife enthusiast and early childhood science teacher at PS 179 in Brooklyn – came upon an article about how a family of beavers were “wreaking havoc” in the Staten Island neighborhood of Richmond. The beavers, allegedly felled 600 trees in the woods around Richmond Creek to build their lodge; they also built a dam in the Creek, which caused water levels to rise and periodically flood streets adjacent to peoples’ homes.

Beaver dams and lodges are protected under the law and it’s illegal to disturb them. So when concerned residents called the city to complain about the beavers, Department of Environmental Protection officials came out during the day and cleared a two-foot hole in the dam. The beavers – known for being skilled engineers – repaired the hole overnight. At the time of this writing, the fate of the Staten Island beavers is unknown.

This human-wildlife conflict with New York State’s official animal piqued Corrigan’s interest. She decided to use it as a teachable moment with her first graders, not only to help students learn about beavers and the many wild animals we share our city with, but to explore an important question: Can wildlife and humans co-exist in densely populated urban areas like NYC? These are critical issues that conservationists are increasingly grappling with.

After watching the video about the Staten Island beavers, Corrigan’s students became concerned about their safety: what would happen if the humans didn’t want them there? Would the beavers have to look for a new place to live? Where would they go if they had to move? Could humans find a way to let them stay in Richmond Creek?

Beaver pond levelers were successfully used in two beaver ponds in Utah to prevent flooding of a Walmart parking lot without disturbing the beavers – a win for wildlife and humans. Could this be tried in Staten Island? These are the kinds of questions that PS 179 Principal, Bernel Connelly, wants Corrigan’s students to explore in the classroom.

“Ultimately, we want to raise generations of children that understand and respect wild animals,” says Corrigan. “But a lot of my students don’t have interactions with animals, so studying them is one way they get to relate to them,” she says. Corrigan happens to be a fan of beavers and has been teaching her students about them for years. This year, she read her first graders books about beavers, used PBS Learning Media resources and a Wild Kratt episode that showcases the elaborate architecture of beaver lodges.

In December 2017, Corrigan gave her students an assignment: If you were a beaver and had to build your home, what would your lodge and dam look like? Corrigan left the assignment open-ended and the results were extraordinary. “The kids really enjoyed the assignment and the parents did too,” says Corrigan.

“People ask me why I teach my first graders about beavers every year. They’re cool and are a lot like humans,” she says. They’re mammals with a good sense of hearing, smell, and touch. They use their hand-like front paws to carry things, spread mud on their lodges, and eat food just like we do. They have been seen rolling up lily pads and eating them like burritos. “On their hind legs beavers can be as tall (4 feet) and weigh as much (70 pounds) as a first grader,” says Corrigan. And although many people consider them a nuisance, they’re actually a keystone species that provides many ecological benefits. Beaver ponds, for example, improve water quality, create habitat for many other species, reduce erosion, and recharge groundwater reserves.

Beavers were abundant in NYC, or New Amsterdam, in the 1600s before European settlers almost wiped them out in the early 1800s as a result of trapping, fur trading, and deforestation. Now encroaching development and human intolerance is making it hard for them to find places to live in NYC.

What would happen if beavers disappeared from NYC? A July 2017 report in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences offered a devastating statistic: 50% of the individual animals we once shared this Earth with have already disappeared.

So what can we do? The National Wildlife Federation’s California Regional Center has launched a campaign #SaveLACougars, to build the world’s largest wildlife crossing, over the busiest highway in the U.S., to provide safe passage and habitat connectivity for mountain lions and other animals in the highly urbanized landscape near Los Angeles.  In NYC, NWF is partnering with teachers like Corrigan to help educate thousands of students about how to protect and preserve pollinators and other wildlife, restore their habitat, and make spaces for them where we live.

In the book Water: A Natural History (1996), Alice Outwater writes that in Native American legends, the beaver helped the Great Spirit create the Earth, make the seas, and fill both with animals and people. We must have reverence for the beavers, and all wild animals, once more, in Staten Island and beyond.

Pollinators in New York City, NY and across the country are buzzing with glee thanks to several huge National Wildlife Federation victories last week.

Since 2014, NWF has partnered with the National Park Service on Growing a Wild NYC, a pollinator recovery program that engages NYC public school students in restoring native pollinator habitat in parks and local schoolyards. The program has served 2,000 students and close to three-dozen teachers from 17 schools in Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan. Participating schools have created pollinator gardens at their schools and planted at several sites in Gateway National Recreation Area and in Battery Park in Manhattan.

Last week, we took that momentum to a new level – 1,454 feet up in the sky, to be exact! On Thursday, June 22nd, we lit the iconic Empire State Building yellow and black (like a bee!) to celebrate National Pollinator Week. Celebrity guest and beekeeper Daymond John, of Shark Tank fame, joined NWF and NPS staff and teachers and students from PS 197 to shine a light on pollinators’ dramatic decline and the need to restore their habitat, especially in urban areas.

The festivities at the Empire State Building were just the beginning of our pollinator victories in the Big Apple last week. We’re also thrilled to announce that Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams signed NWF’s Mayor’s Monarch Pledge, making Brooklyn –with 2.6 million residents – the largest city in the U.S. to take this important step for monarch butterflies and all pollinators.

Adams announced his pledge at Green Flag Eco-School PS 29, with Principal Rebecca Fagin and teacher Tina Aprea-Reres and her second graders. Tina – herself a passionate gardener – has participated in the Growing a Wild NYC program since its inception and has established a magnificent pollinator garden at PS 29 which made quite an impression on BP Adams, leading him to exclaim that he wanted every Brooklyn school to have a garden like Tina’s! We’re on board with that!

That night we celebrated with dozens of partners, funders, and NWF members on a rooftop with incredible views of the Empire State Building. As the Empire State Building lit up at sunset, cheers erupted all around. Our friends from S’ip by S’well donated a special gift for guests: bee-patterned bottles that were perfectly suited for the event.

We were honored to have Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer stop by the Monarch Bar to join in the festivities that evening. The following day, June 23, BP Brewer signed the Mayor’s Monarch Pledge, making Manhattan the third largest Pledge in the country, after Houston’s 2.2 million people, at 1.6 million people.

On June, 22, 2017,  we highlighted the need to help bees and other pollinators when National Wildlife Federation leadership joined Shark Tank host Daymond John at the Empire State Building to light the iconic tower in yellow and black stripes for National Pollinator Week and National Wildlife Federation’s Growing a Wild NYC pollinator program.

National Pollinator Week was founded 10 years ago by the Pollinator Partnership as an annual recognition of the important role that pollinators play in our ecosystems. In addition to the Empire State Building lighting, and to advance awareness across North America, Pollinator Partnership of Canada coordinated with the CN Tower in Toronto, Ontario to be lit in similar colors on June, 22, 2017, and for a Niagara Falls pollinator color display to close out the pollinator week festivities on Monday June 26.

Pollinators are animals that visit flowering plants to feed on nectar, and in the process move pollen from one blossom to another pollinating the plant. This act of pollination fertilizes plants, allowing them to form seeds and reproduce, as well as to produce the berries, fruits and nuts that feed both wildlife and people. 1 out of 3 of the foods we eat, such as honey, apples, bananas, chocolate, and almonds often contain essential nutrients and antioxidants good for our health and depend on pollinators.  Pollinators, like bees, butterflies, wasps, beetles, and hummingbirds are critically important for healthy ecosystems.

Yet, pollinator populations have declined across the country, threatening these food supplies. Many reasons contribute to their recent decline, however we are seeing improvements in their populations in areas where people are planting nectar and pollen sources provided by flowering plants and trees.

The National Wildlife Federation’s Growing a Wild NYC program and The National Pollinator Garden Network are counting on friends of wildlife to take action – a million pollinator gardens by 2018!   Join the NWF in supporting the Million Pollinator Garden Challenge by planting pollinator-friendly native plants, avoiding the use of pesticides in your yard and spreading the word to friends and neighbors.

NWF co-launched the National Pollinator Garden Network and launched the Million Pollinator Garden Challenge, a nonpartisan effort to inspire people and organizations to create more pollinator habitats. We are halfway there, approximately 500,000 participants of 50 national partners’ organizations have planted or enhanced pollinator gardens.

Since 2016, NWF has contributed the following efforts to support the Million Pollinator Garden Challenge campaign:  Through the Garden for Wildlife program approximately 19,000 new habitats supporting pollinators (includes 822 schools) and 130,000 Butterfly Hero pledges to plant for monarchs and pollinators. Over 300 municipal leaders have taken the Mayor’s Monarch Pledge committing on actions to benefit monarchs and pollinators ranging from installing a new demonstration garden at city hall to removing milkweed from a city’s list of noxious plants.

How You Can Help

1. Plant native plants for pollinators. You can find the right plants for your area by asking a local nursery or nature center.
2. Register your garden at millionpollinatorgardens.org. You can also add a photo of your garden to the SHARE map to inspire others.
3. Encourage others to join. Use #PolliNation on social media to share your habitat planting and help spread the word.

Certify your garden, and bring home the bees!

Another easy way to join the Million Pollinator Garden Challenge is by certifying your yard with the National Wildlife Federation. NWF Certified Wildlife Habitats are counted towards the million gardens goal and are guaranteed wildlife-friendly habitats. These habitats go above and beyond to provide food, water, cover, and places to raise young for a variety of wildlife in your area. During the month of June there is an added bonus! When you Certify your pollinator garden habitat, you’ll also be entered to win one of TWO summer bee cabins to help boost the pollination in your garden! If you cannot plant at home there are other ways you can still show your support.  Join the NWF, the Million Pollinator Garden Challenge, and the National Pollinator Garden Network effort to mobilize communities, organizations, businesses, and individuals throughout North America. We can work towards fully engaging these organizations in the pollinator health movement by planting, educating and recruiting others.  Here are some examples:

Visit a public garden and learn more about pollinators.  Public gardens and zoos are planting “showcase” pollinator gardens and educate millions of their visitors on plant conservation and pollinator protection.

Plant with others. Join NWF’s Community Wildlife Habitat teams planting across communities. National Garden Clubs, Inc. estimates an additional 100,000 gardens have been planted or enhanced since the campaign has commenced. Others, like Monarch Watch contribute thousands of pollinator garden habitats to be counted in the challenge annually. Voluntary membership groups, such as the Daughters of the American Revolution, and Scout groups are planting hundreds of gardens annually across private and public spaces.

Educate and share with others online. At Garden,org, The National Gardening Association website reported that in the last 3 years over 58,000 photos of pollinator-friendly plants have been uploaded to their member-driven database of plants. Check out NWF’s Facebook page and Twitter and promote pollinator gardening using the hashtags #Garden4wildlife and #PolliNATION for the Million Pollinator Garden Challenge. Or if your out and bout, share plants that you have spotted with your mobile device by downloading the mobile app GrowIt!

Enjoy the plants and festivals at local garden centers. Thousands of garden centers are supplying pollinator-beneficial plants to consumers along with regional advice on plant selection and care. Garden centers have self-reported increases in sales and customer requests for pollinator friendly plants nationwide over the last 2 years. In St. Louis, Missouri Greenscapes Garden Center reported a 30% increase annually in pollinator perennial sales over the past 3 years. Garden centers have also reported increases in the highly attended pollinator workshops and festivals they host seasonally.

June is still ideal planting weather for much of the U.S. and visiting pollinator gardens, with an opportunity to draw national attention to the need for critical pollinator habitat.

Every week, millions of people tune in to watch the Emmy-award-winning reality show Shark Tank, in which self-made millionaire and billionaire tycoons – Sharks – give aspiring entrepreneurs the chance to pitch business and product ideas, and secure investment deals that could make them as successful as the Sharks themselves.

One of those Sharks – fashion industry mogul Daymond John – grew up in Hollis, Queens. Daymond attended the public Bayside High School, worked his way through school, and launched his clothing company, FUBU, out of his mother’s home. FUBU, now a $6 billion business, is headquartered in the iconic Empire State Building in Manhattan.

In an April 2015 episode of Shark Tank, Daymond learned about the dangerous global decline of bees from beekeeper Matt Reed, who was seeking investment in his company. Daymond not only determined to help Reed develop his business but went ahead and set up hives of his own. Daymond installed more than 30 hives on his property in Dutchess County, NY – an area upstate known for its pick-your-own apple and berry orchards – both crops that rely heavily on insect pollination. Daymond now has his own crew of over a million honeybees and is committed to helping pollinators. By lighting the Empire State Building with Daymond on June 22nd, during National Pollinator Week 2017, we hope to spread the news that pollinators need our help and we need pollinators. We’re so grateful to have Daymond’s help in sharing this important message in NYC and across the country.

Pollinators Are Vital to New York‘s Environment and Economy

New York State is home to 35,500 farms and 7 million acres of agricultural production that depend on insect pollination. In addition to managed bee colonies, New York State has 450 wild bee species including the squash bee, eastern bumblebee, and leaf cutter bee that are important crop pollinators. Surveys have found that over 100 species of wild bees pollinate and help produce New York’s apples, squash, pumpkins, strawberries, cherries and peaches.

Pollinators Are in Trouble in New York State and Globally

The iconic monarch butterfly migrates through New York City from June through October as part of its 3,000 mile journey from Canada to Mexico, though its numbers have declined by 90% in the last 20 years; and, in 2017, the North American rusty patched bumble bee made it onto the Endangered Species List. Overuse of pesticides, disease, habitat loss and fragmentation, and climate change– which is disrupting flowering cycles and making essential food sources less reliable – have all been identified as culprits in global pollinator declines. Over the past several years, New York State has lost over 50% of its managed bee colonies. Numbers of wild pollinators have declined as well and have especially been impacted by loss of habitat.

NYC Public School Students in NWF Eco-Schools Are Restoring Pollinator Habitat

Since 2014, NWF’s Growing a Wild NYC program has educated 2,000 NYC public school students – from Kindergarten to High School – about the importance of pollinators and the causes of their decline. The program is a partnership with the National Park Service/Gateway National Recreation Area, The NYC Department of Education, The Battery Conservancy, The Greenbelt Native Plant Center, Groundwork Hudson Valley, Green Earth Urban Gardens, and others.

Through a year-long progression of nature-based classroom and field lessons, Growing a Wild NYC moves students from education to action by enlisting their help in restoring native pollinator habitat in local parks and schoolyard gardens. To date, students and their teachers have planted thousands of native flowering plants at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in Queens, Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn, Battery Park in Manhattan, and in their schoolyards. NWF would like every school to have a pollinator garden and see every NYC student get outside to plant for pollinators: in parks and community gardens, tree pits, window boxes, planters, and raised beds.

National Pollinator Week (June 19-25, 2017) presents a great opportunity to educate millions of Americans about the plight of our pollinators and get them to take action. When NWF’s NYC staff was looking for creative ways to get the word out, we looked upward.

Soaring 1,454 feet above Midtown Manhattan (from base to antenna), the Empire State Building is one of the world’s most famous and beloved buildings. Empire State Realty Trust, Inc., which owns the Empire State Building, allows organizations to promote their cause-oriented messaging through the lighting of the iconic building – a building which hosts the clothing company of the most famous beekeeping Shark! What better way to get the word out? We reached out to Daymond John and he agreed to flick the switch for pollinators at a ceremonial Lighting Event on June 22nd that will turn the Empire State Building yellow and black at 8:31pm that evening.

The lighting of the Empire State Building for pollinators is more than just a symbolic act; it’s a way to shine a bright light on the efforts of individuals like Daymond John, and on programs like NWF’s Growing a Wild NYC that are at the forefront of helping pollinators thrive in urban landscapes. Indeed, international research scientists say that cities – with their diverse parks, green roofs, community plots, and small urban gardens – can play a major role in helping insect pollinators survive. City dwellers can pledge to help pollinators in a variety of ways.

March 17–23 is National Wildlife Week, and this year’s theme is water, specifically people and wildlife’s shared need for clean water. In keeping with this year’s theme, Junior Scientists and Junior Rangers at PS57, a Green Flag Eco-School in Staten Island New York, presented results from a 14-month EPA-funded comparative water quality study. Samples were collected from several water bodies: Eibs Pond, a wetland pond across the street from the school; Blue Heron Park Pond, a local pond about 8.5 miles from the school; three ponds at a Vermont dairy farm; and streams, ponds and lakes in the Catskill watershed, which provides New York City’s 8.5 million residents their drinking water.

Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) documents from 2002 revealed that Eibs Pond’s water quality had been
 impacted by past illegal dumping, plant overgrowth and sediment erosion. PS 57 students set about sampling and charting water quality and macroinvertebrate data of Eibs Pond monthly, studying Ph, nitrite, nitrate and ammonia levels. Fourteen teachers in grades 3–5, who received professional development for the project from seasoned science teacher Pat Lockhart, used the “Bucket of Bugs” lesson from the Catskills: A Sense of Place curriculum.  The lesson uses paper models of insects to teach students about macroinverebrates.

To collect actual macroinvertebrate samples from Eibs Pond, students stuffed mesh bags with leaves.  The mesh bags were kept in Eibs Pond; between September 2012 and December 2013, 14 different classes came to collect them each month. Lockhart, classroom teachers and Park Rangers helped students during each visit to remove the leaf pack mesh bags using buckets and nets.

Macroinvertebrates were then identified, separated and placed onto identification charts.  Students worked in small groups, with teachers and rangers.  Monthly results were charted on data forms and compared by classes.

Student data were analyzed to determine water quality health based on the number and kinds of macroinvertebrates found in samples.  Based on results, which revealed an overabundance of aquatic worms, the students confirmed the DEC’s findings that that Eibs Pond water was still slightly impacted by pollution.

Next, students used four different water quality tests to determine pond water health.  Students tested water samples’ Ph, nitrite, nitrate and ammonia levels and recorded their results.

Rangers also worked with PS 57 teachers and students at nearby Blue Heron Park as part of the comparative water quality study.  Macroinvertebrate specimens were collected and identified and data were charted. Findings were enlarged using a microscope and projector and images of specimens were projected onto a screen.

In October 2013, while on a one-week trip to Spring Brook Farm, a sustainable dairy farm in Reading, Vermont with the Farms for City Kids program, PS 57 students tested the quality of the water in three ponds there. They found that water quality of the ponds was slightly impacted as a result of manure fertilizers used in adjacent fields.

At the end of their comparative water sampling project, PS 57 Junior Rangers developed and voted on seven student and community proposals to improve both land use and water quality, and environmental education programming in Eibs Pond Park.  Some of these proposals include wetland restoration, erosion control, removal of invasive species and planting of natives, as well as the creation of a nature center and an accessible outdoor classroom. Until proposals are vetted, PS 57 students and Friends of Eibs Pond—a local community group—will continue to conduct science programs, plantings, and community restoration projects at Eibs Pond together.

According to a landmark 2012 report, “Rooftop Revolution,” by the Manhattan Borough President’s office, there are 2.7 million square feet of usable roof space on NYC’s public schools. These rooftops represent a vast, untapped opportunity to generate renewable electricity from solar panels.  Using public school rooftops alone, and using the City University of New York’s N.Y.C. Solar Map, the report estimated that new solar installations on school rooftops could generate 169.46 megawatts of clean, renewable energy, eliminate 76,696 tons of carbon from the air each year — the equivalent of planting more than 400,000 trees – and increase NYC’s solar energy capacity by 2,500%.

Several NYC Eco-Schools are already leading the rooftop revolution.  In late 2011, MS442 – The Carroll Gardens School for Innovation – in Brooklyn installed about 4,200 square feet of  solar photovoltaic (PV) panels on its rooftops.  The system produces about 47.6 kilowatts (kW) or 152 kilowatt hours (kwh) of electricity per day.  For 365 days per year, this corresponds to 55,597 kWh per year.  Assuming a current electricity rate for NYC DOE of about $0.18/kWh, and according to Sunny Portal, MS442’s PV system offsets over $10,000 in electricity costs per year and has so far prevented the release of over 148,000 pounds of CO2 into the atmosphere.

The Urban Assembly School for Green Careers at the Brandeis campus on the Upper West Side of Manhattan has an equally impressive 47 kw solar PV installation, installed in early 2012, that generates an average of 48,000 kwh of electricity per year, has saved close to $9,000 in electricity costs per year, and has prevented the release of over 140,000 pounds of CO2 into the atmosphere.

At Regis High School in Manhattan, a 22 kw solar panel array on the school’s 22,000 square foot green roof, installed in June 2007, generates 3,730 kwh of electricity per year and provides 5% of the school’s electricity. The panels have thus far prevented the release of 40,528 pounds of carbon dioxide and generated enough energy to power 650 homes for one day. These stats are monitored through the school’s website.  In 2012, Regis also replaced all of its lights with LED (light-emitting diode) fixtures, reducing electric use by more than half (and costs as well).  Faculty and students have learned about vampire loads and have stepped up recycling efforts throughout the facility.

At PS41 in Manhattan, a three-panel solar array lives on the school’s 15,000 square foot green roof.  PS41’s panels are not grid connected but are hooked up to a battery and used for educational purposes.  The battery is housed in a box, so the students can view it. An outlet mounted on the outside of the box allows for easy plug-in demonstrations of solar/wind power.  Science teachers Vicki Sando and Joaquin Rodriguez integrate the panels into classroom activities with the school’s Urban Eco-Club. Students build small solar cars and wind turbine units to understand the concepts behind renewable energy. They test them, and Sando and Rodriguez discuss how renewable energy works on a larger scale, such as on wind farms and large solar installations.

Thanks to a partnership with Divvy Solar, a solar crowd-funding startup, Bronx Design and Construction Academy’s solar research project – designed to prove that green roofs improve the efficiency of solar panels – was fully funded.  The panels should be installed in the Spring of 2014.

PS/IS 276, The Battery Park City School is Manhattan’s first green school building.  The vertical 8-story building – a showcase for sustainable design and energy efficiency – was conceived by John Woelfling, a LEED AP and principal at Dattner Architects. The school features three solar PV installations, for a total of 50kw. The first is on the school’s entry canopy: a handful of panels with transparent glazing, spaced out on a platform.

The second array, is on the roof and part of an outdoor classroom where the children grow tomatoes, basil, radishes and monitor the amount of energy generated by the solar panels in a weather station.  The third array is the largest and in the same general area.  Woelfling is currently working on three large solar school projects for the NYC Department of Education, in collaboration with the School Construction Authority. The projects are due to be completed by mid-2014.

The Town School’s 2008 graduating class raised $10,000 to purchase 28 solar PV modules; these were installed in 2009 and provide 6.048kw of power for the school – enough to power both the upper and lower science classrooms, including lights and computers.  In 2012, Town also installed a wind turbine – the first at a New York City school.

In December of 2011, a 4.84 kW solar-electric system was installed over the rooftop playground at Lycée Français de New York. The project, which includes a weather monitoring station, was funded through a combination of public and private donations.

160X150_coolschool_logo[1]Schools have a range of options to choose from, to teach their students about renewable energy. NWF’s Cool School Challenge  engages schools in practical strategies to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gas emissions school-wide.  Students build STEM skills as they learn to conduct energy audits, calculate their impact, and create an action plan to shrink their carbon footprint. An interactive carbon calculator helps to evaluate progress, graph results and cost-savings.  Schools doing the Cool School Challenge can address Eco-Schools USA’s Energy and Climate Change Pathways and apply for awards through the program. Solar One’s Green Design Lab curriculum engages students in hands-on activities, uses the school building as a model for exploring topics of sustainability, and gives students the knowledge and tools to solve real-world problems. The Alliance for Climate Education offers exciting in-school assemblies that aim to inspire students to take action on climate change.  The Green Schools Alliance’s (GSA’s) Green Cup Challenge engages schools in an annual energy conservation competition.  GSA, in partnership with the Environmental Protection Agency, has also launched the Green Schools Renewable Energy Purchasing Consortium.  The purpose of the Consortium is to accelerate the adoption of renewable energy by K-12 schools by aggregating demand and reducing administrative burdens.  The Natural Resources Defense Council recently launched a “Solar Schools” initiative, aimed at establishing pilot solar school projects across the U.S. to build support for solar schools more generally.

I have been to New York City a handful of times during my life, and each time, I see The City That Never Sleeps in a different light.

Recently, I traveled there to attend the opening of PS41 Greenwich Village School’s green roof. The historic area of Greenwich Village is an area that I have visited before, but had never experienced through this particular lens: I saw kids living in a pavement world. I saw parents walking their kids to school every morning down 7th Ave. with taxis rushing by. I saw kids eating their breakfast while their moms and dads hustled them across busy streets.

None of this is really a surprise—I know that kids grow up in big cities—but what I didn’t really stop to ever think about, was, well…the obvious: what it really means for kids to grow up in big cities. 

I do not have kids of my own, but I do have a one-year-old niece, and seeing New York this way really made me think about how this was a normal day for these kids. I couldn’t imagine growing up in the city, and all I kept asking myself as I stood by and watched the morning commute was, “Where do these kids play? Where do they venture out for that ‘green escape’ for the afternoon?”

At PS41, I found my answer: There’s no room on the ground? No problem! We’ll put it on the roof.

Green roofs are not a new thing, but what PS41 has accomplished is nothing short of remarkable. They have given students (and teachers and parents, for that matter), an environmentally-friendly place to live and learn—and inspire change.

PS41 is packed between shops, parking garages and sky scrapers, but the kids that I saw on that roof had escaped from the pavement and hustle of the New York I had always known. I too, found myself not wanting to leave the roof.

This trip to NYC and PS41 taught me that it is possible to create a green learning environment, so kids can have access to the fun and enjoyment of the natural world. I can’t wait to see which school will be next at creating a “green escape” for their students!
