WELCOME TO DECEMBER PROJECT!

this explanation/intro will be posted before each day’s short story. scroll down to get to the story-review.

this is the SEVENTH year of me doing a short story advent calendar as my december project. for those of you new to me or this endeavor, here’s the skinny: every day in december, i will be reading a short story that is 1) available free somewhere on internet, and 2) listed on goodreads as its own discrete entity. there will be links provided for those of you who like to read (or listen to) short stories for free, and also for those of you who have wildly overestimated how many books you can read in a year and are freaking out about not meeting your annual reading-challenge goals. i have been gathering links all year when tasty little tales have popped into my feed, but i will also accept additional suggestions, as long as they meet my aforementioned 1), 2) standards.

GR has deleted the pages for several of the stories i’ve read in previous years without warning, leaving me with a bunch of missing reviews and broken links, which makes me feel shitty. i have tried to restore the ones i could, but my to-do list is already a ball of nightmares, so that’s still a work-in-progress. however, because i don’t have a lot of time to waste, and because my brain has felt scraped clean ever since my bout with covid, i’m not going to bother writing much in the way of reviews for these, in case GR decides to scrap ’em again.

i am doing my best.
merry merry.

DECEMBER 29

this is an example of a story that is “good” without being “enjoyable.” it was certainly effective at what it was doing, but i never want to read it – nor even ever think about it – again. i am angry that these images are gonna stay with me, but the fact that i’m so sure they will means the story and the author did the job right, so way to go, man. i hate it deeply.

man, i loved this. HOWEVER, although the introduction by justin taylor – who is the recommender of THIS story in electric literature’s ‘recommended reading’ project – claims that this story is NOT an excerpt from novic’s novel Girl at War, a lot of it sounded very familiar, so i think he is wrong in this assertion, although correct in loving the story. Girl at War hadn’t yet been published when he made this claim, so he can be forgiven, but it is most certainly published now, so you can read this story, or read the full novel, or both, but NOT none of the above. that is simply not an option, sorry.

oh, nothing much to see here, just lauren groff being the queen of the short story AGAIN, showing everyone how it’s done. the new yorker stories tend to be longer than some of the other publications’ offerings, but in some cases (i/e. this one right here) you are grateful to have so much to read and so much to admire. whatta star.

i’ll never stop trying to see what people love about murakami, but for the record – this was the SECOND short story i read today, only for whatever reason, the first one i read is a ghost haunting goodreads, where the powers-that-be have permitted a record of its existence to continue to appear on the site, but no longer allow anyone new to say they have read it nor to review it and they have removed the author’s name (ADAM LEVIN, YOU MONSTERS) from the record so it’s like some half-furnished diorama at a natural history museum AND THE WORST THING IS that i LOVED the story, and even though i seem to be the only person on here who did, i wanted to share MY TWO CENTS about it, as diminished as my critical currency has become of late, and i was not able to share this TWO CENTS and instead had to read a SECOND story to make up for it, by an author who has historically unwowed me, which is two insults, two injuries, and it has been too long and enervating a day to deal with any more math.

halfway through this story, i realized it had been collected in In the Penny Arcade, so i had already read it, oops. but now YOU can read it – a story collection of brief image-pieces that aimee bender loved like crazy and i thought was just fine. me, i prefer different millhausers but i will pretend aimee bender wrapped this up for me for christmas and simply respond with a polite smile and sincere gratitude for the thought.

DECEMBER 24

merry christmas eve-afternoon, unintentionally the perfect time to (finally) read this christmas classic, whose third paragraph occurs on a just-like-today, and involves unspeakable crimes against cats. or the intent thereof:

It was on the afternoon of the Christmas Eve, and I was in Mrs. Prothero’s garden, waiting for cats, with her son Jim. It was snowing. It was always snowing at Christmas. December, in my memory, is white as Lapland, though there were no reindeers. But there were cats. Patient, cold and callous, our hands wrapped in socks, we waited to snowball the cats. Sleek and long as jaguars and horrible-whiskered, spitting and snarling, they would slink and sidle over the white back-garden walls, and the lynx-eyed hunters, Jim and I, fur-capped and moccasined trappers from Hudson Bay, off Mumbles Road, would hurl our deadly snowballs at the green of their eyes. The wise cats never appeared.

cats are too smart to get snowballed. unlike the heroine of Snowballin’: I Fucked Frosty, a veryfine book i wrote once upon a time.

special thanks to murderbot who, although not part of this story, nonetheless paved the way for me to enjoy a story like this – whose AI/outer spacey SF themes i would formerly have avoided at all costs. now, i’ve come around, you see, and this one’s a real goody.

this project has become invaluable if for no other reason than because it has forced me to read authors i have been meaning to read for years – in this case for many MANY years, as people in my life line up, one after another, to tell me how much i will love her. and they were all correct – this story is freaking excellent. holy shit, how is it already the 22nd? is this long covid working its tricks on me, or is time flying for everyone?

i loved this author’s Sharks in the Time of Saviors, so i was thrilled to discover that he had a little freebie story perfect for my short story advent calendar. even MORE meant-to-be is that it features VOLCANOES, which is a subject i am currently researching in the employ of a Very Famous Writer who has accepted the challenge of completing an unfinished manuscript for the posthumous release of a novel by Another Very Famous Writer which is about VOLCANOES. alas, it is not the sequel to Sharcano, which i fear will NEVER be released.

every year i read a stephen king story during the advent calendar, and every year i enjoy the story and every year i make a mental note to see what stephen king’s been up to since i last checked in with him (as a reader, not as a pal), and i never do. so at least i’m as consistent in this pattern as stephen king is consistent at cranking out pointy-sweet little stories for me to enjoy once a year. maybe this year…pals?
