Slavic & East European Materials Assistant

Title: Slavic & East European Materials Assistant
Division / Dept.: Library R & L - Teaching and Research Support - Humanities Students
Reports to: Slavic & East European Studies Librarian
Work Schedule: 10-15 hours per week

Student positions at the University of Chicago Library are available only to University of Chicago students.

General Summary

This position will report to the Slavic & East European Studies Librarian and support the library’s efforts to build and maintain its collections of materials from and about the people and regions of Russia, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia. The position will specifically work to support materials acquisition and collection maintenance decisions by the librarian, the processing of newspaper and backlog materials, the processing and updating of the Archive of Czechs & Slovaks Abroad (ACASA), and the creation and maintenance of educational materials.

Responsibilities

Tasks associated with this position will vary according to needs at the time of work. They may include:

Using provided criteria to read and analyze lists of books for further review by the librarian
Identifying materials for purchase consideration through reviews, lists, bibliographies, and other information
Performing guided processing and maintenance work in the Archive of Czechs and Slovaks Abroad including updating navigational aids and reorganizing materials
Researching owned materials requiring a decision and potential purchases with provided criteria
Adjusting and updating reference guides and working with the librarian to create educational content relevant to support researchers
Analyzing data on collections and funding using provided tools and questions to inform librarian decision-making
Working with the librarian to identify places in workflows that could be better optimized using automation and the assistant’s skillset

Required Qualifications

Graduate Student at the University of Chicago
Familiarity with the Microsoft Office suite and Google Docs
Reading knowledge of at least one language of the region with a preference for Polish, Czech, or Russian
Ability to read the Cyrillic alphabet
Demonstrated ability to communicate verbally and through e-mail about the needs, limitations, and progress of work
Demonstrated ability to quickly learn new procedures and tools

Preferred Qualifications

Reading knowledge of Polish or Czech, in addition to a demonstrated understanding of Slavic language structure
Experience working with vernacular materials in Slavic & East European languages through library, bookselling, or research experience
A demonstrated understanding of the history of and current events in Russia, Eastern Europe, or Central Asia
Intermediate to an advanced facility with Excel or Google Sheets

Uzbek is available at Elementary, Intermediate, and Advanced levels at the University of Chicago, since the year 2000. Students in Elementary Uzbek can expect to learn Modern Standard Uzbek in both the Cyrillic and the Latin Script versions, and become conversant within the year. The class teaches conversational skills, basic grammar, and situational vocabulary, while also gradually introducing excerpts from Uzbek literature & film. The instructor, Kagan Arik, is a Turkic languages specialist, language pedagogue, and an anthropologist of Central Asia and Turkic-speaking cultures, who has been at the University of Chicago since 2000. He teaches Turkish language and literature, Uzbek, Kazakh, Old Turkic, and courses on the anthropology, folklore and ethnomusicology of Central Asia.

Uzbek is the second most-widely spoken Turkic language after Turkish, with close to 30 million speakers. It is the official language of the Republic of Uzbekistan, and is also spoken by minority populations in the neighbouring Kazakh and Kirghiz republics, and by 3 million people in northern Afghanistan. It is mutually intelligible with the very closely-related Uyghur language, spoken in the neighbouring Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous region of the PRC. Knowledge of Uzbek also allows quick access to other Turkic languages such as Kazakh, Kirghiz, or Tatar. It is also areally (but not genetically) related to the Iranian Tajik language, spoken in Tajikistan and also in parts of Uzbekistan itself. It is currently written in the Latin alphabet, though most literature from the Soviet period uses a modified Cyrillic alphabet. Uzbek may be one of the easier Turkic languages to master, as it dispenses with many of the complex rules of vowel harmony that we encounter in other Turkic languages. It descends directly from the Chagatai Turkic literary language of Central Asia, which was used after the 13th century, though it is also connected to older forms of Turkic, written for the past two millennia in Central Asia. Uzbek, like other Turkic languages, is SOV, agglutinative, genderless, and makes uses of noun cases, verb aspect, and participle clauses instead of relative clauses.

The University of Chicago offers three years of Bosnian/Croatian/Montenegrin/Serbian language study, enabling students with no prior experience to reach advanced proficiency before graduation. Courses emphasize communicative competence and intercultural literacy through sustained engagement with contemporary spoken and written language, media, and cultural materials.

Students with prior experience—as heritage speakers, formal learners, or through self-study—are encouraged to take the online placement test in order to enroll at the appropriate level. Instruction draws on current approaches to Heritage Language Learning and supports students in developing their skills efficiently and confidently.

In addition to language study, students may enroll in interdisciplinary content courses taught in English (no knowledge of South Slavic languages required), as well as in translation courses and a range of academic and cultural events.

Studying Russia at The University of Chicago

The University of Chicago has been at the forefront of research on Russia since the first years of the twentieth century, when William Rainey Harper, the first president of the university, sent his son Samuel to Europe to train as one of America’s first Russia experts. Today, the university boasts more than a dozen specialists on Russia and the Soviet Union who work in fields ranging from literature and language to history and economics. We offer instruction in the Russian language for total beginners to fluent speakers and everyone in between. The popular Russia and Eurasia civilization core, which is also available as a study abroad class at our Paris Center, offers a gateway for undergraduate study.
