Webinar on APC 2019 Report: Highlighting Successful Atlantic Indigenous Businesses

Indigenous businesses in Atlantic Canada are making a sizeable contribution to the regional economy and are expanding rapidly, but financial obstacles remain a significant barrier to their future growth.

APEC's latest report highlights successful Atlantic Indigenous businesses and the impact they have on Atlantic Canada’s economy. The study notes that Atlantic Indigenous business revenues were valued at $1.6 billion in 2016, almost 137% more than in 2012. These firms are benefitting the region, creating jobs and income for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous workers: 40% of employees are non-Indigenous workers receiving $118 million in wages.

This webinar will provide an overview of the purpose of the research, economic impact of Indigenous businesses in Atlantic Canada, opportunities and challenges, gender-based analysis, and options for growth and policy initiatives.

Research conducted by the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business shows that Indigenous small business owners across Canada are growing in numbers and experiencing wide-spread success in terms of profitability and growth and in ways that go beyond the bottom-line. Nationally, the number of Indigenous business owners and entrepreneurs is growing at five times the rate of self-employed Canadians overall. The research identifies the number, industry scope and geography of Atlantic Indigenous businesses and their economic contribution and provides actionable recommendations to inform and expand business growth.

This study shows that Atlantic Indigenous business revenues were valued at $1.6 billion in 2016, an increase of +137% since 2012 and growing! Research shows $296 million in total wages paid by Indigenous business by over 850 Indigenous business with almost half (48%) being women-owned business/controlled. APEC’s report highlights factors that could further their growth. The research identifies the number, industry scope and geography of Atlantic Indigenous businesses and their economic contribution and provides actionable recommendations to inform and expand business growth.

Workforce talent recruitment and retention is one of the most urgent issues facing the Atlantic region. In the next decade, the Canadian economy is expected to offer significant opportunities for employment. Those opportunities reflect both Canada’s emergence as a knowledge economy and the impact of retirement from the workforce of the baby boomer generation. An expectation exists that future demand for a skilled labour force will be serviced, in part, by an increasing Indigenous workforce. The research provides data to inform mobilization of the more favorable demography of Indigenous communities to positively influence their employment outcomes and, by doing so, improve labour market outcomes in the Atlantic region overall.

Since the launch of the Atlantic Growth Strategy, the governments of Canada and the Atlantic provinces have worked collaboratively to build a vibrant economic future for Atlantic Canada by focusing on five strategic priorities:

-skilled workforce and immigration,
-innovation,
-clean growth and climate change,
-trade and investment,
- and infrastructure.

The Atlantic Growth Strategy is about accelerating the growth of Atlantic Canada’s economy. It was launched in July 2016 by the Government of Canada and the governments of Newfoundland and Labrador (NL), Nova Scotia (NS), Prince Edward Island (PEI) and New Brunswick (NB) to create good-paying middle class jobs, strengthen local communities, and grow innovative, world-class companies in the region. The Strategy is results-focused, pan-Atlantic,collaborative, and reflects the priorities of the four Atlantic provinces and the Government of Canada. As it enters its third year, the Atlantic Growth Strategy continues to prove its value as a collaborative forum to align opportunities for economic growth in the region in an inclusive and sustainable way.

This 2019 research study is the most comprehensive to
date and while it provides a comparative analysis between
2003 and 2019, the emphasis of the analysis is placed
on the more relevant data between 2012 and 2019. The
updated information allows for an understanding of the
status of WBOs in Atlantic Canada and the directional
trends of the key criteria of both studies. New to this
study was a review of WBOs who identified as members
of other under-represented groups (Indigenous People,
visible minorities, LGBTQ2, persons with a disability) as
well as an expanded focus on innovation activity.
