Imagine paying extra simply because you chose virtual support instead of showing up in person. That’s the reality for many Canadians with disabilities right now — and it’s unfair.

Waterloo advocate Abigail Murphy is fighting to change that with petition e-6674, which asks the federal government to remove taxes on virtual disability support services. In-person supports are already tax-exempt, so why not virtual ones too?

This isn’t just about numbers on a tax form. It’s about fairness, dignity, and access.

Why This Matters So Much

  • Saving real money. A person with a disabilities can end up paying hundreds, even over thousands a year, in unnecessary taxes just because they access support services online. That money could go toward more support hours, therapies, or essential needs. For families already stretched thin, it makes a huge difference.

  • Virtual is often the only option. In-person programs are expensive (often costing thousands each year), can be hard to find, and sometimes out of reach due to waitlists or strict eligibility rules. Virtual programs are more affordable and flexible – but they’re currently penalized by tax rules.

  • Breaking down barriers. Many people face transportation challenges, live in rural communities, or simply don’t have a local day program nearby. Virtual support isn’t “optional” for them – it’s their lifeline.

  • Equity where it’s needed most. 40% of Canadians living below the poverty line are disabled, so this is exactly the community that needs, and deserves, a tax break.

Where Things Stand

Murphy has already proven there’s strong support for this change. Her first petition gathered over 700 signatures before being dissolved during an election. Now she’s back, with Green Party Leader Elizabeth May sponsoring the new push. The hope is simple: get Parliament to recognize that the tax code is outdated and fix it.

But this only happens if enough Canadians show they care. At least 500 signatures are needed before the October deadline — and more signatures show stronger support.

Why You Should Sign

Even if you’re not directly affected, chances are you know someone who is — a friend, a parent, a neighbor. By signing petition e-6674, you’re standing for fairness, accessibility, and smarter policies that reflect today’s realities.

Every signature sends a clear message: virtual supports are just as vital as in-person ones, and people with disabilities deserve the same tax break either way.

For most people, feeling a sense of purpose is a key part of living a fulfilling life. Having goals, passions, and reasons to wake up in the morning can make the human experience richer and more meaningful. But for some individuals with disabilities, finding that meaning isn’t always easy.

There are many societal and socially imposed barriers that often get in the way for people with disabilities. Lack of access to employment, heavy stigma, and isolation from community often result in obstacles and roadblocks. However, developing a sense of purpose and meaning may be even more vital when you are disabled. It can provide motivation, heighten self-worth, and offer a sense of identity outside of one’s disability. Here are a few reasons why:

Confidence & Self Esteem

Having drive and ambitions that move you can boost confidence and self-esteem immensely. It can replace negative feelings with energy and direction. Even if your goals are simple, having something motivating you makes you feel empowered rather than diminished by your disability.

Psychological Well-Being

Finding meaning is one of the pillars of psychological well-being. It provides a buffer against negative mindsets that can lead to depression and anxiety. Individuals with disabilities can be at greater risk for these mental health challenges, so cultivating purpose takes on even more importance.

Quality of Life

With purpose comes activities, social connections, and a sense of productivity – all factors that contribute to a higher quality of life. Daily life feels more satisfying when you are engaged with meaningful hobbies, work, volunteering, or any activities providing gratification.

Broader Perspectives

When you are focused on personal missions and aims, it prevents you from being defined entirely by your disability. It keeps you oriented towards your values, hopes and strength as a person. A strong sense of identity promotes resilience.

There are endless examples of individuals who have not let disability stand in the way of living vibrant, impactful lives. From acclaimed artists and writers to influential activists and scientists, disability is a common part of the human experience and does not negate meaning and purpose.

Finding meaning looks different for everyone, but taking steps to discover passions, contribute to others, and live by your values can unlock a world of fulfillment. Humanity’s diversity is what makes it so powerful. Disability is just another form of that diversity to be celebrated.

At the heart of a purposeful life lies the ability to express oneself and make a mark on the world, which means something different to everyone. Take Mohammed (aka Moe) for example, a 27-year-old artist and member of Adults In Motion, who found one of his many purposes through designing and selling t-shirts. His journey reminds us how creative pursuits can provide a sense of fulfillment and purpose, especially for individuals with disabilities.

Moe’s artistic journey began with a flash of inspiration – the Skull King design. “I came up with the idea myself cause I’m a genius,” Moe proudly states. This moment of creativity, nurtured by his brother’s support, blossomed into a physical product that is now worn by people across the province.

For Moe, the process of creating his T-shirts and art is a source of immense joy. “My favourite part is that I love art” he shares. Perhaps the most rewarding aspect of Moe’s journey is seeing his creations out in the world. “I feel absolutely crazy, I’m so happy and excited, my heart is pumped, I’m very proud of myself,” Moe exclaims when asked about people wearing his designs. This sense of pride and accomplishment underscores the importance of having tangible results from one’s efforts, particularly for individuals with disabilities.

Moe’s ambitions extend beyond his current success. He aspires to become a “much bigger designer” and dreams of the “whole world” wearing his designs. These goals have given Moe a sense of direction and purpose, which we can see has driven his personal growth and motivation.

It’s important to note that Moe’s success is not a solo endeavor. With the help of his brother, Moayad, Moe has been able to bring his creative visions to life. Big brother Moayad’s role reminds us of the crucial role that family/support, play in helping individuals with disabilities achieve their goals.

Moe’s journey is not just about creating t-shirts; it’s about embracing his identity and sharing positivity with the world. When asked to describe himself in a few words, Moe states that he is “amazing, good, loved and awesome,” with a strong sense of self-worth. His message to the world – “be kind, and love yourself” – captures Moe’s positive outlook that fuels his life and dreams.

Expression of oneself and making a mark on the world can happen in big or small ways, subtly or loudly but everyones life holds a purpose and meaning with all our journeys being different. Moe’s story just reminds us how finding new purposes and passions can transform a life, regardless of ability or disability. Through his t-shirt designs, Moe has found a way to express himself, contribute to the world, and build a sense of pride and accomplishment. Mo reminds us of the importance of nurturing creativity, supporting dreams, and recognizing the unique contributions that individuals with disabilities can make to our world. Moe’s story encourages us all to find our own “Skull King” – that spark of inspiration that can lead to a life filled with purpose, pride, and joy – no matter what that looks like to you.

Representation matters, and the way disabled individuals are portrayed in films, television shows, books, and other media can significantly impact public understanding and attitudes. Simply said, the media plays a significant role in shaping society’s perceptions of disability. Exploring the importance of authentic disability representation and its role in fostering a more inclusive society is worth talking about.

The Importance of Authentic Representation

Authentic representation of disability in media is crucial for several reasons:

  1. Visibility and Normalization: When disabled characters are portrayed authentically, it helps normalize disability in society and shows that disabled individuals are an integral part of our diverse world.
  2. Breaking Stereotypes: Accurate portrayals can challenge misconceptions and stereotypes about disability, promoting a more nuanced understanding.
  3. Role Models: Disabled individuals, especially young people, benefit from seeing themselves represented positively in the media.
  4. Education: Authentic portrayals can educate the public about different disabilities and the lived experiences of disabled individuals.
  5. Employment Opportunities: Increased representation can lead to more job opportunities for disabled actors, writers, directors, and other media professionals.

The Current State of Disability Representation

Despite making up a significant portion of the global population, people with disabilities are often underrepresented or misrepresented in the media. When they do appear, characters with disabilities are frequently:

  • Played by non-disabled actors
  • Portrayed as one-dimensional characters defined solely by their disability
  • Depicted as objects of pity or inspiration rather than complex individuals
  • Shown overcoming their disability rather than living with it as a part of their identity

These portrayals can perpetuate harmful stereotypes and misconceptions about the disability community.

Positive Trends in Disability Representation

While there’s still much progress to be made, recent years have seen some positive developments in disability representation:

  • Increased casting of disabled actors in disabled roles
  • More complex and multidimensional disabled characters in TV shows and films
  • Growing number of disabled content creators on social media platforms
  • Emergence of disability-focused podcasts and web series
  • Inclusion of disability narratives in mainstream literature and children’s books

The Impact of Positive Representation

When done well, authentic disability representation can have a profound impact:

  • Increased empathy and understanding among non-disabled individuals
  • Improved self-esteem and sense of belonging for disabled individuals
  • Reduction in stigma and discrimination
  • Greater awareness of accessibility issues and disability rights
  • Inspiration for disabled individuals to pursue careers in media and the arts

How to Support Better Disability Representation

As consumers and allies, we can all play a role in promoting better disability representation:

  • Support media that features authentic disability representation
  • Speak up against harmful or stereotypical portrayals
  • Follow and amplify disabled content creators and artists
  • Advocate for inclusion of disabled individuals in writer’s rooms, production teams, and executive positions
  • Educate yourself about different disabilities and the importance of representation

As we celebrate Disability Pride Month, let’s recognize the power of media representation in shaping societal attitudes. By supporting and demanding authentic portrayals of disability in all forms of media, we can contribute to a more inclusive and understanding world. Remember, representation isn’t just about seeing disabled individuals on screen or in print—it’s about seeing them as full, complex human beings with stories worth telling and voices worth hearing. Let’s work together to ensure that disability representation in media reflects the rich diversity and lived experiences of the disability community.

In October 2021, creator Ann Magill unveiled a new Disability Pride flag, designed to represent the strength and unity of the disability community. The flag’s design underwent revisions based on input from the disability community, resulting in a powerful symbol that resonates with many.

Understanding the Flag’s Design

The flag features diagonal pattern lines in five colors: red, gold, white, blue, and green. These parallel stripes symbolize intercommunity solidarity, while their diagonal positioning represents the ability of disabled people to overcome societal barriers.

1. Color Symbolism

  • Green: Represents sensory disabilities (e.g., blindness, low vision, deafness)
  • Blue: Symbolizes psychiatric disabilities (e.g., anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, schizophrenia)
  • White: Represents non-visible or undiagnosed disabilities (e.g., chronic fatigue, chronic pain, multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia)
  • Gold: Symbolizes cognitive and intellectual disabilities (e.g., autism spectrum disorder, brain injuries, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder)
  • Red: Represents physical disabilities (e.g., stroke, arthritis, spinal cord injuries)

2. Background

The colours are displayed on a black or faded charcoal background. This dark back drop serves two purposes:

  • It honours those within the disability community who have passed away due to ableism, violence, suicide, illness, and other causes.
  • The faded appearance symbolizes the history of protest and mistreatment experienced by the disabled community.

3. Light and Dark Contrast

The design emphasizes light cutting through darkness, representing hope, progress, and the resilience of the disability community.

The Significance of Disability Pride Month

Disability Pride Month is a social movement that celebrates disability as a valued aspect of human diversity. This month-long observance is about empowerment, acceptance, and advocacy for individuals with disabilities. It plays a crucial role in shifting the focus from perceived limitations to the strengths of the disability community.

During this time, we embrace uniqueness and diversity, recognizing the fundamental rights, autonomy, and agency of disabled individuals. Respecting the dignity of disabled individuals means ensuring fair, compassionate, and equal treatment for the entire disabled community.

Challenging Stigma and Promoting Inclusion

Despite the progress made in recent decades, ableist views continue to persist in society, often leading to stigma, exclusion, and shame. Disability Pride Month serves as a platform to educate the public, challenge stereotypes, and promote a more inclusive society.

By celebrating disability pride, we work towards:

  • Increasing visibility of the disability community
  • Promoting self-advocacy and empowerment
  • Challenging negative perceptions and stereotypes
  • Advocating for accessibility and equal rights
  • Fostering a sense of community and belonging

Embracing Disability Pride

As we celebrate Disability Pride Month, it’s essential to remember that disability is a natural part of human diversity. The Disability Pride Flag serves as a powerful reminder of the strength, resilience, and unity within the disability community. It encourages us to challenge ableist notions, promote inclusivity, and celebrate the unique perspectives and contributions of disabled individuals.

How to Participate in Disability Pride Month

Whether you’re a member of the disability community or an ally, Disability Pride Month offers an opportunity to learn, engage, and advocate for a more inclusive world. Here are some ways to participate:

  • Educate yourself about disability issues and rights
  • Amplify disabled voices on social media and in your community
  • Attend or organize disability pride events
  • Support businesses and organizations owned or run by disabled individuals
  • Advocate for accessibility and inclusion in your workplace and community

Conclusion

By understanding the symbolism behind the Disability Pride Flag and embracing its message, we can all contribute to creating a society that truly values and includes

people of all abilities. Let’s use this month to amplify disabled voices, challenge stereotypes, and work towards a future where disability is recognized and celebrated as an integral part of human diversity.

Happy Disability Pride Month!

History of the Sunflower Lanyard Program
The Sunflower Lanyard program was introduced in 2016 at London Gatwick Airport,
initially designed to identify passengers with hidden disabilities who may require
additional assistance while traveling. Its creators aimed to provide a subtle yet visible
means for airport staff to recognize that the wearer may need extra help, time, or
understanding while navigating through the airport. Since its inception, this discrete
signaling system has gained global adoption by major airports, supermarkets, railway and
coach stations, leisure facilities, healthcare organizations, various businesses, and other
entities, allowing for increased support and understanding for individuals with invisible
disabilities.

Current Uses of Sunflower Lanyards
Presently, the Sunflower Lanyard is utilized to assist individuals with hidden disabilities
in various settings. Its recognition spans over 130 airports, more than 450 universities,
schools, and colleges, the railway network, theme parks, supermarkets, leisure facilities,
healthcare, financial services, emergency services, theaters, and over 350 charities in the
UK. This program has also been implemented globally, being acknowledged in countries
such as the United States, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Ireland, the
Netherlands, New Zealand, France, Norway, Lithuania, and the United Arab Emirates.
The lanyard supports individuals with a diverse range of hidden disabilities, including but
not limited to neurodivergence, hearing loss, epilepsy, diabetes, chronic pain, autism,
dementia, Crohn’s, mental health conditions, mobility issues, speech and hearing
impairments, and sensory loss.

Where Sunflower Lanyards Can Be Used
Sunflower Lanyards are useful in a variety of settings to support individuals with
invisible disabilities. These extend to:
1. Airports: Recognized in numerous airports worldwide, including Toronto Pearson
Airport, to provide additional assistance and accommodations to travelers wearing
them.

2. Public Transportation: Used on buses, trains, and subway systems in some regions
to offer assistance or additional time for boarding and alighting for wearers.

3. Retail and Shopping Centers: Acknowledged by stores and shopping malls to facilitate

a more understanding and supportive shopping experience.

4. Entertainment Venues: Employed in cinemas, theaters, and theme parks to offer
assistance or special accommodations to lanyard wearers.

5. Educational Institutions: Recognized by certain schools and universities to provide
support to students with invisible disabilities in accessing education and facilities.

6. Healthcare Facilities: Adopted by hospitals and clinics to identify patients who
may need extra support or patience from healthcare professionals.

7. Public Events and Conferences: Acknowledged by organizers of public events,
exhibitions, and conferences, where wearers are offered support or special
accommodations.

How the Sunflower Lanyard Program Works
This program is designed to support individuals with invisible disabilities by providing a
discreet means to indicate that they may need additional support, patience, or
understanding when navigating public spaces. The Sunflower Lanyard operates on the
following principles:
Identification: This distinct green lanyard featuring a pattern of sunflowers is worn
around the neck and can be worn with or without an attached ID card, signifying to others
that the wearer has an invisible disability.

Availability: Sunflower Lanyards can be obtained from customer service desks,
participating locations, or online for free, allowing individuals to choose whether they
wish to signal their need for extra support in a subtle manner.

Voluntary Use: Wearing a Sunflower Lanyard is entirely optional, providing individuals
the choice to indicate their need for additional support without having to disclose details
about their condition.

Staff Training: Staff members across participating organizations are trained to recognize
the lanyard and understand that it signifies the wearer may have invisible disabilities,
ensuring they can offer appropriate assistance and understanding

Assistance Offered: The nature of the support provided can vary depending on the setting
and specific individual needs. It may include more time to complete tasks, offering
clearer guidance, access to priority seating or queues, and being more patient and
understanding during interactions.

Privacy: The program respects individuals’ privacy by allowing them to signal their need
for support without disclosing the specifics of their disability to others.

Awareness and Inclusivity: In addition to practical assistance, the Sunflower Lanyard
program raises awareness about invisible disabilities, cultivating a culture of inclusivity
and understanding in society.

Importance of Sunflower Lanyards for Accessibility
The Sunflower Lanyard program is vital for enhancing accessibility and
inclusivity in public spaces due to several key factors:

Raising Awareness: It promotes awareness and understanding of hidden
disabilities, fostering empathy and contributing to a more inclusive environment.

Empowering Individuals: It provides a discrete communication channel for
individuals with hidden disabilities, enabling them to access support without
disclosing personal medical information.

Improving Experiences: By ensuring individuals receive the necessary support, the
program greatly enhances their experiences in public spaces, reducing anxiety and
stress.

Encouraging Inclusivity: The adoption of Sunflower Lanyards by a wide range of
organizations sends a powerful message about the importance of inclusivity and
accessibility, encouraging other entities to improve their support for individuals
with disabilities.

As the Sunflower Lanyard Program continues to gain traction and is adopted by an
increasing number of organizations worldwide, the Sunflower Lanyard program
exemplifies the transformative impact of fostering understanding, empathy, and support
for individuals with hidden disabilities. Its role in promoting accessibility and inclusivity
is invaluable, and its expanding influence heralds a future where all individuals,

Puzzles – Beyond Entertainment

In a world where simplicity meets complexity, puzzles stand as more than just a source of entertainment. They embody a therapeutic tool, a catalyst for growth and empowerment, for people of all abilities, including individuals with and without developmental disabilities. This in-depth exploration will unveil how these unassuming pieces of cardboard and digital imagery can significantly impact cognitive, emotional, and social well-being.

The Cognitive Benefits of Puzzles

Enhancing Cognitive Functions

Puzzles, in their myriad forms, provide a unique avenue for cognitive development. They are not just a passive way to pass time but an active engagement for the mind, offering a playful yet potent way to exercise various brain functions. Puzzles can open a door to improved cognitive abilities, serving as a non-intrusive and enjoyable method to enhance brain function.

Memory Enhancement through Puzzling

One of the primary cognitive benefits puzzles offer is the enhancement of memory. Jigsaw puzzles, in particular, require the recollection of shapes, colors, and patterns. Each time an individual places a piece correctly, it reinforces memory pathways, improving both short-term and visual memory. The repeated action of recalling and matching pieces exercises the brain in a manner similar to muscle memory in physical activity.

Problem-Solving and Reasoning

Beyond memory, puzzles are a fantastic tool for honing problem-solving skills. They require the solver to think logically, plan steps ahead, and adjust strategies as needed. This is particularly evident in complex puzzles where the solution is not immediately apparent, and one must experiment with different approaches.  For people of all abilities, including individuals with and without developmental disabilities, these activities encourage thinking outside the box, enhancing their ability to approach everyday problems with improved reasoning skills.

Attention and Concentration

In an age of constant distractions, the ability to concentrate on a single task for an extended period is invaluable. Puzzles inherently demand a level of focus and concentration that can be therapeutic. They help individuals practice maintaining attention on a task, thus improving overall concentration and focus. This skill, once honed, can significantly impact other areas of life, aiding in the ability to complete tasks and follow through with responsibilities.

Emotional and Psychological Advantages

Stress Relief through Puzzling

The act of puzzle-solving has a naturally calming effect, making it an excellent tool for stress relief. The focused state required for solving a puzzle allows for a form of escapism, where daily stressors can fade into the background, offering a much-needed mental break. This aspect is particularly beneficial for those who may experience heightened levels of stress and anxiety. The repetitive nature of fitting pieces together can provide a soothing rhythm that helps in reducing feelings of anxiety.

Building Self-Esteem and Confidence

Completing a puzzle, no matter the size or complexity, is a moment of achievement. For individuals facing daily challenges, these small victories can have a significant impact on their self-esteem.  For people of all abilities, including individuals with and without developmental disabilities, the sense of accomplishment that comes with solving a puzzle reinforces self-belief and the ability to overcome obstacles. This boost in confidence can extend beyond the puzzle, inspiring a more positive outlook on personal abilities and potential.

Social Interaction through Puzzles

Encouraging Teamwork and Communication

Puzzle activities, especially when done in groups, can serve as a bridge to enhanced social interaction. Collaborative puzzle-solving encourages communication, sharing of ideas, and teamwork. Participants learn to articulate their thoughts, listen to others, and work together towards a common goal. These skills are crucial for social integration and are particularly valuable for people who may struggle with social cues and interactions.

Building a Community through Shared Interests

Puzzles can also serve as a catalyst for community building. Joining a puzzle club or participating in group puzzle activities can offer a sense of belonging and connection. For people with or without developmental disabilities, this can be a gateway to forging new friendships and feeling part of a community. Shared interests create a common ground, making interactions more comfortable and enjoyable.

Types of Puzzles and Their Suitability

A Spectrum of Puzzles for Diverse Needs

The world of puzzles is incredibly diverse, offering something for every interest and ability level. Traditional jigsaw puzzles come in various sizes and difficulty levels, from large-piece puzzles for beginners to intricate designs with thousands of pieces for more advanced enthusiasts. Word puzzles like crosswords and word searches cater to those with a penchant for language, while logic puzzles like Sudoku challenge reasoning and mathematical skills.

Tailoring Puzzles to Individual Abilities

When selecting puzzles for therapeutic purposes, it’s crucial to consider the individual’s abilities and interests. The goal is to provide a challenging yet achievable task that keeps the individual engaged without causing frustration. For instance, large-piece jigsaw puzzles with vibrant imagery might be suitable for individuals with fine motor skills challenges or visual impairments. Similarly, puzzles with tactile elements can offer a sensory experience beneficial for those with sensory processing disorders.

Practical Tips for Incorporating Puzzles in Therapy

Establishing a Puzzle-Friendly Environment

Creating an environment conducive to puzzle-solving can significantly enhance the therapeutic experience. This means setting up a quiet, well-lit area that’s comfortable and inviting. For individuals with sensory sensitivities, it’s important to ensure the space is free from overwhelming stimuli. A consistent and dedicated space for puzzle activities can help in establishing a routine and making the experience something to look forward to.

Gradual Progression in Complexity

Starting with simpler puzzles and gradually increasing complexity can foster a sense of progression and achievement. It’s important to celebrate each milestone, no matter how small, to keep motivation high. Therapists and caregivers should closely observe the individual’s response to different puzzle types and difficulty levels, adjusting accordingly to provide the right balance of challenge and enjoyment.

Incorporating Puzzles into Daily Routines

Making puzzles a part of the daily routine can provide structure and a sense of predictability, which can often feel comforting for some, regardless of ability level.  This could be a short puzzle-solving session every day or a longer session a few times a week, depending on the individual’s schedule and attention span.
