The Imperial Death Troopers have come a long way. First seeing life in Rouge One: A Star Wars Story, the DT’s commandeered a title that had previously been used for something almost completely different. But zombified Stormtroopers aside, Rogue One unleashed a fresh fan-favorite with this new troop-type.

Since appearing the film, Death Troopers have shown up in a few key places. One of the biggest and most impactful of those was The Mandalorian, where they made things rough for Din D’jarin as shock troopers for Moff Gideon.

And now collectible company Denuo Novo is picking up that gleaming black ball and running with it for the company’s newest offering. Yes, it’s a Death Trooper helmet.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Comic

How’d you like Rogue One? Chances are, that if you’re any sort of fan, that you liked it quite a lot. The film cleaned up at the box office and gave fans a good old fashioned Star Wars tale. How can you miss when you’ve got Stormtroopers, the Death Star, a badass Darth Vader scene, and even freaking Grand Moff Tarkin! It kinda hit all the high notes.

Oddly missing though, was a Marvel Comics adaptation. But since the publisher is owned by Lucasfilm owner Disney, you had to know that was coming. And… here we are.

Marvel has announced that a six issue mini-series is coming, which will retell the story of Rogue One, will hit stores courtesy of writer Jody Houser and artist Emilio Laiso. And if you’re thinking that there’s no reason to really read the series if you saw the film, well, think again. Apparently, there’ll be a fair bit more than what you saw on screen.

“[Director] Gareth Edwards and Lucasfilm had a number of ideas for moments that didn’t fit in the film that I’m working with,” says writer Jody Houser in an interview with Marvel.com. “There are also some amazing moments in the novelization I want to incorporate. So it’s really a mix of material from existing versions of the story, as well as new scenes.”

Ready to go Rogue once again? Rogue One: A Star Wars Story #1 (of 6) hits stores and digital storefronts this April.

The war rages on Scarif

That was, of course, the trailer for the Ultimate Edition of Star Wars Battlefront. And while you will get the new Rogue One content separately or as a part of the Season Pass, you can also opt to simply pick up that new version of the game. That way, you’ll get everything. Kind of useful if you’ve skipped chunks of content from throughout this past year.

If you haven’t though, and you’re up to date on your Battlefront-ing here in 2016, then Scarif alone is what you’re looking forward to. And it looks pretty great, with AT-ACTs, U-Wings, Shore Troopers, and rebel soldiers all hitting the beach. Not that that’s the only new level, as you’ll get another three in the pack. And along with all that, you’ll also get access to two new heroes with Jyn Erso and Orson Krennic. So it’s a good deal of Rogue One content that’s heading gamers’ way.

And again, all this will be happening on December 6th… but that’s not all. On the sixth, PSVR gamers will also be getting the special Rogue One VR mission. In that, you’ll get to actually fly an X-Wing in virtual reality. That’s kind of reminiscent of that old Star Wars arcade machine, except you know, way better.

Oh – the VR mission is free too. Did I mention that? As long as you’ve got a copy of Star Wars Battlefront on the PS4 and a PSVR headset, you’re good to go to download the mission.

As for the movie itself, that’s right around the corner too. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters on the 16th of next month.

Rogue One features a new kind of Walker

By ‘Walker’ I don’t mean zombies. I’m talking about the gigantic, metallic variety that are piloted by the Empire’s finest.

In the films, we’ve seen AT-AT’s in action twice. Once was on the forest moon of Endor, though there one was just kind of walking around. It was in the previous film, on the frozen wastes of Hoth, that we saw what these monsters were really capable of.

We’re about to see them again too… well, sort of. The Walkers in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story aren’t AT-AT’s really, but AT-ACT’s. What’s that mean? Well it means they’re a little different, and serve a (technically) different purpose in the Star Wars universe’s fiction.

Bottom line, they look pretty freaking cool. And so does the toy from Hasbro.

Big and bad

Easily the biggest toy in the new series of Rogue One figures and vehicles from Hasbro, the AT-ACT is pretty great looking. It’s also pretty big looking. I guess, anyway, as the only definite what we know is that it’s in the 3.75″ scale.

There are no detail for size in the official listing, but it looks similar to the Walker that hit retail a few years back. If you remember that one, it was something like twice the size of the classic Walker from the 80s. And it was uber-detailed too, with even an included speeder bike. Still, it’s hard to tell from the image and I’m going to say to be cautious, just in case. So you might want to assume that it’s in the smaller scale.

This new one has no bike either, but it does have three figures and a removable cargo bay. The bay apparently folds out into a small playset, which is a nice little bonus. Oh, and the Walker is remote controlled too. Did I mention that?

Yep, you can use an app on your phone to make this sucker actually stomp across your home/yard/whatever. Seems pretty awesome honestly. If you agree, then you might also be thinking that the AT-ACT is pretty expensive. Guess what? You’re right.

Features don’t come cheap

This big guy is $299.99 USD. Yes, you read right, and yes that’s a lot ‘o’ dough. It does seem pretty awesome though, and if you’re a big enough Star Wars fan… Well if you’re a big enough Star Wars fan, it might be worth it to you.

Star Wars Battlefront stays on target

Despite being a year old (and picked at by fans a bit), Star Wars Battlefront is still going pretty strong. The multiplayer-centric game has had a pile of DLC hit this year, and more to go, so it’s actually gotten quite content-rich since launch.

If you only own the vanilla edition though, well there’s not all that much to it. And some of you out there might have skipped this one all together because of that. Now that there’s so much more to do though, and that VR mission is incoming, you might be tempted to either upgrade or buy-in.

And if that’s on your mind, then you’re going to want to get the Star Wars Battlefront Ultimate Edition. This new flavor of the game has the base title and all the DLC released. So you get the Outer Rim, Bespin, Death Star, and Rogue One: Scarif packs. That’s a mighty 30 maps, 14 hero characters, and 14 game modes that you get to play with. Not too shabby at all.

Also, remember that the PSVR mission, based on Rogue One, is also coming up as a free download. Anyone who owns a PS4 copy of the game and a PSVR headset will get to play it. Pretty nice as a freebie. Plenty of incentive there to give Battlefront a shot.

Whether you’re into Micro Machines, LEGO sets, action figures, or even wearable helmets, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is in full effect today. Last year, Force Friday meant several stores nationwide opened their doors at midnight the eve before. This year though, things were a little different.

Only Toys R Us’ cracked the door at the stroke of 12. If you couldn’t make it for that, chances are that what you wanted might have been sold out. I know last year, I went to a TRU at midnight and walked away with only a couple of the things that I wanted to snag for The Force Awakens. If that’s the case for you too, then that means that you’re going to want to head online.

If that’s what you’re looking to do, then you might want to pop over to our pals at Entertainment Earth. The internet collectible superstore has pretty much everything Rogue One, including some of the harder to find stuff.

Rogue One lands at Revell

With Rogue One being just a few short months away, we’re headed once again for peak Star Wars. I suspect that’s something that might be happening quite a bit in the years to come, since Disney has a full slate of Star Wars goodness planned. Some of the coolest stuff going along with the latest film has to be Revell’s lineup.

Yes, I know that most collectors might not look to model kits as a favored target, but they honestly should. Sure you have to build ’em, but they generally look a fair bit better than any toy. Case in point- the three new kits from Revell. The company’s Star Wars kits that saw release last year were ranked first in the category by NPD based on consumer data too, so you know these are worth a peek.

Much like last year’s models, all three of these new plastic kits are SnapTite, meaning there’s no glue needed. This is pretty important for both those who generally don’t get into model-making, as well as kids. Glue is never all that great of an idea for the younger set after all… or me really, but that’s another story.

And after snapped together, the vehicles will stay together according to the company. Heck, you don’t even need paint with these, another big plus for the uninitiated. Oh, and did I mention they have lights and sounds? Yep, the batteries are even included.

Here’s what the lineup looks like:

• Revell Star Wars SnapTite Build & Play Rebel U-wing Fighter (MSRP $19.99) – a model kit replica of a sleek new troop transport/gunship that will be unveiled in Rogue One. The 35-piece plastic model kit features a lighted cockpit that reveals Rebel soldiers ready for combat, rotating wings that can switch between two flying modes, removable landing gear, and battle action sound effects that let kids’ imaginations soar.
• Revell Star Wars SnapTite Build & Play Imperial Star Destroyer(MSRP $29.99) – a plastic model version of the signature vessel of the Imperial fleet introduced in Star Wars: A New Hope in 1977. From box, to shelf- in no time flat

With about an hour’s time to assemble each one, you can get ’em together in a pretty short period and get to playing… I mean, displaying. Definitely displaying. That’s something they should look good doing too. You know, being displayed. All three of these kits were crafted using the computer data straight from the movie. Authenticity is a nice little plus for any fan.

As for release dates, the kits hit stores right along with the rest of the Rogue One deluge. So you can expect to see them on September the 30th. Find ’em at your local Toys R Us, Target, and Hobby Lobby stores, or online at Amazon.com.

Force Friday cometh

It seems like it was just last year that kids and collectors alike crowded into Toys R Us stores for Force Friday, the walls lined with figures, LEGOs, and everything else… Oh, you know what, some to think of it it was last year. With Disney now in control of Star Wars, we’re in for more from that Galaxy Far, Far Away on pretty much a yearly basis. For non-fans, that’s probably a drag, but for those of us who’ve grown up with Lucas’ baby, well, it’s a good time.

This year, just like the last, TRU has some late night partying planned for the release. Unlike the last though, TRU will be the only game in town for midnight openings. That’s quite the coup for them, and they’ve got a nice long selling season ahead too. Don’t forget that the movie hits on December 16th, but Force Friday will take place on September 30th. Time enough for a few waves of toys? I think so.

When you head to your local TRU on the 30th, you’ll find most of what the first volley of Rogue One toys will offer. If last year is any indication however, get there early. I went at about 12:30am and found more than a few things already gone. Just an FYI for you.

If you do want to secure your goodies before you go though, the store is offering preorders on a few items. Probably figured to be some of the biggest sellers of the season, you can lock up the following as of right now:

As for the particulars on the midnight openings themselves, stores will open their doors at 12 midnight local time. Sales on Toysrus.com on the other hand, will be timed to eastern standard. So feel free to log on and buy right then, no matter where you are.

If you go to a brick and mortar though, you’ll get an exclusive poster and t-shirt to take home free of charge, while supplies last. Yet another reason to eschew online shopping and get yourself to a store early.

Is it December yet? If you’re a Star Wars fan, then chances are that’s what you’re wondering right now. It’s not of course. It’s August. which means that there’s about four months left till Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits the big screen, and oh what a long four months they’re going to be. Fortunately, you have this new trailer to pour over in the meantime.

Star Wars, but grittier

There’s not a huge amount of time between this film and the original movies, and you can clearly tell that. True Rogue One does have new troopers and new vehicles, but all of them retain the flavor of the original trilogy. As a Star Wars fan who’s mostly into the series because of those movies, I like what I’m seeing.

The roots of the Rebellion are plain to see here, in the story of the force that took on the Empire and walked away with the plans to the first Death Star. And we all know how that played out in the end. Still, there’s plenty of mystery here, since many of the characters in Rogue One are new. And this is essentially a standalone movie, so there are no guarantees as to who lives and who dies. Well, except for Mon Mothma and Darth Vader. I have a pretty good idea that they’ll be living past eh end credits.

Rogue One also looks to be the darkest Star Wars movie maybe ever. I’m sure there are some light moments here and there, this is Star Wars after all, but this is looking grimmer than The Empire Strikes Back. That’s a good thing as far as I’m concerned by the way.

Recent news and notes

Also worth noting is that it was announced recently that Forest Whittaker’s character is actually Saw Gerrera. Sound familiar? That’s probably because Gerrera is a Clone Wars character, from the cartoon show. He’s also a ruthless fighter, which should make for some interesting scenes with main character Jyn Erso, who works closely (though seemingly reluctantly) with rebel leaders Mothma and Bail Organa.

Oh yeah, that’s right, Jimmy Smits’ Organa returns from the prequel trilogy for this film, which makes for some pretty neat linkage. And then there’s Darth Vader in there at the end. Yes, it’s like a half second and we don’t even see the front of his mask, but hardcore fans should be pretty happy just to hear that respirator.

It’s going to be a long Autumn; Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters on December 16th.
