If you don’t take the time to identify and define your vision for your life, you’re risking never knowing where you want to be or when you arrive.

About a millennium ago, when I was in high school, I met a guy named John Hicks. John and I discovered we each had a mutual love of rock ‘n’ roll, so we formed a band and got to experience the heady rush of being (very) minor rock stars in our small community. It felt so good that when we moved away to college, we rented a house, found some more musicians, and started another band. John was a great lyricist, and I played some guitar, so we wrote many songs together that became international hits nobody’s ever heard of.

What is your vision article by funny motivational speaker Charles MarshallLike just about everybody else back in those days, John and I went our separate ways after college and completely lost touch with each other. Then Facebook came along and now we’re all back in touch with all the people we hoped we’d never hear from again.

But it wasn’t that way with John. We reconnected on Facebook and messaged back and forth, catching up on each other’s lives. About a month later, I noticed John’s name pop up in my feed. Someone had posted a video clip from the movie O Brother, Where Art Thou? tagging John with the comment, “This still makes me smile.” John replied, “Thanks for remembering.” And that was it.

In case you’re one of the four or five people on the planet who haven’t seen it, O Brother, Where Art Thou? is a movie set in rural Mississippi during the Great Depression. It stars George Clooney, who plays Everett, an escaped convict. Early in the movie, Everett and some of his friends record a song as the Soggy Bottom Boys, and that song becomes a big local radio hit in their area.

In a climactic scene toward the end of the movie, Everett and his band are on stage at a campaign rally singing their big hit. When the crowd recognizes the song, they go wild and start clapping along with the music. After a few bars, some redneck in the back of the room shouts out, “Hot [dang]! It’s the Soggy Bottom Boys!” The band goes on to finish the song which ends with thunderous applause.

It’s a famous scene that I had watched a couple dozen times over the years, but I had no idea what on earth it had to do with my old friend. I remembered that John had done some acting back in high school, so I wondered if maybe he had been an extra in that scene.

Such a possibility needed investigating, so I pulled up the video and started watching the scene again. I slowed it down pressing play and pause repeatedly, studying each face in the crowd until I had gone through the whole thing. But I found nothing. So, I tried it again and still found nothing. The third time I watched it was when I finally saw it.

John Hicks -story by funny keynote speaker Charles MarshallThat redneck in the back of the room is none other than my old  buddy/roommate/bandmate, John Hicks.

But I had never seen him in that movie until that point. Why was it that I missed him? Did I make the point that John and I were pretty good friends? Did I mention I was very familiar with the movie? Then why didn’t I notice him?

The reason I didn’t see him was because I wasn’t looking for him.

If you don’t know what your vision is—where you want to go, what you want your life to look like—you’re taking a horrible risk. If you don’t know your destination, how will you know where to steer? By what means will you know how to make the hundreds of decisions needed along the way? And how will you recognize it when you’re close? Are you going to leave it to luck?

Investing the time to clearly define your “why” and “where” will save you truckloads of heartache, frustration, and grief. Without exception, every successful business that I know, every healthy person, every thriving relationship has begun with a strong vision.

Do you know your vision for your life—your marriage, your career, your finances, your business? If not, maybe it’s time to start writing your script.

Where is the man who will do the right thing, no matter what the cost?Integrity is doing the right thing when you don’t have to—when no one else is looking or will ever know—when there will be no congratulations or recognition for having done so.

Where is the man who will do the right thing, no matter what the cost? Is there anyone who will act in integrity even if it means losing a job or an important business deal? Where is the woman who would be willing to act in openness and honesty if she knew it meant losing a significant relationship or a large sum of money? Are there still people in this world who would sacrifice their pride, relationships, or profit in order to maintain their integrity? Are you such a person?

Integrity is a foreign concept to the fairy-tale thinker. He will always compromise his ethics today, believing he will make everything right when his ship finally comes in. Doing so, he amasses a tremendous integrity debit that he will someday have to pay. One day his reputation will catch up with him and prevent the success he hopes to encounter. Fairy-tale thinkers hope their omission of doing the right thing will be overlooked or forgotten by those they wrong. They try to quickly put their fault out of their minds and like to think everyone else has done the same.

I couldn’t find one of my old bottles of prescription pills the other day, so I asked my wife if she knew what happened to them. She told me that she had thrown them away. When I asked her why on earth she would do such a thing, she told me she had gotten rid of them because the expiration date had passed.

That’s right. Just because the expiration date had passed. Have you ever heard of such a ridiculous thing in your whole life?

I tried explaining to her that there is nothing magical about the expiration date on a medicine bottle. It’s just a date. If the expiration date on the bottle is July 26, the pills don’t magically transform into cyanide on July 27, do they?

Bad Medicine Article by Charles MarshallNo, I believe a medicine bottle expiration date is just like a speed limit sign—they have to put it there but nobody expects you to actually pay attention to it.

That’s the way it’s always been in my family. I remember my mom was injured back in 1982 and the doctor prescribed some pain medication for her. She wound up not using all the medication, so she left the rest of the pills to me in her will. In my family, it’s not just a medicine bottle. It’s a family heirloom.

And one day, God willing, I hope to pass on all my old medicine bottles to my kids. It’s the right thing to do.

But why on earth would anyone throw away good medicine? It’s like money in the bank. One might suggest that, if I’m hurt, I should go to the doctor, get a new prescription, and then go get another bottle of pills from the pharmacy. I think that’s a great idea and I’ll do just that, but in the meantime, I’ll be in less pain because I’ll be taking Mom’s 1982 pain pills.

Yes, there is a slight chance that taking old medicine can result in a sudden and horrific death. But I ask you, what is more scary: Rolling around on the floor in unimaginable pain or taking an old pain pill and accidentally dying?

Well, the obvious answer would be first rolling around on the floor in unimaginable pain and then dying from taking an old pain pill. But you have to remember, there are worse fates. You could roll around on the floor in pain and then accidentally die while listening to Katy Perry. Now that would be tragic.

But let me put it another way. Let’s say you’ve accidentally fallen out of a tree and managed to injure yourself in a truly Guinness Book of World Records fashion. Now you’re lying on your back staring up at the tree, hating nature in general, and that tree in particular.

It’s at this precise moment that you think of the pain pills from your accident 12 years ago and long for them with a passion worthy of a 1980s power ballad.

And trust me, when you’re out in the yard, screaming for your family-heirloom pain medication, that is not the time you are going to want to hear your spouse telling you those pills were thrown out because the expiration date had passed.

So, whatever became of our household medicine dispute, you ask? Well, let me just say my wife caved and I won the argument. That is to say that I hid all my pills in a shoebox in the closet.

Hey, I gotta protect the kids’ inheritance, right?

Deep within you, buried far down in your soul, is an iron will, a piece of steel that you can access anytime you reach deep enough. It will lend you the strength to persist until you are victorious.

Harden your will. Strengthen your resolve. Put one foot in front of the other until you have conquered.

Courage? Yes, it can be defined as the hero jumping into the fray against overwhelming odds, but more often it’s the widowed mother working two jobs to care for her children. It’s the foster-parents caring for children from troubled homes. It’s the student putting herself through school by working part-time jobs. It’s the couple attending counseling for years to mend a troubled marriage. It’s a policeman patrolling his beat day after day. It’s the entrepreneur working eighty- or ninety-hour weeks for years in order to provide for his family.

Courage is never the absence of fear, but doing one’s duty in the face of fear marching on resolutely, persisting in one’s responsibility, without regard to one’s own well-being.
