Make your own traditional cold process soap with Bean & Boy in our studio. These are four-hour-long classes and typically run from 2 – 6pm on Sundays. They cost £78 per ticket, and you get everything you need to make two totally different soaps using all-natural vegan ingredients and high quality essential oils, plus recipes to take home. Classes are small, which means that you get plenty of one-to-one tuition and have a comfortable, creative space to explore soapmaking techniques and develop skills. These are shorter classes where you will learn to make one type of soap in a friendly class environment in the lovely Create98 studios. Margaret Raymond Florist: This is our own retail shop, and we run longer and more involved classes here for beginners and more advanced soapmakers. “Can I use soap on my face?”

The short answer is, yes. Soap can be used all over the body although shouldn’t be applied to mucous membranes.

And yes, natural soap does still sting when you get it in your eyes but it should sting less than a product with added chemicals. Surfactants, such as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), cause the worst of the stinging so choosing a soap without added surfactants will help reduce the stinging should you get some suds in your eyes but we don’t recommend trying it out either way.

Consideration should be given to whether you have sensitive skin or not when choosing a soap product to use whether on your face or any other part of your body. If you have sensitive skin, maybe a gentler and moisturizing bar is a better choice. Consider products which have little or no fragrance or exfoliating ingredients which can irritate your skin.

For a cosmetic product to be marketed as being safe for a baby it needs to be assessed against stricter requirements in order to be certified in accordance with UK and EU cosmetic regulations. For particularly sensitive skin an appropriately certified soap with no added fragrances or botanicals, such as our own Avocado and Shea Butter and Baby Soap, would be a good starting point to try.

“What’s the difference between natural liquid soap and natural bar soap? And why don’t you make liquid soap?”

Well. One is a liquid and the other is a solid

Seriously though, there isn’t much difference at a basic level. In most cases natural liquid soap is made with Potassium Hydroxide and bar soap is made with Sodium Hydroxide. For the liquid soap to remain liquid it needs to have more water in the final product.

Bacteria and viruses need to have water to survive and grow. As liquid soap has a sufficient level of residual water there is an increased risk of bad stuff growing in the soap. This can be overcome with the use of a preservative, however this comes with it’s own downsides as a preservative can’t determine whether a bacteria is good or bad and therefore kills all of them. The most common preservatives are also usually made very harsh chemicals, including formaldehyde. There are some natural options but these will still comprise alcohol, salt and other components which are not good for sensitive skin.

There can be a very low risk of initial introduction of bacteria or viruses during production and packaging if very strict controls are followed and appropriate packaging is used. However the risk of bacteria and viruses being introduced increases through use. Liquid soap also needs to be packaged in a container which is suitable to hold a liquid, which kind of goes without saying.

There are two main reasons we don’t make liquid soap.

The first is due to the need to have a preservative. We started making soap due a family need to make soap that is kind to sensitive skin. As even natural preservatives would still aggravate sensitive skin we have decided it’s not in line with what Bean and Boy is known and recognized for.

The second reason is due to packaging. The brand has an eco-conscious ethos and the only viable option for commercially sold soap would be a plastic bottle. This just isn’t an option for us. Glass is a potential solution, but practically isn’t safe for use in the bath or shower where it could be dropped and break.
Soap which uses chemical preservatives also should be introduced into the waterways, such as when used on houseboats, boats or in any other situation where the ‘dirty’ water can go straight into the environment.

“So how does soap work?”

To answer this lets first clarify what soap technically is. Not all products that appear to be soap, or are commonly referred to as a bar of soap are in fact, soap.

To be called soap, the product must be comprised mainly of alkali salts of fatty acids which are formed when fats or oils are combined with an alkali, such as sodium hydroxide/lye. The alkali breaks down the fats or oils and turns it into a solid bar of soap. When properly made no sodium hydroxide is left after the chemical reaction. This is why it’s important to use certified soap as it’s formulation is reviewed to make sure it’s safe. There are very strict laws in the UK and Europe around this.

If the “soap” is not made this way and isn’t made up of slightly alkali salts, then it’s a detergent and not soap. Essentially the cleaning action is usually performed by added chemicals.

So how does real soap work?

The chemistry behind it comes down to the make up of the soap molecules. One end is a polar salt and the other end is a nonpolar fatty acid or hydrocarbon. The polar salt is hydrophilic, or attracted to water. While the nonpolar fatty acid is hydrophobic, or repelled by water but importantly is attracted to fat or oils.

When you wash your hands or anything else for that matter with soap, the soap particles attach to both the water and oils and lift them away from the surface. Whether your skin or a dirty plate…

As already mentioned, real soap is slightly alkali which creates a temporary environment which is not very nice place for bacteria and viruses. Once washed off our skin, it returns to normal which is slightly acidic and full of good bacteria which helps our bodies to naturally fend off the bad bacteria.

Happy new year folks! It has been a bit of a whirlwind, although I think that 2022 was a whirlwind in itself so it didn’t surprise me at all. We had a lovely break from our shop over the festive period (although we popped in every day to dispatch orders), and now we’re back to embrace the creative energy and challenges that January brings. Our shop is open again 6 days a week, Monday to Saturday 9 – 5.

I love January. It’s such a good time to get rid of the old and embrace new ideas and new beginnings. It is always a good time to start something new – a new creative challenge or maybe a new friendship? In our case, we’ve got a bunch of new soaps (always a good thing!), and a whole lot of new collaborations. We have joint projects launching with an absolutely incredible artisanal candle maker in London – Danilo, from Stanza Artigiana (have a look at this link here where we did a little Instagram Live with him over the holidays and spoke about exciting things to come). We also have some exciting things going on with an interior designer and events coordinator which are totally new projects for us but we are here for it!

Another part of starting new things is getting rid of the old and dated ideas and inventory. When we took over the shop a few years ago, we inherited 57 years worth of small, independent business history. The shop is a florist, so it came with bizarre and unusual floristry gubbins from 1966 that isn’t used today at all, but we’re loathe to throw away because it could be used somehow rather than go to landfill. This year, though, I’m ready. I’ve got a list of charities that accept unusual goodies to experiment with and create art with, and I’ve connected with a local re-use and repurpose group who are READY to get elbows-deep in our dusty boxes and root around. We’re going to have a really thorough sort to our back storage area so that we we can repurpose it in a teaching workshop environment that is better suited to larger classes, so that’s really exciting and definitely an achievable goal. I’ve got to admit that some of it gives me the heebie jeebies so it’ll be good to have a few extra hands helping sort through it all! I’m going to start next week and will be sharing the most interesting finds – and some of the worst! – on instagram as I go so follow along with me on our shop account (here). We’re also planning on retiring some of our older soaps which feels like a sad thing to do, but they will make way for all the new ones. Hmm. The good thing is that we still hold the certification and safety assessment for all of them, and we’re always happy to make on demand so gone isn’t gone forever… just for now.

While I’ve got workshops in mind – we are, as usual, teaching at the fabulous Create98 all year round with our fast and fun introduction to soapmaking workshop. This class is really suited for absolute beginners who want to experiment with soapmaking and want to have a quick introduction. It’s a great price, and a great class in a fabulous venue. Christine and her team at Create98 are full of creative energy and there’s so much to explore and discover, it’s definitely worth popping in. Sending you a sunshiney hello as we wave goodbye to the summer holidays! Only three days left until school starts again, which I can hardly believe. I’ve taken a much-needed social media break over the summer because, as much as I am a soapmaker and a business owner, I’m also a mum and a daughter and a wife. I think having small children gives us the perfect excuse to reign things in a little and focus on sending out your lovely orders, making soaps, and getting things all ship-shape for the craziness of the festive season that is heading our way shortly!

As a by-the-by, I was also on BBC Radio again. This time I chatted to the lovely Ian Wyatt (he is up in that big pic up there at the beginning of this blog post) who was talking all things bathroom in light of Johnson & Johnson stopping production of their talcum powder in favour of using a cornstarch-based recipe instead. He was looking back through the shared communal history of remembered bathrooms and thinking about things that we used to have that have now – perhaps – been forgotten. And can you believe soap bars was one of them?! Well, I suppose I can believe it given the number of liquid handsoaps and hand sanitisers you see out in the wild, and maybe we are a little spoilt with our soap bars here at Bean & Boy HQ where we get all the tester bars to use.

Some of the other things people mentioned were coal tar soap (which has been banned in the UK since 2005), knitted toilet paper covers in the shape of dolls, and outside loos. Brrr. I thought I might knit up a loo roll cosy as a bit of fun – here are some I found online (click to see their sources):

The chat with Ian really got me thinking about how we make soap in the way that it has been made for tens of thousands of years, and I wonder what else has been lost in that time? I think it is a great research project to get stuck into! I’d also like to take opportunity to send a HUGE THANK YOU to the calls, emails and shop visits we’ve got from everyone who heard me on the radio waxing lyrical about soap bars and my passion for handmade beauty – you’re all amazing, and I’ve been thrilled to meet you, hear your stories, and chat about potential new scents.

Now that summer is winding down and it is officially autumn (2nd of September already!). I’ve hauled out the candle-making supplies and our giant pumpkin soap mould. Our plan is to have a giant pumpkin-shaped soap in the shop that you can slice up and pay per weight which is a bit of fun! I’ve got a bunch of candles curing, new soaps made and ready to package, and fun new products coming in to the shop every week ahead of Christmas so I’m officially ready for fall.

On the topic of new soaps… we’ve kept that a bit quiet, but we have 8 new soaps certified and ready to be made! I’m going to hold some back for later in the year as they’re definitely summer-ier smells, but this Christmas you can expect at least four new fabulously winter scents that will be your new favourites, I’m sure.

We’re also scheduling in lots of new soapmaking workshops as there’s been such a high demand. I’m thrilled to see that so many people are interested in making their own soaps and getting stuck into this age-old tradition. Check our workshops page regularly for new dates. If you’ve got a few friends that want to join you for an end-of-year treat, get in touch – we keep our classes small, and I can fit you in after our shop is closed, or on the weekends for a private class.

We are pretty excited to be working with Green Love Southend which is a project happening over the course of the next month here in the City of Southend-on-Sea, Essex.

As part of the REMeDY project – aiming to deliver low-cost low-carbon energy solutions through an innovative consortium of businesses and Southend Borough Council – Green Love Southend is encouraging residents, businesses and organisations to share and learn what they can do together to put Southend on the path to net zero.

We have joined up because of our commitment to doing more to use less and the workshops, forums and other avenues provide a fresh and interesting perspective as well as a place to share our opinions, voice our concerns, and learn more about what else we can be doing. It’s been great attending the workshops and speaking up, as well as meeting with other great businesses like our friends Pear & Potato who are changing the way we see fruit and veggies.

So what does this mean for you?

My goodness me, where has the time gone? January has been a complete whirlwind of activity here as we swirl, mix, and prepare soaps for lots of new shops (we’ll be updating our wholesale page with more information on where you can find our soaps soon) and giving our shop a little makeover.

I’ve also encountered many, many technical gremlins grrr so I’ve lost some of my data, most of my mailing list, and the blog posts from the last six months – can you believe it?! My emails have gone completely wonky donkey (mother of small children here, obviously) but we’re finally overcoming it all and have restored normality as far as possible. I’m incredibly grateful to my lovely team who have been so supportive in keeping things running smoothly while I furiously tread water behind the scenes.

News this month –

• I’ll be updating our workshop and classes page shortly with all of the classes we’re running this quarter both at our shop and at the lovely Create98 which is a local art studio offering lots of different hands-on workshops.
• We have a bunch of new soaps coming, I’m just waiting on the cosmetic safety assessments to come back and then we’re all systems go.
• We have been working hard on Faire, a wholesale marketplace type of website which connects us to shops all over the world. We have welcomed quite a few new stockists and have forged some brilliant connections for custom soap requests and other interesting projects.
• Last month, I created SOAP COAL for a pitch for a really exciting shop in London. Lumps of charcoal soap to go in Christmas stockings for those who are more on the naughty list than on the nice one. This year we’re going to be making some wiggly worm soaps for a gross gift idea for them. Not something I think we’d stock ourselves but it has got me thinking about fun soap ideas for us!
• Lots of lovely new handmade gifts in our shop and some coming to etsy next week. We are making so many cotton bamboo scrubbies at the moment, they’re available in lots of different designs and if you don’t see what you want, please ask! We have lots and it isn’t always viable to list them all online. They are one of our most popular gift lines so stock moves really quickly, and they’re a great eco swap if you’re trying to lessen your carbon footprint and environmental impact.
• We’re getting ready for Valentine’s Day in the shop. It’s pretty exciting and lots of fun, so expect lots of pictures!

We’re so excited that it has been confirmed that we’re able to reopen our shop on April 12th. Here’s a map to our shop Margaret Raymond Florist in case you haven’t been by to visit yet:

It’s on Hamlet Court Road, which is currently in the process of being considered as a Conservation Area – it’s quite amazing to hear more about the history of the area, and what incredible buildings once stood on this remarkable road leading up to the Hamlet Court Manor. It doesn’t look like it now, as many of the original features have been replaced by modernisation and of course some of the most important landmarks – such as the old Queen’s Hotel – are now long gone after being lost to fire, but the history of the area is embedded in the landscape and it’s such an honour to be a part of it.

Margaret Raymond Florist itself was established in 1966 and we’re very proud to be able to carry on its legacy, with a few extra soap bubbles of course! We have an amazing set of florists working with us, and we’re slowly changing the shop into a more soap- and home-focussed interiors area, encouraging visitors to stop and smell the rose-scented soaps and enjoy a chat while they’re picking up their blooms. Bean and Boy customers will be surrounded by plants and beautiful makes from local artisans too, creating a wholesale and happy space. Now that we’re able to reopen, we can start working on that vision again and we can’t wait to share it with you all.
