]]>Learning to scrape an oboe reed is often the most intimidating part of becoming an oboist. Many students struggle with knowing where to remove cane and how deep to go. By visualizing the blank reed as a series of distinct, proportional sections, you can move away from guesswork and start building a professional-grade oboe reed with confidence.

While every cane is unique, you can use these three visual markers to maintain the correct proportions for a responsive reed:
Line 1 (Bottom of the Heart): Place this halfway between the thread and the tip. This serves as the foundation for your heart scrape.
Line 2 (Back of the Blend): Mark this halfway between Line 1 and the tip. This defines the back of your blend area.
Line 3 (The Tip Area): Place this between Line 2 and the tip. This is where your thinnest cane will reside.
The golden rule of oboe reed-making is the taper: your reed must be the thinnest at the very tip and become progressively thicker as you move toward the heart. Mastering this gradient is the most important skill for achieving consistent vibration and tone.
Follow these stages to build your blank systematically:
Define the Tip: Start by scraping back to Line 3. Ensure you remove the bark (epidermis) and the milky-colored cortical parenchyma layer.
Define the Blend: Once the tip is clear, extend your scrape to Line 2. Remember to carry your strokes all the way off the tip of the blank—never stop in the middle of a stroke.
Define the Heart: Finally, lengthen your scrape up to Line 1. Maintaining a smooth transition here is vital for a responsive reed.
Allow your cane to rest. I strongly advise letting your reed dry completely after these initial steps. Returning to your reed a day or two later allows the internal stresses of the cane to stabilize, which leads to a more stable, longer-lasting, and better-playing instrument.

]]>For every oboe player, the journey from musician to craftsman begins at the tying block. Tying—or binding—your own reeds can feel incredibly daunting at first. You are managing wet cane, high-tension nylon thread, a brass staple, and a mandrel, all while trying to maintain precision down to the millimeter.
If you’ve ever wound up with a pile of split cane or a reed that leaks like a sieve, you aren’t alone. The secret to mastering this process isn’t just manual dexterity; it’s understanding the mechanical relationship between the cane and the brass tube.
Here is a comprehensive, easy-to-follow breakdown perfect for keeping open on your workbench.
Before you touch a spool of thread, your materials need to be perfectly prepped. Shortcuts here will ruin the reed before you even begin wrapping.
Take your soaked cane and fold it precisely over your thumb or a folding knife. Slip the bottom tabs of the cane over the top of the brass staple. Slide the staple onto your mandrel so you have a solid, steady grip.
This is where patience pays off. Look down the sides of the reed to make sure the two blades are perfectly parallel and aligned—this prevents “slippage” where one blade shifts left or right. Use a ruler to set your total starting length. For standard staples, you are aiming for a total length of 72mm to 73mm from the very bottom of the cork to the tip of the cane.
Hold the cane firmly against the staple with your non-dominant hand. Take your thread and wrap it around the cane just below the top of the staple. Make a simple crossover knot to anchor it. Keep a firm grip on the thread to maintain high tension from this moment forward.
Begin wrapping upward toward the ears of the cane, keeping each rotation of the thread perfectly flush against the last.
The Golden Rule: You must stop wrapping exactly at the top edge of the internal brass staple.
If you tie even a hair past the brass, you will “choke” the reed, sealing the sides together and ruining its opening. If you tie too low, the reed will leak air from the sides, and it won’t speak properly in the low register. Finding this exact boundary line is the hallmark of a great reed maker.
Once you hit that sweet spot at the top of the brass, reverse direction. Wrap back down over your initial threads to lock them in place. Finish the reed with three or four half-hitch knots (casting off) at the base of the cane to secure it completely. Trim the excess thread cleanly with a sharp knife or razor.

]]>I recently had the opportunity to try a couple of the new Fox-Laubin oboes. I have been wondering about these instruments since I saw the release on the Fox website months ago. Being a long-time fan of everything Laubin since I was twelve years old, I wanted to get my hands on one of these new oboes. My first teacher played on Laubin oboes and I knew the name from an early age. They have always been the gold standard of oboe within my mind and for good reason.
I have a long and wonderful relationship with Fox products as well. I grew up playing a Fox Renard 330 intermediate oboe from the time I was 14 until well into my third year of college. The 330 is the best intermediate oboe on the market in my opinion. Whenever I am asked by band directors or students what they should purchase I without hesitation advise them to purchase Fox 330s. They sound good, have a good scale, are very durable and hold a very high resale value.
I am a total “gearhead” when it comes to oboe related products. When presented with the question “What would you do if you were rich” my answer is, exactly what I do now, but I would have hundreds of oboes and reed making machines, ohh and I would probably buy a new car. I love trying new toys and I like to see what new developments are happening in the oboe world in terms of instrument design or reed making tools. When two of the great U.S oboe makers came together in collaboration I knew I wanted to see and hear what was happening.
I was very excited to hear that two of the companies with the greatest influence on my oboe education were going to collaborate on a project together. I wanted to know a bit more about this instrument, and I wanted to try the Fox-Laubin oboe myself. I reached out to Fox in an attempt to have them send me an instrument to try and review. Sarah at Fox and Alex Laubin worked with me to try the oboes and share my thoughts with the oboe community. I am grateful for the generosity of time and resources provided by both companies.
I am sure most oboists will be familiar with both Laubin and Fox. They have both been making high quality products for the better part of a century. For anyone new to either maker let me share a little history and my thoughts about the individual makers.
“The story of A. Laubin, Inc. began in 1931 when Alfred Laubin, a professional oboist and instrument repairman, dissatisfied with the quality of professional oboes available at the time, built his first oboe. After several attempts, Mr. Laubin was able to make an oboe which met the demands of his own playing career.
The intonation and reliability of his instruments impressed his professional oboist friends, many of whom began requesting and playing his oboes.
By the 1950’s, oboe-making had become a full-time occupation, and more musicians had the opportunity to own Laubin instruments. The two most important oboe makers in the united states historically are Loree and Laubin. Loree became the choice instrument for many oboists due to the influence of Marcel Tabuteau. He brought the American school of oboe playing to the United states and along with it the Loree oboe. Loree was prominent within most professional orchestras until Laubin started making oboes to compete with the French maker. I have heard and read on several occasions that until recently (1990’s or so) it was said that 80% of American players used Loree instruments, and the 15% played on Laubin oboes . Laubin’s smaller market share being limited to their output of only a few instruments being produced every year.
I currently play a rosewood Laubin made in 1985. The instrument I play is actually the first oboe I ever heard played in live performance. It was my teacher, Tamara Field’s instrument, she gave it to me as a gift several years ago. “Rosie” as it has been named, was the instrument that brought a tear to my eye and made me understand that I was going to be an oboist.
The Laubin oboes I have tried over the years have a certain difficult to describe characteristic within the sound. The sound is complex and resonant within the whole overtone spectrum. To my ears I describe the quality like this; Laubin oboes do not filter overtones out of the sound, which I find to be the case with some other makers, which I feel leaves a stuffy feel and sound. The Laubin oboes I have tried seem to resonate within the core and center of the sound not filtering out undesired sound but amplifying the desired sounds. The oboe unifies the whole overtone spectrum within the sound into one homogeneous sound. The sound has more dimensions to it than simply “dark” or “bright” two terms I attempt to avoid when I describe sound. Where I would describe some sounds to be flat or two-dimensional in terms of depth of sound, Laubin oboes always seem to have a third dimension in the sound that is difficult to describe in words. This is an ill-articulated description of my own perception of the sound I hear, every oboist may hear and describe it differently.
The other characteristic I have always admired in Laubin oboes is the is not just the sound and even scale, but the connection between notes. How fluidly an instrument connects one note to the next, is a quality I always listen for whenever I am trying any oboe. I find Laubin oboes have a very fluid connection from one note to the next. I understand this quality has a lot to do with with the undercutting of the tone-holes and bore design in the production of the instruments.

I will admit that I have not played on too many professional Fox oboes. I did try the new Sayen professional oboe a couple years ago and I was very happy with the quality. I found them to have a rich sound, be very comfortable in the hands, and visually appealing with their gold posts. I was trying them at the University of Massachusetts double reed day, so I did not have a chance to give them the full run down. I recently had a short conversation with Pedro Diaz about the Sayen oboe and he said “ The tone is robust, even, the scale is easy. It has just the right amount of resistance for me.”
I took a trip to the Laubin shop recently with Basil Reeve and had an opportunity to talk about the Fox-Laubin oboes with Paul and Alex Laubin. Alex told me a little about the collaboration between the two makers. The initial woodwork and keywork are done by Fox. The Oboes sent to Laubin have a smaller bore than a finished oboe . The instruments have the tradition cork and skin pads that all Laubin oboes are made with. Unlike the standard Laubin oboes, the Fox-Laubin has a third octave key, a feature many oboists have come to expect from elite level instruments.
Laubin then finishes the bore and tone holes with their tools and machines, a process that takes many hours of precise work. The result is an instrument that feels and looks like a professional Fox oboe, but has a sound and playing quality more similar to the Laubin oboe.
There were not any finished Fox-Laubin oboes at the Laubin shop when I visited , but Alex kindly agreed to send me a couple upon completion in a few weeks. 6 weeks later I would receive the instruments for trial.
I heard the knock on my door, signaling the arrival of my new toys for the next week. I order and receive supplies for my reed making business nearly every day, but I still get excited opening those packages up and pulling out the contents. I sometimes joke that the only reason I make oboe reeds professionally is to support my oboe reed making habit. Sometimes I feel as though I play the oboe to support my oboe reed making habit, I am not sure my priorities are straight. I was looking forward to receiving this package from Laubin all day and I quickly skipped into my home and opened it up.
I pulled the two cases out from the sea of packing peanuts and examined the sleek french style cases. I have seen the Fox-Laubin logo several times up to this point, but it still surprises me to see the two companies marked as one on the case cover. There is a fresh turkey feather nestled between the case and case cover, a tool Paul Laubin swears by in the cleaning of oboes.
I open the cases to see a couple shiny brand new oboes in front of me. The fresh silver keywork against an ebony and red back drop is a beautiful sight to my eyes. I can’t help but think “ahhh pretty”. I had a few colleagues over to try the oboes over the next week and their reactions were similar. What is it about those new, untouched keys that are so visually appealing, Something lodged within our psyches saying “shiny is goooood”.
The oboes rise from their slumber to play a few minutes of long tones before I need to leave to teach a lesson. I bring one of the oboes with me. I arrive at my student’s house and rush inside to have him try my new toy. I explain why I have the instrument and let him try it. He plays a few notes and expresses that he likes it. I sit and listen for a couple minutes and get a sense of the resonance as an observer.
This student is an advanced high schooler and he currently plays on a Fox 330. He plays beautifully on that instrument. We talk a bit about the instrument and compare it to his oboe. He expressed that it feels very similar to his ergonomically, but is heavier due to the grenadilla wood body. I try both oboes and agree that that do feel very similar, which I would have expected since the keywork is made by the same maker. I find both oboes to be very comfortable to play ergonomically. There is not too much reach for the pinkies, a characteristic that can vary a lot between different oboes.
The student asks about the third octave key, and I explain that it is an option that is standard on most professional oboes and is expected by many oboists .The recent Fox Renard 330 oboes also include a third octave key but his does not. I explain to him that Laubin does not usually install a third octave key due to the impact it has on the bore of the instrument, but in this collaborative effort they agreed to include it since it is something many oboists expect. I pry the oboe from his hands, we finish the lesson and I return home
I play the other instrument at home and leave them both for the next day. Over the next week I play both instruments for small amounts of time each day, listening and evaluating them against my own taste, but also what I might expect from the two makers.
I also made a few reeds for each instrument, trying to figure out what type of oboe reed works best for these specific instruments. The tone of both instruments was very rich, complex and beautiful. I would describe them to have the quality of depth in the sound I hear within the other Laubin oboes I have tried. Neither of the Fox-Laubin oboes I tried felt stuffy or had a “dead” sound. The sound was even and balanced within all octaves. I thought the overtones blended nicely allowing a lot of flexibility in tone color.
Both instruments played right at pitch for the reeds I use on my Laubin and Loree oboes. I did not need to adjust my reeds for the overall pitch of the instruments.
When I first received and tried the instruments there were a few notes that did not seem to “lock in” in terms of the scale with my reeds. The scale observations are to be expected to some extent with any variation in oboe and reed. Over the week I made a few different reeds for the instruments and I was able to find a solution with just reeds. The reeds I settled on were a bit thinner on the side integration of the tip to heart with slightly less taken from just behind the heart an area I like to really dig out for depth of tone. This is a reference to my own reed making so your results may vary. There are likely as many ways to a similar outcome as there are oboists.
As I reflect on the oboes and how they felt I think I would try using a shape with slightly narrower throat and more flare at the tip. A Pfieffer/Mack shape comes to mind… don’t mind me, I am thinking out loud.. well in text.
The keywork is very comfortable. I would describe it as having a slightly lower profile than Laubin oboes, meaning the keys feel slightly closer to the body of the instrument. This a professional level oboe with all trill, third octave and alternate keywork (no left C# just in case you were wondering). The Grenadilla wood was very smooth and tightly grained.
I had no problem phrasing from one note to the next with either oboe. The oboes allowed subtlety of phrasing and smooth core sound connection between notes. The low profile keywork adds a great feeling of connection with the sound for me. Smooth fingers and keys equal smooth sound within my mind.
I have my theories that this quality has to do with the undercutting of the tone holes bore design and the skin pads. I feel the skin pads may offer slightly more cushion in contact which transfers into the sound quality. I am hypothesizing here and may be outrageously wrong. I am interested in experimenting on my Loree oboe (blasphemy?!?)
I think these oboes are worth a look for anyone in the market for a new professional level oboe. They are expertly made inside and out. With a price tag under $7000 they are slightly more affordable than some other makes of professional level oboes.
Laubin oboes currently have an 8-10 year wait and cost over $12,000 each. I have been on the list for a few years now and am currently looking for a buyer for one of my kidneys on the black market for the time when my name finally comes up. These instruments will provide a great upgrade to any student playing on the intermediate Fox Renard instruments. They feel very similar ergonomically and will provide a very smooth transition.

]]>Recently, I had a brief interaction with a young oboist on the IDRS Facebook page about feeling discomfort while playing the oboe. The conversation went into the topic of breath support and how to breathe properly into the oboe. I spend a lot of time thinking about this topic since it has been a rather tough lesson for me to learn. I work very hard to find proper breathing and support strategies. I attribute improper breathing and air support to a lot of the challenges I had early on in my playing. it is something that must be felt to understand. It is one of those concepts that a teacher may try to explain for years, but the student will not understand until they find the correct sensation. Perhaps I am projecting my own difficulties onto others, and this is not such a challenge for other oboists. I hope the oboists struggling with support and tension might find my perspective helpful.
The oboe has been described as “the ill winded instrument that no one blows well.” I take this to refer to the somewhat counter-intuitive process of supporting without overblowing. I find it helpful to separate the concept of breath support from the air itself. The support controls the air but it is not the air. The support is the bodily sensations and muscles that pressurize the air within the system. I like to relate breath support and air to an air compressor. The body system is not so different than an air compressor in function. The compressor pressurizes the air to a certain level within the air tank and it is released through a small valve. The oboe player pressurizes the air similarly with their body and the air is released through a small valve, the lips, and the oboe reed.
Each system must pressurize the internal environment to a certain level to function optimally. The oboist must use their muscles to pressurize the air to the needed level. The support is the system within the body that creates the pressure. The air is affected by the support, however, I feel the two can and should be separated conceptually. Another way to say this is “you can still support even if you are not pushing air”. Find the sensation of support and the air will flow better.
A visual and mental representation of breath support I like to use is a hand squeezing a balloon ( courtesy of my mentor Fredric Cohen). Imagine a balloon is inflated but not tied. When the nozzle of the balloon is released the air will move out of it at a certain speed. When the hand is placed on the bottom of the balloon and gently squeezes the air pressure within the balloon increases and causes the air to escape at a faster speed. Supporting can be compared to the hand on the balloon, we use our bodies to created more air pressure within the lungs.
This visual may help you to understand the mental concept, but we must find the sensation to truly understand support. That must be discovered independently for each of us. I will offer my suggestions as to how we can feel proper support later in this article.
I find that when people assume support and air volume are the same things they are more likely to overblow and try to put too much volume of air through the reed. The reed will only take a small amount of air volume since it is so small. Overblowing often happens when support is assumed to be the same thing as the volume of air being used. “Take a big breath and blow” encourages students to blow a lot of air through the oboe reed and over time associates that large volume to be the same thing as the sensation of support. I don’t necessarily disagree with teaching students to feel support by doing this when first playing, but it is beneficial to separate the two concepts even in the beginning. Overblowing happens when the support is conceptually and sensationally attached to the amount of air being used. The oboe takes a lot of support to play properly (high air pressure), but it does not take much air volume. If the two concepts, Air volume, and support, are associated as the same thing you will likely overblow and create tension within the body.
I have converted to the “large breath” school of playing over the past year or so. Even while taking a large breath it is important to know that the reed is only going to take a small amount of air. A large breath can help increase the pressure at the oboist’s disposal, but a reed will only take the amount of air which it is made to take. Anything beyond that is wasted energy. When we take a large breath it is not with the intention of pushing all that air through the oboe reed, it is to create more control over the air pressure moving through the reed.
To summarize and clarify; Support is the system within the body that creates air pressure. When we pressurize the air within the body we are supporting the air. This is the broad definition I would like to give at this point. That is not to say that all support is good support. We can support with our chests, throats, and faces which may create the sound you want, but you will create tension within the body.
Whenever we raise the air pressure within the body system we are essentially supporting. The questions now are, where should we be creating the air support? Where should we feel it? what sensations should be associated with it ? How do I use breath support correctly?
I feel that correct air support has been a tough lesson for me to learn, I am still learning it after 20 years of playing. I suspect I will keep learning proper support for the next 30 years. It is difficult because there is no way to gain a deep understanding of support within the body until it is experienced by the oboist. I have read books on breathing, I spend hours a week meditating with my focus on my breath, and still feel I can improve my support and breathing habits. It is also a topic that I always feel I understand at whatever stage I am at, only to realize years later I could be doing a better, more efficient job. This is an area where we all need to be in tune with our own bodily sensations and work to make a beautiful sound without tension within the body.
I personally feel we must develop a conscious awareness of our breathing and should develop a series of questions to help us become more aware of good and bad practices.
The diaphragm is going to come up anytime anyone talks about air support. I am not going to talk too much about exactly how it works here, mostly because there are other sites with fancy pictures that may make a better introduction. Here is a video about the diaphragm that may be helpful to gain a basic understanding of the breathing and support process.
The area I feel the breath support should happen is in the abdominal area below the rib cage. I personally feel it as an inward and slightly upward push around the diaphragm area shown in the video. I often describe the closest sensation to be a cough right before it is released, though even that is not exactly correct. We use the muscles of the diaphragm to create air pressure to play the oboe. It seems like an easy concept, but it can be more difficult in practice because it is hard to know exactly what is happening inside our bodies. It can be difficult to feel what is happening internally within the body since we have fewer internal nerves than those focused externally.
The breath support should raise the air pressure within the lungs to match the amount of pressure the reed is made to take. The reed should suite the air of the oboist, but the oboist must also work to develop a breath support system that is strong. The reed is going to be slightly different for every oboist due to the human body, instrument, and style of playing, so the case can be made that the support will also change. My goal is not to say everyone should play on the same reeds and same set-up but to find what works best for you, the oboist, to create the music you want to express as effortlessly as possible. Perhaps that is an idealist way of thinking, but I find that to be my number 1 goal in oboe playing and reed making. The oboist needs to develop strong support that comfortably matches the air pressure needs of the oboe reed.
The wisdom I offer is this; if your body is working too hard and creating tensions anywhere you can benefit from rethinking your air support system and how you are creating the air pressure needed to play the oboe or rethinking your concepts of oboe playing and reed making. This may require changing your concept of what a great reed feels like, or it may require developing stronger breath support or both. I find the two usually change together slightly. Focusing on proper breath support and ease of tone will take time and focus, but is truly worth the effort if you hope to play expressively and freely with no tension.
Here is an exercise I use to demonstrate what I am hinting at above.
The oboe should not take a lot of air volume to play, but it will require a lot of air pressure. High pressure, low volume. Contemplate that idea.
My goal in this article is to encourage students to look at their own understanding of air support. I encourage you to really dig deep to understand if you could be breathing in a way that makes oboe playing a better experience. Do not just blow into the oboe, think, and feel what you are doing. Develop efficiency and comfort in your own playing, no one else will ever be able to give you that. Spend time with the exercise outlined above to get in tune with the internal sensations within the body. Conceptualize how the pressure is being created in the system and work towards efficiency. Find a reed that works well and feels comfortable.

]]>We oboists and double reed players, in general, must deal with temperamental reeds made from organic material. What works great one month may not work at all the next. These periods of frustration, commonly known to oboists as a reed making rut, are fairly natural but can be frustrating. Whether you are hacking off tips or dealing with leaking reeds, a reed making rut can be navigated by assessing the problem, addressing variables, and implementing a solution. While these ruts are expected, I find it more productive to think of them as a ‘maintenance issue.'”
I have come to analyze my own reed ruts in terms of three categories, or “The Three Ms,” if you like: Mental, Material, and Mechanical. A change in one of these variables can affect the reed-making process—sometimes in obvious ways, and sometimes more subtly. A reed-making rut may start in one area and move to another if we do not step back and look at what is happening within the process. By looking at each category and deciphering how it may be affecting the reed-making rut, we can hope to avoid or escape it without too many casualties, dead reeds, or wasted time.
Let me start by explaining what I mean by Mental, Material, and Mechanical.
These three qualities will often overlap. The materials used will be affected by the state of your mechanical tools. The more of the reed-making process we control, the more variables that can go wrong, but also the more ability we have to positively control them.
A reed maker gouging their own cane may run into problems with their own mechanical equipment and have no choice but to eliminate variables one at a time. Their gouging machine may be out of adjustment and creating inferior reeds without their knowledge. Every reed is working improperly due to the gouge, but the reed maker may not even recognize the problem is the gouger. Frustration may settle in within the psyche and create more problems beyond the initial problem. The mechanical status of the equipment used to make the reeds will affect the materials used to make the reeds, and the overall state of reed making may affect the mental state of the reed maker.

]]>An oboist recently wrote to me with some questions about shaper tip dimensions and what qualities different shapes affect. I watched my mind start chattering away about how the shaper tip affects different qualities of the oboe reed, and before I knew it I was writing a book via email to this oboe reed customer. I came back to a place of thinking “slow down Aaron” if this person is not familiar with oboe reed shapes and how they affect playing qualities within a double reed they likely need a simple answer. I gave them the standard “double reed width affects A,B, and C” and kept it to the qualities in themselves. I think about reeds and oboe a lot, perhaps to the point of having a problem, so I can forget the overall complexity of the subject for someone at a different stage.
This brief interaction got me thinking about reed width and that I need to get some ideas in print. I think that when talking about the reed width we are essentially talking about something correlating to the volume of the space within the reed. The wider the shape, the more volume of space within the reed if no other variables are changed.
We can also make a wide shape that plays very much like a more narrow shape but only after other variables compensated for the change in internal dimension. There are many variables in making double reeds, so as a general rule, what I am speaking about is a change in one variable at a time. This article is very much related to the shape of cane being used, but I think it is of some advantage to first understand why the double reed cane shape affects the reed’s playing qualities. Ultimatly I understand the reed’s shape to be a characteristic affecting the internal dimension of the double reed. The width of the shaper tipe will affect the volume of space within the reed.
I generally think of oboe reeds and double reeds in general as having two dimensions that should be considered. The external and the internal dimensions.
The astute reader may notice overall length of the double reed is something I include in both categories. I suppose I would put it into the “internal” category if I needed to choose.
This article will focus on the internal dimensions of double reeds. Hopefully, I can provide the student with some insight into what qualities the internal dimensions are going to affect.
I should disclaim to any bassoonists or other double reed player (bagpipe, shawm, Duduk, etcetera) that may come across this article that I am an oboist. I am making the case that all double reeds are going to show similarities due to my experience with the oboe family, and my limited knowledge about bassoon reeds. I welcome comments and the sharing of your own understanding in the comments. I will not be offended if I am deemed totally ignorant of my understanding of Bassoon or other double reeds. I do believe it will apply to all reed types, but do not take anything I say as absolute. I would bet that bassoonists likely have a better understanding of this topic than most oboists since y’all deal with adjusting wires reamers, and the internal shape more than oboists.
I have written about “The Big Three” qualities of oboe reed making in several other articles. The Big Three are Response, Resistance, and Intonation. I believe these are going to be relevant criteria to evaluate any double reed against. I stress in my overall philosophy that every oboist, and perhaps bassoonist too, needs to find the balance of these three qualities in their reeds and reed making. There is not one reed that is going to work for everyone, but we can all gain more awareness of how to grow as players by understanding how our reeds can be better by striving to find the balance that works for us. Finding the balance will allow the musician to make music without being limited to their tools, in this case the reed.
Everything I discuss is again to be treated as a variable which is changed without anything else being changed. It is not my point to say a reed should be A, B and C, but that if the internal dimension changes it will likely affect the reed in such a way.
The internal dimension of any double reed is going to affect the pitch of the reed. We can think of double reeds as a little instrument. The larger the space inside of an instrument (without changing other variables again) the lower the pitch is going to be. This can be thought of on a large scale as the difference between the tuba and the piccolo. A smaller internal dimension will have a higher pitch, a larger internal dimension will have a lower pitch.
When we have all the same variables and we change the internal dimension of the reed the pitch will also change slightly. Now this is not going to be the difference between a tuba and piccolo so the change is not drastic, but it is noticeable.
A wider shaped reed made exactly like a more narrow reed will play flatter. There are ways to adjust it to play higher, so it is not to say wide reeds will play flat, but we must compensate for the increase in internal volume in some way.That is either going to happen in the body by changing the air or in the reed itself. We can adjust the reed’s internal or external dimensions to compensate so we don’t need to change the internal bodily sensations.
I tend to define resistance as the amount of energy needed to make the reed vibrate and continue to vibrate. It is a transfer of energy from our bodies to the reed. The more resistant a reed is, the more energy we must transfer from our bodies to the reed to make it work.
The larger the internal dimension of the double reed the more air that will flow through the reed. The increase in air flow will drop the pressure within the body/instrument system and require the body to increase the pressure by exerting more energy.This energy increase can present itself as discomfort in the body if the player is not using proper support.
We should always remember that reeds vibrate to create sound, they vibrate when the pressure inside the system is high enough to make them vibrate. We can either adjust the energy we apply to them (more air pressure) or reduce the amount of energy that the reed needs to vibrate. This is a balancing game like everything else in reed making. We must be in tune with the bodily sensations, but also develop proper breathing and support habits. Developing a comfortable internal pressure system and balancing reeds to match that is the key as far as I am convinced.
You will notice that the first thing you will do while playing on a reed that is too resistant is to bite it with the embouchure. This is sometimes to the point of being unconscious, but it is like your body’s way of saying “ohh gheeze, close this reed down so I am not working so hard!”
When the internal dimension is too small it can lead to overblowing, which is when more pressure is created within the body system than the reed can accept. This will also lead to tension within the body. Find that balance, make life happy… mmmmm.
Response is a measurement of how easily the reed starts to vibrate. This is going to be the most difficult to express in terms of the internal dimension of the reed alone. Certain qualities of the internal dimensions of the reed will increase the responsiveness of a reed, where others will decrease it.
A wider tip opening is going to positively affect response in the lower registers of the instrument. A more narrow tip opening is going to positively affect response in the higher registers of the instrument. I tend to relate this to the vibrational frequencies of the pitch. Lower pitches vibrate at lower frequencies, so a reed that is wider will favor the lower frequencies. I believe this to also be why wider shaped reeds tend to favor the lower overtones within the sound. Those frequencies vibrate more easily with a wider reed, and less easily on a narrow reed. This is my own conjecture or intuition, call it what you like.
The height of the reed opening is going to affect the response in a different way. The higher the opening (distance between the two pieces of cane at the center) the less responsive the double reed will usually be. This does change when the reed becomes so closed that it will no longer speak. That is the point when the pressure within the body is too great and the external pressure in the mouth closes the reed.
We may then infer that a reed may become less responsive when the pressure within the body is greater than the reed needs to vibrate optimally. Someone may need a more resistant reed and so they like the resistance a more open reed allows them without overblowing. The same reed may close up for them if they were to try to adjust the internal dimension. They would be increasing the pressure in the body too much and the reed may no longer function properly for them.
I personally like to make my reeds have a fairly closed opening because I feel it gives the reeds more depth of tone, pitch stability, and greater response for my style of playing. I prefer to open up my embouchure and not have too much pressure on the reed. I change the width of the reed and not opening height for desired resistance, This way I am not trying to control the reed with my embouchure too much.
Resistance.
Intonation.
Response.

I am trying to provide students with a conceptual framework to think about double reeds and reed making. Essentially I aim to help interested readers to develop a vocabulary of “if, Then” statements, A logical approach to oboe reed making if you like.
Understanding the workings of double reeds is not an impossible task with some knowledge and curiosity. Nothing I write is a replacement for experience, but having some conceptual understandings may take away from some of the mystery of the elusive double reed.
A person may have flat, resistant and unresponsive reeds. The problem may have a very simple fix which is to adjust the internal dimension of the reed slightly. Many beginner and advanced oboe students would benefit from just experimenting with trying to adjust the internal dimensions of their reeds slightly. I wrote a short article on adjusting flat oboe reeds without any tools. The same concepts will hold true for any of the qualities affected by the internal dimensions of the double reed.
A more advanced reed maker may decide their reeds are too sharp for their needs and decide to change the shaper tip dimensions and not their air. They are matching the reed to their body and not trying to compensate for a reed. Having a holistic understanding of every variable will ultimatly lead to better reeds. Better reeds mean better music making, better music making means happy musicians, happy musicians mean happy people around the musicians, happy people means a better society… great reeds.. helping the world to be better one musician at a time. ]]>The ability for a musician to play in tune with other instrumentalists is an important ability no matter what level they are at. While many instruments can be adjusted to play better in tune by changing either the length of the instrument, or string tension, the oboe must be tuned initially with the reed, and then with slight adjustments of the player’s embouchure and reed placement. Learning to adjust oboe reed intonation is important, and not overly complicated as long as a conceptual framework is provided to understand the workings of oboe reeds and basic acoustics.
The oboe reed must be made to play in tune with the oboist’s embouchure, air usage, and specific instrument. Every oboe reed must be suited for the oboist, which is one reason why many professional oboists tend to make their own reeds. Other oboists of all levels adjust purchased reeds to suit their specific needs.
Intonation is one of the qualities in an oboe reed that I have come to call “The Big Three“. “The Big Three” are intonation, response, and resistance. I see these three qualities as the most important qualities to evaluate in any oboe reed. Understanding how to evaluate and adjust these qualities in the oboe reed will give the oboist far more control over their reed making and performance.

Let me define oboe reed intonation as;
I do not subscribe to the idea that there is one way to make an oboe reed, or that one school of thought in oboe playing is correct. The intonation of a reed is, therefore dependent on factors outside of the reed itself. A reed may play well in tune for one oboist, but out of tune for the next. I see the variables below affecting the oboist’s preference in an oboe reed’s pitch level. These can include but are not limited to;
An oboist with a very tight embouchure may play sharp on reeds that another oboist would prefer. Their intonation would also depend on the air they use and other variables on the list. Oboe playing and reed making is a dynamic system, every variable has the potential to affect other qualities. This is why I feel developing some understanding of the holistic system of oboe, oboist, oboe is important. Hopefully, my view of this system will begin to emerge in my writing. I am not a writer by trade, so explaining these concepts may take some time to unfold.
The oboe reed is dependent on the oboist, therefore the oboist makes or chooses reeds to suit their needs and desires. We can look at oboe reeds away from the oboist to better understand what variables affect the intonation of the reed itself. I see there being two main categories that most affect the intonation of an oboe reed. They are; Internal dimensions of the reed, Thickness of the cane, and external dimensions of the oboe reed.
The internal dimension of the reed can be thought of as the space between the two blades of oboe cane. The smaller this space is, the higher the pitch of the reed will be, assuming all other variables remain the same. The larger the internal space the lower the pitch of the reed. Here are the variables I see as most affecting the internal dimensions of the oboe reed. Imagine we are making reeds on the same staples with the same piece of cane, and all variables stay the same aside from that being discussed.
External dimensions of the oboe reed affecting intonation
The external dimension of the oboe reed can be thought of as the thickness of the cane at different points. Imagine no other variable is being affected. The usual rule is that any time cane is scraped off the reed the pitch will drop slightly. This is not always the case, but it is a good general rule until you become very familiar with the workings of the oboe reed. When thinking about the variables below think that you have a finished oboe reed and you adjust the given variable listed and nothing else.
I feel it is important to remember that oboe reed making includes a lot of variables, so it is best not to assign too many value judgments on these variables. The key to making good oboe reeds is finding the balance between the variables that works for you as an oboist. You may make oboe reeds with very long tips, and a very thick hearts to compensated for the pitch drop from the long tip. There is nothing wrong with that, just as there is nothing wrong with making oboe reeds with very short tips and a thicker heart. What is important is to ask;
A wide reed may be shorter than a reed made with a more narrow piece of cane to compensate for the pitch. One is not better or worse, the reeds simply have a different point of balance in terms of structure related to intonation. My point is to say that oboe reeds must be made to work first, with the preference of the oboist in mind.
To say all oboe reeds must have very thick hearts, rails and spine may work for one system of playing but not another. A specific gouge and shape may work well with a reed that has these qualities, but others may be overly tight and stuffy. depending on all the other factors at work. Oboe reed making is not done in a vacuum, so there is often a need to compensate one variable with another. Finding the balance between all variables is the goal as I see it, not making oboe reeds exactly like someone else, unless those reeds work well for you. Even then the reed making process is going to be slightly different due to knife technique. That is also assuming all variables can be controlled for between oboist, instrument, tools and material and philosophy. I digress …
Assessing oboe reed intonation.
I make oboe reeds initially by the crow. I find it gives me a good idea of how the reed will play, and then I can adjust the reed by feel as I play it. Some oboists do not assess the crow while making reeds, and that is fine too. I build my reeds to crow a “C” natural. Getting to that point can be confusing and challenging in itself, I know, but it will provide rewards when learned. I can evaluate my reeds slightly more objectively by getting the reed to crow a certain way. The “C” tells me about the oboe reed intonation away from embouchure’s manipulation.
The information provided within the crow does not mean anything away from the oboist and style which they make their oboe reeds. The oboe reed crow tells me a lot about how the reed will play before I ever put it into an oboe, but that is because I am accustomed to what information is in the crow, and know what it means to me, related to my embouchure and air. I will break down the oboe reed crow related to “The Big three” at a later date.
I feel building a conceptual framework is very important, so students are not “scraping in the dark” if you like. I feel there are already a lot of great resources out there about how to scrape oboe reeds and not many which provide a conceptual way to approach oboe reed making. I also hope to provide information relevant to not just the “Aaron Lakota” style of oboe reed making but concepts that hold true no matter the style of reed making you practice.
How to test oboe reed intonation.
I will be sure to write in depth about the oboe reed crow in the future, for now, I will supply a way to assess oboe reed intonation for any oboist, no matter what school of playing you belong to, or style of oboe reed you use or make. What we are trying to do is establish a standard of where the reed will play with your usual air and embouchure.
Always assess the oboe reeds you make by this standard or some other objective standard. Reeds do tend to become sharper as they break in, so you may like to break the reed in slowly and adjust it as you break it in. Be sure that all reeds you consider “finished” play in tune for your specific set-up. A reed that is nearly complete but plays slightly flat will likely play in tune when it is broken in. This is because the internal dimension decreases as the reed closes. My oboe reeds tend to close as they are played, which raises the pitch.

As we become more proficient oboe reed makers we gain a more in-depth understanding of how “the Big Three” qualities balance for our specific needs as oboists. Making sure the oboe reed intonation is correct for you without too much resistance very important. A reed that plays in tune with the correct amount of resistance will allow the performer comfortably make music and not create too much tension in the body.
Sometimes a good ear can be detrimental to an oboe reed maker in beginning stages because the oboist will often compensate for pitch problems in the reed with their air or embouchure. A small amount of compensation is natural and a benefit in playing the oboe however I think we want to make our reeds play in tune for our specific embouchure, air, and instrument without the need for too much change in control. I encourage oboe reed making students set their air and embouchure then adjust the reed to that. Do not try to control the oboe reed any more than you usually would, let the reed work for you. Perhaps this is personal taste up to be debated.
I have a lot of personal experience making oboe reeds that were flat and needed to be manipulated by embouchure and air to play in tune. I would blow very hard into the reed and bite it up to pitch. The overblowing would create a lot of tension within my body. I was never aware that oboe playing could be easier, with less tension in my body. To be honest I was not really even aware of the tension for a long time.
Tension and support should not be confused, support is a conscious act, a slight flexing of the core area of the body to bring the air pressure in the lungs to the correct level. Tension can be unconscious and is the flexing of other parts of the body that are not needed for oboe playing. It is trying to raise the pressure in the body in other areas apart from the diaphragm area. The shoulders, throat, and back are main areas for me personally. Meditation or Alexander technique, which I consider a form of mindfulness meditation, can help oboists to become more in tune with their bodies and minds. More in tune with the points of tension in the body. The only way to release this tension is to find what is causing it and then eliminate changing something. That may be learning to use the air differently, or changing the reed. A mindfulness practice can help relieve tension, also there are other benefits that I talk about in Meditation for oboists.
Playing on sharper reeds than I am accustomed can feel very uncomfortable for me. I feel a reed needs to take a certain amount of air so too much back-pressure does not form in my body. Like flat reeds, reeds that play too sharp for a specific oboist will create two problems I can think of now. I have less experience with sharp reeds than flat, so please feel free to leave insights in the comments.
Once again, a flat or sharp reed to you may be an in-tune reed to someone else, that comes down to a lot of variables. The solution is to learn to assess your oboe reeds based on what you need personally. Learning to make and adjust oboe reeds is something that will benefit any oboist no matter the level. You may also find an oboe reed maker that makes reeds that work well for you. They may be very close to what you need and a simple internal or external adjustment will make them better for you.

We have different bodies, different instruments, and different concepts in terms of beauty of tone. Just like oboe playing, oboe reed intonation is not one size fits all.
I encourage you to find your own voice on the instrument. Create that sound with as much ease as possible. Finding the balance between intonation, response, and resistance in oboe reed making and adjusting will allow you much more freedom in artistry. ]]>I have played around with the Legere oboe reed I purchased a couple of weeks ago. I have also heard from some colleagues around the world about their experiences with the synthetic oboe reeds. Please see my post “Legere oboe reed review” if you are new to the topic, or how I initially evaluated the reed. Many European oboists are really liking the Legere oboe reeds, and I have heard a couple professional American oboists playing them with success.
While the Legere oboe reed is very different than what I would normally choose to play I feel it does have a lot of good qualities. I was pretty happy with the tone quality of the reed, though it was more of an “open” European sound than what I tend to shoot for in my own tone. That is not a criticism so much as a difference in taste. I happen to love the sound of many European oboists, I simply have a different tonal concept of what I sound like on the oboe.
I did find it slightly too resistant for my air and embouchure initially and thought the response left something to be desired. The pitch was also flatter than what I like. I once again see these qualities as a matter of taste in some ways, so I am not condemning the reed so much as sharing a personal perspective.
My curiosity once again got the best of me and I decided to go about hacking away at the reed to see if I could make it a little more to my liking. I purchased the Legere oboe reed due to my curiosity, and I did not anticipate ever loving the reed as it was out of the box. I figured it would be better to know if I could make it into a long scrap reed and destroy it, than have a $150 oboe reed I would never touch again.
The natural solution was to go about adjusting it as I would any other reed. I pulled out my micrometers and measured the internal dimensions of the reed. The center of the heart was a bit thinner than where my own reeds tend to end, so this gave me enough intuition that the resistance I was feeling in the oboe reed was from the tip and back and not the heart. I did not scrape anything from the heart for the whole process. The reed was also a bit flatter than what I like with my embouchure, so again this told me that I should stay away from the heart.
I found the way I usually sharpen my knife did not work so well on the synthetic material. It got “caught” in the material and would not remove cane but just stop. I found that by using a slightly more surgical edge with the burr straight up and down, as if for slicing, it worked better than the pushing burr we oboe reed makers tend to use. I found a heavier beveled knife worked well for the back of the reed, and a sharper double hollow ground knife worked well for the very tip and sides of the tip.
I began by making some windows in the back. Next time I would not go here right away because I really work the tip before moving back. I usually scrape the backs fairly early in my own reed making process and define them later. Perhaps on this style of reed, with the already thin heart, the back may help to keep the pitch up, though the pitch was not right for me from the start. I don’t regret scraping the windows, but I would like to know where the reed would sit in terms of intonation without scraping this area and only adjusting the tip. I know myself and would have dug the windows out even if the reed was “perfect”. The reed was destined to be a long scrape reed, I would have kept wondering “what if”, if I left it alone.
Scraping the windows did loosen the reed’s vibrations in the lower overtones. It dropped the pitch slightly which made me somewhat wary that I may end up with a “flarpy” ( my own word, meaning flat and dull) oboe reed.
After scraping what I assumed were windows (it is very difficult to see what you are doing on a clear reed), I moved to the very tip of the reed to help with the oboe reed response and oboe reed resistance. The links are to articles I have written on the topics.
I focussed my attention on the very tip and sides of the tip. I took a lot of cane from the tip and progressively worked my way back slightly never moving into the heart. The oboe reed really loosened up and the resistance decreased by focusing on the tip and sides of the tip.
The tip was pretty thick when I first put the plaque into the Legere oboe reed. I like to finish my own reeds without too much of a “click” from moving off the tip of the oboe reed to the plaque, so I knew I would be working a lot in this area.
The reed didn’t drop too much in pitch from working on the tip, which was a comforting sign. I clipped the reed to a “C”. The response was still not so great so I continued to thin the very tip and sides of the tip. Clipping and thinning over and over.
Eventually, the reed got to a pretty nice feeling place for me. The only downside was the pitch really did not want to “sit up” and required some embouchure manipulation to play in tune, even while crowing a “C”. Some people like this quality, I am lazy (I like to think I am efficient) and prefer an oboe reed that works for me and does not need too much help in terms of embouchure manipulation.
I concluded that I was not going to get the reed to play exactly as I like due to the intonation, but it was close. The solution would have been pretty simple on a cane reed, simply squeeze the back directly above the thread slightly. This would have raised the settled pitch of the reed. my finished Legere oboe reed with adjustments is 68.5mm. I know from my experience that if I attempt to get the pitch right it is going to be a never ending spiral of clipping and thinning. A smaller opening of the staple area could easily compensate for this deficiency if Legere goes ahead with the American style oboe reeds.
I am tempted to take a lighter to that part of the reed in trying to manipulate it slightly, but I have someone interested in buying my adjusted Legere oboe reed, so it may wait until I buy a new one…. or loose interest.
I love that the reed does not need any preparation to play. Sometimes I find myself just wanting to pick up my oboe and play something without soaking a few reeds, waiting to see how they will act today and choosing one. The synthetic reed basically plays the same way every time I pick it up. As other musicians have said about Legere reeds, “They are not the best reeds in the case but they work”. I find myself playing scales on it in between other daily responsibilities. Improvisation on the oboe has interested me for the past couple years and find myself jamming along with music I hear on the stereo. I can pick the oboe up and play for five minutes and not feel I need to be committed due to the soaking ritual involved.
Synthetic reeds are not likely to replace traditional handmade oboe reeds in the near future, so I am not worried they will put me out of business as a professional oboe reed maker. I welcome high-quality synthetic oboe reeds into the market and look forward to seeing where they go.
Ultimately I feel Legere is not too far off from making an American style synthetic oboe reed in concept. I am sure the micro details are somewhat difficult with CNC machines. Their reed making process involves engineering and computers, I used knives and cutting blocks, we are in completely different industries. I think they will need to compensate pitch somewhere, my suggestion would be in the staple opening. The tip needs to be a bit thinner, the heart every so slightly thicker to compensate for the cane being taken from the back.

]]>Have you ever had one of those days where your tongue is pecking away at the oboe reed, working as hard as it can, and your articulations still sound slow or sloppy? Well, your reed may have response issues. Don’t worry, by recognizing the oboe reed response issues you are already on your way to happier reeds. Wow… that sounds like the start of some new prescription drug commercial.
Response, resistance, and intonation are “The Big Three” qualities that sit at the top of a conceptual hierarchy of oboe reed making for me. I feel these three qualities are the most important qualities to assess and understand in oboe reeds. I feel that by understanding response, resistance, and intonation within oboe reeds, we build an understanding of the function of oboe reeds. I think that once the concepts are understood oboe reeds may be made and adjusted to suit the oboists needs with more control.
Understanding what this word “response” or “responding” or any other variation of the word is referring to is the first step in knowing how to improve it. We must recognize that we want to change something before it will every happen. I hope to provide readers with some insights into my own understanding of the word response and what it refers to in oboe reed making. I cannot give you any experience, but I can share the knowledge I have obtained through my experience. This information is in no way a substitute for “hands on” oboe reed making, but it may help provide inspiration for the oboist looking to further develop their own conceptual understanding of oboe reed function.

I subscribe to the belief that the primary function of the oboe reed is to vibrate. That’s right, they are not here to make us frustrated. The vibrations from the reed are amplified by the instrument’s body and create vibrations in the air. The vibrations in the air are interpreted by our ears as sound.
The measurement of Response in an oboe reeds is; how quickly the oboe reed reacts to the air within the system of the reed, oboe, and oboist. Or; How quickly the energy is transferred from the air to the reed.
There is often confusion between oboe reed response and oboe reed resistance. I have written a little bit about how “the big three” can affect other qualities either due to player preference, unrecognized habits, or limited reed making skills. Resistance and response are related within the dynamic system at work within the oboe reed and oboist’s body, but they are qualities that can be clearly delineated as well.
I like to think of the resistance of oboe reeds as the amount of air pressure that is needed for the reed to vibrate optimally. I think of the resistance as a constant average of how much pressure needs to be created within the body system to make the reed work. Essentially it is a transfer of energy from our body to the air, to the reed, therefore resistance is the measurement of how much energy is needed to make the reed vibrate.
The Response of the oboe reed is not a measurement of how much energy is needed, but how quickly the reed reacts to the energy that is present within the system. Resistance is related to the amount of energy needed to make oboe reeds vibrate, the response is related to ease of transference of energy through the reed.
I make oboe reeds primarily by the crow of the oboe reed. The crow allows me to build the function into the reed away from the control of the embouchure. There are many different ideas out there as far as how an oboist should make reeds. I am certainly not making the case that all oboist should make reeds by the crow, but it is my method and therefore everything I present on this blog will in some way biased. I assess the response by how softly the initial first octave “C natural” comes into the crow of the reed. I talk briefly about crowing the reed in the article “oboe reeds for beginners“. There are a few sound clips of me crowing a reed in that article and I breifly describe the crow. I will write more on this topic at a later time and also how I asses “the big three” with the crow and adjust the reed according to that.
I will present a method to evaluate the response of a reed without using the crow for those oboists that would prefer to use a different method. Here is what I do while I am evaluating a reed while playing it.
A reed can be very resistant and still be very responsive. A reed may require a lot of air pressure and air volume to speak, but it may still speak very softly without any change in embouchure. A reed can also be very easy to play but not respond at a soft dynamic level. I find a lot of mass produced student reeds fit into this category.
the Response is not only an evaluation of the initial attack dynamic but in my experience, this test will tell you how the reed will function beyond the dynamics.
I usually feel that the major playing qualities that response can affect are; articulation, dynamic contrast, and connection of notes. At a deeper level than just these three qualities, I would make the case that oboe reed response has the potential to affect anything that has to do with “change” in the system. A change in articulation, a change in dynamics, a change in pitch, a change in register, a change in intensity et cetera. Here is my practical list of what oboe reed response affects
Anytime the vibrations within the reed need to change for any reason the response of the reed determines the ease at which the reed will carry out that action.

I always like to think of oboe reeds and reed making as a sort of engineering exercise. I am not an engineer in any traditional sense, but I like to hypothesize about why reeds work the way they do. I feel trying to predict how something I do will change the function it builds a stronger conceptual framework. I still feel like I do not have a complete idea what I am doing, I am just a mad scientist hacking away at reeds laughing maniacally while I do it…
The place where all vibrations start within an oboe reed, or any other reed, is the tip. The tip of the reed is, or should be, the thinnest part. The vibrations start there and are transferred into the heart and the rest of the reed. I encourage students to think about the role of the tip of the oboe reed. The vibrations start there, therefore if the tip is not functioning properly, the rest of the reed has not hope to work well.
We can take a step back to our engineering of oboe reed, think about how vibrations can move from something that is very thin, to something that is a bit thicker (the heart of an oboe reed). what could hold those vibrations back? what could help them to be transferred ? I feel that thinking in terms of questions is always a helpful tool in evaluating and making oboe reeds.
The answer might not be known at the moment by the student, but by stepping back and not getting overly frustrated the oboist will have a better chance of objectively assessing the function to find a solution. Eventually, the answers to the questions asked will become apparent. I feel that by developing a conceptual understanding we oboists and oboe reed makers will have more control over the problems presented to us in oboe reeds.
