In this episode, Marc and Andrew celebrate the release of their brand new CD "Another Faire to Remember" and reveal why streaming just doesn't cut it for supporting your favorite artists. They dive deep into Brobdingnagian Bards history, share stories from FAWM (February Album Writing Month), and discuss the songs that truly connect with their fans on stage versus on recordings.
Plus, Andrew shares a bold political prediction, Marc announces his upcoming Irish & Celtic Music PodFest featuring The Muckers, Kinnfolk, and May Will Bloom, and they explore the fascinating history behind the classic sea shanty "Haul Away Joe" - a Renaissance festival favorite they've recorded but rarely perform live.
From basement pub concerts to Bandcamp streams, from Sherwood Forest Faire to JordanCon, it's all in this episode!
⚓ Listen now and then grab your copy of "Another Faire to Remember" to support independent Celtic music!

Another Faire to Remember is officially done. The music is off to the printers. Today, we start talking about the first five songs on the new album. Why are they there? What's the inspiration for them? What cool things happened in the recording process.
This album is far more personal than we realized. So we're excited to talk about it and even share a song.
Brobdingnagian Bards will be at Sherwood Forest Faire on the weekends of April 12-13 and 19-20. We might have smaller stage. But the show will be better than ever!

]]>In 2001, we released our fourth album. A Faire to Remember was a tribute to our love of Renaissance festivals. It featured our pick of the Top 10 most-popular Renaissance festivals that we had seen in the two years since we started playing music. Then it had some other found favorites like "Do Virgins Taste Better Medley", "Irish Ballad", "A Fairy Story", Monty Python's "Always Looking on the Bright Side of Life", plus our hit song, "If I Had a Million Ducats.".
The album was a smashing success. A years after it's release, my step-mom was at a party talking with someone. She mentioned me and said I played with the Brobdingnagian Bards. They person responded, "Brobdingnagian Bards?! They're legendary!"
I don't know about that. But the album was a big part of our success. It includes a bunch of our early-on, most-popular songs.
Another Faire to Remember is a continuation of that triumphant album. We're recording it 23 years after that hit album. But we're not just making a B-side. Instead, we're showing our growth as musicians and as songwriters.
You will hear several traditional songs on the album, but you'll also hear our songwriting. We are actively making new music for the Renaissance festival community.
That's what this Another Faire to Remember is ultimately about. It's about sharing new songs that are inspired by our love Ren Faires. This album is for Rennies.
You will love the music. But it's not just about loving the music. It's about learning the songs and singing along. That's why many supporters of the Kickstarter will get a songbook to go with the album featuring lyrics and chords for all of the songs played on the CD.
Speaking of CDs...
[You have Cdeeeees]
The goal of our Kickstarter is to raise funds to print physical copies of CDs and our Album Pins.
Will you help in that endeavor?
Thank you for all your support!

Another Faire to Remember shares a few new Ren Faire favorite songs. We also share more original songs. There are drinking songs, and anti-drinking songs. There are sing and shout alongs. There's a song inspired by Dungeons & Dragons. There's one inspired by Standing Stones at Sherwood Forest Faire. The album is packed with 15 tracks of fun Brobdingnagian Bards music.

WHAT'S NEW

TODAY'S SONG STORY: SATISFIED
Recorded for Songs of Marked By Great Size and Songs of Ireland, and on Andrew's CD, The Irish Bard
words and music Andrew McKee
It was twelve days ago in a pub. Night was near.
I was on me fourth pint of their best Irish beer
When a thought quickly struck me of all I hold dear.
So I went on outside to the hill with my beer.
Well, I smelled all the flowers all the flowers.
I've left none to behind.
I've told more the truth than I've told fib or lie
And I hope when you find me in the hills where I'll lie
That it'll always be said that I died satisfied.
Well, I took both the good and the bad in me life.
And I made the most of it in a home with me wife.
And I raised me two kids both a girl and a boy.
And they made all me life, oh, a gift to enjoy.
As for friends I've had many I ne're walked alone,
And a few were like family just as much as me own
They helped in times troubled and made happiness known.
And they gave me a young heart I've never outgrown,
Well, the evening was leaving and the sun said goodbye.
I thought of me past and I smiled with a sigh.
Oh, I had no regrets nay a reason to cry.
So I drank me beer down 'till the glass all was dry.

34:01 - TODAY'S SONG STORY: FROG KISSIN'
Frog Kissin' Lyrics
words and music by Buddy Kalb, arrangement Marc Gunn
Do you remember in the fairy tale, how the wicked witches spell
Turned the handsome prince to a toad?
By the power of a potion, she handed him the notion
He was lower than the dirt in the road.
And though she left him green and warted, her evil plans were thwarted
Their chanced to happen by a young miss
Who in spite of his complexion, offered him affection
And broke the wicked curse with her kiss
So if you've never been frog kissing
Then you don't know what you've been missin',
There's a wealth of opportunity under each and every log.
And if you've never been charm-breakin',
Then you've never been handsome prince makin'.
You've got to slow down, turn around, bend down,
Kiss you a frog!
Once upon a time ago, I was down and feelin' low
Like a lonely frog in a pond
My life was just a joke, and I was just about to croak
Cuz I'd be zapped by life's wicked wand.
But in the depths of my depression, there came a true expression
Of love from a person so sweet.
She gave me warm fuzzy feelings, feelings that were healin'
And she knocked me off my little webbed feet.
There's a happy-ever-after-land, deep in the heart of man
Where a prince and princess abides.
But all we get are glimpses, of the happy prince or princess
'Cauce they're covered with a green warty hide.
Though they're full of life's potential, they're lacking one essential
To enable them to shine like a star.
That's a handsome guy or missus, to smother them with kisses
And love them just the way that they are.
That's the secret of frog kissing
You can do it too if you'll just listen
There's a wealth of opportunity under each and every log.
That's the secret of charm-breakin',
That's the secret of handsome prince makin'.
You've got to slow down, turn around, bend down,
Kiss you a…
You've got to slow down, turn around, bend down,
Kiss you a…
You've got to slow down, turn around, bend down,
Kiss you a frog!

SONG LYRICS
by Marc Gunn and Andrew McKee
A long time ago, a tugboat faraway.
Mickey whistled out a tune while bouncing away
He turned color after one too many drinks
Then called up Lucas saying, "Haha! Dude... your writing stinks!"
When Mickey sobered up, he called the board to plan,
"I've had a vision, a lightsaber in my hand
We'll make Star Wars as we wish upon a star
And will do it far better with a story by Pixar. Haha!"
[to the tune When you Wish upon a Star]
When the mouse wants your franchise
He'll start off licensing for rides.
If you're tired and you need some cash
He'll buy from you......
One part mouse and one part duck
One part Jedi and formulaic luck
A Wookie on my right and a Goofy one on my left
Merging these two companies... is the big test
There's a star destroyer shaped like a mushroom house
The Beagle boys stand before a Sith Lord mouse
While far away a Jedi Mouse stares into space
The three moons of Tatooine replaced... by Mickey's face
Mickey meets Minnie. The force is strong with her.
He lays a kiss on her, and the fans all hurl
Minnie is his sister and that folks is a shame
Our love for those mice will never... be the same
Mickey stabs the Sith. The dark mouse disappears
Wherever there's one Sith Lord, another will appear
A duck steps forward with a cloak as black as ink
With Jedi mice and ducks, I'll need... a stronger drink.

39:48 - TODAY'S STORY:
58:03 - SONG: "Do Virgins Taste Better Medley" from A Faire to Remember
words by Randy Farran, music Traditional
A dragon has come to our village today.
We've asked him to leave, but he won't go away.
Now he's talked to our king and they worked out a deal.
No homes will he burn and no crops will he steal.
Now there is but one catch, we dislike it a bunch.
Twice a year he invites him a virgin to lunch.
Well, we've no other choice, so the deal we'll respect.
But we can't help but wonder and pause to reflect.
* Do virgins taste better than those who are not?
Are they salty, or sweeter, more juicy or what?
Do you savor them slowly? Gulp them down on the spot?
Do virgins taste better than those who are not?
Now we'd like to be shed you, and many have tried.
But no one can get through your thick scaly hide.
We hope that some day, some brave knight will come by.
'Cause we can't wait around 'til you're too fat to fly.
Now you have such good taste in your women for sure,
They always are pretty, they always are pure.
But your notion of dining, it makes us all flinch,
For your favorite entree is barbecued wench.
Now we've found a solution, it works out so neat,
If you insist on nothing but virgins to eat.
No more will our number ever grow small,
We'll simply make sure there's no virgins at all!
words by Claire Stephens, music traditional
Now, I am a dragon. Please listen to me.
For I'm misunderstood to a dreadful degree.
This ecology needs my and I know my place.
But I'm fighting extinction with all of my race.
Well, I came to this village to better my health
Which is ever so poor, despite all my wealth.
But I get no assistance and no sympathy,
Just impertinent questioning shouted at me.
* Yes, virgins taste better than those who are not.
But my favorite snack mixed with peril is fraught.
For my teeth will decay and my trim go to pot.
Yes, virgins taste better than those who are not.
Well, I'm really quite kind almost all through the year.
Vegetarian ways are now mine out of fear.
But a birthday needs sweets as I'm sure you'll agree.
And barbecued wench tastes like candy to me
As it happens our interests are almost the same.
You see I'm really quite skillful at managing game.
If I ate just your men, would your excess decline?
Of course not, the rest would just make better time.
Now, the number of babies a woman can bare
Has limits. That's why my prunings done there.
And an orphan's a sad sight and so when I much.
I'm careful to eat only virgins for lunch

58:03 - SONG: "Do Virgins Taste Better Medley" from A Faire to Remember
SONG LYRICS Do Virgins Taste Betterwords by Randy Farran, music Traditional
Now you have such good taste in your women for sure, They always are pretty, they always are pure. But your notion of dining, it makes us all flinch, For your favorite entree is barbecued wench.
Now we've found a solution, it works out so neat, If you insist on nothing but virgins to eat. No more will our number ever grow small, We'll simply make sure there's no virgins at all!
The Dragon's Retortwords by Claire Stephens, music traditional
Now, I am a dragon. Please listen to me. For I'm misunderstood to a dreadful degree. This ecology needs my and I know my place. But I'm fighting extinction with all of my race.
Well, I came to this village to better my health Which is ever so poor, despite all my wealth. But I get no assistance and no sympathy, Just impertinent questioning shouted at me.
Now, the number of babies a woman can bare Has limits. That's why my prunings done there. And an orphan's a sad sight and so when I much. I'm careful to eat only virgins for lunch

SONG LYRICS
Christmas Time in Texas
by Marc Gunn & Andrew McKee
There's no white Christmas day
less you drive a white Chevrolet
You won't hear sleigh bells ringing
less the Salvation Army is Santa-ing
In your...Christmas time in Texas.
And if you feel the holiday blues,
Go outside with no shoes
And when Santa Claus arrives,
He'll be wearing SPF 45
In your...Christmas time in Texas.
O The sun is shining bright.
Don't expect snowflakes tonight.
And if you hear Kris Kringle outside
His sleigh won't get stuck,
He's flying in style In his monster truck
During Christmas time in Texas.
So don't bother with Christmas lights.
Buy your cold winter clothing half-price.
Then the presents beneath your tree,
Will all smell just like mesquite.
In your... Christmas time in Texas.
O The sun is shining bright.
Don't expect snowflakes tonight.
Santa, won't come down your chimney
That's not what their for,
In Texas we're friendly. He'll use the front door.
During Christmas time in Texas.
Christmas morning, you will hope
In your stocking, there's a new rope
Forget eggnog. Drink lite beer
As you wrastle your new steer
In your...Christmas time in Texas.
O The sun is shining bright.
Don't expect snowflakes tonight.
And if you hear in your chimney,
A man that is stuck.
Load up your shotgun. This stranger is Fu… in trouble.
During Christmas time in Texas.

SONG LYRICS: A FAIRY STORY
words and music by Shay Healy, Oisin Music Ltd, Ireland
In days of old in a kingdom bold, there lived a fearsome dragon. And the King he was in great distress and the countries spirits flagoned. Until one day there came a knight, he was handsome, bold, and charming. And he slew the dragon with his sword with a smile that was so disarming. With a hey and a ho and a hey nany no, a smile that was so disarming.
Said the King I wish to know your name, but the knight said do not bother. For the name of a knight of the realm says he, is the same as any other. Said the King tonight in my daughter's bed you shall take your leisure. And she'll reward you for your deed, with a night of exhausting pleasure. With a hey and a ho and a hey nany no, anight of exhausting pleasure.
One daughter she had raven hair, a maiden young and chaste. And she slept all night in the pale moonlight, naked to the waist. The other daughter she was fair, the fairest in the town. And she slept all night in the pale moonlight naked from her small waist down. With a hey and a ho and a hey nany no, naked from her small waist down.
Well the knight he spends many hour behind the castle wall. But the ending to my story dear, isn't what it seems at all. For in neither bed of neither maid was he repaid for his glory. But he slept all night with the King instead for this is a fairy story. With a hey and a ho and a hey nany no, for this is a Fairy story.

STORY BEHIND "SEVEN SISTERS"
There were seven sisters. They were kind and good
The oldest sister went into the woods
She met and fell in love with a gentleman
He was the only son of the laird of the land
Singing hi da diddle diddle die dal day
Hi da diddle diddle die dal day
Every day just as the sunset fell,
The gentleman and maiden met beside a well
Their love was true. Their love was strong
The swore to tell their parents that they belong
The oldest sister told her six siblings
She met a man to love for eternity
They giggled and laughed with pride and joy
They would see her wed, the sisters swore.
The gentleman shared the love he found
But the Laird reminded him he was duty bound
He was betrothed to a fair lady
To extend his father's land along the sea
There in the meadow, the gentleman professed
To marry the maiden in a pretty white dress
She and her sisters, they promised
They would wait for him til their Marriage kiss
The Laird he learned of the marriage plan
He swore his son would become a man
He chained his son on the bailey ground
the gentleman said he was already bound
As the sun set, the laird laughed cruelly
You'll stay there till you listen to me
The Gentleman called out to the night
I will be faithful to my love so bright
There was a bright light. The ground it shook.
The water went dry Down by the brook.
The sisters heard the gentlemen's cry.
They turn to stane so they'd never die
The Lord went down to the Bailey ground
To see if his son had come around
There where his son had been chained alane
All that stood was a standings stane
Deep in the wood by a dried up brook
Stand Seven tall stones that continue to look
The seven sisters await the swain
Who stands in the courtyard all alane

TODAY IN BROBDINGNAG0:35 - "Old Dun Cow" from Brobdingnagian Fairy Tales
4:30 - "Do Virgins Taste Better Medley" from A Faire to Remember
9:15 - "Lily the Pink" from Brobdingnagian Fairy Tales
Alright, before we get back to the music. Andrew will teach you how to say our band name.
"How to Say Brobdingnagian" from our website
Next up is our parody of the Barenaked Ladies song, "If I Had $1000000".
13:44 - "If I Had A Million Ducats" from A Faire to Remember
17:01 - "The Ring of Hope" from Memories of Middle Earth
21:18 - "Jedi Drinking Song" from Brobdingnagian Fairy Tales
If you enjoy any of our music, then we have CDs. Now the correct response, when we say, "we have CDs" is to say, "you have CDs." The inflection at the end really makes it.
But yes, we do have CDs.
Notice how I wait for you to say it. If you go to our website at thebards.net, you will find a link to "Buy Music". That'll take you to our store on Bandcamp. There, you will find the last remaining CDs... of the Brobdingnagian Bards catalog. (Great job!)

]]>Last year, we restarted the band through Patreon. We are creating all new music together. That hasn't been done since 2007. We wanted to give our kind members of the Nagians Only Club on Patreon, a special treat.
However, we realized that this podcast is a great tool for bringing new Brobdingnagian Bards fans back into the fold. We asked our Nagians if we could make it public again. They overwhelmingly agreed.
And so... it's back!
In this episode, we take one of the most in depth examination of how we got started. We share some fun anecdotes and stories from our time together early on.
Yes. We've done some of this before. But this is a 20 year retrospective. So it's all new to us.
We hope you will join us in our crusade to have fun sing Celtic songs and being Renaissance festival geeks.
Maybe you'll even join us at Sherwood Forest Faire at the end of March. Two weekends!
You can find details on our website, where you can also buy music, merch and join the Nagians Only Club for just $5 per month.
This supports us as musicians. It encourages to continue creating new music for you.

]]>You see, January marked the 20th anniversary of the Brobdingnagian Bards. It seemed a shame to hide all of this great content from Nagians around the world. So we asked them if we could make this podcast public once again. They resoundingly said, "YES!"
We are very pleased to share this show with you. Once a month, you will hear us chat about what's new, funny things that happened or are happening, behind-the-scenes look at new songs, chat about geek culture, and all of the silly antics that make up a Brobdingnagian Bards show.
Yes, it's a lot like listening to a Brobdingnagian Bards with all of the craziness that ensues.
Of course, this podcast would not be back without the generosity of members of the Nagians Only Club. You can support our mission to make Celtic music fun when you join us there on Patreon for as little as $5 per month. Plus, you'll get episodes before regular listeners.
The Nagians Only Club on Patreon is part of the modern record label. We are creating new music and sharing our fun sense of humor with you because of your generosity. So please sign up today.
Oh! And stay tuned. There's a new episode coming out soon!,

As we prepare for our reunion show at Sherwood Forest Faire, wandering through the grounds, we record a podcast for the world to hear!
And our theme is: What you can do with worn out Bards CDs? When they've been listened to far too often, rendering them useless for further musical perusal? Here are our suggestions…
10. Coaster! 9. Oriental Star – be a CD ninja! 8. Frisbee 7. Mirror 6. Christmas Ornaments 5. Reflect on the Virgin Song (?) 4. Confounding Jugglers at Ren Faires 3. Sundial (using a recorder!) 2. "Fun" things to do in your microwave (Disclaimer: Don't try this at home. DANGER.) 1. Wall Art!
What would YOU do with your worn out Bards CD?
Yesterday's show was great! The show went well, the crowd was fun, and we were good – we didn't go over time! We went through a bunch of old favorites, and some others that we rarely play for some of our die hard fans.
Most importantly, as we log off, in order to replace your beloved CDs, go to thebards.net to replenish and restock your shelves!
And don't forget to subscribe to Brobdingnagian Bards mailing list for the latest news!

The first question that raises it's head is "What is the purpose of a podcast?"
In the past, we've done brainstorming, as well as just chatting about what's going on with our lives. A behind-the-scenes tour, if you will – or a self-covering band!
So how do you create a podcast for a band that only meets once or twice a year? Do we just go for the general chatting about life and work, or do we go for something completely off-the-wall? We don't have much time together, so outrageous skits and dashing fight scenes aren't really options…
But these options of chatting about TV and our lives are all boring… a good setup is usually starting off with news, followed by an intro, and then the meat of the podcast. Informing, entertaining, evergreen. Crazy idea – we could do skits, but ask our audience to send in suggestions of what they'd like to see! Improv, parodies, rambling, actual dialogue, commentary – who knows!
Or we could just start classifying everything either Lilliputian or Brobdingnagian.
Basically, the moral of the story, this podcast is about us podcasting and the purpose of our podcasts.

This year, I was thinking about how the show should conclude. What can we do to create one giant crescendo of a song where everyone is singing along with us?
The song we decided on was "I See Fire", the song from the end of the second Hobbit movie. It's beautiful, dramatic and has a great sing-along at the end.
At ALEP last year (the hobbit gathering in Central Kentucky), an Elf Choir performed the song. It was amazing. Wouldn't it be awesome replicate that song at the end of the show?
I threw the idea out to Andrew and together we talk about the logistics needed to make it happen. What we are envisioning. You can even watch the performance that inspired this idea on YouTube. Then you just need to show up at DragonCon on Sunday evening to see if we can make it look as cool as we hope it will be.
